@@LeafGreen906 The only part that makes me feel that way is the Battle Resort. I'm on board for the changes implemented to ORAS- though the Latios thing is a problem. The single main problem for me was the lack of the Battle Frontier. I loved the rest of the redesigns. The DexNav is a fantastic addition for multiple reasons, Mega Evolution was fun while it lasted, the changes made to the story really made it more engaging- and I can't see how anyone could prefer the original story except with nostalgia goggles, and last but not least, Soaring as an alternative for flying was a great precursor to Ride Pokemon which freed your team of bad HM moves, or using up a slot for an HM slave. Of course, in this case it was just fly, but it did herald good things to come.

BDSP had so many opportunity to be the best remake, its in a fan favorite region, popular characters, and popular mons. Good analysis here. I would say I don’t agree with the “these games are for kids” argument though-don’t kids deserve good games too? And I always felt that Pokemon has a lot of adult fans for being a child-oriented series. I also really liked how you brought up the way remakes are caught between two visions or fires as you put it. Helps to visualize the two directions for sure.

Good video over all but I think the ending point of “these games aren’t made for us anymore” was a little weak and hypocritical. Seriously, with how much they constantly shove Charizard down our throats and almost all of their recent ads revolve around nostalgia for the old games, to Pokemon Home charging you for a tiny amount of storage space to keep your Pokemon around forever, it's just being willfully ignorant about them targeting adults.

I feel like Pokemon has managed to shoehorn it's way into this current situation because they're constantly trying to appeal to two different groups who have opposing "wants". Young players might want a bit of a challenge but it can't be too difficult/grindy or they would just get bored and put the game down, older players want the exact opposite. The issue arises in that catering to one group will turn the other one away, thus losing them money. And they seem determined to find the answer to this while also forcing both groups into the exact same difficulty setting (excluding self imposed rulesets) for whatever reason. Though they could honestly solve all of this if they just hired more people or actually let the people take their time perfecting the game by delaying it and adding different difficulty settings. Seriously you earn the most money out of any other franchise you can afford a year or two without a mainline release.

@@cookiemoon7441 They figure that experienced players can test their might in battle facilities and online. They use the campaign as a giant training ground with the hopes that players can find enjoyment of challenge in catching them before that point but obviously that doesn't seem to be the case for a lot of people for whatever reason. But also the battle frontier being removed is a giant let down. I still enjoyed battle tree though. There are some addicting features that make it better in some ways, however frontier just offers more good features.

To be honest, I think FRLG are the best way to experience Kanto. Praising HGSS for updating GSC but not FRLG is very nitpicking, as RGBY are a pain to go back once you enter the GBA era. Battles are much faster, visuals are amazing (for both overworld and battles), Gen 3 PC and Bag are a godsent, and they made it so you can follow tutorials or skip them by setting up the HELP option with LR buttons or having Teachy TV as an optional feature. That's not even counting Abilities, Natures, held Items, Double Battles, automatic PC storage, and Breeding. They also added the Fame Checker to have a better follow up to important characters, the VS Seeker, Elite 4 rematches, and a cool prequel for Johto events with the Sevii Islands quest. ORAS also gets a lot of hate for the lack of Battle Frontier and Exp. Share, but I honestly love how they added so many Mega Evolutions, all the XY mechanics (Aime, Super Training, PSS, Horde Battles, and all previous gens mechanics like infinite TMs or Triple Battles from BW), Soaring, updated areas (Scorching Slab, Mirage locations, New Mauville), improved Secret Bases, DexNav... and they also developed important characters much better with redesigns and better personalities and motivations. Even if I don't really love Zinnia or the multiverse in Pokemon, I have to admit the Deoxys event becoming part of the game was pretty damn cool and epic. It really feels they put a lot of passion that usually gets ignored for some features (which I do miss as well), and that's what pushed them back so much for later releases, just like how it happened back in Black/White.

The main reason I didn't enjoy FRLG was because it was the 4th time I went back to Kanto (I played Red, then Yellow, then Gold, then Leaf Green). Even though there are some differences, I was just so sick of Kanto at that point. But I do agree that FRLG were the best way to play that region

The reason people dont really talk about those "additions" is that they aren't unique to the remakes, only ported over from the other games from the gen. Its why following pokemon from HG/SS and the new megas exclusive to OR/AS are so praised. If you exclude the stuff already on gen 3 games, the only unique contribution FR/LG made to the originals were the sevii islands and the updated E4 teams. Thats not to say these games are bad though, i agree that they're by far the best gen 1 experience

I think ORAS is the last Pokémon game I’ve played until Arceus that I felt genuinely happy playing. I was having fun, enjoying using the team I had and seeing the sights and how they reconstructed the towns I had seen in Ruby when I was a kid into something familiar yet new and beautiful. Every game since then has just been boring and an absolute slog to play through. XY is a game I have a hard time going back to, so without ORAS, I’d have a negative opinion of Gen 6 as a whole. Remakes should build upon the main game and serve as a definitive entry in the series, not a lazy “faithful” cash grab. BDSP have ruined the word “faithful” for me.

@@luchotenks2310 bad level curve, a weak regional dex filled with a lot of weak pokemon, weak designs and an over reliance on Kanto pokemon. The region is also quite boring in the same way that Kanto is, due to the original being on the gameboy the regions were basically just Squares with roads intersecting it but without having the excuse of being the first game and while also being a remake that could've changed it, it's much more of an issue. The story is also probably the weakest in the entire series, don't get me wrong, every pokemon games story is pretty bad or non existant so it didn't really affect my enjoyment of Crystal all that much, but yet again something worth noting that wasn't altered in a remake that contributes it to not being "the pinnacle of remakes".

@@reio1951 I see, in hindsight I agree on most of those points specially the bad level curve. Still, for me at least, the HGSS remakes made up for all of those shortcomings with a handful of cool features like cross-generational compatibility via Pal Park (and without the 24 hour restriction of DPP), an amazing post-game in the form of battle frontier and the safari zone, shortcuts in the graphic interface and other quality of life improvements, the availability of move tutors and TMs, re-spawning roaming Pokemon, upgraded breeding mechanics, the Elite Four now having 6 Pokemon above level 60 as they always should have, and all the accumulated upgrades the main games of the franchise had seen so far like the physical/special split, abiiities with field effects, GTS, etc. Not to mention that walking Pokemon and the occasional photograph with your team did a lot to solidify the immersion and the bond between you and your Pokemon unlike any other main series game till that point.

The argument that "Pokemon for Kids" is SLOPPY and BAD, especially coming from a Nintendo channel. Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing, Smash Brothers, all these Nintendo titles have no problems being made for kids without alienating older audiences. I mean, all this comes ahead when you just LOOK at the promotional videos and ads for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, they EXPLICITLY say they are made to capitalize on the nostalgia of people that have played those games in the past! How are you going to jump from an argument of confused nostalgia and modernization and immediately argue after "Must be for new generations". The problem isn't that who the games are for or what decisions are being made to bring forwards into the franchise but that they aren't really given enough time to fully develop and test these ideas and truly build on the games in the past. Mario is getting marketed more than ever to a new generation of kids, through more toys, dolls, even lego kits, and movies, but what would be the biggest mistake for them ever would be to only make Mario 64-style or NSMB games every year with alternating years from that point on. The Developers need the space to let their ideas breed and grow, never mind that would shrink Mario's audience as there are games like Mario Kart, Paper Mario, and Mario Party (Mario Sports, etc) that can fill a mainline Mario spot, and sell the franchise without one of those games needing to be made. Meanwhile they stay timeless and actually can be re-released or remade, not made as disposable as something like a Later Megaman game where the audience for a Megaman 2 remake would be larger than the audience for Megaman 4 or 5. Pokemon needs SERIOUS investment in the games department. It is getting serious investment, but it is hard to see where it will go or if it will continue because not only does it need it's own Mario Kart, Mario Party, Paper Mario title that is big enough to carry the franchise, even if collectively that year, but they need co-current mainline titles like Pokemon Go and Unit to potentially carry the series forwards if fans do get mad at one or two of the other mainline content streams. The second that you've decided to no longer include every pokemon is the second you started to endanger your franchise, because in that way Pokemon isn't Mario, if Monte Mouse or Fly Guy never show up again in 20 years or so, it's not a problem, but if it is Pachirisu, or Zekrom, or Lucario, or more specifically a very popular Pokemon like Greninja, you are giving players reasons to not play upcoming games, to not invest themselves emotionally in coming aspects of the franchise. That is going to give diminishing effects, and you multiply that by hundreds of exclusions and you have problems. Personally, I think if Pokemon is to adapt, they might be better off becoming a live game, something like the Anime where the player is sent all over to have adventures, having nostalgic fun returning to old places with old pokemon, and new exciting fun seeing places they've never been, with regions operating like different countries with different rules and presentations, trickled out among a 4-5 year spread of time, maybe even extended further if it is successful. However, the base game needs to be meaty enough to not feel like an initial compromise to the gamer, with many things to do, and many things added for them to do to come, while also getting a battle system change that reflects this different form of gameplay. It needs that actual big upgrade from being thought of and developed as a portable game title, and truly upgraded into a console level game (I mean, this is Nintendo's fault, but that is part of the problem, games are still being developed like they are running on the 3DS, just as an HD version). it's not just more money invested that is going to do that, but developers are going to actually need more time too. That is why we should get something like a new Pokken in 2022, a new Mystery Dungeon, Legends Arceus and maybe other new ideas like that, (Pokemon Ranger was one, New Pokemon Snap was another, maybe there should and could be more), give the upcoming game extra time to get polish, but not only polish, but full features again, not just a disposable streamlined quick and dirty game like Sword and Shield, or even Let's Go to a degree, that is made to be replaced the next year like it is Assassin's Creed or Madden.

Even though they've improved some aspects of it in the sword and shield DLC and Legends... it's still a problem. in Arceus it's cool because a lot of the legendaries are limitied to post game and some of them even have fun things like only appearing in a thunderstorm and trying to fight you off if you get close. The main issue for me is you are normally given a marker and told to go to a location and bam there it is. The manaphy quest in arceus might be a little too far in the vague how was I supposed to figure this out direction. But I prefer it to being told to go to a cave and claim your prize.

Admittedly the free Lati in ORAS does remove the need for the Fly HM (Hoenn and Sinnoh being infamous for HMs required to navigate the overworld and caves) and makes flying more interesting than simply the fast travel mechanic it had previously been and would return to being. The entries following ORAS, both new games and remakes, would find ways to work around the traditional HM system through region specific mechanics such as BDSP using a Poketch app to summon Pokémon to perform the HM task.

I just wonder how the actual hell they're going to approach remakes of Gen 5. The biggest issue being that B2W2 weren't enhanced versions akin to Yellow, Emerald etc BUT were actually sequels, with different main characters, a different story that took place 3 years later and even new locations. Do they remake BW and leave out the expanded story involving Kyurem and the DNA Splicers/Neo Plasma? I just don't see how they're going to pull that one off without hurting the legacy of Unova, since B2W2 was such a fantastic follow up and people will NOT be okay with 2 remakes, equaling 4 games again. Unless it becomes DLC? But that alone creates problems where it would be entirely separate as you start the games off again from a new location, I just have no clue 😓 Also, if they go with the trend of removing the Battle Frontier and do the same by not including the PWT, people will lose their SHIT 😬

Ok I will say I’m kind of biased here because Gen 5 are my favorite games EVER but here’s my 2 cents: I really don’t believe that they are going to remake BW for a very long time because they don’t pale in comparison to quality towards the newer games in terms of technical and quality of life improvements. BW2 where pretty much send offs to the DS games as a whole and don’t have anywhere near the holes of say D/P As for how they will approach it when the day does come I would assume that they would remake just B/W and try to keep some elements of BW2 like putting other generations Pokémon and a PWT in some form. One thing I HOPE they experiment with is the difficulty modes that worked so well in BW2😤

Though I understand the perspective, I cannot help but disagree with the main premise. QoL is worthwhile and it does add to games. Without QoL, we'd still be at one bag section with an awful UI stat screen, clunky PC box mechanics, no shortcuts for using key items, limited use TMs, an annoyingly large number of required HMs, and so much more that just does not make the game more enjoyable for me. I think that the ORAS ideology of taking the Hoenn region and reinventing it with loads of awesome QoL features, new mechanics, cool mega evolutions, and a visual overhaul of the entire cast's designs and new OST was really fun, and it's still my favorite game.

It just feels like a bad excuse for why a game is just too easy. I don't think Pokémon games should be aimed at small children. They should be aimed at people of all ages. They can be approachable to small children without insulting the intelligence of older and more experienced players.

FRLG I think are pretty great games, and while I still prefer the original RB personally I think FRLG are better intros to Kanto for a modern audience. HGSS are simply my favorite Pokémon games period. And yes it is 90% because of walking Pokémon. I actually was very disappointed by ORAS because while I think they were better than RS they still had a lot of the same issues that made them inferior to Emerald. While I respect your opinion that the games may not be made for us older Pokemon fans, I have to disagree with it. I'm in my 30s now, and I still love Pokemon, and likely always will, I've enjoyed every Pokemon game that had come out, even the ones that were seen as bad. But Pokemon Diamond and its remake were the only ones I couldn't stand and never want to revisit. I felt the same way about Pokemon Shining Pearl as I did to Pokemon Diamond way back then. I enjoyed Pokemon Let's Go even though I didn't play it as much as other Pokemon games. My point is that the argument that people who are growing up or are already adults still enjoy Pokemon, and can't be expected to just leave the franchise behind simply because 'it's not made for us anymore'. As the saying goes 'you're dead if you aim only for kids. Adults are just kids grown up, anyway."

One argument I have never really liked with Pokemon is when people talk about how they are too easy and people go "Pokemon was never hard" or "Pokemon has always been for kids, you have just grown up". Okay, the first one. If Pokemon was "never hard" then why are we making it even easier? Like can someone honestly tell me that BDSP was harder than Diamon, Pearl or Platinum. Like.... C'mon, there has clearly been an effort to make the games much easier. I am not saying Pokemon Emerald or Platinum or whatever games are like Dark Souls difficult or anything because yes, they weren't known for being hard, but it is ridiculous to claim newer games have the same level of difficulty. I am not even saying that is inherently worse, just it is clear. Pokemon could really benefit from having a difficulty setting to be honest. The other one is that Pokémon may have a target audience of kids but I garuntee that if only kids were playing the franchise would be performing worse. Adults enjoy and play it and our opinions should be respected and not silenced with "well it isn't for you". If it is truly not for adults I don't get why there is so much Gen 1 nostalgia in the series, kids now didn't grow up with those games so who is that for? What I am saying isn't me just demanding Pokemon be what I want because it is the highest grossing media franchise in the world, it is clearly for everyone. So that makes me want the series to appeal to as many people as possible, keeping the long time fans invested and the new.

@@charnalk5572 I agree with some points and disagree with others. First of all when I say "newer games" I am thinking X and Y onwards. I don't consider Black and White/Black and White 2 to be new games anymore and I honestly think they are the peak of the franchise and my issues with Pokemon arnt to be found in them. But I do disagree in the sense that with Sword and Sheild and BDSP you can't turn off the EXP Share and your Pokémon are gaining levels for being in your party. Yes, you can turn it off in X and Y up until Ultra Sun and Moon but I still think for the most part the games are still easier. Also yeah, you can avoid Ammi and Refresh modes but to have to avoid a mode to make the game easier just feels backwards too me. But yeah, the battling it's self isn't necessarily easier if you could take all of those factors out but the sad part is they are still factors and the trainers in the game never force me into a challenge. Like still to this day, Cynthia is a challenge for me and from what I remember a few trainers in Gen 5 stood as a real challenge but I can breeze through Gen 6 - 8 without breaking a sweat. Diantha, Steven, Kukui, Leon and Cynthia in BDSP stood no chace but replaying Platinum just recently.... She is a hard fight. Now yes, I agree with what you said about the dungeons but I would say it is the difficulty but this type of difficulty could not be changed with a east mode. Sword and Sheild are the worst for dungeons but Gen 7 is probably bad because I found them so boring that I cabt even remember them. I agree witb the story and the linearity is a big reason I don't like Gen 7. I like a good story but I don't like being stopped every 2 secinds for the characters to tell me about it. Let me play the vame for god sake. Gen 2 had a pretty boring plot but the progression is good. Johto is small like you said but I don't mind it really and like how once you reach Ekruteak City you can do gym 5,6 and 7 in what ever order you want. But as a whole, I don't think anyone could convince me that newer games (Gen 6 onwards) are harder than previous to that. Legends Arceus is an exception and I hope it is signs of what is to come with Gen 9.
@TheZebbga
@TheZebbga 2 жыл бұрын
@@charnalk5572 I don't think you got this impression but just in case, I am not trying to say "Back in my day everything wad better and it should be like the past". No. Older generations had their own problems and Gen 1 especially had the reverse problem, being too hard at times but never because it was a fair challenge but just because it required some grinding. At the end of the day I can usually beat any Pokemon game without too much trouble, I don't think they are super hard and most the time which is fine, I am not asking them to be like Dark Souls hard. I just miss having to use my brain to play them. Like yeah, you can take steps to make the newer games harder or sure, but I don't want to have to try to make it hard, to me, that means they are easy games. Mega Evolutions, Z-Crystals and Dynamxing are all things that if you choose to not use them then the game is harder but they are a main feature of the games they are in. I want to use them but I feel they are just ballanced too poorly. I think the Totum Mimikyu is a good example of an extra challenge due to its ability, making you potentially waste your Z-Move if you have been over reliant on them, but a few noteable examples don't fix the problem as a whole. I really don't want to comment on the base Diamond and Pearl because I played Diamond in 2007 and ever since then only played Platinum so my memory isn't clear but I can't imagine BDSP being harder than Diamond and Pearl but it certainly isn't harder than Platinum. As I said, you can't turn off the EXP in BDSP and there is really no way to mitigate that. What am I supposed too do? Only travel with one Pokemon through the whole game? I feel like haveing to take drastic steps to avoid the ease is a sign that it is too easy. I mean heck, I had the lucky Egg in Platimum so my Pokemon were a comfortable level through most the game but Cynthia was still a challenge. I didn't lose, but I had to try. Like yes, I don't want to have to grind away for levels but at the same time they have gone way to far in the other direction to appeal too much to kids. Simply put, they should let me turn off the EXP share at the very least.

HGSS could have been in the running for the best games in the franchise if not for the bad level curve and the lack of team building variety. All of the Gen 2 Pokemon should have been in Jhoto at the very least. Better access to evolution stones would have been nice as well. I think this makes them the most disappointing remakes. We always call newer games lazy but how hard would it have been to fix these problems? ORAS could have been excellent as well if they weren't so easy. I'm not a fan of the new EXP share but at the very least, moving it to after the 8th badge to prevent pre-elite 4 grinding would have worked. Or just adding EXP after the 8th badge. People forget how tedious that grind can be. People always hate on newer Pokemon games but at least they do a better job with level scaling. I don't mind the Latios/Latias situation so much. Catching roaming legendaries wasn't so much a challenge so much it was tedious. Plus I tend to not use legendaries in my play throughs anyway. I don't see how this is any worse than the Level 70 Rayquaza you get access to before the 8th badge in Emerald that can sweep the Elite 4 and Champion by itself. The battle frontier would have been nice though. Fire Red and Leaf Green benefit from being in Kanto. It's one of the best regions in terms of team building variety due to lack of linear progression and buyable evolution stones. That being said, the way forward for remakes is more deviation from the originals. If I want the experience of the original games, I can just play the original games. There is more access to older Pokemon games than ever before. Plus there isn't as much to fix like there was in the original RBY.

HG/SS is kinda forgivable as, while they still stuck with some bad design decisions dating back to the originals, they did fix some of the bad pokemon placement with the safari zone, the level griding to Red with the gym leader/E4 rematches and the variety with being able to evolve some pokemon to their evos introduced in later gens (albeit some are stupidly locked behind the natdex, like Togekiss). Share being given to you makes sense as a lot of people never knew to go back to Devon Corp after delivering the letter to Steven in Dewford. I agree being gifted a Mega Legendary is too easy but the remakes are still fantastic. Team Magma and Aqua were far more fleshed out and made it more immersive. The Delta Episode was awesome and explained Rayquaza, unlike Ruby and Sapphire where you just randomly found a Green death dragon post-league if you wandered around Pacifidlog for some reason. If you hate otherworldly, you should HATE Gen IV based on Cyrus and the legendaries. Also, Emerald irks me. Replacing Steven made me so mad. I've been playing BDSP since release, and have been thoroughly enjoying them. They fix what is my biggest gripe regarding next-gen releases - accessibility to previous generations of Pokemon. The two games together include all Pokemon up to Gen 4. No buying extra consoles or older game cards (if you want to pay the currently INSANELY inflated prices); no trudging through older games and lengthy, complicated trading mechanisms to get them. While a look at the comments tells me people disagreed with your final statement, I felt it's very true for, not just Pokemon, but many long running gaming franchises. People have a hard time letting go of something that used to bring them so much joy when they were younger and that always saddens me since it's not really something I can relate with. I tend to just relax when playing games after work, so games like Pokemon getting easier or more focused on story appeals to me more now than it would have back when the only thing I had to worry about was if I got a good grade on my history test.

I was lucky enough to play sapphire from an older friend later so I embraced the changes in the remakes, course I’m not into battling so the lack of battle tower didn’t effect me. I feel like I’ve already spent so many hours with Pearl there’s no point playing the remake if it’s the exact same, ultra sun had more changes. But I honestly don’t mind cause I think Pokémon legends is a much more nostalgic and enriching experience for gen 4 players. I love walking around and seeing seeing what’s familiar and what’s not and really testing my memory. Like I was so giddy when I recognized the sound of the flute or found where giratina’s lair would be in the future. It always seems to come down to the Exp Share as the go to punching bag for why modern Pokémon games supposedly suck. Personally though the lack of Exp Share is consistently the biggest reason I find it hard to go back to older games. I loved the introduction of the new full party wide Exp Share as a key item in X/Y, not because it made my team over-leveled, but because it made it easy to get any new Pokémon I caught along the way up to speed, and with a regional dex of 450 Pokémon, there was always something new to catch on every route. Because I was constantly rotating my team, none of my Pokémon even got over-leveled to begin with, and that's the real trick of it. Getting around triple the exp gain means being able to train triple the amount of Pokémon without any need to resort to grinding. Of course it also can mean getting over-leveled, if the player only ever sticks to a single team of six, but the same was equally true back in the older games if only ever using couple mons, as almost anyone who has done a starter only "challenge" run knows. Even type disadvantage aren't enough to slow down a juiced up starter, which by end game can easily be 20+ levels higher than the league champion. The problem as I see it is that players just got overly used to planning out their entire playthrough teams in advance. I always see people posting teams of six before the games even come out, seemingly with the clear intent to use ONLY those six for the entire run, and maybe that made sense before the party wide Exp Share, as it was the best way to cut down on grinding. New mechanics, however, should be approached with new play styles. In games with such a wide and ever growing variety creatures to choose from, why limit yourself to only a narrow subset? Embrace the extra exp. If any one Mon starts getting over-leveled, trade it out and experiment with something else for a while. You could even discover new favorites along the way you might otherwise have overlooked.

That’s great and all for people who play like you, but this overlooks just how simple it is to give people choice again. Why is it so hard to just make it an item that can be turned on and off again? There was no issue with the older games by sticking to a consistent team of 6 more or less throughout the entire game. Hell, titles like Platinum can be a struggle even when you don’t rotate out anybody at all and stay with a consistent team right until endgame. The games’ structure is still pretty much the same so their deciding to make the exp share constant and permanent doesn’t really seem to have a strong ethos.

@@maximumbeans9310: Any game can always be made harder through the use of self-imposed challenges. While I would still agree that having in-game options to make the game harder could make the game more appealing to "hardcore" players, I would disagree with any assertion that those kinds of options are essential. Truly hardcore players will always find a way to make anything HARDCORE.
@maximumbeans9310
@maximumbeans9310 2 жыл бұрын
@@EmeralBookwise That isn't what I'm trying to assert, as I actually don't mind the baseline difficulty of most games. I don't usually impose my own challenges or try to make the games more hardcore, but as the games have never been that hard to begin with, the permanent exp share feels like a really unnecessary addition and I don't understand why they're moved in the opposite direction of choice to no choice as opposed to keeping it more open for players.
@EmeralBookwise
@EmeralBookwise 2 жыл бұрын
@@maximumbeans9310: fair enough. What I will say is that "difficulty" or more specifically the features and settings that can make a game easier or harder can very much be about crafting an experience. Exp Share is a feature that is very much conducive to using a wider variety of Pokémon and swapping them around to meet different encounters or even just to experiment. A very specific play style to be sure, but one that also very much feels in line with the old catchphrase, _"Gotta Catch'em All!"_ Admittedly, I think the Exp Share should have remained optional, but I can see how removing that option is like the devs making a statement of intent. Of course it's up to each player whether to embrace the mechanics a game presents them with or chafe against them. Just maybe though, next time you or any one else reading this is playing any of the games with Exp Share, maybe consider experimenting, maybe see what it feels like to play with a larger rotating team. Maybe it won't suit you, maybe you'll still hate the feature, but maybe you might find a new way to enjoy the game... ...or not, it's all your choice.

@@EmeralBookwise Yeah I do agree that it can be encouragement to mix up playstyle for the right players who are receptive of it. I also played through Shield recently, and while overall I didn't like the full-party exp, it didn't completely ruin the structure of the game like some people claimed. As long as I didn't hang around in some areas to grind, it stayed fairly consistent.

One great thing about the older remakes were that they always improved upon or created new sprites. FRLG redid every gen 1 sprite and HGSS did many new sprites for all Pokémon. Obviously with 3D there wasn’t a point to redo the models, but it just allows more appreciation for the effort put into the older remakes.

I actually think looking back on it in 2022. The let's go games did so much in terms of pokemon mechanics ans presentation. It's the first game with pokemon in the overworld. Pokemon companions were back and need to be back in every game GF, Protagonist and cutscenes that actually make the protagonist character emote accordingly( looking at you sun and moon protag), removal of HMs in Kanto and so on.

One reason why I like remakes is it gives new players the opportunity to the play these games without having to find the original game and hardware second hand. And the quality of life changes are great, I honestly don't even like playing the original red and blue because of how old it is. The remakes solve a lot of issues and make it so much easier to play

Honestly, I was so fucking disappointed with ORAS. I have insane amounts of nostalgia for Emerald, and I fully expected ORAS to meet the standards set by FRLG and HGSS. I expected it to either be a straightforward remake without that much change like FRLG, or to have a lot of new content _without removing old content_ like HGSS. I really liked the revamped secret bases and the postgame story with Zinnia, but I didn't like how they removed the Battle Frontier and turned Sky Pillar into a glorified series of ladders instead of turning it into an actual dungeon. They also removed the Game Corner instead of just changing it a little like ORAS did. The excuses they used for removing the Battle Frontier and for why the game is so much easier were both incredibly insulting. I didn't like how they tried comparing ORAS to mindless mobile games. And not ever mentioning the people who actually grew up with RSE felt very alienating. It really felt like they didn't really bother with trying to make ORAS the absolute definitive way to play through Hoenn, and that's really sad. You mentioned how HGSS respected the older fans, and it's so asinine that ORAS didn't do the same.

I think a proper modern remake of Gen 1 would be pretty cool. HGSS is fine as is, so I'd just like to see a re-release that fixes some issues, and maybe adds new content. Hoenn and Sinnoh need re-remakes the most. But they shouldn't happen anytime soon.

As someone who has played pokemon all my life, the biggest difference in the games was the difficulty. With and after X and Y the games have been significantly easier, the reduction in difficulty is the main reason I do not like the newer games. Dont get me wrong, I completely stomp the older games but it was a challenge at some point. It feels earned to me. Games after X and Y does not feel earned anymore. I do not feel like a champion, more like someone who just turned up one day and the league committee just voted me champion.

It says a lot that the first pokemon game I played was pokemon diamond, it was the second video game I ever beat after lego star wars, and when brilliant diamond anf shining pearl came out, they were the first pokemon games (except usum because they were too similar to sun/moon that I couldn't justify it to myself to buy the same game again) that I didn't get, I look at all of the trailers for bdsp and go "this doesn't look bad, but all it makes me want to do is pull out my DS again and play the original games". At least these remakes are ways to have the older experiences be at least somewhat presevered for people who don't have the older hardware, especially as old pokemon games are ridiculously expensive now. That said part of me would prefer more direct ports of a bunch of the older games to the switch for a relatively low price rather than a full price remake of one game every half decade.

I was struggling to find faith in the Pokémon franchise when Sword and Shield came and just started showing the complete lack of effort on the developers part, but when I saw just how much of bd&sp were just an exact copy & paste of with very minor new differences from the originals, that was the final straw for me. I’m not giving up Pokémon, as I will never be able to give up a series I grew up with and love so much, but it is definitely not the same anymore and I don’t know if it ever will be. Too much has changed and imo, not for the better and that just breaks my heart.

Having nuzlocked the shit out of bdsp, the limited tm uses is kind of an interesting feature to bring back. You have to manage your resources just like you did back in the day. You can't just say "you get earthquake, you get earthquake, you get earthquake..." Also, these games were built basically as spinoffs anyways not being the focal point of competitive battling. If you planned to optimize your pokemon, sword and shield are right there anyways.

You know, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were not the first games where the post-game had you catching a ton of legendaries. Heart Gold and Soul Silver had plenty of that too. They added Kanto legendaries to catch that weren't in the original games, Latios or Latias, and Groudon or Kyogre. Black 2 and White 2 had even more legendaries from outside their region. Cresselia, the whole lake trio, at least 2 Regis, and Latios or Latias again. And those are two of the games that fans regard as the best in the series. Obviously the problem isn't the legendary collectathon itself, but making it the only post-game content. I feel like that point wasn't clear enough. And I for one favor the story focused direction that ORAS went. I wouldn't call that an objectively bad thing. After all, Black and White are some of the most beloved games in the series because they're so story focused. I like how ORAS tried to offer something new and different that heavily modernized the original games, but you do make a good point that this wasn't balanced enough with keeping the spirit of the originals.

The Gen 1 remakes on GBA were important for the other half of the hardcore fanbase, the shiny hunters/collectors, in a completely inverse way that RSE were for the hardcore competitive base. I quit Pokemon after finishing the 'dexes in RBY/GS because I couldn't transfer my teams upwards. FR/LG gave me a way to get my favorites back, and I've stayed since. If FR/LG hadn't come I probably wouldn't be here watching this now. Also I really liked the Latias/Latios Soaring. I didn't like Gen 3 on release, so maybe that's the divergent point.
