Correction: I mixed up splits and footage for two players and in the end both of their results were either not reported or erroneously reported. Hazardville finished with a time of: 2:58:27 TridantPhantasm finished with a time of: 1:49:54 My apologies to both of these players! I need a better behind the scenes process for managing this amount of footage and data. I'll work on that for next time!

@ScottsThoughts - Halfway through the video and listening to "needs more time" being a common issue for most of the participants in the race I wanted to make a suggestion. Next time you do one of these races I think you should give the race itself 10 days worth of time. This would allow for something like 48 hours of strategizing based on what you all already know about the game being played over the first two days. Five days to do dummie runs to figure out what strategies you each want to commit to. And finally three days to play runs with the strategies you decided to commit to, plus pick which one you want to submit from those runs, for the race itself. It also gives wiggle room time wise for anything that might get in your way elsewhere in your lives like work or family obligations if any of you have children or elders in your family that you're directly responsible for, as well as robbing you of less time with your significant other(s) if you're not single. For the editing process I would also suggest pacing yourself more Scott. Try editing the race's video over the course of a month a little bit at a time instead of burning yourself out.
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Жыл бұрын
@@shimauta1941 I appreciate the suggestions! The compressed timeframe for both competition and production is actually better for me. It means I can complete the project while I have hyper-fixation and inspiration. If I let projects linger too long I burn through my excitement and then motivating myself becomes near impossible. This is the reason Parasect took way too long to finish. This race was an attempt to revise my process and try the more compressed style to see if this would be a workable format moving forward. I do think more than 3 days is probably best. However, I need to figure out how to pull that off without my energy running out before I can finish the project. It's a tough thing to balance.

@@mutevampire It's crazy because that run happened on Saturday (the race time was over at 12 midnight on Sunday) so I played awful and had bad luck throughout that run but I was like alright I got like 36 hours to do better. It's weird it ended up being the best. I can only imagine the potential if I didn't have an absolute garbage time on the Brock split, had bad Hyper Fang luck on Rival 2, and the multiple, multiple resets on Lorelei. Backporting Smeargle to Yellow was such a cool idea for a race and the strategies that resulted from it were really something to behold. Loved the obscure depths people went to in order to find the best moves and the really wildly different paths and optimizations. This was an extremely strong choice for a race and the video was also really well produced, very much enjoyed watching the 3rd/4th and 1st/2nd place duels at the end. Thanks for all the hard work you put into this, because it really delivered IMO.

This was one of the first few times I speedran Pokémon Yellow. My first ever time with Smeargle was a 2:13:32 with following moveset: Amnesia, Headbutt, Dig and Clamp (yeah, even then I said no to sleep moves) I really was fun, shame that you only had 4 days to complete and submit a run; maybe a week is more appropriate. There’s also moves like Leech Seed, Confusion & Body Slam at your disposal!

Really fun race! Smeargle has always had a bit of a special place in my heart, especially in the context of an actual playthrough where you're not just optimising for competitive movesets, but for what you can actually find! My only feedback would be that I wouldn't mind some fancier graphs for how the players were progressing. One thing that I think woulda been really nice would be level vs splits, and ofc time vs splits, with a tracking line for each player, maybe with colouration by the broad strategies you outlined. Obviously more work, but I really enjoy the analysis you've done here and the broad strokes discussions of how all the different runs went. I think you've done a really good job analysing the different strategies/needs/risks that different players used/dealt with! (but, ofc, that analysis is what all your videos boil down to!)

Smeargle was such a fun pokemon to try and speedrun the game with, because it can be any kind of attacker you want it to be,so it was really interesting to see in which direction everyone will take that given Smeargle to.😊 I really had fun taking part in this race,and I can't wait for next one.😆

Possibly the best Pokemon for a level playing field race, the choices and knowledge that goes into obtaining some of these movesets is inspiring. I was moving house the weekend the race took place, but given the time I probably would have tried to formulate a novelty run with Smeargle's final moveset including the moves Surf, Strength and Cut - potentially by having a wild Ditto transform into a HM user then copying the HM move from the Ditto.

Hey Scott, I know you read all your comments. So I would like to let you know I found your channel a few months ago, and I love watching your content. As well as your stories growing up with the pokemon games. Brings back a lot of nostalgia. Also, with this comment, I have completed watching all of your videos. Keep up the great work!!!

A little correction abiut the missing pokeballs comment: that is just an indicator of the current catch rate in gen 1. 3 shakes means you had a high chance to catch on that throw. 2 shakes means a smaller chance. 1 shake means a smaller chance. The Pokéball missing is the lowest catchrate range. Now, no matter what the odds are of catching the Pokémon is, it CAN catch, even if its missing. Meaning soon as your Pokéball hits instead of misses, congrats! You dont even need to wait for the shakes to know you caught it.

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon well don’t let it be lost on you it shows. They are well thought out and you do a great job of laying them out to build suspense. I am literally on the edge of my seat toward the end to see who is gonna pull off the victory. Thanks for your commitment to quality.

These races are starting to function more like the Xgames where there are different competitions within one sport. Like Skateboarding Vert, Park, Street etc. The race is Smeargle in Pokémon Yellow but the multiple categories are things like fastest time, Bide challenge, fastest rest free challenge, meme move set challenge

Another idea is a Eevee Race. You could even mod in Espeon evolving from Moon Stone and/or Leafeon from the Leaf stone.
