I tried to listen to a Sting solo cd in the car a little while ago, and there were some Police songs on there. They just felt so empty without Andy and Stewart though. The sound of the whole group is just so addictive, and Sting is fine on his own (my favorite example would be him backing on Money for Nothing--such a good song!), he just has only a third of the police spirit.

Benedetto, Hello from Stratford upon Avon !! My quintessentially English husband taught in Sicily MANY years ago and before I met him .This was one of the reasons I was attracted to him, cos he’s really far too vague and quiet for me, but I thought it was bloody exciting that he’d taken off for a year on his own. He taught English in Ragusa for a year, and when the Sicilians wanted to insult him they yelled out ‘ Tedesco ‘ as in those days he had fair floppy hair !! Of course, in those days he had to queue for hours to have a phone call put through to his mother ( no mobile phones clearly ! ). He is quite a cultured bloke and still speaks a bit of ‘ Sicilian ‘ Italian. Soon after we got married he inherited a bit of money and took me to Sicily- I HATED it!! Not helped by the dreadful wet weather in the October when we visited after he’d assured me the weather would be mild !! He’s never dared ask me to go back again, BUT he knew Casa Cuseni and Daphne Phelps who owned it through some family connection ! BUT, as I’m now very ill with cancer he asked me if I’d like to visit Casa Cuseni again as Daphne Phelps has now died and it’s a small exclusive hotel. I said that would be very nice, as I did remember that Taormina was just beautiful. Well, you can’t get in for love nor money, so that may be a non starter !! Never been to Palermo ( home of the mafia ) but William has lots of slides etc of beautiful places like Agrigento which I’d like to visit. Only met Daphne Phelps once when we visited her home, and the only real memory I have of that visit is a man being there who’d been in a nazi concentration camp and showed my the number tattooed on his arm. I gather later on one occasion Dylan Thomas’s widow turned up at the house with her Italian lover and being a real drunk, nearly wrecked the place !! I love mainland Italy and Italian food, but though I think the men are generally really gorgeous they all seem to be bonkers to me !! Have comments on here re Dire Staits ‘ Walk of Life ‘ and the Palio in Siena and clearly the Italians ARE bloody bonkers !! Ciao ! By the way, I have an A star in Italian GCSE from about 10 years ago, but tend to push my luck and ask for a ‘ sconto ‘ rather than ‘ il conto ‘ !! Christine !!!

The Police were an English rock band formed in London in 1977. For most of their history the line-up consisted of primary songwriter Sting (lead vocals, bass guitar), Andy Summers (guitar) and Stewart Copeland (drums, percussion). The Police became globally popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Emerging in the British new wave scene, they played a style of rock influenced by punk, reggae, and jazz. Their 1978 debut album, Outlandos d'Amour, reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart on the strength of the singles "Roxanne" and "Can't Stand Losing You". Their second album, Reggatta de Blanc (1979), became the first of four consecutive No. 1 studio albums in the UK and Australia; its first two singles, "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon", became their first UK number ones. Their next two albums, Zenyatta Mondatta (1980) and Ghost in the Machine (1981), led to further critical and commercial success with two songs, "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", becoming UK number-one singles and Top 5 hits in other countries; the former album was their breakthrough into the US reaching number five on the US Billboard 200. Their final studio album, Synchronicity (1983), was No. 1 in the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy and the US, selling over 8 million copies in the US. Its lead single, "Every Breath You Take", became their fifth UK number one, and only US number one. During this time, the band were considered one of the leaders of the Second British Invasion of the US; in 1983 Rolling Stone labelled them "the first British New Wave act to break through in America on a grand scale, and possibly the biggest band in the world. The Police disbanded in 1986, but reunited in early 2007 for a one-off world tour that ended in August 2008. They were the world's highest-earning musicians in 2008, due to their reunion tour, which was the highest-grossing tour of 2007. The Police have sold over 75 million records, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. The band won a number of music awards, including six Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards-winning Best British Group once, and an MTV Video Music Award. In 2003, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Four of their five studio albums appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". The band were included among both Rolling Stone's and VH1's lists of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".

Maybe it's because I have a lonely life, but I love this song more than any other of their songs. Sometimes I like to play it VERY LOUD as it's got great dynamics, and sing loud over it.

Not sure "underrated" is the right term. They were one of the most successful bands of the 80's. They music was critically acclaimed at the time. They were only a together for 6 years.

Stewart Copeland, in all of The Police videos, uses almost any surfaces to play his drumsticks on LOL...I guess he needs to be active.

This is a TRIBUTE to all my young students of Classe 3H e 3D of ITE Bodoni in Parma, Italy for how LOVELY they are. Most of us in these two classes are ALONE but do not feel LONELY at all. As their teacher, I often remind them of this lovely lyrics and of the fact that we, as a patient and perseverant fisherman, better wait for the right catch rather than eatingt an ORDINARY sardine that happens to pass near our fishing rod. As a matter of fact, their teacher is ALONE since mid November 2019 waiting for the right catch to pass by his fishing rod. Sometimes is healthy to stay hungry in front of all this food we have around us. It tempers your soul and, especially, teaches you how to control your animal instincts. Happy San Valentine's day to EVERYONE, especially those who have the STAMINA to wait, no matter what!

The super upbeat tone & pace of this song starkly contrasting with the sad depressing thing Sting is singing about, and how well they make these things go together, is an example of the brilliance of The Police!
