Ashton Smith Very True, as back at that time, while filming the series, they DID allow for laughter and a little goofin off. Bill Shatner was good for that, however, it was sad that in later years, all the other sctors and actresses were very negetive towards Bill, and wrote and said some really nasty things abouf him in the later years after the show went off the air. This is why Bill Shatner doesn't want much to do with any of them anymore as it hurt his feelings. He won't show it outward, however inward, if shows. I say, Bill Shatner was an excellent pick as the Captain and don't think that with anybody else, it wouldn't be the dynamic inpact it still has to this very day, from past, present and future. Bill Shatner is an excellent actor. Much better than that patrick stewart clown in that next generation garbage, which is childish, stupid and should have been cancelled from the very first episode.
@kellyrayburn4093

Dan Basta Actually from what I've seen of his work, which admittedly is only Star Trek and Dune, Patrick Stewart is a very good actor. This isn't to belittle Shatner. I do agree Shatner does seem a bit better, but I've seen more variety of Shatner's work than I have Stewart's. I was very impressed by Shatner's performance in The Intruder (also released as "I Hate Your Guts", "Shame", and "The Stranger"). I couldn't stand his character, but he played it superbly and did the job he was supposed to do; i.e. make the audience hate the very ground the character walked on. He should have gotten an Academy Award for that performance.

No such thing as a no fault divorce when this aired, either. Someone had to be at fault and that had to be explained to a judge with testimony and/or evidence. Somebody had to be a cheater, an abuser, neglectful... it couldn't be that you just didn't get along that well.

Back in the 60s, everything was censored. Unlike today where everything is acceptable, whether it should be or not. Television and movies had to be careful what and how things were said and done. Star Trek was known for breaking some of those taboos, by how the scripts were written. Maybe, this world would be a little better if people were more careful what they say and do.

But when I watched the series I just didn't get that sense from those two. I could tell that the two very much cared for one another, but not in a romantic way. It felt like it was the kind of relationship that began with friendship, and then it grew so that they were as close as brothers. When I first saw this episode this was the first time I had ever heard of the Pon'Farr the Vulcan mating ritual and the only other time it was ever brought up was in the Star Trek Voyager season 3 episode 'Blood Fever' where a member of Voyager's crew a Vulcan ensign was going through his very first Pon'Farr and the ships Emergency Medical Hologram was asking him and Tuvok how they're people deal with it and how like Spock they didn't talk about it and it caused some problems for Vulcans being telepathic and Ensign Vorik caused Lt. B'Elanna Torres to go through the same primal instincts of her Klingon heritage and caused Lt. Tom Paris to get involved in the ritual combat for B'Elanna against Vorik in order to help both of them.
