I love Spock and Uhura but unfortunately we only saw glimpses of them together on the original series. Moments from Who Mourns for Adonais?, Charlie X, That Which Survives, Is There No Truth in Beauty, Tomorrow is Yesterday, The Immunity Syndrome, The Man Trap, The Changeling and Bread and Circuses.
EDIT: I made a mistake in labeling - The clip "Are you alright, Lieutenant? is actually from the episode Tomorrow is Yesterday.

When he found out that she was getting paid less than the others, Leonard Nimoy spoke up, and got her pay raised.

Nichelle Nichols, $8 million Star Trek Koenig: When it came to the attention of the cast that there was a disparity in pay in that George [Takei] and I were getting the same pay but Nichelle was not getting as much, I took it to Leonard and he took it to the front office and they corrected that. DeForest Kelley, $5 million Star Trek: The Original Series James Doohan, $7 millionWalter Koenig, $8 million Ensign Chekov Star Trek: The Original Series George Takei, $12 million Star Trek: The Original Series I tried looking up info about salaries, couldn't find any. But, I found this info about earnings, from the franchise. As you can see, NIchelle made the same as Walter Koenig(Chekov). But, More than DeForest Kelly and James Doohan. However, she made less than George Takei. I agree, she probably wasn't making as much as the men. Even after Nimoy corrected the situation, about the pay disparity. And, being it was in the 1960s, more so.

I'm puzzled that Nichols, Takei, and Doohan were all making more than DeForest Kelley, who was the third lead after Shatner and Nimoy. Can that really be so?

@Roderick Long Why not? Remember this isn't a movie. Actors in tv series expecially back at the time were mosty like paid per day on set. Some actors got more screen time than others. Bones wasn't constantly on the bridge, for example. And, as expected on a star ship bridge, we see turn over of bridge officers. Basicly, when helm had something lenghty to say/do, they would put Takei, otherwise helm was an extra, whose line was 'Aye captain'. This kinda changed as the actors became more and more well known, and got a fan base; in later seasons they were rarely replaced by extras, so you would see the full cast on the bridge for most episodes. I'm sure Nichols had a lot of fans (she still has) so very often she would be expected to be seen, even if only in the background of a scene between two other actors (as in Kirk-Spock exchanges). That meant a lot of screen time even if with (relatively) fewer spoken lines. How much that impacted on her paycheck I have no idea. The same holds for Sulu and Checkov, who were often included in shots of the bridge. But point is that what we should compare isn't much the amount of money the actors made in the series, but rather how much they were paid per day. I'm sure DeForest Kelly wasn't paid less per day than other actors. Maybe he just spent less days on set. Today is different because cast members negotiate salary per season (or multiple seasons even), based on estimated screen time, Hence, designated leads tend to earn more.

@@katherinkeegan8601 I love that idea. Uhura is such a professional when on duty and it counts, but so human, soft and even playful, when she can let her guard down. Uhura having her guard down around Spok is showing appreciation of Spok in her very own and most honest way. But also: Spok explicitly sees her as one of the best in starfleet and perfect in her communication officer role - so her showing him how to be "more starfleet" in communication is logical - it is only logical to learn from the best.

That scene where she's singing with Spock has always been one of my favorites of the entire series. That relationship between Spock and Uhura in the new TOS wasn't an anomaly. Originally, there was going to be one between them, and you can see it in the earliest episodes. That musical scene in Charlie X is the clearest - the vibe between them is incredibly obvious. But the fan letters the show was getting from early on made it clear the audience would be displeased by it, so the idea was scrapped. (The same was true of Janice - she was intended to be a girlfriend for Kirk.)
@moso299
@moso299 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I never really noticed until now the early parallel (the way Rand encourages Uhura to hit on Spock). I think this was two episodes (in production order) after she tried to get him to woo her ("Vulcan has no moon"). Personally, I think all that went away when Gene Coon took over as show runner and tightened things to be more hard-hitting and plot-oriented.

"I decided then from the character that I read [Spock] that I wanted to be very much like that character but in a feminine way. And Gene [Roddenberry] said, and I was sharing this with George [Takei] the other day, when I told him that I thought of Spock as my mentor. Because if you remember Uhura was the only one he was able to teach the Vulcan lyre to and he sang and spooffed on Spock. Now, you could have never had a love scene in 63 between Uhura and Spock but there were several hints and Gene was one in the kind of beginning to follow that and he wanted to do episodes if we had gone past the third year" - Nichelle Nichols “I felt from the original reading that Spock was my mentor, and that emotionally they were very much alike. Many times Uhura would just look and say volumes. She was extremely loyal to Captain Kirk, and was following him to ‘where no man has gone before,’ through thick and thin, but it was Spock who fascinated her, and inspired her mentally and professionally.” - Nichelle Nichols in a 1987 interview excerpted in The Star Trek Interview Book by Allan Asherman "There was always a connection between Uhura and Spock. It was the early 60’s, so you couldn’t do what you can do now"

MarleneWitch that's sweet. Her real mentor was Gene whom she was having an affair with before he cast her. He cast her because NBC (yes NBC) insisted on more black actors, told Solow of Desilu who agreed and told Roddenberry...who didn't look interested according to Solow. There was almost no diversity in the main cast of either pilot. The Network wanted more women in senior roles and more Black and Asian actors. Yeah the network and remember Desilu was owned by Lucy. A couple weeks later Gene came in with Nichelle, a Jazz singer PT actress, who had worked an episode of the Lieutenant. Solow and Justman pushed the white boy out of the the communications chair to the navigator and sat her there in a gold minidress. That was the shooting of Corbomite. The white boy went on to live with Balok. Another producer came on the set and said, Herb that's another one of Gene's mistresses. Next show she got a red minidress as the visual was sexier on RCA TVs...and she had a job and a series contract. A much better contract than Takei got. She got paid whether she was on an episode or not. She'd leave for concert tours. George and the other junior grade officers only got paid for screen minutes and episode appearance. You'll notice a lot of the exact same stock shot of Sulu looking back at the captain, but with new things on the screen. Those cheap bastards. Oh first rule of Gene Roddenberry. He is always his own hero.

@@floydlooney6837 which you didn't see on screen till nearly Christmas. And that actress was Gene's steady mistress at the time. Gene was married with children. NBC said she has to go. Not the role, but Majel Barret. (source Robert Justman and... Herb Solow who was Gene's network liaison and manager). He dropped her as told, and tightened the cast by promoting Spock and bringing on Takei as science officer. Roddenberry didn't like Takei after working with him and wanted him fired. NBC said no. They wanted more diversity on the bridge, so he became helmsman and Spock got both positions. By the third episode, GR had brought in Majel through the back door with a blonde wig. When Solow noticed after two weeks of filming, he said ehhhh give it to him. Producers are sleezy. Star Trek is like sausage and the law. Those that love it don't really want to know how it is made. It worked out OK.

The moment when Spock specifically calls out Uhura's qualification as a communications officer is great, but I think I liked even more the subtle general impression of the same, including when she sits at navigation. Over the years when the show was stripped and shown in reruns five and seven days a week they cut so many of these scenes in particular out I had forgotten about them, and on my review of the scenes today it's obvious that the director JJ Abrams in his review of the series before writing the substance of the new movies in the Newtimes sphere was inspired by the very scenes that they had eliminated in reruns over the years, thank you for reminding me with these clips of all the rich substance that had been lost over time by the editors and the low rent TV stations trying to maximize profit at the expense of a magnificent American icon celebrated around the world in many cultures, it's no wonder this is the most profitable television show & theme that has ever existed.

Love how Spock is quick to rush to Uhura's aid when she is in distress: (1) 0:37 - Uhura has been knocked to the ground, and Spock quickly comes over to lift her back to her feet (OOPS moment as Uhura's white panties peek out from underneath her uniform 😊); (2) 3:04 - When Uhura nearly faints, it is Spock who rushes over and helps guide her back to her chair.

Uhura was like Jackie Robinson. She behaved according to a higher standard because her role as a pioneer required her to. The better able she was to handle the pressure and shine, the more likely there would be more. Something i wish our current President was a little more in tune with.

Spock's character as portrayed by Leonard Nimoy was half human and Leonard played upon this fact to show a Spock who was not governed by his emotions but still not unaffected by them and he would let this be shown in subtle ways. It was his internal struggle and one that is mirrored in our own species where we try to maintain principles and be governed by our intellects while dealing with the daily frustrations, yearnings, and impulses that are part of our animal nature. Spock's human companions were always provoking him in order to test his devotion to logic and emotional detachment and typically he would reply with some dead pan wit that smacked of restrained irritation. Despite not being emotional, Spock was compassionate. He did not believe in unnecessary killing, or leaps to judgment. Like a good scientist, he sought to understand something first before reacting to it and this is what made Spock cool. I think this was part of his appeal to women like Uhura, this quiet confidence. He was the perfect counterweight to Kirk who was more impulsive and governed by instinct and thinking on his feet. That's what made this show work is that each of the characters had something unique to contribute.

Nimoy refused to do the animation series when he found out that they would not hire Nichelle and George due to cost issues. He argued that a cultural diverse bridge was part of Rodenberry's vision. The studio agreed and brought them both back.

JJ made what Gene wanted a reality. It is just beautiful. And if you think the evidence is flimsy, simply research interviews with the cast of TOS Leonard Nimoy and Michelle Nichols both confirm what Gene Roddenberry (the creator, btw) wanted.

My fave Uhura/Spock moment is actually from the book "Uhura's Song." She was trying to act in a logical Vulcan manner to help the situation they were in. At one point Spock asked her why she was acting so out of character and she told him. His response was, while he appreciated the effort and her intent "I find that I prefer the authentic Uhura to the counterfeit Vulcan."

Even when I was a kid back in 1984 and they used to run the episodes on Channel 11...even I knew there was something between Uhura and Spock. I watched every episode and can pinpoint the exact episode where Kirk became the main plot, while other characters were sidelined. I mean, I was expecting Spock to put on the charm and start macking Uhura but then it became the Captain Kirk show and everything changed. It sucked but yes, a lot of us remember the scenes between Uhura and Spock, as well as the chemistry that was so obviously there. Wish they had gone further and explored it...but it was the 1960s and even in the eighties...even as a kid, I knew the score. Things like that were still taboo.
