What is the power of a having bittersweet outlook? To explore this topic deeper, I’m thrilled to have bestselling author Susan Cain on our show today.
If you’re like most people, you’ve probably felt the pressure to always look on the bright side and act happy no matter what. While there is a place for optimism and positivity, you may actually be doing yourself a terrible disservice by burying your sad and melancholy feelings all the time.
Susan is the author of "QUIET: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking and Quiet Power: The Secret Strengths of Introverts." Through her powerful TED talk, she has helped millions of introverts feel seen and understood.
In her latest book "Bittersweet: How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole", she discovered that sadness and melancholy are key to achieving transcendence and feeling connected to others.
Susan’s journey began by wanting to understand why people are drawn to rainy days and sad songs. She discovered that tapping into those bittersweet emotions can help you open your heart and see the world through new eyes. Listen in as Susan explains how finding beauty in sorrow, heartache, and longing can help you feel less alone.

I was thinking about the reason for the tears in those moments. For me it's because it's the first time I have experienced this beautiful (to me) thing, and it is also possibly the last time. Thank you for this! :)

Thanks for such an uplifting and insightful conversation! As someone who regularly ugly cries at Pixar and anime soundtracks, a lot of things clicked haha. Excited to read this book and watch the TedTalk now!

We have all positive and negative traits within us. It is which side we pay attention. When we let the auto mode take control our lives, we are same as animals -- action with minimum thought process.
