For Turkish novelist Elif Shafak, one of the biggest mistake of contemporary intellectuals is the massive underestimation of the power of emotions. "We have to enter into the world of emotions and to connect with people with anxiety", the award-winning author says, "and the intellectuals have not done a good job in adressing other people’s anxiety." Though Shafak sees no need to fetishize experts, she is convinced that experts and intellectuals are necessary for our societies. "There is an anti-intellectual trend, and it is very disturbing." Her advice for intellectuals is to get out of their own echo chambers and to communicate diversity.
