To have been a fly on the wall of these painters' ateliers and watch them as they composed and deliberated, and painted and then painted over, again and again...

We're still living the drama of creating art-- I'm with you in that I'd like to observe how other artists solve problems, struggle with a piece, find solutions...over and over again. I'm unapologetic about continuing the tradition of occasional Academic copywork-- it's how I "get into the mind" of a different artist, expand and flex my own problem-solving skills. As VanGogh once hinted, it's our capacity for work which brings us gain, and contentment.

Loving how these videos highlights the careful thought and planning the masters brought to their work. Sure, I believe in spontaneous and "seat of the pants" approaches, especially in my chosen medium of watercolor, but the classic disciplines of drawing, composition and color expression are vital foundations even in such casual and seemingly improvised paintings. Thanks as always for these reminders.

When you have a go at copying one of these master painters you begin to realise how skilled they were. But they grafted away to get that skill and talent. Excellent presentation, thank you.

Thank you so much for this forum-- a chance to share ideas, and participate in the excitement of the realist tradition in painting. There's so much immediate about works which are cited in your video presentations. Once again, thanks.

I love the end photo of the studio full of students. Everyone has a hipster look and could walk around today and fit right in anywhere!
