Mr. Szabo- I'm so grateful that I attended Geffen Academy and had you as a teacher and mentor. Thank you for everything that you do and for always believing in me. I wouldn't have gotten to where I am today without you!

This is nice. The biggest problem with mental health is that no one is teaching trauma informed care and non-judgmental language and approaches, aka "meeting people where they are at." And you don't even bother to mention cultural differences. Trauma informed care is also a DEI initiative and is accessible to everyone who is willing to meet people's emotions where they are at, accept it, and validate from a place of compassion and common understanding of the human struggle. This talk is, at best, a re-tread of a coping skill or self-care training you can receive just about anywhere.

I believe both of these approaches are important. Trauma informed care is critical in schools for people to support students and address what they need to learn. There are many trauma informed programs that are effective. Those programs help address a piece of the mental health crisis. What is also true is that people of all cultures don't have a language for mental health. Schools in this country do not teach mental health. Part of the reason they don't teach about mental health is because they don't have a public health approach to take. In my decades of work and in the school I helped create, we have evidence based data that shows a language for mental health is a strong baseline for everyone. As you said the solutions can't be an either or situation. We need as many programs as possible.
