I think there is something more satisfying about learning how to do more with less than always wanting the best - it’s a mentally exhausting upgrade cycle - and probably - we’re not gonna make better content because we have the latest camera - we’ll just get a small high and have less money in the bank

Small cheap cameras are the best way to learn the basics - without getting overwhelmed by a huge range of functionality and menu options etc. It also helps to figure out, which more advanced features you really need (if any). I often ended up with cameras which where highly praised (and expensive) but they did not match well my needs and working style. For a better image quality it also makes more sense to invest first into other equipment (e.g. light, lenses and helpful accessories) and to learn how to push the limits of your cheap camera by honing your skills before you upgrade. Your channel is a great example. Your LUT is gorgeous and makes the videos from a cheap camera looking amazing and if I remember right it costs only $15. Even your old GH3 videos are standing the test of time.

I have a G80 and a G9 mk1. I find the G80 a noticeably smaller and lighter camera with great 1080/60 autofocus. 4k autofocus is not good so either use the focus ring or press the AF/AE LOCK button to focus in manual. Unfortunately the AF/AE button has a relatively loud click in this camera so in quiet environments I touch the AF box in bottom right of the rear screen or move the square focusing brackets to where I want focus.. For colour popping video I use Natural colour profile with the addition of -2 shadow in Highlight Shadow on page 3/6 in the menu. Anyone interested who has a G80 or G9 should try this setting because the results are amazing. 🙂. Thanks for uploading a great video, keep them coming 👌

The g7 is small and lightweight with nice colors. If you can handle no IBIS, it’s a nice small kit.

I did a bunch of tests with the GX85 and G85 together, and the image output is identical (if you’re using the NATURAL profile, GX85 doesn’t have CINELIKE D)😊

Never used the G85, but I still use the GH5 for KZbin and client work. Totally agree with the power of a tiny setup. I rig out my camera for client work but go small for KZbin.

I agree with this video 100%. I built my portfolio off a camera that came out in 2018 and I still use it today. I'll show up to shoots sometimes and clients are shocked I don't have a bigger setup. I explain that I prioritize being lightweight and flexible. Working within constraints has helped me be more creative and I know the ins and outs of my camera like no other. I've shot with larger cinema cameras and rented out bigger setups for clients that specifically asked for it, but the tech in prosumer mirrorless cameras is just so good now. I shot a music video last month and as the DP I declined to shoot on the director's RED komodo and opted to rent an FX3 instead. It could fit in my backpack and was lightweight enough to fit on a gimbal for a few shots. It also had better lowlight performance than the RED for a few night scenes! Not to mention the workflow was so much faster - smaller file sizes etc... Of course there's a time and a place for larger cinema cameras, especially when you have a whole team around you to help operate it. But if you're solo operating and know what you're doing, a smaller camera can be a blessing.

AWESOME video!!! I owned a G85 for five years and I regret selling it. It's small, has inexpensive lenses, it's got fantastic 4k video quality, fantastic ibis for video, awesome battery life... I even took awesome landscape photos with it. Now I have a Sony A7c with the small 24mm G lens which fulfills my small camera wants EXCEPT for good video IBIS. I use Resolve's stabilization on most clips (which is really amazing btw), but I kinda miss the Lumix m4/3 system. You're inspiring me to pick up a newer one like the G9II which has PDAF and NO CROP for 60 or 120fps! Plus awesome gimbal-like IBIS for video.

I had to sell all my Lumix gear as I needed a FF camera for one project, but oh boy I do miss it a lot. I had GH3, GH4, GH5 and GH5 II. The 4:3 default aspect ratio for photos is amazing. And the best camera I used in the last years was definitely the GH5 II - this is the full package. GH6 sucked for photos because of lower DR, but GH5 II is amazing and for video it's just perfect.

Still have my G85 -- it's a great camera, mainly shot 1080p, mixing in footage and photos from my phone, and my other bridge super zooms cameras -- using Davinci for upscaling, mixing audio -- photography is all about what you do with all your gear and how you mix it all together, not about a single camera.

I think the best camera is the camera that you want to use, and have with you at interesting moments. For a lot of viewers, camera specs are important, but rarely I focus on the amount of mp or lowlight capability's when I see a picture.

Thank you for the beautiful story. I use GH3 and GH5s. And my favorite camera for photo walks is Olympus pl1 with an Industar 69, 28 2.8 lens. But with other small cameras like the GH5, Nigel, you talked about the particular importance of a good folashdie. Why is this so important, can you explain?

first off your channel is a inspiration for me to attempt to get better at video making. As a long time Bmx guy I really can tell the skate background you have which is probably why I enjoy your channel. but I did want to ask do you think the Leica 15mm 1.7 would be worth the little extra over this lease? i really love the mf3 and have been thrilled with the performance of my g95 as my first camera.

I started my video journey on a used G7. I fried the camera with a crappy power supply. Bought immediately another used G7 which I‘m still using despite owning a Gh5. Oftentimes a cheaper smaller camera is the right one for the job. At least for me…

G80 my primary video camera use my g9 as secondary video cameras g9 and gx9 as photo cameras dependening in situation keep the g80 set up for video for immediae use. as nedded . But sometimes the39m0min rwcording limit on the g80 is a bit of a pain compared with llimittlesss g85 also lack of auduo out to monitor sound... Otherwise portabilirmty and ease of use are high on my list of what i want in a hybrid camera some ibis too to be blr to hand held video if needed. Thanks for your video and rwmeminding us of the big picture newwrr and more mp cameras are not nevmcessarily "better", cheers! If I can only take one camera unless theeere is a specific use case (when it migt be the g9 instead) the g80 is it. I do not earn my living from photography or videography in which case things might be different! Amin g yhe cameraa and lenses)
