In this video we visit the remains of a Power station and a disused Railway goods shed. The power station is the former Hartshead Power station in Tameside, Ashton Under lyne, Manchester. We are just by the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. We visit the disused remains in the urbex video. The abandoned railway goods shed is on a former Victorian disused railway line. The disused railway line is the Micklehurst loop line. The goods shed is a wonderful example of Victorian railway architecture . We venture into some underground hidden tunnels that remain from the infrastructure of the coal loading area. Combined with some excellent aerial drone footage.

I agree. It's quality like this that puts the final nails in the politically-motivated BBC's coffin. The beeb is more interested is destroying and denying history rather than producing content that appreciates and sheds light on it, these days. This stuff is golden, and the production quality and tech is now on par with anything we'd get back in the day on the TV. Hats off to everyone doing this!

That goods building was amazing! It had a brick ceiling, and with that inspection pit it made me think they must have run the coal burning locos through it at one time. So in addition to being for the storage of goods, it was also for servicing of the yard locos. They would have brought in goods wagons (what we call box cars in the US) right inside to load or unload. What upsets me about seeing these videos you make, is how various companies walked away from their infrastructure without caring what impact the wreckage would have on the surrounding community. I've seen the same scenes here in America, the investors pocket their profits, the management find other employment and everyone just walks away. Now it's up to the taxpayers to clean up their mess and take care of the people who lost their jobs. Wether its a former railway station, a tunnel, or industrial site, it's just so sad that all that is left are ruins.

Something I discovered that I found very weird about this place, is after it’s abandonment (and demolition), for some reason, most of the remaining machines were apparently left behind, and actually quite a lot of possible functional parts (including those switch boxes before urban explorers used parts of it for souvenirs), and the hopper and conveyor still had ACTUAL conveyor and machines That is until Caseys took control

I saw that one (idk where it is but I saw it) and that tunnel goes far, and apparently the water and mud is really deep there. Believe it or not the entrance to the tunnel got recently opened up. It was just a tiny hole with some huge chunks of concrete covering it that you had to ease yourself under to get into, and now some absolute unit of a human has pulled up those bug chunks of concrete and exposed the entrance. It’s dead cool

Hey Mart, interesting vid. I have never seen a goods shed built like that, so much more substantial than anything I’ve seen before and it looked like it had an inspection pit for loco’s and what was with the cast supporting upright’s and heavy duty vaulted arched ceiling, you only put that in if there’s gonna be a lot of weight in a building, also the recessed floor to one side, and the pillars would suggest mounting’s for something. It would be worth doing a bit more digging into the history of that building and its uses as I think that they would have changed over time, to put it into some sort of perspective it would be like finding a church with railway lines running into it and saying oh look a goods shed. Great vid mate thanks alot👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

You need the windows to see what you're doing. Gas or oil lanterns are not as effective as modern electric lights! Similarly there was nothing like a fork lift truck. You had to bring the loaded wagon right in and use a crane to lift things out... there may well have been a steam crane built into the building.

My backyard!!! Lol....Firths Transport used the good shed in the late 70s early 80s and it was fully intact with a complete roof. Then they moved out and the vandals moved in and within weeks it was a wreck. It could have been a real community hub now its just a crumbling facade of a bygone era a real missed opportunity......Heyrod is actually pronounced Herod like the nasty King in the bible! I just remembered one of the girls I used to knock around with in my teens I'm pretty sure her dad was the safety officer at the power station until it closed.......

Nice video! Would you do me a favor next time? Make sure you have a line attached when climbing down old ladders into a pit. When a rod snaps (might be well possible after those years) you won't fell down. Just for safety. The old tunnels with the stinky mud might contain methane gas and/or hydrogensulfide; you can see little bubbles appear where you disturbed the water/mud. I'm not gonna ask you to bring all kind of breathing masks and oxygen equipment but you might buy a gas/CO/CO2/O2 detector next time you will enter an old tunnel.
@ChurchOfTheHolyMho

I too was wondering about H2S and methane potentially trapped in the stinky fossil fuel laden mud. I love the tunnel explores (in addition to most other content on this channel), but a multi-gas detector might be useful in these cases. Another great video and explore.

Wanted to also chime in that it would the worth investing in a combustible and oxygen combo sensor. If the tunnel stinks, the decades of leaves and other gunk in the mud may have created quite a bit of methane or H2S from decomposing. Also when you see the orange rust stains could mean that oxidizing metals have pulled all of the oxygen from the stagnant air. Plenty of people have died from those to factors in confined spaces. I love the cinematic quality exploring these forgotten pieces of a land I'll probably never visit. Its really awesome to see the craftsmanship put into utility structures.

great stuff, as always...the massive girder is a column, because it is verticle, and shall have a square section, because why wouldn't a column _ the load is uniform, down...girders are horizontal, or at an angle, and the greaater the load/unsupported length , the deeper the section , the heavier the weight per yard, -and the beam or girder will be greater in the vertical orientation than it is wide, cos that's the direction of the load...PS I just went back to check those girders/columns holding up the structure...they are indeed square in section, as you can see from the fact that they are either welded to circular base plates, with the same chord front and side across the circle, which ( weldind of that sort ) is somewhat unlikely for anything that old, so the whole lot - column and base must be a one piece casting of cast iron or steel, and mounted upon those square ribbed/ gusseted - iron foundation-footings (also cast in one piece) -probably with a pin and socket, nothing other is visible...that's solid Victorian over engineering in all its splendid magnificance

It was actually brick as it was used after the first construction of the power station, before the cooling towers. At that time the goods yard was tiny, and only had the single underground conveyor. It was gated off around 1940 along with the expanding of the railway sidings and the construction of cooling towers for the power station. Most of the original stuff around there from 1920-30 is mainly brick

Knew you'd like the place. Yes, just around the corner by the goods shed is the base to the crane that was there, and there was a little room you could go down into a bit. Also if you look closely at the pic showing the second coal conveyor, you can see a bit of a triangular roof sticking up out the top, that was the roof to the signal box for the railway line, a little behind the conveyor... nothing left really, a few scraps here and there to show that something was there, but you wouldn't notice unless you were looking for it like I was! Got a small souvenir from it😉 Btw, they're started their work on clearing the Hyde Road Railway Station site, went today to do some more digging to find my way in to the underground passenger subway ... failed again, but did uncover a very rusted air vent for it! All said, I'll be granted official access to the site this Wednesday.

It really does bring a tear to your eye What a testament that the place is still standing The Victorians really make you feel proud to be English , must have a been an exciting time to be alive during the industrial Revolution where life was rapidly changing

And a time with loong workdays, illness, no social security etc... No doubt it was a pleasant time if you were rich ! I also love victorian style and era, but I would only like to live in such a time if I belonged to the 1% richest :-)

Thanks for another great video Martin. Can’t help wondering who the person with the arrow was in the os photos. Little did he know that one day he would be in a short film documenting what that area looks like 68 years later.

Hiya Martin! Thanks for another fab film. I used to live in those houses about 100 yards from the coal conveyor over the canal! If you get chance, you might like my BBC Homeground vid from 1981 about the Stalybridge-Stockport railway & its history - it's got Brian Redhead and my dear old dad in it - great old footage! kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWWwnYewhdB1bsU

Just watched the 'Home ground' video....Fantastic! I found myself whistling the theme tune, so it must have been in my head somewhere. And Brain Redhead too! Great memories as I lived in Reddish for a few years before leaving Manchester (I know, it's Stockport really) in 1983. What a great thing to have of your dad chatting away. Thanks for this...
