It's changed a lot since then. Since Darwin, the definition of evolution has become : the change in allele frequency in a population over time. Back in Darwin's day, there wasn't any genomics, no alleles, no codons or genes... Chromosomes would only be discovered about 15ish years later. Still, the description was (I presume) supposed to be something sounding technical enough to be jargony and still comprehensible and quasi-relevant. All biology is, technically, evolutionary.

It was actually Wallace who wrote with this theory to Darwin whilst he was in Indonesia. His painting is next to Darwin's in the natural history museum. I'm very curious as to how anyone who calls themselves a scientist could possibly have arrived at that conclusion. They're talking about an alien. Yes, it's mentioned that it has 'human dna' in it (whatever that means). But we have different sedatives and dosages per kg for just the species here on earth. For all they know, they put the Predator into a coma or caused permanent damage. It's an *alien* . Any diagnosis they made would be educated guesses until they performed *many* tests beforehand. They know *nothing* about this creature. For all they know, it could be exhaling some novel xenovirus that, if it ever got loose, could result in untold millions of deaths. 'Sedating it' and setting it in the middle of a wide open room with lots of bystanders milling about, none of whom are even in environmental suits, is just courting disaster. It should really be inside of a sealed lab with access restricted to only personnel actively doing research and all observations done via camera. The lab itself should have Biosafety level 4 precautions, including some means of flooding the lab with superheated steam should there be a containment breach. Furthermore, taking a step back, all of this is just poor storytelling. If you want to establish a movie monster as being terrifying, making the protagonists too dumb to live works against that goal. Look at the book/movie _The Andromeda Strain_ The alien microorganism is terrifying because the story goes into great detail about all the precautions the facility studying it have taken, to the point where it almost seems like overkill, only for the microorganism to find a way past all of it.

He said: *"Unless we put medical freedom into the Constitution the time will come when medicine will organize itself into an undercover dictatorship. To restrict the art of healing to doctors and deny equal privileges to others will constitute the Bastille of medical science. All such laws are un-American and despotic.".* Now, after the year 2000, we are very much facing this reality, as we live in an era where our medical freedom is increasingly under attack, and "healing" has been replaced with "treating" ‘diseases’ with toxic chemicals and surgery. This drug-driven medical paradigm not only depends on the sacrifice and, some might say, torture, of animals in medical research, but also in many ways uses humans as sacrificial lambs. Remember the television series V back in 2009? The Visitors talk of universal health care (like Democrats and Obama). The whole push to get everybody insured was an emotional trick (get everyone into the doctor's office for a shot). Season 1, Episode 4 titled "It's Only the Beginning". The Visitors are using the flu vaccine to inject human beings with a biological "tag" so that they can be traced anywhere. The Visitors urge "Peace Ambassadors" to bring humans into "Healing Centers" for THE DAWN OF A NEW DAY. Dr Pierre Gilbert in 1995: "In the biological destruction there are the organized tempests on the magnetic fields. What will follow is a contamination of the bloodstreams of mankind, creating intentional infections. This will be enforced via laws that will make vaccination mandatory. And these vaccines will make possible to control people. The vaccines will have liquid crystals that will become hosted in the brain cells, which will become micro-receivers of electromagnetic fields where waves of very low frequencies will be sent. And through these low frequency waves people will be unable to think, you’ll be turned into a zombie. Don’t think of this as a hypothesis. This has been done. Think of Rwanda" Magnetogenetics: remote non-invasive magnetic activation of neuronal activity with a magnetoreceptor: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26740890/ Is magnetogenetics the new optogenetics?: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5470037/ Look up spions. Super paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. The technology exist they even tested magneto protein into rats to stimulate release of dopamine from an electro magnetic field. Dopamine is involved in the reward pathway and thus it influence behaviour. www.theguardian.com/science/neurophilosophy/2016/mar/24/magneto-remotely-controls-brain-and-behaviour First of all I say, there is no such thing as a pathogen when it comes to bacteria. Pathogen means disease causing. Bacteria never cause disease. Chemicals cause disease. The pharmaceutical industry, the chemical industry and the military industrial complex don’t want you to know that everything they produce causes cancer and disease. They call all the natural things pathogenic so you’re completely confused and stupid. Bacteria that clean up, they are janitors; they are just janitors. They eat decaying, dead and toxic tissue. Depending on how toxic the tissue is, the bacteria may not be able to eat it because it would kill them. In that case, your body creates virus which are not alive, they are just solvents that will dissolve that matter that is contaminated.

I also love how even if it was a normal DNA strand, the identifies it as human from looking at what's at most a dozen sequences; the human genome is fucking enormous, and it's not like you can tell human is human from a screen's worth of links. FFS, we have 11% DNA in common with bananas; would she think it was part banana if she was on that page? Besides, if the strand has 3 parts to it, it's not DNA because it wouldn't work chemically; it'd be some other molecule, and it goes without saying it wouldn't jive with something that has more than 2 parts per sequence. Even assuming you got a pregnancy from this, what you'd get is some kind of tumorous abomination, not something that looks like just one species. The movie just expects you to buy it because Olivia Munn said so, with an arrogant snarky tone after being completely dumbfounded by the discovery 10 minutes before. Munn's lucked her way through a career her entire life: first she was the cute girl on TechTV before it went defunct, then she became the geeky-but-still-hot girl in everything since.

In my opinion they all keep making the same huge mistake (besides horrible script writing, characters and dialogues) - they show WAY too much of the predator and they show it WAY too early in the film as well. Predator 2 wasn't loved by everybody but I felt it did a great job at revealing just a tiny bit more of the predators and their culture while leaving it mostly shrouded in mystery still by the end of the film, making you want more. And then comes all the rest of the sequels basically shoving the predator right up in the camera lense within 5 minutes like "LOOK AT THIS FAKE RUBBERY LOOKING MONSTER WE MADE OOGABOOGA!"

Something that intrigues me about this clip is that while this scene contains numerous illogical features (as pointed out by my esteemed fellow commenters), the people who made the film are nonetheless sufficiently technically competent that they were able to make the sets, operate the cameras, and so on. It's kind of the opposite of people who have great dreams but are unable to bring them into reality; instead we have a functional film crew who bring nonsense to life. Maybe it's to be explained by movie-making having become a business run by people who truly only care about money. If the film is going to sell, it must at least "look good" in some way, and so a certain level of quality is maintained on the technical side; but intangibles like plot, character, worldbuilding, who needs those? They just need people who can put words on a page and pictures in a storyboard, that vaguely make sense. So any old hack will do when it comes to scriptwriting. Or at least that's my theory.

you're totally right, and it continues to baffle me why Hollywood refuses to invest any real resources in story development planning interesting, nuanced characters instead of presenting audiences with different expressions of the same archetypes that have been typical of the Summer Blockbuster formula for close to two decades now. The 90s was the last great decade for consistent releasing of movies that told stories which touched the audience on a personal level while captivating them with realistic looking practical-effect visuals that didn't distract viewers from the story. Perhaps thats part of the reason why so many scifi films fall short in the writing department... CGI has a tendency to distracts people away from the story, modern films dropped the focus on storylines and instead giving the audience something tangible to think about, modern hollywood movies have opted to take the route of turning the audience passengers on a sort of visual rollercoaster (Marvel Superhero Movies in a nutshell). at the end of the day, studios are in business to make money. if a modern cgi action film takes half as long to produce as a 90s style action film, and makes more money because of the visuals( then the studio has no real incentive to develop the stories any further than necessary. the advent of CGI brought about a complete paradigm shift in the Hollywood filmmaking process. In decades past, writers and producers invested far more time hashing out details during the pre-production process than they actually devoted to shooting and editing the film itself. Massive teams of would scrutinize every possible aspect of a film's story development, character arcs before moving on to screenwriting and technical production aspects. Good storylines were the foundation upon which every noteworthy movie is built. But in these times where every major blockbuster film is heavily reliant on CGI, films are being produced backwards to the old way.. a basic story, held together by chicken with and duct tape, is drawn up and green lit by the studio , then teams of animators get to work on computer generated composites almost immediately. the visuals control the story now, whereas before the story would guide the visuals omakey soundstages for every new action movie

You defined what't rotten in the cinematography industry with pure perfection. It seems it's not art anymore, it's just financial investment. And while the public gradually loses more and more critical thinking, the film's stories increasingly get more and more out of touch with logic, because all it matters are the shining explotions and bright colours that reach the blank eyes of a numb, dull, engrossed zombified public.

As if good movies, whatever the criteria for that are, aren't made for profit... On the other hand, nobody sets out to make a bad movie. (Except maybe Asylum.) A good script doesn't guarantee a good film and a bad film might not be recognized as such before they start editing it together. At which point they would lose less if they just finished it instead of binning it right away. Also, a film crew is a machine with countless cogs. Only a select few of those have actual creative input on the production. Dissing on the whole crew of a bad movie for making a bad movie is the real nonsense.

Great comment! I've got a simple approach to sequels in general. If there is no big name actor attached to it then why should I bother? I think that 'Predators' should have been the 3rd movie then draw a line under the entire franchise.
