I was at this gig !!! They played on the "alternative" day. Bands played from early in the morning to past midnight. Chrissie and the boys came out and played with great energy, and sounded amazing!! luv'd it

This live act actually shows the The Pretenders' second line-up, with two new members in '83. The band re-grouped after the untimely drug-related deaths of original lead guitarist James Honeyman-Scott in '82, and bassist Peter Fardon less than a year later. "Message of Love" was recorded in '81 w those two, along with surviving members Martin Chambers (drums), and frontwoman Chrissie Hynde. It seemed the band was reaching the top of their game w this bad-ass hit, and it's a bummer to think what more good music coulda come out of the original line-up nucleus.

Chrissie Hynde is the business! No way my mom was letting my 14 or 15 teenage self go to the US Fest back in the day, but no matter - I knew every tune from Pretenders, II, Extended Play and Learning to Crawl like the back of my hand. "Message of Love" kick-ass tune 40+ years ago, and still is today!

The incredible Robbie McIntosh is on lead guitar here. A tremendous replacement for James Honeyman- Scott. The transition was seamless, thanks to Robbie's genius.

Would have been 16 at this time. If I lived in SoCal there is absolutely no way I would have been prevented from attending US Festival.

Remember Bono climbing the scaffolding over the stage? That was kind of freaking me out, I thought he was going to fall. One of the coolest (hottest) concerts I've ever been to.

7goldmdls I remember that it was the pretenders with the Kinks. At the end of the set it was the Pretenders and the Kinks on stage at the same time.

@@michaeldesilvio9980 The US festival was a 3 day concert, with about 12 bands each day. The Pretenders and U2 both played on the same day. It was a long time ago, easy to get them mixed up. Pretenders and the Kinks sounds great, who played first between those two?

I agree but I also think maybe the death of the two guys rejuvenated her. She's clearly the driving force behind it all. Her energy. Her charisma. she reminds me of Paul Weller.
