Would be nice if the gem stones were on the backplate, as the back is, realistically, the top of the card you see in your PC (unless you use a riser). Otherwise, love your review!

I think covering the backplate would have had cooling implications that you don't have with covering the fan shroud. Also where I have my gaming PC, I can see the fans but not the backplate when using the system. I'm not using a riser, the system is just higher up than me.

Compared to a $2400 4090 the 4080 starts to look better, however I don't think anyone should be paying $2400 for the 4090. Especially as you can tell there's a 4090 Ti coming at some point later in this generation.

Just a note: While the power requirements for the 4080 is 3 8-pin cables, so 1 cable less than the 4090, it means there are FEWER cables for the energy to split in case one of them malfunctions. Meaning that it will divide the 320w by 25% less cables. Resulting in almost the same situation.
@TastyPC2 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's entirely true, because the melting is happening within the connector on the GPU and not further back where the cable spits into standard 8-pin connectors. You now have 340W going through that connector, where as before you had 450W. So I would expect, even if using less pins in the connector, for it to have less heat in a small area to deal with.

Wow what a lovely review, you have such a chill voice and had a perfectly executed info roundup! I'm looking at this card in my custom build menu on box website (build from scratch) and you're so right about the pics not doing the card justice! But that price is really killing me at £1399. It's nice that the card is one of the highest clocked tho at 2640Mhz almost as fast as the strix oc for £300 less! I've been looking at this build page setup for 3 months now and I'm just thinking maybe it's best to just buy the system without the gpu and then wait for 7900 XTX. I really appreciate all the extra info and such a deep dive into all the nuances with generational performance as it confirmed for me that £600 over last year's £800 3080 in Nvidia's mind equates to 50% which is totally bonkers for 75% increase in price!! Big love from the UK 🇬🇧 🙌🏻❤️

My Palit 4080 is the quietest card I've ever used with no coil whine. However you could get the exact same model and yours could whine. I had to remove a middle case fan to fit it in 😂 Other than that, the card is amazing and a big boost from my previous 3080. Biggest improvement is definitely the cooling, and much lower temperatures when gaming. Does a 12900K really bottleneck a 4080, even at 4K? I very much doubt that considering it’s one of the best CPU’s you can get.

Great review! My personal opinion on the 40-series and 4k-gaming: I will stick to 1440p for a while. 4k is still really expensive and not really worth it right now in my opinion unless you're playing on a huge 4k-TV-screen. I'm sitting less than 1m in front of a 27'' Monitor. The difference between 1440p and 4k at that distance is almost unnoticable. And since I am mostly playing shooters, I need that high refresh rate. And to be honest, even a 4090 at max settings at 4k would not be stable enough. The 1% lows need to be higher than the max refresh rate of the monitor to be viable for competitive play.
@TastyPC2 жыл бұрын
It all comes down to the PPD (not to be confused with PPI). With my 28" 4K monitor at my normal viewing distance, the PPD is 67 which looks good to me. For me I stay clear of anything below 60 PPD because that's when the image starts to lack sharpness. Anything 65 and up becomes harder and harder to tell the difference between for me. If I swapped my monitor for a 1440p one of the same size, the PPD would be 45 which would look utterly potato, which is why I've always championed 4K gaming. For comparison the 800p display on the Steam Deck is 61 PPD for me and that doesn't look low res to me, or high res, it's right on the line between the two. So personally, I can't imagine having a like £4000 PC and the image being less crisp than the £400 Steam Deck, it would seem like a waste of money. But then I don't play competitive games, so I have different priorities. You can calculate your PPD here: qasimk.io/screen-ppd/ (You'll need a tape measure to work out your precise viewing distance) I think in the tech space, Apple (who I am no fan of), is the company that gets resolution right. It's taken a long time for the rest of the industry to follow their lead. They define Retina as 57 PPD and up, and all of their high end devices have Retina displays.

Quite amazing that on AC Valhalla at 1792p with ultra settings but clouds at v.high on my 4090 at 120hz which it reaches easily it only draws 220-250w which is very good, such a beast as it's not needing to run anywhere close to 100% gpu usage. My power bill will actually be a bit less than using my 3090 at 350w and I get more fps at a higher resolution. I would assume the 4080 would run at more watts in my setup as it's weaker.
