The 1986 film Pretty in Pink cast was made of the iconic “Brat Pack,” a group of teen actors known for starring in films like The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. The film was not only immensely popular at the time of its release, but is also still regarded as a cult classic. Pretty in Pink was produced by Paramount Pictures and released in the United States on February 28th, 1986.

The film earned $40.5 million during its theatrical run, placing it as the 22nd highest grossing film of the year. While many critics were tired of the plot, which focused on the drama surrounding cliques in high school, they still found the writing to be witty and sentimental. Furthermore, even the harshest of critics couldn’t deny that the stellar cast brought fresh life to the age-old plot.
Today, Pretty in Pink is still so popular that it was re-released by Paramount Pictures just in time for Valentine’s Day. While the fashion and lingo of the film may be cemented in the 1980s, even the younger generation of today can still see themselves in the film’s characters. While a lot of teenage drama has transitioned to technology, social castes and cliques remain very much the same.
The film was written and co-executive produced by John Hughes, who, by the mid 1980s, was already well known for his work on Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, among a variety of other films. Hughes had already established himself as the dominating force of high school and coming of age films in the industry. However, despite his close ties to the Brat Pack, he left the casting of Pretty in Pink up to director Howard Deutch.
Pretty in Pink was the first film that Howard Deutch would ever direct, and while he had plenty of misgivings going into this high pressure new career, the ultimate success of the film would greatly affect his career.
Despite an impressive filmography, Pretty in Pink still remains one of the crowning film achievements of his career, and it’s no wonder! This cult classic has garnered attention from audience members for decades, largely in part to its wonderful cast. But did you know that the cast for Pretty in Pink almost looked very different?
In today’s video, we’re going to take a look at how Howard Deutch almost cast some very different actors for the beloved characters we know today. Make sure you stick around, because we’re going to reveal which other actress nearly replaced Molly Ringwald as the film’s lead actress! We hope you like this video, and don’t forget to subscribe to Facts Verse for more!

4:39 If the test-screened ending change "destroyed Deutch's relationship with John Hughes" then why did they work together on 2 more films? Also, we've all heard the story about the revised ending, but I never knew about the casting conundrum with Cryer, Hall, Downey. Ringwald ended up in movies opposite all 3 eventually. If you wanted the other ending, just watch Some Kind of Wonderful. It's pretty much the same movie, but gender flipped, and with Hughes's intended ending.

As long as Ducky got a girl. Ducky and Molly’s characters were platonic friends. They both realized that and she ended up with the cute guy. Ducky ended up with a HOT girl. JMO. I never really looked at it differently after all these years. Loved the movie 👍🏻

The original ending would have had David Bowie's 'Heroes' playing as Andie and Duckie danced together on the dance floor at their prom. Very curious to watch it just to see what it could have been like. If Robert Downey Jr had played Duckie, I could have seen the original ending playing out as Jon Cryer and Molly Ringwald just seemed to have more 'friendship' chemistry in the movie. If RDJ played Duckie, I think he would have played the role with more romantic charm that I think would have translated to more 'romantic' chemistry with Molly Ringwald. But then again, I'm not sure if he would have played the part as eccentric as Jon Cryer did which made Duckie a very memorable movie character.

I think it's great the way it is. Love the way Ducky was such a gentleman in the end, and he still gets a girl.👍😃He was a great character. Loved Blaines character as being the quiet type. Molly being a dressmaker and her punked out girlfriend was a real fun bonus. I really liked that in their characters. But, Im almost ashamed of myself.... "Pretty in Pink" is kind of "Valley Girl 2.0" in reverse, where the boy comes from affluence and the girl is working-class. But "Valley Girl" [1982] is a much better movie and fleshes out the Class differentiation much better than does 'Pretty'. Valley Girl was wise to loosely base itself on Romeo & Juliet, whereas the romance in 'Pretty' feels contrived and shoe-horned in at the last minute. Valley Girl also boasts THE best 80s teen film soundtrack, not 'Pretty'.

No one could have been a better Ducky than Jon Cryer. Later in my teens finding out it was to end with Ducky getting the girl I could have seen that too. They should have filmed two endings. It really never bothered me that Blaine got the girl because he loved her too. In the end Ducky made out a little better with Kristy Swanson anyways lol Makes sense though about pissing John Hughes off though because he was a force to reckon with in Hollywood at the time. As much as I envied and adored and idolized Hughes I later found him to be kind of a dick. He never worked with Ringwald after her passing on the lead in Some kind of Wonderful. He had a crush he just couldn't let go of her. At the time I can see why she was so special to him but such a thing just wasn't meant to be. Such as life. Not a real John Hughes movie.

By this point in his career, John Hughes was a racist and an idiot. Molly Ringwald and John Deutch made the right decision with the ending that ended up in the movie. Putting Duckie in the friend zone is true-to-life.

@@chelseagirl278 John Hughes was sexist and racist. It's common knowledge that most of the writers (like John Hughes) that started at National Lampoon were Racist. His original script for Vacation is legendary in Hollywood. He sold it to National Lampoon twice, once as a short story for the Mad Magazine and then as a screenplay. National Lampoon basically had John Hughes write the screenplay then they fired him due his script being too racist. You can find his basic family vacation short story online. Harold Ramis was the director of Vacation and he had to rewrite about 60% of that script. But they still gave John Hughes a writing credit because it was based on his original short story.

@@chelseagirl278 Here's the thing about Trolls, No Proof will ever be enough, and No Evidence will ever Suffice. John Hughes was a racist. This is why his career as a writer and director ended. Talented writers like John Hughes just don't stop writing, no one would produce his movies. He tried to move over to television but no one would produce a show with his name attached. So he tried to produce a show on Broadway. And that's where he died, in New York.
