@ Japan has a functionally complete weapons ban for citizens in country. Katana must be made in the traditional methods to pretty much identical replica standards by licensed swordsmiths to be legal and in doing so are considered more to be art pieces than weapons. While shotguns are legal with an exceptionally oenerous process, rifles are wholly banned for the citizenry and all other firearms are effectively banned by not having an explicit legal method of licensing. Even airguns require licensing and restriction to either sporting or practical use (no hunting with target air guns, no target shooting with hunting airguns). It's pretty much total disarmament as far as the law goes but smuggled in handguns and even ar15s are fairly frequently used in organized crime in nation. Among the more typical criminals, knife homicides have some incredibly high numbers in country despite the ban on carry of long knives. They do make excellent knives however and their tuna cutters would stack up quite well vs any nation's traditional side swords or most sabers with the addition of some sort of guard imho.

I suppose the short of it is that the key part of his statement is the "imitation" word. Authenticated originals and licensed certified replicas produced in Japan are legal in Japan. They're as expensive as you'd expect though and I don't believe any of the big smithies produce European designs regularly since there just isn't the market for what would have to be priced as a custom job from an already expensive workshop. I shopped for swords with my cousin who collects in Kyoto but they all ended up being pricier than I really wanted to spend, especially when I added up the cost to properly ship them back. Most people buying swords are either collecting or want to have a nice one to display since they do Iaido.

It would be interesting to see a fight between traditional one handed swords and this one 🤔 to see how each one has to adapt
@grapfen587
@grapfen587 5 ай бұрын
@@edwinivcylian9883 It really wouldn't be interesting because there is no way to "adapt" to that much of a reach disadvantage. Unlike with a spear, you can't grab a greatsword (not just because it's sharp, that could be ignored with mail mittens, it's also impossible because it will always be in motion) to overcome the distance and you can't even block any of the incoming attacks, much less attack yourself. You "adapt" by praying to god your opponent makes a serious 1 in 10000 mistake and somehow ends up giving you an opening to close in...even then, the chances that you will be killed by an afterblow is immense because as stated, blocking is very ineffective with one hand and since you need to close that much of a distance to even strike the opponent, they will try to initiate an attack while you are closing the distance. Even if you end up actually hitting them before the attack goes through completely, momentum still carries the sword onward and the opponent also will not instantly go limp the second you impale them. They would either have to give the greatsword user a very significant handicap or record dozens of hours of footage only to have a handful of sucessfull hits for the one handed user...a handicap nullifies any realism, and the second option is just not worth the time and effort. If you are talking about one handed sword AND shield, then that changes things. Still very favorable for the greatsword user, but much higher chance for the one handed user to get a hit in and also actually survive the immediate aftermath.

Beautiful sword! I've been looking at getting a half-basket hand & a half. The examples frequently festure thumb rings, but I've been debating if i want one myself. Ive been hoping to retain the option to thumb the flat but it seems like a ring would thoroughly impede that.
Жыл бұрын
So I think from the moment on where a sword is too big for a thumb-grip (to perform twerhaue etc.) is such a thumb ring really useful, or a nice feature. Everything in the "long sword range" does not need something like this in my opinion. But with one-handed weapons it becomes interesting again. What kind of sword are you thinking of getting...something like a Swiss-Saber? :D

@ It'll pretty much be a replica of A485 in the Wallace Collection, but with a few personal tweaks and swaps from other swords in the family. One of those tweaks being the possible deletion of the thumb ring. I suspect there's enough handle to eek out some very pommely-gripped twers.

my fav sword is my hand & half i made first sword i made and still my fav (although i do liek my jian also) has 26cm handle 20cm ricasso 46cm bladed area, 6cms wide at base 5cm wide before tip taper 6cm long tip balanced about 10cm from hilt, has a symbbolic big head and arms made from a flat brass rod & a round brass rod. makes a nice club & you can also catch swords in the arms and direct stabs away from legs and guts if your blade is high and they stab low then i have a 26cm wide complex 'knife hilt' that i only saw a analog of today in german aroury, it has 4 upturned quilions that run 8cm up ricaso 1cm from blade at base 2cm at top that rise out of a widened portion of hilt 9cm by 6cm that works a lot liek a shel hilt to pretect hands so basically it has a 5th century AD blade with a 2nd century BC pommel and a 16th century hilt. lol although having made it as my first sword i find it hard to belive it took all the way to 16th century to make a hilt like mine because all i did was take a peice of steel 26cm long cut and hammer the ends to end in 45* angle then chisel cut 4 cuts into it and bent them up so even though they say its a complex hilt its 100x simpler than a basket and 10 simpler than even a shell guard

they cost more to make than a pike so with state run armys becoming a thing and less and less ppl providing their own gear most soldiers wouldnt of had a option to use them because governments always try to save costs and theirs like 8 pikes of steel and effort in a sword like that its like how you can armour almost your whole soldier if you look at modern norwegian ext troops, but if you look at most of the armys actually fighting they only armour the chest and head because its a lot cheaper you can armour up like 4 guys for the cost of 1 fully armoured guy and the armour should reduce casualty's 50% still so you endup with 2x as many soldiers for same price

Almost 4 kilograms. That short workout had to make you breath for a while. Front heavy 3 kg pole axes may generate a heavier punch but this seems more useful once the cavalryman is on the ground and go through guards of light swords. The sound of the swing in the end was like a .50 cal bullet. It makes you hide or run. The past was the worst. Scary

The title leads me to believe it is a 16 cent greatsword(in price). I like having more videos on battleswords, 70 % of great swords or battleswords videos on youtube are spanish great sword videos, there are also only 1 to 2 videos of greatsword sparring with meddling quality due to the weight of the sword amplifying blunt force in sparring and make it harder to do intense sparring with proper safety measures in place. If such a sparring were to occur, I am pretty sure both sides of the spar would need heavy padding in addition to the usual leather jacket and blows to the head still needed to be avoided.

How much " knock back " power does this sword produce? What I mean is when you strike multiple enemies that are ready for incoming strike and block. But enemy would be blocking with basic weapons of that time period, one handed sword, maby a poleaxe/pike or rear case a sheild. Lets say you had five targets in close formation that try to block. Would be very interesting to see how much force the sword release and how it would breakthrough a strong defense. Like you said " machine gun " of its time. My wild guess would be it would push them back and break their formation. Even worse. This make it very interesting, on the battlefield the 2h-Swordman would have basic infantry behind him ( not to close or they also get hit) with pike/polearms that would be ready to pick those guys of as soon as he break their formation. Falling down on the ground would be easy target for a pikeman. 👍

i know from personal reinacting experience if someone blocks a heavy sword(mines not that heavy only 2020grams) and i DONT pull blow completely ill ruin thier edge even on a blunt reenactment sword(2mm edge) and you can splinter a spear shaft almost as easily even though its blunt and my sword is only 94cm pomel to tip ( i once split house mates skull open acidentaly while we were drunk sparing by simply steping forwards while doing a over head chop, he blocked it with classic longsword overhead block(griping near point with offhand) and i stepped forward and it was like he hadnt blocked at all it just sailed strait through without resistance & into his head before i could pull it (46cm blade 20cm ricaso 26cm handle 6cm base-5cm wide before tip taper 3mm-2mm thick blade [minimal taper]) if you attacked 5 ppl blocking with that battle sworrd unless they all stopped you at same time youd cut through the first blockers block and into person behind it if they just had pikes or 1 handed swords unless they caught it right on base of blade/hilt the leverage is just to much for wrist and that thing could cut clean through 2 or 3 pikes on a full swing. i would say though i never attack pikes from front unless its a lone pike you dont have a shield and you cant parry 5 differnt places at once so i roam past the shield wall and come in from behind ( i do mostly 300bc-1200ad era stuff) ill often have a few javalins or something i throw before going into spears, if anyone tries tp break off to 1 on 1 me well i have javalins & a 1 or 2 handed sword so i can either go 2 handed go javalin in offhand sword mainhand or i can toss sword in offhand and throw javalin just depends what they are armed with. but yeah never try to attack pikes head on, thats why they used them you cant get through all the tips(well not without breaking eeryones gear) but at same time pikes are useles to defend you up close so if you can get around the pikes you inflict absolute carnage ill 'kill' like 5 ppl in 3 seconds and their only defence is to drop pike because its to long and pull a knife or whatever the have as secondary wep and that is how 1 man totally ruins a pike formation or a shield wall:P ofc otehr times 3 spears wheel before you get close enough and poke u to 'death ' as you parry 1 grab another and cop their one in chest :P

Oh these were indeed used back in the day for actual combat. While you may find more writen sources about the use of the iberian montante (mainly Godinho and Figueiredo), there are other texts being referenced into the article that Bjorn wrote about this very topic. Generally, german battleswords were used alongside halberds to cover pike squares and montantes were deployed even in narrow spaces like galley underdecks in the Mediterranean.

They were used sometimes even in great numbers, there numerous sources and advices on how to use them in german textes. There are even lists and inventories that show how many were used for specific skirmishes or battles. The Artikel of the Fußknechte states that 50 men should be armed with Schlachtschwerter or other good polearms. Seems like they were considered to be the very best. there are also techniques on how to deal in narrow halllways and other things. The problems are same for many other polearms which could be even disarmed by grabbing them.

This particularly sword is rather heavy, but the weight of evidence indicates that somewhat lighter large two-handed swords like the Iberian montante were excellent options for out in the open. Such lighter greatswords & lighter spiked staves or spears seem to have been the preferred option for facing multiple opponents with melee weapons.

@@b.h.abbott-motley2427 Compared to the average weight of Schlachtschwerter this sword seems to be pretty light. There are swords that weight as much as 4-5 kg that were used in battle. I think that the iberian textes are somewhat misinterpreted regarding their context and their intention.

@@superrobotmonkeyhyperteamf3194 There's a Spanish montante dated to 1550-1600 in the Cleaveland Museum of Art that's 2.24kg at 167.3cm. It's significantly lighter than the sword feature in this video. We don't know for sure how heavy the montantes used by Iberian masters were, but lots of surviving two-handed staff weapons occupy the 2-2.7kg range. 3.8kg or 4-5kg is rather heavy compared to the lighter extant two-handed swords & to two-handed melee weapons in general.

@ If I use long, foreign-sounding words my brain must be big :^) It's kind of ironic though that, as far as I can tell, these very large swords were actually referred to as "two-handed swords" in English - so modern English speakers who insist on "zweihander" are seemingly taking medieval/renaissance English terms that aren't helpful to modern ears, and just translating them to German to make them...bearable or something lol

Fucking christ I wish those trousers were the norm in modern society. Such a pain bending and squatting non-hands when it drags somewhere.

Some cutting or impact testing would be nice, it's all pretty swinging it around, but chopping a man to pieces, presents..... complications. Anyone can twirl around a stick, the real art is making sushi from human meat.

most of reinactors i spar with weigh 20+ kg more than me im a very lanky 6'1 only 60kgs, they claim they cant hold my bastard sword 1 handed, but it actualy moves very easy in 1 hand if you hold it right and have a little wrist strength, i do wield it like a extremely short greatsword 1 handed though all circles and most ppl try to hold use it like a gladius for some reason when they pick it up

I don't know what's your height but you made that beast look like ~160cm instead of 181cm.
