@@James-ep2bx If a slave were to look at you and say: "But I like my simple life. I get up, I do the thing, I eat. I go to sleep." Would you simply agree to disagree with them that slavery was acceptable - as their owners expand their holdings and threaten new populations? The humans, in this case, are not rejecting reality. They are rejecting the relevance of subjectivity. These aliens are deluding themselves and evading reality when it is uncomfortable, rather than addressing the underlying truth. As evidence or symbolic of this, despite these two being friends, the alien cannot stand the sight of his friend. The very notion that the alien is capable of negotiating its own position is void. One could, for example, simply have their augmented reality display something comforting to them and do anything otherwise. How would they even know if what they were seeing was real or just the programming of the augmented reality? The vision the alien sees is not under its own control. It is something selected for it based upon programming outside of its control. How can its views be treated as equal to one whose vision cannot be tampered with? We see this in the bar scene where the disabling of AR makes people incapable of so much as challenging a simple burglar. Had they the ability to stand up and challenge someone blatantly wronging them in spite of having their AR disabled - they would have a right to argue they were not going down the same path and the humans could agree to merely teaching the way of true sight. However, all of them hid their heads in the sand despite knowing that they were being wronged, because the mere sight of reality was too uncomfortable and disorientating for them. You can even see how seriously the humans take this - with the fear being that their own perception is being subtly altered from birth in order to manipulate them. Even the tiniest deviation from reality, properly inserted, is able to change the behavior of people. So, I see what you are saying in the idea that "humans can't accept the reality that someone else disagrees with them" - but that isn't exactly reality. Those aliens are held hostage by their own inability to directly deal with reality and will not challenge reality. Their own perception that they are not going down the same path is a necessary defense of the dependency.

@@James-ep2bx Slavery denigrates society as a whole. It's not the inhumanity inflicted upon the slaves themselves that is truly destructive, but rather the normalization of a means of production that thrives not on innovation or progress, but on expansion and suffering. An operation depending on slaves will always enrich the masters, but because of this there will be little impetus for them to improve their operation's efficiency. If the masters want more profit, they merely need to buy more slaves and material. Progress is therefor hampered, while the institution of slavery ever increases. In this way, slavery is much more akin to an addictive drug. The more one takes, the more one needs, until eventually they are completely dependent. Once there, it's nearly impossible for one to escape that dependency themselves. Either they continue until their life collapses, or someone intervenes forcefully. AR in this story, is such a drug. Society as a whole is already dependent on it. It's conveniences already replace the personal growth of individuals. In truth, the humans don't know exactly what form the future collapse will take or even when it will happen, but they do know that that collapse is coming. Technology WILL progress. New features WILL be created, and some of those WILL replace more of these xeno's ever shrinking reality. The humans in this story are effectively preparing to drag the aliens to rehab.

The human has great qualities too, but in THIS story, the main advantage they have is learning from their mistakes on a social and diplomatic level. No physically militant fantasies (other than the advantage from hard work and getting over the xenophobic response), and instead careful diplomacy and a firm grasp of history. It's fantastic. I listened and kept listening, all I heard is pointless bickering and people of importance to keeping their homes functioning keep on insisting winning internet brownie points with virtuous speeches, and lofty ideals that realistically wouldn't work. I drove myself to listening to politics because I was starting to feel as if the world was turning for the worse. Only to find out that it was mostly done by people in said politics who are busy with disagreeing with anything and anyone that opposed their ideals. This story made me realize. That I can't raise my voice of fears about my safety or my family's safety, when no one is willing to lend an ear for it much less do anything about it. It even goes down to the normal people lifting their fingers only to plug their ears of the suffering around them. Whether it be man or child, the dying trees, and even overworked machines. This is truly the darkest timeline we live on.

It is, literally, arguing to maintain the status quo. Literally arguing to to keep on arguing, stretching discussions ad infinitum, all just to keep the sacred cow that is status quo.
@Aim54Delta3 жыл бұрын
The status quo is not the sacred cow. The sacred cow is the promised neverland. The way to power is never to argue that things are fine as they are. The way to power is to insist that people must follow you and/or your ideas in order to meet with success. Consider that we are only a few generations out of the proverbial jungle. As we swept across the Earth, almost all of our existence was tribal - when the tribe grew too large, it split and headed off in different directions - and, generally, those tribes survived well enough. Civilization is a relatively modern thing. Fishing, agriculture, trade and commerce - these things evolved out of the meeting of greater tribes and their mutual points of traffic. Tribal councils soon began to grow beyond even the size of what tribes could normally sustain in a sort of proto-parliament and kings rose to the fore as tribal heads of the tribal leads - and thus the first city-states came into being. As we have grown since, there are new challenges. We can't simply split the tribe as we used to. There is a real need to think in terms of governance and civil structure. However, people are not wired to think about whether or not the structure of society is correct and needs to be left alone. They are wired to try and lead the whole tribe down their path, to drum up support and to use every means to conspire. Consider, you have two people running for office. One says everything is fine and they are running to chair the position responsibly and be your representative. The other one says the world is about to go to hell in a handbasket and they are going to fight to stop it if they get elected. Which one is more likely to motivate support? Even if they are a complete loon and the thing they see as impending doom is not real, just popularly believed to be real... It works. Then they get in and begin trying to change things, using and abusing their position because they are not thinking about how a civilization ought to be governed, but are thinking about how to get their way. And the way they do that is through fear and/or promises of better/easier life. But if they ever solve the problem, then they become politically irrelevant. As such, many problems are too politically convenient to allow them to go away. It's not the darkest timeline, but it is especially chaotic at the moment. If I had anything to say, it is to remember to think more about how a civilization ought to be governed and to be careful of who is trying to lead you (and others) where. Chaos is opportunity for many.

I’m sure you know the expression “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” I found a way to apply it to verbal debate. Roughly speaking it’s “Remain civil, and make sure you think your opinions through.” Having the ability to explain why you think what you think is an incredibly effective way to communicate. Because when you walk someone through your logic, one of two things can happen. Either they agree, or they point out something that you missed. The remaining civil part is because allowing an argument to devolve into bickering is unproductive to the pursuit of truth. Obviously this only works if both parties are engaged in the discussion in good faith, but that applies regardless IMO.

Yeah, I don't mind and actually like being challenged on my viewpoints - they likely won't sway me, and I have no compulsion to convince anyone I'm right either, but it's possible they may present a view I hadn't considered, and can use as another lense for interpretation. What does drive me nuts, is when those claiming only their view or method is correct, can't explain or elaborate in a coherent fashion. Simply stating "no you're wrong!" is more the domain of thought for a young child, not an adult. Or that you quickly learn they are simply parroting back ill conceived and biased arguments from their own echo chamber, and lack the historical/social/economic understanding of being able to articulate their point of view.

I say this from the standpoint of a consumer in support of the tech. We do have this today. It can only get better. But people need to learn they can’t simply quit one reality for the other. It doesn’t work like that even if you want it to. I use VR on Streams and to combat depression, and social anxiety issues. That kind of shortcut is so human it's scary, and we didn't come up with it. Yes we have those issues, and they can be very deep seated, but we also have been doing everything we can to overcome them when they are exposed and we are made aware of them. We know what those feelings can make us do, and we don't like it. So we force ourselves to face them and deal with the issue, instead of papering it over and pretending it isn't there. We are too good at that as is, we don't need the added aid of an AR rig or similar. There is also the issue of not seeing reality for what it is, and I shudder at how badly that can screw over everything, but I digress.

A thing I've noticed with people by and large is that they often can agree on what most root issues are, it is just the means to deal with them that they tend to differ on. Like me for instance. I detest institutional racism, but my critique on the last decade or so is that we are giving institutional racism a pass in favor for tackling casual racism. And that comes to the other part of human behavior that tends to stoke the flames of disagreement. We like to fixate on what is the most easy to change, rather than what is the most needed to change. And we do this to the point where I wager that 90% of the people reading this who are on the left could not recount 10 specific examples of institutional racism, or institutional inequity as I rather think about it in those terms. Don't google it, Brainstorm for a few minutes and then let a comment on what you could think off on the top of your head.

The only solace I gain from a story like this one is that it is less likely than ever to actually come to pass to Humanity. More and more people are rejecting or limiting their exposure to technology and are starting to really develop healthy boundaries for it which, given time to develop, should greatly aid in preventing an AR driven catastrophe, or possibly even prevent AR from becoming a significant thing at all. People like me, who are raising their kids with very limited technological exposure and NO Social Media exposure for the entirety of their teen years, as much as we are physically capable of doing, anyway. My own minor children are not permitted to own or really even use a smartphone other than as a phone for short periods to talk with their grandparents. Even then, it is overseen by us and returned to our possession once the call is over. Computer time is limited and monitored and social media use is strictly forbidden until they are 18. Essentially, we treat this technology the same way we treat alcohol. Something NOT for kids. This may seem extreme, and indeed some may call me a luddite. But those people are the same stupid ones who would embrace an AR driven apocalypse, so their opinions simply don't matter to me at all. Keep your kids as technology free as possible. Send them outside to touch some grass and get a little dirty and also get out there yourselves. Stay free.

This feels less like an HFY story and more a commentary on current day trends.

A very good story and thought provoking too. We are definitely at the beginning of that horror story to be sure. I'm just glad we don't have that level of technology yet. Hahaha,... I can't believe I feel that way about technology.

If you were unaware, google filters out search results based on your previous habits. Have someone you barely know perform the same search for something (using the exact same words) and they may end up with very different results. Most effective when performed from different internet connections and machines (the less shared identifying info the better).

Thus proving that a lie, even when most fervorantly believed, does you no good when the truth smacks you in the face. One might even discount the blow, or pretend it was from another source, but the mark will still be there.

An open ear and an open hand can do as much as a closed fist, and are often needed more often.
