It would be great if you provided some sort of explanation as for why these maqam start on the note in which they start. Still great educational video as always.

I'm so grateful for your videos Navid. I am new to oud and I am having trouble with the half flats -- to my ear, they sound out of tune. Any tips or pointers on getting the positioning right on the left hand? I am using an electric tuner from time to time to play scales to ensure I'm landing in the right spot but the half flat is still a challenge.

Train your ears and find the notes. listen to the music you are passionate about and learn how to play it by ear. The half flats are challenging at first, play them in the context of the maqam to hear them musically and not out of tune.

if they sound out of tune you're doing fine then, Just check with the tuner it's somewhere in between. Not even the greatest player of all time can consistently land in the exact same microtone all the time. Like not even ottoman classical musicians who actually use 1/8 (koma) instead of 1/4 tones. As long as you land just before the note in the tuner forming something like a 45° angle with the needle it's fine. As long as you're not just playing the usual half notes instead of the quarter flat and keep practicing you'll get used to their sound and you'll no longer perceive it as "out of tune".

Hello Navid, Thank you for everything you do, you're a great source of information for oud learners. I would like to have your opinion on Miras and Yildirim. You own a oud from Yilidirim and another one from Miras. What can you tell me on the sound differences between the two? And how do they compare to Iranian ouds from Said MOHAMMEDI or Hossein KARIMIAN? Thank you.
