Just to answer your question as to why Moses was put in the river by his mother, at the time to reduce the number of Israelites so that they could not rebel against the Egyptians, the Pharaoh ordered all the Jewish newborns to be drowned in the Nile.

When they were making this video, they approached leaders from Christianity, Judaism and Islam to ensure that they were telling the story correctly and non-offensively. I think that's part of what makes this movie so good. There was a level of care that many other movies don't show to the source material (including the numerous other live-action movies that tell this story). The team so clearly wanted to do this story well and respectfully, and that also means that atheists like myself can enjoy it without feeling like a religious narrative is being pushed.

Because pushing a religious narrative is NEVER the goal. The goal is putting biblical stories out there so people can learn them, understand them and make up their own minds and decide to get interested in God by their own will AND the Prince of Egypt did this greatly. As a child this was my first “encounter” per say with God and I remember feeling something special.

Fun Fact: In the burning bush scene, the voice of God is made up of the voices of all of the main characters whispering the lines simultaneously. But when it came time for Val Kilmer (voice of Moses) to record his part, they figured they needed a voice to be louder than the others, so they used Val as the “main” voice of God and to add the dynamic of God being like Moses’ “inner voice”. So Moses is basically talking to himself.

God is essentially our conciousness. We are all from source regardless of what you believe in but it just goes to show in times of great turmoil we manage to find the way or that we are capable of anything when we realize that no matter what the Universe has our back. Even when it doesn't seem like it. Those are the times of great lessons and we can give that knowledge to those who are ready to help them grow too!

That actually probably helps the folks who are not religious, or at least a follower of an Abrahamic religion, latch onto it. I know of several atheists who love this movie, because, yes at it's core, this is a story from scripture, it's so easily accessible because the focus is not religion, but the drama of a family falling apart

that's what made this movie great, it's not a religious film, it's themes and plot isn't focused on whether Moses or the hebrews believed in god, even Ramses didn't deny the christian god's existence if my memory serves right. it's themes are about family, legacy, brotherhood, and a few other things that may have escaped my mind. that is one of the things that made the movie great, it's not out to give you a sermon on why you should believe in god or why going against god is bad. It's out to bring a good story.

@@_the_little_mermaid_ I think you misunderstood what I said, there is a difference between a movie with god in it, and a movie about religion. The Story is primarily about Moses and Ramses, not God. Sure God is in the story but only as a secondary character to the two brothers. I think it's actually you who needs to watch it again. The primary conflict in the story isn't religion, otherwise, Moses should have converted everyone in Egypt instead of getting the hebrews out of it. Ramses isn't against Moses because he hates god, or the hebrews. He fights Moses because of his desire to not destroy his family's legacy, something his Father scolded him for earlier in the film. and Moses ran away from egypt not because he found god, but instead because he found out the terrible legacy his stepfather actually had, commiting minor genocide against the hebrews and enslaving them. God is simply the Catalyst that pushes Moses towards conflict with Ramses, asking Moses to set the Hebrews free, yep, you heard me right, God didn't want to get the egyptians to believe in him, he just wanted the people who did, the hebrews, out of there. and Lastly, I think you're projecting on me. I think you assumed that I'm atheist, but that is far from the truth, I'm actually Agnostic like you, so unless you mean Agnostics are the ones trying to reject God and taking him out of everything. then you're wrong there bud. But you are right at the end, I do like this Film inspired by an Old testament story, and I believe it's really underrated, but denying God's part in it? nah, that's something I haven't done.

But God gave Rameses a chance each time to make the Right choice. ‘Let My People Go”. But Rameses thought himself mightier than God, And only responded to each Wonder with increased Cruelty toward the Hebrews. And when the time for the Tenth and Final Wonder, God told Moses that the last Wonder would be brought upon Egypt by Rameses’ own mouth. ‘I am Pharaoh, I command power over life and death.. I will kill every last Hebrew Firstborn.” But only God gives the gift of life, and only God has the Right to reclaim that Life. It wasn’t out of cruelty or malice or vengeance, but to show Rameses what his cruelty had been done to generations of Slaves. But even then God have all of Egypt a chance to be Spared, even Rameses’ own son.. Had he but listened to Moses’ warning. Some Hebrews still doubted God, while some Egyptians heeded the warning; and were spared. Rameses could have led his city and in People in prosperity, had he just Let God’s People Go.. But in the end, he lost his City, His Son, his Army, and all he held dear.. Because he just couldn’t… Let It Go.

Honestly, I've never been much for religion. This movie though, always managed to bring a tear to my eyes, even as a child... mostly because the depiction of the supportive brotherhood between them, and how it all unfolds later on, struck me as a real "personal/emotional" tragedy. 17:28 While I don't know if this happened in the Bible, this part when Moses finally breaks down and cries by himself after the death of Rameses's son (who is in a way Moses's nephew), when he’s finally broken after trying to be so strong while fulfilling his work for God and after seeing so much destruction and death of a people he once loved. He's a man who was given a task, which he is clearly struggling to accomplish. Moses crying could almost be seen as him pleading with God, "Why are you making me do this? Why are you killing these children? They've done nothing. Why kill their children just as Seti killed yours?"

You know what the ironic thing about Moses and Ramses' conflict is. Moses wasn't there to attack the egyptians, he was there to extend an olive branch. God was going to mess them up anyways, Moses was there way out, he was just the messenger but ended up bearing the blame for the plagues in the eyes of the egyptians and Ramses. That link "You were always getting me into trouble...but you were also always there to get me out of trouble" encompasses it perfectly. Moses was Ramses' way out of being the so called "weakest link"

@@valerievention look, it’s okay for you to like the movie but honestly the problem comes when non-believers come and try to make it seem like this movie isn’t about God which it literally is! People come and say “no, it’s a story about brotherhood and family and blah blah” but no mention of God whatsoever. Apparently non-believers can’t accept when they like a biblical movie so they try to bring up excuses as to why they like certain movies. Another example is the Chronicles of Narnia. I still respect all religions, and I've been able to familiarize myself with many different ones because they fascinate me. It's a common misconception that the Jews are claimed to have built the Egyptian pyramids, but this was never claimed by them nor is it present in the Bible. I guess people just associated one with the other given that the pyrmaids are definitely that country's most famous architecture. (Also, the people who *did* build the pyramids were actually treated relatively well.)

The Hebrews feared Moses when he killed the Egyptian because they did not know that he was also a Hebrew. They must have thought that if he was capable of killing one of their own "for no reason", what would he not do with them. Miriam was amazed, but was not afraid of him.

This is my favorite Dreamworks movie. as someone who grew up in a religious household, and uncertainty in if I want to believe in anything, I adore this movie. I was in a film critique class about 2 years ago, we had watched Nosferatu, China Town, White Dog, Hannibal, Phantom of the Opera, etc. But this movie, everyone agreed was THE best movie we watched in there. It follows the story of Moses wonderfully (and while it puts a heavier emphasis on Moses when Aron was Moses's voice in the Bible it's still really good!), the artstyle is distinct and will last the sands of time, and it ADDS to the story! it focuses on the fact that Rameses and Moses were BROTHERS! raised in the same house, Moses KNEW the traditions the Egyptians had, their hundreds of gods, and knew that they wouldn't listen to him. Rameses has an inferiority complex regarding his place, he refuses to be the weak link that would destroy his legacy, his monuments are even bigger than that of his father's. and furthermore, think of this from Rameses perspective, his brother who he thought was lost or long dead returns. then he tells you that the singular god your slaves worship tell you, Pharaoh, "The evening and morning star, one who houses Ra or Horus within his own body, and thus makes HIMSELF divinity" That THEIR God orders you, to let his people go. I really love the contrast between the scene where they race and the one where Moses kills the guard. In the first one they are racing by the slaves not paying any attention to them, totally bling to it. And in the other one its like Moses just put on glasses and can finally see the slaves probably and what is happening to them

I love all the attention to detail in the 10th plague part of the movie For example, Ramses says that there will be a great cry from all of Egypt, and at the end of the 10th plague you can hear all the people of egypt crying.

19:05 he didn't actually survived. The part where he screams for Moses is how Moses chooses to think of ramses to not think that he's dead. Also fun fact: Moses wasn't actually the one doing the talking, Aaron was, Moses was a stutter. Also also, Aaron was actually pretty supportive and on board with Moses from the getgo. This is a FANTASTIC movie and your reaction made it even better.

Yeah the only thing I didn’t like about the movie is that they made Aaron such a doubting jerk. When I’m reality he was a supportive faithful person. Would have been cool to give Moses a stutter in this movie. I feel if it was made in todays world. It would more likely be the case. The movies are doing heaps better at including people from all different walks of life now days. Having someone with a stutter watch a movie about a guy who did such amazing things with God on tv would be a big inspiration!

Also can we recognise how amazing the casting of Steve Martin and Martin Short as the priests. Also, they hired a singer for Sandra Bullock (miriam) but Michelle Pfeiffer stood her ground and asked to sing her part (zipporah) herself and she killed it singing when you believe!

The scene with the burning bush was the scene that made me realize I was watching something genuinely special. When comparing it to older adaptations, where the bush is depicted as a hostile red fire, with a thundering, commanding voice the whole way through, instead we're presented with a gentle, white flame that will not harm you. A voice that soothes and comforts, but becomes firm when necessary, only to apologize through returning to that gentle tone and using the harmless flame to basically embrace Moses... it's my favorite version. Seeing that white 'flame' again when the final punishment comes for the first born, and seeing that essentially, Moses was touching and seeing the spirit of God, a gentle being who also means its word, was also incredible. I also like that the deaths of the children, unlike what the Egyptians did to the Hebrews, was gentle. The children did no wrong but be born to the families who supported the man enslaving His people, so there's no need for them to suffer. They never knew what hit them. It's all such great imagery and I practically burned out the VHS as a wee one.

I'm so happy this film is resurfacing, being reviewed and getting all the praise it deserves. My favorite parts of the movie have to be every scene with just Moses and Rameses, they knew how to be each other's support in every way that counted until certain beliefs and forces separated them. This will always be my favorite animated musical.

Love it 🤍 If they adapted anything else from the Bible, I think it could’ve been: (1) Making it clear how bad that blood stunk and that it destroyed their food and water supply for some time. (2) God/Moses’ snake eating up the high priest’s snake was stunning and intimidated to the palace court, but they didn’t emphasize it here.

This movie set a high standard for DreamWorks, it was their 2nd major release but the 1st movie of theirs to go into production. Moses is voiced by Val Kilmer, Rameses is voiced by Ralph Fiennes, Seti (their father) is voiced by Patrick Stewart. Objectively it's their best film but I wanna know, since this was your first time seeing the movie, were u in any way surprised by the fact that this movie came from DreamWorks? I ask that because this movie is a far cry from what the studio eventually became, with Shrek, Shark Tale, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, Over the Hedge, How To Train Your Dragon and such. I love most of those films but I miss their hand-drawn films too

@@ladyvenusdragon If I'm not mistaken I think it can be seen as a prequel because it happens before Moses' time, and in it, Joseph's coming to Egypt allows the Hebrews to come settle there as well. Over time things change however and we see the consequences of it in The Prince Of Egypt.
