I wouldn't say Frollo "fell for" her. that implies some level of affection or a crush. He lusted for her and became obsessed. Lust is a sin, he was strongly religious so he blamed the sin within him on her. The only way that sin would be purified and him forgiven would be if she became his truly or if he eradicated the "witch" causing him to sin. His motivation was literally him trying to appease God. It's why he's one of the worst disney villains in my book. People like him have and still do, exist.

@@tschaytschay4555 The Dutch singing voices of many evil characters were done by an opera singer, so the villain songs tend to be very good in Dutch as well. There is one lady who is pretty famous for writing tv-shows, music and comedy, who does the translations, and she's very good as well, so I often prefer the Dutch version over the English version. 😁

The disney movie came first is loosely based on the book (by Victor Hugo, the guy who wrote Les Miserables) with some elements changed because it's still a movie for kids. The stage musical is more accurately based on the book, BUT it has music from the disney movie with some additional songs and lyric changes. Yes, that is Patrick's voice actor.

Even a movie for kid friendly they couldn't hold back on some of the sexual content . a part of me wonders if this was meant to be like fantasia where it was geared towards a mature audience and Disney said "nah". Either way I love the musical for sticking to the book's original criticism of the corruption of the church.

i am actually pretty happy that quasimodo and esmeralda didn't end up together. quasi is quite literally the nice guy, in its actual literal meaning. he loves esmeralda and does everything for her, but instead of resenting her for not returning his feelings and feeling entitled to her love, he accepts that she loves phoebus and is clearly happy for them at the end, which was probably made easier because he actually befriends phoebus who is literally a knight in shining armor. quasi accepting esmeralda's "rejection" (he never actually made his romantic love for her known to her so she didn't even outright reject him) provides a model, especially for young boys, on how to go deal with romantic rejection in a healthy way. since quasi clearly loves esmeralda, he's able to be happy for her happiness instead of letting his jealousy consume him and make him bitter and spiteful, which is an all too common trope in media. also, side note, i love that you acknowledge phoebus as the truly great guy that he is. all that he does for the entire movie is just helping people out left and right. his and quasi's friendship is very cute too, i can see them going off on all sorts of adventures together and generally being best buds

I once heard a reviewer state that this movie is one of the few movies (Disney canon and otherwise) that validates the "friend zone". I think that your thoughts on Quasimodo and Esmeralda are an excellent expansion on that idea.

they are best friends I love PHOEBUS! I love him he is so kind! He is quite literally a knight in shining armor with his looks and his personality. I’m so glad he is in this movie. Because he gets to help our heroes defeat the villain. I love him he is so nice! And he does nothing but help people all he does is help people for the greater good! Like Quasimodo he is very selfless! And fun! He may be brash sometimes but he’s so kind to everybody he meets. And he is so goofy! I would do anything to hang out with PHOEBUS and Quasimodo and Esmeralda.

Quasimodo and Phoebe is sitting in a tree Quasimodo grabs a book. CBS opens it to discover it’s the hunchback of Notre Dame by victor Hugo. They begin to read it together and they discover everything that the book has in store. They discovered that book is a darker version of what could’ve happened to their story. And as Maraldo comes up to them sitting in a tree reading she climbs up and takes the book from them and starts to read it to them and they laughed together. Esmeralda is laughing at the characterizations of everybody in the novel. Just a cute moment. Between the three of them laughing and reading a book about their lives. Anyways what are you guys thinking? I think it’s cute do you guys?

I absolutely love all three of them and their relationship dynamics in the movie. There’s a one-sided rivalry of sorts when Quasi distrusts Phoebus’ intentions, but Phoebus never does anything but show genuine respect and good will towards Quasi and Esmeralda. I remember having a crush on him when I was a kid lol his character is just amazing.

There's an interesting psychological element to this film. Quasi, idealises Esmeralda, and Frollo sees her as a temptation, or desire to have, neither really see's her complete personality, but Phobus does. In fact he even gives Quasi the same respect, seeing him as a person, not something to be pitied or revolted by.

@theenergetichopecat7006

bingo! That’s where my thoughts too that’s why I smell that she was Phoebe’s. It’s because he saw her as a human being. Not one way or the other just a human being so she chose him for that reason. Esmeralda chose Phoebus because she had romantic feelings towards him and she only kept calling Quasimodo friend cluing into the fact that she was only best friends with Quasimodo and had romantic feelings towards fetus. So yeah and Quasimodo decides to let Esmeralda come with Phoebus what about your decision of him as a young man. Because he realized how he and his master both sides Meralda and he decided it wasn’t right so he said I’m gonna let her go with a man who truly sees her as who she is as a person so he decided to let her go. What about your decision of him. What a mature decision of him! I applaud him for that! He made the right decision to let her go with a man who she truly had loved and had romantic feelings for. And the man who truly saw her for who she was. And one day Quasimodo would find a love of his own and live happily ever after. But for now he is content being excepted and having friends. But later he would find love. And live happily ever after with his lover.

So glad you finally watched this one! Such a fantastic soundtrack and an underrated movie. You mentioned listening to the musical cast recording, but there is also a French musical called 'Notre Dame de Paris' which follows the original novel much more closely than the Disney movie/musical. It has some beautiful songs and the staging is pretty interesting.

This Movie came before the muscal, which also explains why that has a few more songs in it, but the musical also draws more closely from the original Novel by Victor Hugo, hence it's even darker tone

6:20 The story of Frollo and Quasimodo is far more tragic in the novel. In the book, Frollo is the archdeacon, not the judge, and names Quasimodo out of genuine love and care, having found him abandoned at the steps of the cathedral. Quasimodo is an actual ecclesiastical name. It was common for people to be baptized according to the day they were born, and Frollo found the baby on Quasimodo Sunday (the following one to Easter Sunday), a festivity dedicated to all non-baptized babies. This is because, according to medieval Catholic Church's teachings, non-baptized babies are just "half formed" as they are not part of the Church.

The stage musical was based off of this film, though the musical follows the book more closely (Made of Stone, the tragic ending). Also, probably the reason Frollo reminds you of Javert is that Les Miserables and Hunchback were both written by Victor Hugo.

Thank you so much for reacting to this, it belongs to my top 3 Disney movies and it also has my favorite Disney-soundtrack too. I love "God Help The Outcasts" and all the other songs in this movie ("A Guy Like You" being my least favorite) but I also would've wanted to see "Someday" and "Made of Stone" in the actual movie as well. But I understand they might have been a little too dark for the "family movie" (even though this is one of the most darkest Disney-movies altogether). I'm kinda glad that Quasimodo didn't end up with Esmeralda in the end. Someone on YT has commented it this way: Quasimodo saw her as an angel and Frollo saw her as a devil. Phoebus was the only one who saw her as who she truly was. I agree with it. Esmeralda and Phoebus are one of my favorite Disney-couples and I'm glad all of them became friends in the end. Like you said, Quasimodo found love within himself and by the fact that without Frollo's influence, people finally accepted him. I love how the child from the beginning of the movie is the one who takes the first step, because it reminds us how genuinely and in a good way curious and openhearted children can be compared to some of the adults.

Those other songs were created after the Disney movie was made, for the stage version in which they deliberately decided to go darker and stick closer to the book. They couldn't have included those songs in the movie even if they'd wanted to, bc those songs didn't exist yet. XD

Well, this went nothing like the book. In the original story Esmeralda does take pity on Quasimodo but she also makes it VERY clear she does not like him, it's just that she has this pathological thing with helping others which actually lands her in a loveless marriage with a man named Gringoire whom she only married so the Court of Miracles wouldn't kill him for trespassing, she very quickly decides to cheat on him with Phoebus, who himself is engaged to a woman called Fleur-De-Lys, when Frollo pushes himself on her and she rejects him he stabs Phoebus and frames her, Phoebus immediately turns against her and she is captured and hanged, during her execution Frollo makes an off-hand comment about her and Quasimodo kills him in a rage, then dies of starvation while holding onto her corpse which was thrown under a bridge near the whorehouse while Phoebus marries Fleur. It is also discovered that Esmeralda was not born a gypsy but rather she was taken from a catholic woman as payback for Frollo taking Quasimodo, and she reconnects with her mother right before her execution.

Hi, I know you probably didn’t intend to come off as offensive but the G word is in fact a slur! The best way to refer to this group of people is romani, at least that’s what most of them prefer. I know in America this slur isn’t really known so often americans don’t even know when watching this movie, and they are throwing it around a lot in the movie too, but still, just a heads up.

There actually was an opera that adapted Hunchback back in 1836 called La Esmeralda. It was composed by Louise Bertin and the Libretto was written by Victor Hugo himself. The premiere was a colossal failure though. There have also been multiple film adaptations before Disney's. A silent film in the 20s, a sound film in the 30s, and a french film in 50s. The latter being known to be the most faithful.

The novel was written by Victor Hugo in 1831, Animated film came out in 1996, In 1999 it went to the stage in Germany under the title "Der Glöckner von Notre Dame", and in 2014 it came to the US stage in English. I do believe though it will never make it to Broadway due to the cast size, all the main characters, as well as singers and dancers (which are typical) however the show also calls for a full choir as well which would make the cast size too large to make any profit, Menken refused to compromise the integrity of the show and cut the additional full choir so it won't go to Broadway. Also, the stage version stays more accurate to the end of the novel.

This Disney movie came before the Disney stage play. As you probably noticed, there are a few song changes. The play is longer and a bit more book accurate, so they are songs in there that are either just extra or that were cut from the movie probably because it was for a younger audience ,and you can't have it too long. Some songs were just swapped out for other ones. Also this story was originally a book by Victor Hugo, the same person who was the author of Les Mis.
