Man, it stuns me over how many people don't realize Rasputin was a real person, and while not seen as a villain by most accounts, was absolutely seen as supernatural over the sheer amount of abuse that was needed in order to kill him. How are people still not aware of this guy?

He did play a part in starting the revolution, all be it indirecty by giving the wrong advice to Nicolai. Also casing a lot of drama and intrigue. He must have been a real smooth talker to manage all the things he did, especially with the ladies. Considering that the real Rasputin looked pretty much like the animated one.

The biggest difference I can see is that Anastasia was not alive the whole time. She died along with her family. But for the longest time people didn't know this, and tried to dress up women to look like her for money, like they're shown doing in here. There's even a famous picture of several girls posed together that look exactly the same, claiming to be her. The main reason they believed she was alive was that when they looked over the bodies, they didn't initially find her. But they have since found her in the grave, thus exposing the scammers for what they were.

I think the initial reason they went for a more fantasy angle on this is because it was less likely to seem like they were actually saying that the original Anastasia was still alive. Now that the conspiracy that Anastasia survived is done away with they’ve been able to adapt the stage show with a more reality driven plot and villain

Rasputin was a real "mystic healer" who worked for the romanov family for prince alexei who was suffering from a genetic condition that made him very sick and likely would have left him paralyzed or killed him before he became tsar. there were rumours Tsarina Alexandra was cheating with Rasputin because he became a close confident. The people thought he was meddling in political affairs. Rasputin has so many attempted murders. he survived being poisoned and shot but actually died by drowning just like in the movie.

This movie is inspired by the rumor which started after the Russian Revolution in 1917. The Czars of Russia, The Romanov family were massacred (in Yekaterinburg) after the Czar abdicated that year and rumors started to spread of Anastasia and her younger brother Alexei about they scaping and being alive (which later bringed a lot of girls to say they were Anastasia) then in the 90s when the bodys of the Russian family were found they discovered that it was not Anastasia but her sister Maria and Alexei's bodies that were separated from the others but everyone died in 1917 that night. It was a tragedy. (The movie is inspired by those girls who tried to make the Empress (the Czars Mother who was still alive) believe Anastasia was alive and it was them.

Fun fact… with Rasputin… they were not that far off. He claimed to have mystical powers and was the one who actually helped heal Anastasia’s little brother, Alexi, from a serious blood disease. And he did weasel his way it into family because the of that power and actually became more of a reason to destroy to Romanov family. He also was poisoned and shot three times and only died by drowning. So the legend pretty close to real…. MINUS the rapist and drunk he was in real life. Also I will say as an adult, the musical villains was better but having a guy simply come after her to preserve a pretty terrible way of living is honestly not the best way to introduce kids to Anastasia… but for a kids movie it was a good idea to use Rasputin to be the villain cause he was AND used “mystic powers” so he really does fit in with myth and “legend” around him.

Rasputin funny enough is grounded in reality in the sense he called himself a holy man as a russian mystic that got power through the russian royalty. they ended up assassinating him because they thought he had to much political control.....so while i never saw the stage i feel that villian was probably based on rasputin on the nonmagical front

The movie had some great VAs too- Angela Lansbury (Grandmother) who also did Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast, Meg Ryan as adult Anastasia (not her singing voice though), Kristin Dunst as young Anastasia, John Cusack as Dimitri, Kelsey Grammer as Vlad (he did the singing too for he's been on Broadway too), Christopher Lloyd as Rasputin (Jim Cummings did his singing voice), Hank Azaria as Bartok, and Bernadette Peters as Sophie. I will admit, I wished you listened to the credits song for it's actually my favorite on the soundtrack- At The Beginning sung by two artists popular at the time Richard Marx and Donna Lewis. The reason the vilain in this movie is Rasputin and not in the musical (first out of the fact that the musical is not presented on screen) is simply because the movie came out in 1997, the Cold War was barely just ending, the USSR was breaking and Russia was still getting over the revolution. The whole context was just way too sensitive and producers said they wanted to make a fairy tale they did not want to have history really involved. :)

I have always loved this movie for so many reasons. The story obviously but the visuals and the absolutely gorgeous music and lyrics just...send it for me. I will still sing these songs in the shower lol

Ok, so this movie is way better that the musical, the movie was launched in 1997, I've been watching it for about 25 years at least once a year, I am playing Anastasia in a Disney musical in my group. Ive seen the musical, not as near as the greatness of the animation.

This was actually my favorite movie as a kid and I still have the VHS. If I remember timing, they hadn't actually identified Anastasia's remains by DNA yet so this was a possible conspiracy theory. Except the demon ghouls maybe.

"What in the Jafar madness is that?" Lmao. FYI Anastasia, her family, and Rasputin were real. Rasputin was a munk who was a friend of the royal family in real life. Tragically, Anastasia was murdered with her family during the revolution. They were all captured by communist guards and shot. She was 18. Anastasia was known for being the prankster/ joker in the family. She literally "terrorized the cooks." Lol

Rasputin was a real person, mystical advisor to Anastasia’s mom. Everyone else thought he was creepy and a heretic, possibly a traitor. Also voiced by Christopher Lloyd aka Doc Brown from Back to the Future

Im just happy that we have good russian in foreign movies cause im as mostly russian tired of seeing my country and my people as nothing then stereotypes and villains. And even those stereotypes kinda racist since Russian is not just european country, but also asian and have many ethnicities that came from modern russian terrrytory wich culture is still alive and supported. And j really never understood why typical russian woman is blondie with blue eyes. We aint Sweden. Just like most slavic women russian also moslty brown haired with blue eyes. Egh, they can't even do normal stereotype.

this was Don Bluth's bid to make Fox the new Disney lol. He wanted it to look expensive and it worked! he blended the cgi with the animation and it was widely praised at the time, but looks a bit clunky now- This movie came out in 1997, around the time the remains of the actual Romanovs were uncovered. The other thing that is very distinctive about don bluths people led films is his reliance of rotoscope- it gives the performances a realism in one way but the feeling of a school play also? Anyway, i think Anastasia was the best thing Don Bluth ever did, and I miss when actors who couldnt sing were given sound alikes lol

I personally prefer the musical over the movie. No hate for the movie I grew up with it on vhs and dvd I would watch it on repeat. Also even though the song Dark of the night it doesn't make it into the musical the Melody part of the spell during the song is actually used during stay I pray you and them stage Musical

I have watched this movie so many times, i have it on dvd. I love everything about this movie. The music is amazing! I have seen the musical one time in the Netherland in feb 2020. I really liked it, needed to get used to it, because I watched the movie in English. So I could not really sing with them🤭🤣 I like this villain, this movie is more magical and the musical is realistic with it's villain. But the set, clothes everything was amazing! Great reaction!

Once upon a December was the first song (not counting nursery rhyme songs) I memorized the second being lugia’s theme from Pokémon 2000 this movie is Also the movie that actually got me interested in history made me really sad to find out as an adult after listening to a documentary about the Romanov family the Anastasia didn’t survive and all the reaaaaly bad decisions that lead to there exile and eventual murders

Big fan of the musical as well, and I agree that Gleb was a better antagonist, I was so thrilled with the way it was adapted. In the movie, that ballroom sequence has always been stunning though, especially the part at the end where she dances with her dad. Great to get the perspective of someone who started with the musical rather than the film!

This is a Don Bluth film, his movies have some of the most beautiful animation. He used to be a Disney animator, so a lot of him movies have Disney (especially older Disney) elements to them. I'm genuinely surprised Rasputin wasn't in the musical, he is Scar levels of villain. Absolutely fantastic (and one of the best villain songs)

This will forever be my favorite movie AND real life Princess. There's a book of her actual diary entries and it goes all the way until when they officially had to be massacred. It even has photos & that gold dress she is wearing at the end that is a real dress she wore. ugh you made me so happy reacting to this. Also - little 'fun fact' Vlad in real life actually had some part in the family being massacred if you research it.
