At my job, each floor has a break room with a tv in it. Usually the tv is on the same two or three channels (food stuff, renovation stuff, sports stuff). No one usually minds if someone changes the channel. One day, Princess Bride happened to be on Part way through, a guy comes in, itching to see "the game". He had already grabbed the remote and asked (out of habitual politeness) if he could change the channel. The older woman across from me, without taking her eyes off the tv, said "If you change the channel off of Princess Bride, you're going to make an enemy out of me you don't want." He froze, not sure if she was joking or not. He looked at me (in all my dark attire) and I said "Don't look at me. It's the Princess Bride." Apparently he had never seen the movie. He spent ten minutes trying to convince everyone in the room to change the channel without luck. Then, one of the floor leads (an army guy, man's-man, sports fan kinda guy) walked by and the dude's eyes lit up. "Hey man! Don't you want to see the score? They're watching some chick movie." Army guy looks at the tv, looks back at dude and said "That's not a chick movie. That's The Princess Bride. You can google the game. You don't change the channel on princess bride." Movies like the Princess Bride brings people together in a way that's difficult to purposefully create. It has to be something made out of love for story telling rather than love of profit. You can tell that this movie was made from something deeper, which is why it has such a magic to it. Out of tens of people that cycled through that break room during that movie, the only person that wasn't immediately captured by it was the one that didn't know anything about it. By the end of my break, even he was showing curiosity in it. I don't know if he ever watched it or not, but I know he won't forget it. It's the movie where literally everyone refused to change the channel. If the make a remake, I doubt I'll be interested enough in it to see it. There's not much that can be done to it to improve on it. Anything done to it would be a down grade. It's pretty much perfect, even after thirty years. Maybe in another thirty years, but I imagine it'll still stand up at 60 as it does at 30.

@@paigekrome1141 - I think something like that is the way to go. Since the idea of the original novel is the "good parts version", a new adaptation would be Savage (either as himself or the grownup version of his character from the movie) wanting to introduce his kids to the source material, but discovering how much was left out, so our new film is just him reading the book and the new visuals are what he imagines the previously-unadapted material to be.

I've watched the Princess Bride several times, and think it's a great film. It has a good sense of humor and feels kind of like a proto Shrek- only with less bathroom humor. I wouldn't say it is perfect though, as I think that makes it sound like films in its vein are finished. "We've got your True Love in a bottle and ain't nothing better going to come out! So why try?" Shrek hits a similar tone as the Princess Bride, spoofing traditional fantasy stories, should it not have been made? I can see why there is suspicion of the rumors of a remake, but let's not pretend nothing "Princess Bride-esque" will ever equal the 1987 movie. After all, said movie is based on a book, and, to my knowledge, the latter is good, but the former is great. Let's not pretend there's nowhere to go but down from here.

Pretty much matches my sentements. I don't want to go pass down the remake to my niece. Oh I'm sure it will be great with better setpieces and a bigger budget with CGI allowing for far more fantastical shots, or at the very least cleaning up practical effects and allowing for better window dressing, and an actual musical score instead of 'a guy wit ha synthesizer' (Yea the original movie only had a guy with a synth for the whole damned thing, and it is amazing.) But... I don't want that. I want to show this ersion to my niece because she's getting close to the age I first saw this, and last unicorn, and a bunch of other movies that's been either remade, talked about being remade, or in the case of last unicorn might have been but without christopher lee... I hope it never will. I don't want to say what will happen will be garbage. I might even enjoy seeing a 'truer to the original novel' take on the story' even though I kinda hated the downbeat disheartenedness to the framing device and the ending. However regardless of whatever new happens? We will always have the original. That can't be taken away.

What’s funny to me about the Princess Bride is that what I love most about the movie isn’t the movie itself (even though it’s undoubtedly fantastic) but the memory of watching it, of my mom sharing it with me. This was a huge part of my childhood, my mom and I would quote the rhyming scene back and forth endlessly, and I feel like a remake wouldn’t be anywhere near as enjoyable since it would be separate from those memories. Well-constructed, well-edited, and just to show how much I agreed with its message, I gave a friend their first-ever viewing of The Princess Bride TODAY. He loved it, and I love that it's still around and people still show it to their friends and there's virtually no hate for it. It's just timeless. Earned a sub, sir. (And congrats on the 200k!)

My grandfather passed away a few months ago and even though he didn't show me The Princess Bride, he loved it when we watched it together. And the grandfather character reminds me of how he used to tell me, my siblings, and my cousins stories. There was always a bit of Métis tongue and cheek when he read to us or when―even better―he passed stories on from his mind to ours, making them up as he went, populating the narrative with us and never failing to reach a satisfying conclusion. Even though Peter Falk was a white, Jewish man and likely had no knowledge of Métis storytelling traditions, he captured a style parallel to the "let's make a joke out of this because I love it" method of storytelling that is really at the centre of how we tell our traditional narratives. And that parallel style is at the core of The Princess Bride and I love it so much for that. When I watch the movie now, I see my grandfather and I always have to fight the urge to cry. My worry is that if the film were remade, that humour would just be replaced with that meta-ironic, marvel tone that is trying to be tongue and cheek but just comes off as obnoxious. I don't think it would be intentional―if anything it would be very ambivalent―but it would end up being nothing short of disrespectful in execution, I think.

I still remember my friend calling me and telling me we were going to see this movie, and I was baffled because I hadn't heard of it, and could find NOTHING about it in the papers or advertising anywhere. It looked like a weird girly flick from the one still used as the poster, billboard, showtime listing, etc... But my friend had seen it already, and had decided I must also, and wouldn't say anything more about it than simply, "Trust me. It's YOUR kind of movie." So trust her, I did, and thirty years later, it STILL is my favorite movie ever. I think it isn't really that tonally different from the book, though. I made it my mission to find a copy shortly after seeing the movie, and even sent away for the reunion scene at the ravine bottom, IIRC... I think the only difference is that the book is a little more jaded while the movie is a bit more optimistic, essentially the difference between how one might actually view the film first as a child like his daughters were, and then later as an adult might find a different somewhat rueful laughter at the same scenes for different reasons twenty years later after life has worked them over a bit. The movie is the same satire, just leaves out some of the adultness of the book while keeping the awareness of it in the quick witted and ever so quotable dialogue quips that I appreciate so much that I could probably recite the entire film from start to finish. To remake the movie would be like rewriting the book - anything that was the same would be the same and anything done differently would just seem wrong. Why remake something that is highly unlikely, perhaps even impossible, to match the original, let alone improve it. Any new adaptation would have to be done in an entirely new medium which could not be measured by the same yardstick as this film. It worked as an adaptation TO film because of it being a different medium than the story in its original form. He wouldn't have rewritten the book framed as the movie was and tried to call it a new edition of the novel. Perhaps in the future there will be an interactive feature where one can view the story as each of the characters and participate or something else bizarre or unusual enough to try and tell the story in a whole new fashion we have not yet imagined, but with this film in existence and still relevant in its original glory, to try and make another film will only ever have hope of being second best at best, if not a total disaster. If they want money, re release the original in theatres. I'd rather pay to see that than a new reboot with alternate players. Animated might be the only potential avenue, come to think of it. Voice overs would probably have to be done by the same actors to give it any chance of success though.

That's the problem with modern remakes, they aren't made out of passion and desire to make a good film, they're made with the intention to make money
@TheHardFandomLife5 жыл бұрын
Films were always made with the intention to make money. I don' think that has changed. What has changed is that the studios no longer trust the teams who do genuinely want to make good media to do it on their own. Everything must be approved via the Studios' idea of what will sell.
@UpRoaryus5 жыл бұрын
@@TheHardFandomLife I think they meant the ONLY intention is to make money. There has not been a great movie made that was not created to bring about some particular vision and share it with others. In order to make a decent film you must recognize that it's purpose is to tell a story, t o transport the audience into someplace other, or even someone other. Many producers today have not done the work on the fundamental elements of storytelling, but seek to farm content from already proven popular ones, and think that applying some formulaic timing and eye candy visuals will make it something people want the same way those original stories were received. They have hype and release dates set, announce casting decisions and preview costume design before they have a f'n SCRIPT. And then have the audacity to be surprised or disappointed when it doesn't get the love they expected to cash in on. There are so many stories yet to be told on screen, but they have no interest in crafting new journeys. They think that tweaking the old ones or touching up the look of it qualifies as something new, but it doesn't. Why would I want to see the Disney films I loved in animated form be re-imagined in live-action? It is not a new experience just so I can ooh and ahh at the cgi. It doesn't make it better, or even different enough to be worth seeing at all. I did the Jungle Book because my mother wanted to see it, and was barely kept awake because the story wasn't something I needed to experience again. I won't bother with any others even as a freebie on the internet. I'd rather watch the originals with that time. Filmmaking used to require a healthy degree of faith - GOOD filmmaking still does. You have to have a story that wants telling first, then a script which effectively tells it, then you must find the cast and crew to bring it to life in the artistic design that vision demands. If you cast people that bring the characters to life, it doesn't matter if people knew their names before or not, because they will be known AFTER. Do the best you can do with the right tools, even on a budget and you can believe that the money will come if you craft something decent enough to tell the story effectively. Nobody wants to risk investing in the unknown anymore, and that though, is really what art is and greatness lies in bringing attention to what was unseen. Perfect example is Deadpool vs Batman V, Superman. I predicted the fate of those two films immediately upon hearing how Deadpool finally came to be. And that was a KNOWN property that had a tappable fanbase that studios still seemed reluctant to mine. I saw the leaked footage, knew they had a script and vision first, as well as enough LOVE for the character to take risks in MPAA ratings to stay true to the right way his story should be told, and I said it would be a better film than the Batfleck hype and anticipation would ever develop into. Deadpool broke records and BvS broke a lot of fans hearts. I loved Batman as a character, didn't even know who Deadpool was and I knew it would go that way. Deadpool is one of my new favorite things because they did the proper job of telling me a new story, and I loved it. Budget and expectations so much lower and SO much better to watch than the other. At least television has come back to form after the reality tv blight. And I will not set an eye on any remake of the Bride. No. Never. Not. Nope. No. I'd happily watch the original three times over than see a new version even once. I like that journey the way it is ... Perfect.

Just thought I'd add that while yes, updating older media with flashier newer graphics and spending money on making things fresh makes classics more accessible to "young people", I feel it shouldn't be understated how timeless a good story can be. I mean, to this day many of my friends consider their favorite stories to be the ones that hit them the hardest, not the ones that looked the prettiest. It's why games like Final Fantasy VII and Shadow of the Colossus are well loved to this day, despite having aged dramatically in the years that have passed since their release. I work at a retro gaming shop, and I am delighted and surprised everyday by the amount of young people who come in wanting to buy a retro game console because they don't want to miss out on the timeless storytelling of gaming past. And, I may add, we sell lots of old dvds and the amount of times I hear, "Wow I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid, how could I have forgotten about this," is insane and we sell so many things because of nostalgia alone. Let me tell you, movies like Princess Bride never stay on the shelf for long.

“And God, does that final line make me want to cry every time I watch it”. You too 😢😭. When I first saw The Princess Bride, the fight with the 6 fingered man had parts cut. Indigo was saying his line about him preparing to die, then it cut straight to where he stabbed him, which was confusing at the time, as the man he stabbed then had cuts on his cheek that you did not see happen. Anyone else seen it like that? Edit: When the “As you wish” line came up, I chocked wanting sob 😢. I don’t know why, but it gets me every time.

Wow, this really hit home for me. I was a freshmen in high school when my mom wanted to sit down and watch this movie with me (freshman in college now). I basically acted like the kid in the beginning of the movie. I didn't want to watch it because one, it was a live action older movie (both of which I wasn't a fan of at the time) that I've never heard of before, and two, because of the title. But, with the promise of something I can't even remember anymore, I reluctantly watched the movie. Well, I absolutely loved it. I don't even know why but I just fell in love with the movie. It's really not my type of movie to watch but for some reason I absolutely loved it. It is definitely something I tell my friends and family to watch and will eventually make my children watch.
