The Princess Group by Johann Gottfried Schadow - a Masterpiece of Early Classicism

The princess group by the sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow, like the quadriga on the Brandenburg Gate, is considered a major work of early classicism in Berlin. The sculpture depicts the Prussian crown princess and later queen Luise together with her younger sister Friederike in a very natural way.
After Schadow had created a first sculpture in plaster in 1795, he was commissioned by King Frederick William II to create the group in marble as well.
The result was shown at the Academy Exhibition in 1797 and received with enthusiasm by experts and the public. What followed, however, was a tragedy for Schadow. The sculpture disappeared from public view a short time later and fell into oblivion. The client had died and the new king and husband of Luise, Frederick William III, did not like the group at all. He found it lacking in majesty and the depiction was too physical for him.
It was not until 1921 that the group was again on permanent display.
Normally, the plaster statue is located in the Friedrichwerdersche Kirche and the original of the marble group in the entrance axis of the Alte Nationalgalerie.
But until February 19, 2023, both versions (in plaster and marble) can be viewed together in a special exhibition on Johann Gottfried Shadow's work in the Alte Nationalgalerie that is well worth seeing:

Ich freu mich jedes Mal, wenn es ein neues Video gibt. Sie verschwenden auch keine Zeit, es geht immer gleich zur Sache und alle Informationen sind interessant und gut mit Bildmaterial unterstützt. Die ältere Schwester hatte doch etwas am Hals, weshalb sie an dem Tag ein Tuch rumwickelte, und das wurde dann mit der Veröffentlichung der Statue ein Trend in der Stadt, oder? So in etwa habe ich mal etwas gelesen.

Herzlichen Dank für die Rückmeldung. Ja, nach Aussage von Schadow hat er deshalb das Halstuch gewählt. Vielleicht hatte sich Schadow aber auch durch eine Skulptur, die er zuvor in Rom gesehen hat, inspirieren lassen. Die werde ich kurz in einem nächsten Video zu Schadow zeigen

Ich war ja an einer verkleinerten Porzellankopie interessiert und wurde ganz hellhörig, als du darauf zu sprechen kamst. Ich habe natürlich einen deftigen Preis erwartet, ist ja edles Porzellan und Handarbeit, aber dann wurde mir beim tatsächlichen Preis doch ganz schwindelig, haha!

Ich bin demnächst in Berlin, welcher ist denn der schönste Weihnachtsmarkt in Berlin? Ich kenne nur den an der Gedaechtniskirche und den beim Alexanderplatz. Die sind beide nicht so toll!

Schwer zu sagen. Wer gerne Schlittschuh fährt, geht zum Markt am Roten Rathaus, Kunstgewerbe gibt es am Schloss Charlottenburg (wohl das letzte Mal in diesem Jahr) und am Gendarmenmarkt (dieses Jahr auf dem Bebelplatz), Rummel gibt es an der Frankfurter Allee. Insgesamt gibt es halt so viele Märkte in Berlin, dass sich das ganze verteilt und nicht so gebündelt an einem Ort zu finden ist, wie in anderen Städten
