Today I'm sharing my Priory of the Orange Tree reading vlog! I am not usually a fantasy reader (although I'm desperately trying to get into the genre) but I wanted to give this popular fantasy book a try after seeing so many glowing reviews.
COMMENT and let me know if you've read The Priory of the Orange Tree and tell me: what are your thoughts on the book?

The optimism in those first 200 pages 😂 like “maybe it’s normal I’m confused and not super liking it but I think it’ll get better…” we were bamboozled!

thank you so much for your video, ashley! (and especially for your honesty) i'm editing my reading vlog currently of reading priory and her prequel and i have almost identical feelings as you. to be honest i'm afraid to share them because of all of the 5 stars out there but you've given me a boost of courage to share my feelings as well so thank you thank you thank you.

I recently finished this and overall enjoyed it. I'm a pretty critical reader so I did have some issues and I like to see what other people think which is what brought me to your video. When you said that you think people are re-reading it to figure it out, I felt like I could relate. because after I finished it I felt like I wanted to re-read it so I could have better understanding of what was going on from the beginning in order to fully appreciate it, because at times I was also confused. Anyways, I am an big fantasy reader and like I said I did overall enjoy it as a whole and think Samantha Shannon has a special way with words.

I enjoyed parts of this book a lot but I think if I were reading it rather than listening to the audio I would have had a hard time following some of it, especially in the beginning. It’s probably a hard start for breaking into epic fantasy but is definitely better start than some of the ultraviolet ultra male centered tomes out there!

YUP the genre is overwhelming ultra male which I’ve been trying to avoid 😂

I did the same thing you said you did and came to watch videos to see if anyone could tell me what’s going on and why it’s so hyped. I agree with everything you said. I don’t understand the hype personally. There were things I really liked but they were such tiny moments in such a long book

I’ve gotten some comments on this video from people who love it that have helped me understand why some people seem to like it so much. Apparently some people like that this is a calmer fantasy novel that spends more time on character development than keeping up with crazy action scenes but idk it just did not work for me either 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Ive recentlt started reading fantasy books...anf this one is NOT the one to start with!! Lol. You should try something easier. Im currently reading ERAGON. such a good quality story and easy to understand. I am loving it. Good luck on your future fantasy reads..if you choose to continue that is..lol

Hahah I knew it wasn’t the best choice I was just so curious about this book after hearing so many 5 star reviews. Definitely going to try to continue to find what works for me!

After 200 Pages I thought it was so boring😩. So I even switched to the audio book, so after 400 pages personally I thought it got better, but I over all I didn't like it

I don’t like fantasy books either. As a writing/literature in college it was mandatory that I take the course CS.Lewis circle. Well in the circle park I had to read the hobbit or the lord of the rings and I can force myself to read all books because hey this is my college degree and I read many books I hated but I could not get past the fantasy and photo and I read it over and over the same page as a result I got my first C for a grade.

After reading The Way of Kings Part One last year I have given up fantasy at the moment. I have a hard time understanding when it comes to kingdoms and magic systems. It's embarrassing when young people understand fantasy more than I do. =)

The Way of Kings is a tough one. Very slow and can be confusing since the magic is complicated and the world is unique. The series is great but it's not for everyone. Don't let it deter you from fantasy as a whole, there are lots of great books that don't require nearly as much work to enjoy.

As an avid fantasy reader I found this book a slog, I'm fine with big books but this one's just unengaging. Most of the characters are superfluous and many are uninteresting. Also felt a current of misandry from it and especially from the priory. For a new fantasy reader I'd recommend either the hobbit or conan the barbarian. Both very short and approachable.
