THIS Florida prison has a furry little secret - a zoo full of alpacas, birds, alligators, a lemur and even a sloth. The farm at Stock Island Detention Centre, in Key West was founded by accident in 1994 when the prison fenced off an area underneath to protect a gaggle of ducks that kept getting injured while crossing the road between the jail and a golf course. Now the prison is home to over 150 animals, ranging from the original ducks and farm animals to alligators and a ten foot python. Jeanne Selander, who manages the farm, takes four volunteers from the prison to help care for the animals and maintain the farm.

This should be part of certain prisons. I mean...if all jail's to prison's had stages and programs the inmates could work for and graduate....look at what could become of the ones being released back into the communities. All prisons need to change. You can't stick them away, institutionalize them and expect a good outcome. Like that saying....doing the same and expecting a different result?! That's called insanity! Now if the prison system could be a more productive place, then inmates have a fighting chance when released. Just like the animals they care for. Dogs in a shelter are scared and sad and lash out because they never knew anything better. But take them out of that and socialize and work with them and themselves....a completely different dog. Love changes people. It’s the best medication for all. I hope someone comes on and starts implementing change to the prison system because you can’t lock up anyone and let them sit and think that’s humane. This place is very cool. As well as the animals and corrections officer!

i also wish prison was more about rehabilitation than punishment... you're taking the people with the worst life and making it even worst and somehow expect them to be better, how could it work. you shoud pay your debt to society by doing something usefull for it and that zoo is one of the best program i've seen so far

My local animal shelter actually uses inmates as workers. I think they have like five at a time. It's a county run shelter and it's tax payer paid so it makes a lot of sense. They do most of the manual labor so the staff can accomplish other things as well. There's no way all the daily chores could get done without the inmates. It's a program that helps everyone involved.

The intelligence of the pig to present its bowl for food could give us enough humility to stop eating their bodies. They are not farm animals, they are farmed animals because we farm them. We are so practiced at displacing our own actions and responsibilities onto the vulnerable groups we victimize we don't even know we are doing it.

This is one of the best things you can do to help rehabilitate prisoners. It's good for helping them build empathy, a sense of responsibility, and even gain a sense of purpose and meaning if they are low on self-esteem. Of course it wouldn't be a good idea for people with a history of animal abuse, but for most inmates exposing them to animals like this and letting the have an animal or animals they can take care of is a very good thing for them.

Having worked in the local jail, I can see how this type of program could be a turning point in someone's life. Deciding whether prison should be just punitive or be a rehabilitation opportunity or some mixture of the two has been going on since prisons were developed, and will probably continue to as long as prisons are necessary, so the success of programs like these is directly tied to recidivism rates and the current political landscape. I pray these guys do turn it around and continue to justify the benefits of rehabilitation programs like this, for themselves, future inmates and community at large. Well done to this Sheriff's office!!

That sort of mindset is what keeps criminals from ever growing as a person and transitioning back into society once they are out of prison. Change their perception and give them a basic education then maybe they won't step down that wrong path again. Again note that only a rare select few inmates are allowed this privilege. They are probably all non-violent offenders.

😺 What a positive response to a simple problem. Keep the ducks safe and give the inmates something worthwhile to do with their time. As more animals have been taken in, more opportunities have arisen for the inmates to develop positive attitudes and skills. Is there any possibility for the inmates to participate in a study course to obtain a recognised animal care qualification?

More prisons need programs like these with animals. Its too hard for most inmates to let their guard down to show some affection and have an emotional release, but with animals its easy. There's also no stigma for being cuddly with an animal either, so they don't have to worry about looking weak to other inmates. Definitely therapeutic and what these people need to become functioning members of society again.

This is what prison systems need. Natural therapeutic remedies. Give them books, let them raise plants, help the animals, make a nice nature trail, teach meditation and yoga. This builds love, peace, and character. These guys look so happy helping these animals. They are still human too and deserve a second chance of feeling human again.

I hope working there gave them some sort of transferable skills and get them a job at the zoo or animal shelter or something

I don’t care how you try to spin it, you cannot argue that the experience of caring for an animal will not turn these men into more productive and responsible members of society.

The guy at the beginning seems so relaxed petting the skunk. I think it would be wrong to give this work to people who do violent crimes. But minor offences this is a great idea.

It's really good that they're doing something like this for the inmates AND the animals! I can't help to find the similarity of an enclosed human helping enclosed animals a little.. interesting. Not saying they're animals cause animals are inevitably free, like humans, but when they get enclosed is when they need to be aided to have a better safer life, and its kinda like a "I help you, you help me" deal. It's interesting.

Its great for the animals that they get the love they deserve. Its also great for inmates to get a peaceful sense of mind that may have been absent from them, which probably led them there. But they are there for a reason. So the quote, “it helps me forget I’m in jail,” bothered me. They aren’t supposed to forget.

oh please, try to expand your small mind enough to consider what all the other posters have said, this cannot help but be good for the inmates and animals alike, so it's a really wonderful thing, I wonder what a program like this does to the rcidivism rate? Iwould betanything it brings it way down
