When we define ourselves, we confine ourselves. When we identify with our beliefs, we create all kinds of problems and limitations for ourselves. Who we are is not who we believe ourselves to be.

The magic moment of freedom for me was realizing that my "identity" was having no identity. I am who I am at this moment. Something different from a moment ago, and also different from a moment from now.

Beliefs make you attached to the outcome. And as a result you always want certainity.
@Gtfoots

certainty can leave you astray. By being open to everything but attaching to nothing. Allows you to let go and takes away the need to even be right it is just not that important to be right all the time.. Thoughts become emotions we attach to those thoughts create emotions and those emotions will lead to familiar behaviors. So by changing your thought you change your energy.

One of the many principles of enlightenment is to let go of your identity completely. Without identity there can be no prejudice or war. What you can get people to believe depends greatly on a persons identity. With identity it can be possible to get people to believe absurdities. Voltaire famously said 'Those who can get people to believe absurdities can get them to commit atrocities'. Everything this dude is saying is very true, but I have noticed that letting go of identity takes a lot of discipline and practice. I am practicing this now in my life. Paradoxically letting go of your identity will augment your ability to know yourself.

"When we define ourselves, we confine ourselves." So true. And persona being rooted in mask? That is very interesting. I have seen in my own life, not a need to do a persona, but, in getting attached to an ideal that appeals to me. Very quickly i find that life itself is still bigger than the ideal and lm left groping and considering again. ppl want stability and an ideal can offer that. almost like a mental laziness to not have to do any considering anymore now that Ive got my "ideal persona". Or the feelings of inadequacy drive us to claim some belief identity too.

Yep, so true, if society would just leave others alone, worry about their own identities, and stop holding others back, this world could be free, but they keep pulling others back & this is why everyone walks around happily, why can’t we all just get along & be truly free…. labels suck & its not right or fair.

This isn't a problem for the people in this metaphorical prison. It's a problem for the rest of us. Psychology calls it 'openness', as in, open-minded or close minded. Definitely one of the keystone plateaus of the human condition. Being someone who has already got all this, I find myself barraged with vectors, at the moment, of directions I could comment. So, alas, I'm overwhelmed into following none of them, lol. Or just can't articulate right, now. I'll give this thought though. While I completely understand your foundation, and follow along, up to the point when you are talking about not being one's thoughts. I understand not accepting labels very well, it's something I decided for myself 30 yrs ago, to not accept any label, but, right now, I can't see how one could completely separate their identity from their thoughts completely. Cogito ergo sum, I agree with Descartes on this point. And he declared this after doing precisely what we are discussing, by emptying his mind of any associations to the material world. We ARE what we think. No? I also understand the limits of language, and suspect that may be the divergence here. But I am interested to know if I'm not missing something at this particular point of the journey, i.e. all washed down, clean, pure identity, and then not seeing the door that opened. ....a past thought experiment ~ if I'm not my thoughts, then I am no different than a mushroom. ....Ok, let's try that. When we were very young adults, my friends and I decided the best philosophy in life was to just, 'be'. We had some, but really very little, idea how wise that was. Like a mushroom, just be. I am not my thoughts, I am a human, a human who is just 'be'ing. I am a human being.~ .. but, I am my thoughts, lol. Is their a milestone here for me to achieve??? Am I missing it? And, I think a big part of the present state of things is that it's not random evolution, it's social engineering. Public solidarity is the greatest force on this planet, without competition, and that power is a threat to those who hold power, now. i.e. they keep us separated, suspicious of each other. ahh, language suks. It's too cumbersome to be useful anymore. Take care,man. You're a wise traveller. Peace

To know yourself, BE yourself. Recognize the fundamental reality of being, without referring to a thought or a concept or a belief to tell you what you are. Be what you are, encounter basic reality, the immediate felt experience of the present. Don’t tell yourself a story about your experience in the present moment, simply be... in doing this we realize that what we truly are, our innermost essence and our true identity, has absolutely nothing to do with belief. I am that I am.

I find myself reacting to certain people honestly. People who don't want to share information, they're just arguing to prove that they are always right, and I'm always stupid. My brother does this at every family gathering. He and my father love to gang up on me usually. Everyone else just sits and doesn't respond to anything they say. I suppose I'm going to have to do the same lol. I give narcissists their supply of superiority. I really don't know how I identify myself. I've been going through a rough period for a while now. But I have no problem saying that "I don't know". But when someone calls me names I do become very triggered. When someone purposely calls me something I don't find to be true, it makes me mad. When someone calls me fat it doesn't bother me because I am lol. But when someone calls me stupid and unreasonable it upsets me because I try very hard to be a reasonable person.

This talk was very enlightening in my current life’s idea of what “ belief” I am holding too and it really does make sense to me to actually open up my heart/mind to other Ideas to grow. I’ve realized that I have put myself in a very high achieving goal in a certain belief system that I haven’t stepped back to reassess some deeper levels of realizations/workings within, before adherence to a belief. Not to mention after working through these needed steps first, will I actually be able to accept my self and or resonate with beliefs. It feels so odd to me to live in this world without an understanding and foundation of a higher being. This has most definitely amongst other helpful videos of yours really open my heart/mind to something to consider for personal growth. I Kindly appreciate your helpful content.🌿

This extends to things like sex and gender identities. Other cultural norms like monogamy and straight, or even gay. Why some gay people are antagonistic towards bi/pan/heteroflexible/homoflexible people. Also this is the heart of nationalism, which is at the heart of just about every bad political thing ever. Even if no one told you that things that are different attack you and things you care about, this talk explains the subconscious reasoning that happens innately in humans until we become aware and rise above it.

I have been really frustrated with trying to understand what bothers me so much about the people in my life. You perfectly put into words what I think is wrong with them and myself. We use belief as an identity. As someone who likes to debate and challenge what people think, i'm put off by how much people take it personally when I try to show them a new perspective, and I get upset when they think I was trying to attack them. Still, I think that it's easier to live confined by a label. You can fit in more easily with a defined group, and just live off the high that you get when they compliment you or make you feel a false sense of belonging. Sure, it's sad, but some people just can't get enough of it. I used to be like that, I know better now but I feel like I _felt_ happier back then

there's a lot of talk here about "we" and how "we" think and feel and respond to life situations. Who is this "we" ? Presumably all humans. That collectivism will not work. We are not all the same. There are lots of falsehoods in this piece. With this kind of thinking it is not hard to believe that thou hast failed in many attempts to make it with a woman. I recommend that you be flexible until your eyes water if you want to have a satisfactory relationship with a woman. I did it for more years than you have been living. Humility. Work hard on that. Treat her with the utmost respect. I was advised to identify with no one and nothing. I took the advice with gratitude. Who I am is nobody. So clearly I cannot wear the suit offered in this talk.

I can believe something without identifying with what I'm believing.
