In episode 5 at the 12:00 mark, there is a conversation between the current #2 and #6. This one minute conversation reveals the whole setting of the series. Who controls the village? Which side? (Which side of the "iron curtain", as that is what the spy agencies were aligned with.) #2 says that it does not matter, because both sides are becoming a mirror of each other. (Communist dystopian technocratic tyranny. My words.) He says they merge into one and form the new world order. Global system. (So, the Village is a real prison, but it is just what the entire planet is becoming, but on a small scale. This is why, in my view, there is no escape from the Village. The globe is becoming the Village. #6 holds out hope that he can escape and bring the Village to the attention of his superiors, to set things right. But his superiors were always part of the system that created the Village, and put him there when he resigned.) Interestingly, this is based on the true nature of our world. The West is to become a mirror of Russia and China. The current pandemic is being used to move this agenda forward. It is real, and not just a 1960's TV show.

Having just watched the show, I didn't come to that conclusion. But going in, knowing this is a common conclusion, there is one scene in, I believe, the first episode, where number 2 asks, "Is that an order...". I did find myself thinking what would have happened if he had said yes. It never happened again.

Interesting and helpful. Two minor errors with the synopsis. It's a launch, not a trawler, and he asks Mrs Butterworth to shew him the lease of the house and the log-book if the car. He notes that it is a newly drawn up lease giving no indication of his previous tenancy, and similarly the log book for the car is a replacement, with his previous ownership unrecorded. There is no record of Nr 6's previous existence in reality.

It then took nearly 30 years till the development of widely available computing and the Internet to give me a steady stream of INFORMATION about this show and I have to say it has been quite a ride. Interesting psychological theories, but I think the episode DID happen in the fictional universe of the show -- which makes it all the more frightening. Additionally, I feel that the black cat, etc., were all just red herrings thrust in by the Village superiors as an attempt to see how they might further put Number Six off-guard.

Originally, Mcgoohan intended to make just 6 or 7 episodes. In one parallel reality I believe the prisoner escapes and makes it back to London successfully. Being allowed to extend his artistic choices to many more episodes was I believe the trigger that let his "cold war" paranoia and ego run 🏃‍♀️ completely out of control resulting the controversial "Fall Out," final episode that so divides fans❤️I'd prefer that he successfully escapes.

For me, this is an analogy of returning to the land; "lost at sea" concept; walking amongst the dead; ya know, the 1666 Cestui Que Vie, that still applies today when one does not claim life, return to claim his estate from being administrated by the "Alice and Wonderland" courts (i.e. fiction/color of law), and chooses to act "legally dead" under the Law of the Merchant; on the sea, is where the pirates are fought ! Works for the end sequence showing #6 behind bars at the end every episode, if I remember correctly all but one was it, not sure if that's aa real memory. As as kid I loved Spy movies and shows, and the remark this was 007 for the psyche and Bond was for the physical - I paraphrase, was spot on! Very nice break down - as a kid I couldn't see any reason to want to leave the Village, and wanted Rover as a pet (never wanted it after me though). But as an adult each relived episode I experience as new meaning through adult eyes that I somewhat understood as a kid, but feel I get more as an adult and would rock with if I were a Professional Spy, that telling, would be telling, and #6 was too good for that, even though he let that tail follow him home and nab him in the first place, but I ain't playa hatin' - Stay alert, stay alive is all I'm sayin'! And too this day I too say "Be seeing you!" haven't used the gesture since folks started getting stupid about seeing symbols and thinking you mean stupid things like WP and such, and I'm Black, but it is what it is. I figure Rover's hauling them off to his lair for disposal, and if it's all mental, you get where that's goin' I reckon. But I ain't one to gossip... .

Very interesting analysis using allegory for this episode. I think one can peel away more layers and take away more meaning using this method. One which I think McGoohan himself intended . Each of us is indeed number 6 a " Prisoner" in a world experienced thru the 5 senses plus 1. That 1 extra higher sense is allegory. Where the other lower 5 keep you in the village experiencing the " literal " reality, asking who is number 1 leads you to "see" the bigger picture. Also notice, the warders of the village always try to keep you from number 1 and in the 5 ( the dumbing down ) and stay in the litteral interpretation of things. This is especially true of fundamentalist religion doing this with the bible. It would be very interesting re-watching the series with this perspective as I'm sure people will get way more from it.

Well, everybody thinks the show started in 1967 but I started watching it in July 1964 in Brussels on BRT - a chnnel which also showed the original series of Star Trek.

@@frankshailes3205 i KNOW it is strange. I am not making a mistake re the date because I was sent back from Katanga, Congo in April 1964 by air. I stayed with friends. Then my parents returned by sea because my father had internal bleeding and in July 1964 we stayed in an apartment in Brussels where there was a colour TV. I got the series 'The Prisoner' from BRT and there was the big baloon showed in the story, and I remembered the name of the episode as 'The prisoner'. I was particularly keen on it as well as the Star Trek series shown on the same channel, but in colour, whereas The Prisoner was in black and white. The series that is said to have been filmed in 1966 is in colour and I am sure it was not 'Danger Man'. I have never seen 'Danger Man' and hope to soon when I got a new TV so i can use a video player as my TV is incompatible being too old. The series or episode [I only saw that one episode or may be 2 and remember my parents asking me to join them when going shopping and I said 'No' as I wanted to watch it] was not on the French RTB channel. The Flemish speaking people liked movies in English. My mother tongue is French but I could understand English. I wonder whether they filmed a first 'episode' of The Prisoner in 1959 or before those of 1966, and by 'episode' I mean a show of one hour - [hope it's correct].. I do remember it being in black and white, yet the TV had colour because Star Trek was in colour. If they filmed Danger man in Portmeirion, perhaps they did an episode, or may be more, of The Prisoner? In this story no.6 runs on the beach and is caught up by the balloon. I noted it was a very strange concept... but the story goes that they had planned something else than this balloon and it had a defect, then they thought of this idea... I wonder when exactly. I can't have gone into a time warp or something... and watched The Prisoner in 1964, and I was for one year in Belgium in a boarding school, then returned to Katanga for 2 months, then my mother and I moved to Brussels where we didn't have a TV. She bought a flat at Avenue de l'Exposition, Jette, in 1967 and the TV was black and white, and I didn't watch any program, just the news, then I moved out and didn't have a TV, then arrived in London in 1968, and still didn't have a TV! I saw The Prisoner in 1964!

The entire premise is given to us at the very beginning of episode one in the opening dialog but we all missed it. The Prisoner: "Who is number one?" Number two: "You are, number six." Go listen to it again. This is the most brilliant TV show of all time, never to be surpassed.

Butterworth and Smith rather than Butterwort and Schmidt. In the interview to which you refer, Patrick McGoohan stated that No.1 was the alter ego of No.6. This makes far more sense than the misquote that he said "the Self", since the Self in Jungian psychology includes all aspects of consciousness and the unconscious, giving the false answer that No.1 was No.1 and No.6, which would have been meaningless, had he said it.

To make him choose a side. whose side are you on? he asks who number one is? the answer is GOD. is Christ. But he does not know this? He imagines HE IS NUMBER ONE. His ego rejects God and he places himself there. He rips off a black and white mask? and sees a monkey - evolution. a lie, he rips off that mask, sees himself as a lunatic. He chases himself, he battles himself. He is now a INDIVIDUAL and all his inquisitors salute him? This is exactly what they wanted. Someone to be above God. an individual. another anti christ. He is NUMBER ONE. He now escapes to the outside world. with Number two who is released? Satan is free too. He goes to his house and the door automatically opens. be seeing you? he salutes with the 666 okay signal. up at his eye? freemason signal. the all seeing eye. the village is not run by any one nation. who's side are you on? the world or God's side. He is a spy who has lost his way. He is debating why he kills? why he is working for his own side? the morals of what he did as Danger Man? why did you resign? why give up? He is looking elsewhere when they step in to TEST HIM. He wants out of the rat race. the chequered floors. the masked balls. who is in charge and who is a prisoner? who can you TRUST? He points out the prisoners are meek? while the warders are arrogant. He is arrogant. So the other prisoners instinctively know he is not one of them. And this is borne out by the last episode. He says he is number one. Not God. He has lost in the last episode. Not won. He is still a prisoner.

This is stupid. There's no occult analysis. He simply is telling you what you can see for yourself. This might be useful if you can't see otherwise it's a waste of time.

bj wood Sure, but satisfying analysis would examine the story in more detail. I have no problem with what analysis was made, just that it was not thoroughgoing. A long trip through a familiar plot without any interpretation along the way is boring.
