Apple superfan (45+ years now) here and since I had camped outside an Apple Store back in 2007 to buy an iPhone, I had purchased every iteration of that product - often in multiple models, sizes and colours… until the iPhone 16. I didn’t bother with it and I’ll keep on using the i15 generation until Apple cleans up its act!

Worst thing about it is how apple didn’t allow ANY of their devices to use most of apple intelligence, even though some of them are more than plenty powerful enough to use it. Like my iphone 15…it’s a year old and has plenty of power to use apple intelligence. And like what about the m1 or m2 iPads? It’s almost as bad as Microsoft denying windows 11 on devices with good enough hardware. It doesn’t make any sense!

Apple has pulled a fast one. This product was sold as something new but the reality is that we have a minor upgrade from the iPhone 15 pro with the promise of things to come. Apple has lost its way, the AI and this iPhone do not pass the Steve Jobs test: " is it great" and the answer is a resounding NO !

The problem is that Apple put all their eggs in one basket and has been working on goggles over the past few years. Meanwhile, every other company has been putting AI into their computers, phones and dishwashers.

I found a new use for the camera button the other day. When shopping and you want to snap a quick photo of a sale tag that you worry the cashier might question you on. It's easy to just pull out the phone with one hand, double tap to open/snap photo and then you have it incase you need it. Since it's a photo of a shelf/shelftag, it doesn't have to be perfectly cropped or centered. Just wing it!

The problem is most stores don't allow cashiers to change price without an override from management or customer service. I worked at walmart as a teen and didn't think anybody was lying if the sale came up wrong-- I simply had no option but to call for a price check.

You can do the same by just swiping the lock screen to the right and then take a photo using a screen button…

@@stingus It's not as intuitive as an actual button. But I'm glad people have figured it out. When Apple removed the home button and added all the swiping gestures, it was easy for people wanting to learn them to figure out, but a lot of folks still don't really know them. But on a personal note, I really don't like using the screen button while holding my phone one handed. I rely on my thumb to give my phone grip, and the button being in a gripping spot means I can take photos without risking my phone tilting off balance and falling. Regardless, I'm glad people get more options. More options is always good. I've enjoyed the camera button.

@@nauscakes1868you can literally do the same thing on the 15 pro max if you assign the camera to the action button. so many times i’ve quickly taken my phone out, held the action button for 2 seconds to open the camera, and simply pressed it again to take a quick picture - all with one finger - and then put it back in my pocket

Just upgraded my phone this past weekend from 13 pro max to 16 pro max, and I couldn't care less about Apple Intelligence or Camera Capture. Just happy to have Dynamic Island, USB-C, titanium, etc. But honestly, I probably would have been fine with my 13 pro max for another year.

Same. Just up'd from 13P to 16P. 13 had minor issues, but they were stacking. Even still, I'd have been fine waiting. That said, I got my daughter her 1st phone a couple weeks ago as a 15 (not pro) and got a great price. I up'd myself to the 16P a few days ago. I'm on the "free" upgrade plan and was due so isn't costing me any more than I was paying. But again, I'd have been fine. The 13P is great. My other daughter has a 14 that's great. Wife has whatever model she has after breaking whichever current model she's currently breaking.

So much angst among the influencer/reviewer folks stemming from the “age-old” influencer/reviewer conundrum: should I replace last year’s iPhone with this year’s iPhone??? To me, that’s not a conundrum: the answer will *always* be “No”. I manage to live like a pioneer/forest-dweller for upwards of two additional years after a new iPhone so that, for example, I went from a 13Pro to a 16Pro. Plenty of “new and improved” features for me to enjoy. And I’m not in perpetual Apple-hatred mode due to each year being evolutionary instead of revolutionary. It’s an Internet-connected pocket camera. The revolutions are over. Sit out a couple of years; the upgrades will seem amazing.

Exactly. There is almost no scenario where upgrading every year makes sense. Huge waste of money, and you'll barely notice any differences. It makes much more sense to wait a few years at least. That said, I'm still using my trusty ol' XR. 😆 Will probably get a 17pro next year though.

And so they’re really just talking to the other annual upgraders. But they carry on as if everyone’s an annual upgrader. It would be worth their time to speak to owners of previous models: Here’s what you’ll gain if you’re upgrading from a 14, … a 13, … a 12. We get that it’s *never* “worth” upgrading from last year’s phone. Don’t need to hear that tired old yarn again. And don’t just spout “if you’ve got a 13, it’s a good year to upgrade”. Tell us why. Specifically.

@@aljawad It won't be released globally before the end of 2024. There is an ongoing issue with the EU and the earliest date when EU countries can expect it is Spring 2025. This is quite shocking as ChatGPT and Gemini are a big mess in terms of privacy, the EU just putting unnecessary obstacles for Apple. I don't mind that the Apple Intelligence is delayed in favour of making it better. The only mistake they made is doing the marketing before the actual service.

In the UK, the AI stuff has yet to be properly released (later today?), but i've been using the summarise for a while and it's the same experience you describe. Not great and I can only see the same in image and writing tools. All I really want is a functioning Siri assistant that adds to Home/Homekit improvements. Glad I stuck with the 15 Pro.

I really like a lot of it. Creative writing is great. I really like the image playground. It’s ace. Gennmoji is something I actually use far more than I thought I would. Visual intelligence is actually really helpful. I think people are being overly critical.

Yeah, it's overhyped. But so is Google Gemini, Samsung AI, and all the other AI models out there. AI can be nice to have at times, but it's hardly a necessity. 🤷‍♂ At the end of the day, it's just a tool. That said, at the same time, Apple also gets unnecessary hate. There is no doubt that the 16pro is the best and most advanced iphone ever made... but it's almost "cool" to complain these days. So you get a bunch of people loudly broadcasting their supposed disappointment and screaming about lack of innovation and such. Not sure how much more people realistically expect from a slab of plastic, metal, and glass... but it's fun to complain, I guess. 😆 (Not talking about this particular review, just people in general.)

I find Gemini quite helpful. I will talk to Gemini with its live feature and get an answer faster and easier than Google searching the answer and reading a million websites, or even for other tasks. While I may be back on my iPhone since my Samsung is broken, it's still just as useful compared to Siri in any stretch of the imagine. Siri won't be able to do the tasks any other LLM can do until Apple is ready to drop the improved version, until then Siri is Siri.

Ok I honestly think peoples expectations are snoop doog high… honestly what else do you want your phones to do? Yeah Apple can improve and I still plan on getting the 16 pro max as the 60hz on the plus is robbery but I can see being mad about that but with the ai stuff like what else you want it to do? Apple AI is a hot mess. It’s almost everything I don’t care about, and nothing useful. It also mostly fails to work. Google does it a lot better, for example automatically finding calendar invites and adding them as pending into your calendar.

It's still being developed and worked on, the difference is that everyone else dropped theirs all at once. Apple is being Apple and taking its time working the bugs and issues out as best as it can, and then they'll focus on the other side of it. Apple is playing it smart. Very disappointed with Apple Intelligence. Rare massive L from Apple on basically every front rolling this out. It's just not reliable or very useful. Ive turned off the summary stuff because it's no good. The writing tools, Chat GPT is far better. Apple Intelligence just doesnt make the cut and Siri might've gotten dumber through these upgrades.

I have never been so disappointed in an apple product! The 16 has been the most underwhelming product I’ve ever owned. I expected the new Siri to be on par with Gemini but NOPE! this is the same old Siri. Chat GPT is a waste of space because you still a token system so it’s not unlimited help as it seemed to be presented to us. Very disappointed and makes me feel like this one needs to be returned!

Samsung came out in the beginning of 2024 with AI features and Gemini on the S24-series (all available at launch), and Apple couldn't even catch-up towards the end of the year. Galaxy S25 series next month will absolutely annihilate Apple's software.
