The problem is they never want to evolve characters past their [monetary] prime unless it can be presented as an "alternate" instance...or unless such changes prove to be more popular/profitable. My opinion.... Batman can be static......but modern authors keep breaking the status quo and deconstructing the character. At the heart of the character batman is the expert dectective consultant...the guy who the commissioner calls to handle difficult/insane cases. As long as you have a good status quo you can tell stories for years with just that. So stop the deconstructions, find a stable status quo for the character and let the character be the best he can be.

Batman being a crazy person, gotham being a hellscape, the batfamily infighting.....are all deconstructions that have to me....damaged batman. At the heart of his stories I at least come to see batman solve crimes that the police aren't equipped to handle....be it serial killers, alien thieves or even magic conmen. This is what's important. Yeah him having personal issues and such is spice to the story...but they shouldn't overcome the point of batman. solving crimes.

As a product he has to be familiar to the casual and backslidden fans who pop in from time to time....for parents who want to introduce their children to the character and to be a stable source for adaptations going forward. I think the biggest issue with changing Batman is that there are always at least 3 different Batman titles, along with usually having appearances in other books. I think if you could just go "Here, you wanna know whats up with batman, just read Batman", that would be a lot easier to know whats going on. Like any manga has the same kind of changes throughout, but its one book that tells the whole story. The problem with changing Batman, to me, is that you need to figure out how to follow his story through 4 or 5 different storylines running at all times and if you're jumping in....good luck figuring all that out lol

The no killing thing has always caused more problems than it has solved. Idk why comic writers keep trying to preach that if you kill the guy who’s trying to kill your mom that makes you a bad person because you couldn’t think on the fly of a way to keep the murderer safe. They’re naive and their messages should be more realistic and less likely to get an inspired person killed because they tried to save lives the Batman way. Honestly, why doesn't DC do the little recaps in the front of their books like Marvel does? I can't see any real reason not to do it. It would make things so less confusing for readers to pick up books with zero context of whats going on. It would be easy to just give a paragraph or two, briefly describe whats going on, and there. the main problem with comic books is the a story can span to different books and you have to buy that book just to know the rest of the story it's like a jigsaw puzzle you have to get all the pieces to get the full picture but you have to buy each pieces(book title) individually just to finish the picture, what worse is that some piece are cut(retcon) by the store owner(comic book publishers) for it not to fit in that puzzle leaving you with a piece that is part of the picture but also not. sorry for the long comment.

Like catwoman makes sense but nightwing and the rest of the bat family (except jason todd) doesn't make sense to be going along with it. It's so out of character and i hate it. But like when you ask someone what batmans all about, they would say hes the super with the power of money to prep for anything and pull out like a deus ex machina for anything and hes got his trusty butler at his side, Someone who hasnt read batman in a while or only played the games would just put it as bad writing or too weird and convoluted. A blurb would be nice, instead of "oh yeah i did this and this" while in a conversation. I wonder if jason will take out failsafe and be the ultimate batman with guns and damian taking his side.

Sounds like the real problem is DC Comics not having recaps in the front of their books, and also not knowing how to adequately identify and communicate their main continuity to their fanbase. But TBH I don't know how to properly manage a fictional character who's become this popular over this long a time....at least not while also keeping some sense of ongoing continuity and existence while maintaining popularity. Let's have batman not be eternally rich. Rich but not the richest. Smart but not Mobius without a chair. Not having learned all martial arts in 2 years. Let him meet a new villian that forces him to learn a new skill to overcome that challenge, but that leads to him paying lesser attention to his company, leading to a struggle of power, etc. There are so many genres that can be explored with just this approach. Batman is too overpowered to grow as a character.

Honestly (yeah this could be a hot take) Batman hasn't had a biggest character development since the 90s, stories like Bruce Wayne Murderer and Fugitive, Tower of Babel, Omac Project, etc. Are modern Batman character arcs that were already made in Knightfall, No Man's Land, etc. And honestly Batman doesn't need a biggest change like being now the bad guy of DC (also that it will be against what Batman represents, you can made the anti-Batmen like Owlman, AzBat, Prometheus, Batman Who Laughs, now Zur-En-Arrh Failsafe, etc. Because those characters were created for that purpose, but not the prime Batman), Batman could develop more with his interactions with his family (like what is happening in Batman and Robin, in Nightwing, one day with Tim, maybe he can reconciliace again with Jason and possible DC remembers that Cass is also his adoptive daughter, so they could have interactions again) or another heroes. Batman is in his prime when he's a detective resolving crimes and combating his villains, but that external conflict is also that affects him very personaly. I think the main problem with Zdarsky's run is that this odyssey that we're reading doesn't feel completely like a Batman's story because the story is focused in changing and fixing the status quo for Batman and answering a lot of questions like the three Jokers or the Batman's contingency plan, maybe in the future his mansion, money and possibly Alfred will come back. But the main Batman's tropes are missing a lot here, specially now.

This is exactly what was going on in the Superman books during Doomsday/Funeral for a Friend/Reign of the Supermen. The Justice League was Guy, Fire, Ice, and Bloodwyn. Supergirl was a metamorph working for Lex. Luthor was young and spry pretending to be his own son. And the Cyborg Superman's secret origin was a Mr. Fantastic knock off villain of the week. I was given very little to go on, but the story grabbed me and I rolled with the punches and filled in the gaps on my own. What's wrong with that?

How to write a good plot: Take 1 aspect of your protagonist, and either make a villain to counter it; Stoicism countered by Joker, sobriety countered by Bane, Pacifism countered by Red Hood, etc. Or better yet, make a villain equal to an aspect; Cold calculation becomes Mr.Freeze, dual personalities becomes Two-Face. Fear tactics becomes Scarecrow. Yada yada. Recent plots.... nothing worth talking about. Just disconnected tropes like multiverses & robot doppelgangers, or repetition like even more split personalities & another dead parent.

One of the things I’ve always been surprised the comic industry (mostly looking at DC and Marvel) is that they keep one large continuity between not only multiple characters and eras, but writers, even within the same series. This leads to so many issues where any development from one writer isn’t followed through or basically retconned. While I would like things to be done with indie series or other visual stories like manga or webtoons, where there’s one writer, they probably won’t ever change their overall structure. But what they could do to adapt their style is make it like a tv series, where you have a writer/writers that write the whole story, but multiple people throughout actually make it. Like each episode in a show is directed by someone different in Mandolarian for example. That could be done for Spider-Man. Someone writes the overall story, and throughout it, different artist and writers take over to adapt it

It’s a paradox. How much change can fans tolerate before they start clamoring for what came before? Yes, the onus is on the writers to get creative (which is easier said than done) but Batman fans can get pretty rabid as well. So we get changes to the Bat mythos which end up changing Batman himself only tangentially but may be big for the mythos at large. That way, the mythos grows but Batman stays unchanged. At least, we get a new Batsuit and symbol every few years. Kind of same for Superman.

I truly think the biggest Wasted Opportunity in Batman's Lore was not keeping The Red Hood as a Bad guy. Listen,i love Jason Todd's red hood. He is my favorite Batfamily member. But i truly think the Under The Hood movie is the Greatest example of a Villian that could be created to Truly evolve Batman. A villian that challenged Batman's no Killing rule,his Obsession with the Joker,and his No killing rule being turned into a legitimate weakness in Batman's character when it comes to the Criminals he lets live in the wake of their Massive Collateral Damage.

You know what we need a video who is more overused Batman or Spiderman. I know someone will say Spiderman is easily overused but let's really think about this. There are a lot of animated and live action Batman movies and there muliple shows where a Batman related character is the star. Does anyone remember Batman's car got its own series?

That's the issue. They either focus on Batman only, or on aspects of Batman no one asked for instead of giving us a true next Gen version of the Batfamily. Legitimately one of the most famous Teams in DC history and the fact that Nightwing is primarily only known his butt as opposed to being the guy to take Bruce Wayne's place on the Justice league. Don't get me started on that Batgirl movie that got canceled. And I say the worst of them all was the dumb ass show called Gotham. This show so badly feels like they want to do a Young Bruce Wayne/ Batman Origin Story but they want to cram in all of the famous faces like Joker and penguin before Batman ever is supposed to appear.

growing up with the modern stoic batman, going back to watch the ats was a breathe of fresh air. Their is a whole other layer that recent batman refuse to acknowledge. Im not saying for it to be campy but allow batman to show more emotion

The problem is DC it self, the way they see batman as just a miserable human that has to fight life itself and without any help from anyone they don’t want a healthy character development because it won’t sell as much, the stories have to be about who can break the bat more, the comic world is just all over the place to the point where I can’t really understand a story (especially batman comics) without a comic odious like yours. "Batman can't change too drastically!" - that pretty much sums up everything wrong that is being given to us, but how about what we are asking? I see as the other part of the fault ourselves, "The Hand" that keeps asking and doesn't want to change the status quo. I think Batman doesn't evolve because we don't let it and it wouldn't sell otherwise.

Ive literally been saying this for years Ever since injustice and Damians Inception as a character Batmans flaws have been shining. The problem is they are trying to appease the general audience and story by keeping it the same They need to change and keep it. It's literally the SAME problem as spiderman These characters build up past their issues and trauma and build a life and people to mentor but they keep Resetting the DAMN STORY. PETER should be 35-40 And miles late teens maybe 20s I enjoy Robbie Reyes

I wish Miles was in his late teens or early to mid 20s by now, and Peter was finally a dad and pushing late 30s to early 40s. But we can't get that at all because people don't like change. And it's unfortunate that we still have to face OMD being in affect, because that's the reason why Peter's *still* stagnant at the moment. Because Peter has been regressing backwards and backwards for 17 years, Miles is the most affected by it because even though he's been learning, growing and changing as a person in his 616 runs (especially Ziglar at the moment) he won't be able to advance any further because of Peter shortcomings. Peter needs to start progressing as a character again, so both him and Miles can be amazing together, and so Marvel can finally stop putting Peter in a box where he has to suffer for no reason or just be a dick and get away with it.

@@johnthai6188Like Dick Grayson when he became Batman? I honestly believe that Miles *will* become the Wally West of this generation and he really has in a lot of ways. But I mean this for the comics, he's been growing and self reflecting a lot in his recent run and it's been great to see him get amazing character development. But I feel like the only way Peter can retire is if we see him grow up, become a dad, have one last fight with Norman and realize that being Spider-Man will take time away from his family and then he'll pass it on to Miles fully. Like to me the reason Spider-Girl worked so well is because Peter was retired and had a legacy to leave behind in MayDay. We have that opportunity again in Miles, even better since he's still figuring stuff out himself and has a lot of room to grow and he can move Peter forward as a character. What I'm saying is that it's time for Peter to grow up again and go the Peter B. route and let Miles take over fully. But that's a big change for Spider-Man fans and it isn't something everyone will be happy with like you said, and I agree that a lot of people would be furious.

This is the overall problem with writing for modern superheroes. You can't veer away too far from the status quo. Any sort of changes will always have a chance of being retracted or written off or, in most cases, forgotten. Especially in cases where a character is written by multiple people that each have their own bottomlines for the characters. It's why comic book storylines in the main continuities are so inconsequential. Characters have to stay as they are no matter what.

But isn't this the curse of the long runners? Shorter comics have development, permanent change and payoffs because they end. Long runners by definition can't change. If you want Batman, Superman or wonderwoman to last, they can't change too much...or the product becomes too different.

Batman is literally what the directors of Spiderverse is against right now. Storywriters who don’t let their characters grow or change positively. Makes sense considering they originally were gonna make a Batman beyond movie which likely would’ve made Bruce change

As much as Batman is my favorite suoerhero, his core message being turing your pain into something good for yourself and others, I don't want to have a life like his, completely consumed by an unachievable mission. This is why Grant Morrison's Batman remains my favorite Batman run story of all time, the story of a man who trascends physical, spiritual, and mental boundaries, taking down evil gods and work alongside mighty beings, but his story and battle are neverending, and, rather than cheer on, it's something to think about, because we're talking about a man who, despite turning his trauma into a force of good, he is obsessed with evil, like a fanatic.

I’m hoping to introduce my nephew to Batman (my favourite “super”hero) shortly. I’m kinda glad he’s the same Batman as I knew growing up; will make explaining him a lot easier (for me!) and hopefully allow us to enjoy the new material - though not 4 books at the same time- that’s mental, together. But I am sorry it doesn’t work for you. What I love about Bruce Wayne is though, that intransigence, it means we can hate the Jean-Paul Valley Batman, and root for him (Bruce) when we get a battle for the cowl in Knightfall etc.

I feel Batman is who he is. Making changes to his character would be making him someone else. It is like how Twilight attempted to take the Dracula lore into a different direction by making the vampires be able to come out during the day but they glow instead of explode into ash. At that point, I considered them to be more like dark fairies then vampires. Batman should always be rich and a vigilante by night. If he kills vs not kill that is fine because the creators made that change during their life cycle but to go beyond that isn't Batman anymore or how Bill and Bob intended.

Not really part of this whole Batman thing, but the trope of Vampires being killed by sunlight wasn't original Dracula Lore at all and was in fact something first done for the 1922 movie Nosferatu. So honestly Twilight would be closer to original Dracula Lore by ignoring that whole killed by sunlight thing.

@@Prince__Teclis That is correct but Bram Stoker did state that Dracula could not be exposed to sunlight. So it is cannon to the lore. Nosferatu was just the first one to be caught out for a long period of time. I should have used a different comparison because I did not mean for this to delve into a conversation about vampires.

Batman and Superman are basically cops. The have missions day by day and each investigation is always different. Looking for a story with Batman and Superman were the continuity changes the characters over time. Is not what they were made to be. They dont get older. They are in their prime.
