Basically, to do Black Adam justice, you really need a series, not a movie. A movie has to appeal to the widest possible audience, so it has to be super-safe. A guy declaring himself to not be a hero while only actually killing incredibly evil people is as edgy as a blockbuster can really get. Black Adam is basically Super-Dexter, but Dexter could never be a blockbuster movie character, even if you gave him powers.

And since you gloss over it pretty quickly, I'd take the time to argue that the Skeleton Army is actually a much bigger problem then it appears. The reason being, that so much of the movie's running time has the Crown of Sabbac as a McGuffin, with multiple characters going on about how dangerous it is and how it absolutely needs to be kept out of the wrong hands. Heck, keeping the Crown out of the wrong hands is shown to be the one thing the feuding Black Adam, JSA, and Tomaz all agree on. So its built up as a pretty big deal. But when the bad guy gets the crown, and the demons who empower him command him to bring "Hell on Earth", what's the best he can do? A bunch of skeletons who are so utterly pathetic that random civilians (including folks who, let's be real, aren't exactly in great physical shape), are able to easily take them down with improvised weapons. In other words, the best this demon supervillain can do is call forth minions who are in every way WORSE than the minions he had as the head of Intergang. Where those guys were super technologically advanced and actually could keep Khandaq's people in line, the skeletons are utterly pathetic. Again, this may seem like a small point, but I don't think it is. I think it badly undercuts the threat posed by the villain and his McGuffin crown that (again) so many characters spent so much of the movie speaking fearfully of, if the worst that happens is we get some easily disposed of Skeletons. How is that bringing Hell on Earth? I feel like, in order to be worthy of that, and also to justify all the fear everyone had of this crown, there needed to be something way more formidable brought forwards.

Doesn’t the villain use the crown to become Sabbac? Sure, the zombie dudes were lame, but considering that Sabbac killed Dr. Fate, and was on par with Black Adam (or perhaps even stronger than him since BA needed Hawkman’s help, and Hawkman needed Fate’s helmet), it still doesn’t undermine how dangerous the crown was.
@daniellauricella51322 жыл бұрын
@@sfkapacheoutlaw5348 It undermines it somewhat though. Because powerful supervillains are something that universe has seen before. The demons still commanded him to "bring Hell on Earth" and in that he failed spectacularly. So I still think it's a problem with the movie's climax.

In terms of Black Adam comic lore, this movie leans far more heavily into early 2000's stuff and The New 52, which makes sense since those 2000's books were the most recent comics coming out around the time The Rock was cast as the character so that was probably always a loose framework for him and where the JLA stuff comes from, and then the New 52 was just obvious since Shazam! as a movie was a more polished (and better) version of those early New 52 Shazam backup stories in Justice League, so I kinda just assumed Adam would draw from that source material too (although thankfully not as much, I'm sorry I hate harping on it I just really freaking dislike Geoff Johns Shazam so much).

I remember regretting having gone to see Jumanji and felt sour for the first 10 minutes but the second he appeared I was entranced. His signature goofy smile is like a warm cup of hot chocolate. I think he has the same appeal that Jackie Chan and Eddie Murphy once brought. It would be nice to see him in better movies but almost all my favourite performances are the ones where he carries the entire film with his larger than life presence.

Funny, he doesn't carry Jumanji at all for me. The real star is Jack Black as Bethany. I do think though, that it's still one of the Rock's better roles. Although mostly because of the opposite of your reason, I think he's fun in a role where he plays a nerdy kid in a brawny body, it's fun to see him contradict his physical traits like that and it's an acting job he can manage. I was actually really impressed by the final episodes of Dwayne Johnson's show Ballers. Spoilers ahead, but for a show that was the Coors' Light of TV shows, for Dwayne Johnson to make himself the villain of his own series took guts. You didn't have to commit to that and the show would have ended fine. But, he went for it and we finally got to see how bad he's been on everybody else and much happier every character was without him. I think part of why I enjoyed this movie as much as I did is that the filmmakers seemed to know that they didn't have a strong enough story to have characters sitting around discussing the plot for ten minutes, or a drawn out night-before-the-battle sequence or a whole bunch of comedic fish-out-of-water scenes when Black Adam first awakens, so they don't do any of that and instead keep their foot on the gas when it comes to the action.

The film should have been set in the late 1940s due to the fact that the JSA are golden age heroes and Black Adam should have just been the true villian of the entire movie not some another redeeming anti hero. I think a big part of why actual action movies are out of favour with Hollywood audiences now is because of wrestlers becoming a thing. Everybody blames superhero movies for dumbing shit down but I think Fast and the Furious is more to blame. Superhero movies just killed it off. Guys like the Rock spent their entire lives relying on camera tricks to sell it to the audience. I do think this is one of Johnson's better movies. A big part of that is the other characters in the movie. I'm really happy to see Aldis Hodge and Sarah Shahi get cast in a big movie. I didn't expect much from Pierce Brosnan as Dr Fate but somehow him just standing there looking the part half the time managed to do it.

Well, the first problem was casting someone who can't act in the role of Black Adam. With a few exceptions, you're always better off casting a lesser known actor so the CHARACTER shines and the actor's celebrity doesn't water it down. All I see is the Rock dressed UP like Black Adam; I don't see Black Adam. Henry Cavill as Superman is a perfect example of an actor WHO CAN ACT, but whose celebrity doesn't take away from his character being the main focus.
@pablorosada97882 жыл бұрын
The way I see it, this is a movie that originally was only about Teth Adam himself, but got all of the Justice society and intergang stuff thrown in because the studio wanted to build up future properties and the writers didn't know how to write a movie just about Adam. His story was very interesting to me. The fact that he was someone who never asked for what he got and lost everything in the process is managed in a way that was very intriguing and challenging to me, especially the way they handle the twist of him not actually being the "chosen one" at all, and the way his people wanted him to be not being at all who he was. I wanted to see THAT movie, I wanted to explore THAT story deeper, but it was only like a third of the whole thing. The justice society stuff was not too bad per se, but it felt completely disconnected to Adam, and it felt like it was only relevant to Adam because the movie says so and no other reason. Like it belonged to a completely separate movie. And because of that, I simply couldn't bring myself to care about them at all. And I personally had a problem with the musical score, not because it was bad or anything, but because it just NEVER STOPPED. Almost the entire movie has music blaring at full volume in the background, and with the already visually packed scenes that it kept putting up, the entire thing ended up being an assault to the senses that diminished even the better parts of the movie. And everything about intergang was so generic and bland that I forgot what the bad guys were called 2 seconds after they stopped saying it. Overall, I was most worried about Dwane Johnson's performance prior to seeing this movie, particularly because he hasn't really shown his acting abilities the way someone like John Cena has. But it turns out he did a great job, and managed to explore all of the character's nuances and conflicts through acting alone much better than even the script could. I just wish we got more of that instead of what we actually got.

It´s not the greatest superhero movie, but like Mandalorian, the genre and franchise has been so damaged I´ll take it. So what if it´s a bit formulaic? I´ll take the formula over trash every day of the week, like I´d take a McDonalds burger over dog crap on the ground.
