The PROBLEM with DC's Trinity

Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are titled as DC's Trinity, the three biggest characters of the Justice League. They are almost synonymous with any Justice League roster that includes the likes of The Flash, Aquaman, and Green Lantern. However, it seems as if adaptations surrounding these characters are very one-sided, with Batman himself or Batman-adjacent characters like Harley Quinn getting an overabundance of screen time as of late. Superman had been shafted in media for a long time, but there seems to be a resurgence in the character with the upcoming DCU by James Gunn and My Adventures with Superman. Writers struggle with what to do with Wonder Woman, so much of her mythos remains unexplored in media. The Trinity's dynamic should be very friendly and almost sibling-like, which is one of the reasons the DCEU Zack Snyder films never worked as intended.

Also remember that back in the 1940's DC had more of a Big 6/7/8 Book thing going and had two sets of Big 3's due to them being two companies. (The Big 8 were of course Action, Detective, Adventure, More Fun, Sensation, Star-Spangled, Flash and All-American while the popular team-up books were Leading Comics and All-Star Comics and Ollie & Arthur's anthology book is the oldest DC title...originally titled New Fun, but it became More Fun when Dr. Occult showed up.) Superman, Batman and Robin/Nightwing were the Big 3 on the National Periodical Publications side (DC proper) and on the All-American Publications it was Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern...when the JSA got banned in 1951 however we learned that only 5 main heroes and two sidekicks were allowed to remain active. The Surviving 5? Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow and Aquaman so DC dropped from a long range of titles in 1951 to just six main books before giving Superman an additional two. Flash and GL just got a benefit-boost in 1956 and 1959 respectively and the same happed to the Atom and Hawkman in the early 60's as well. Robin and Speedy (Nightwing and Arsenal ver.) just happened to hang around because they were popular sidekicks.

Furthermore...the episode you mentioned...Diana mentions she had already forgiven her before that point, if anything Batman was the one who it took the longest. The vote did end up as Wally & J'onn- yes Diana & Bruce- no John- abstained because she's the flying yellow weakness for him. Clark- I'm gonna let Wally have this one...after being unsure initially, but remembering that his girlfriend Lois Lane and Pal Jimmy Olsen gave him a chance after somebody decide to let his "darkseid" out. Diana actually forgave her mid-fight in Starcrossed...saying "I should let you stay here, but I won't."- that's the first time we actually see Wonder Woman be comic accurate...Diana Prince may not be the type to give second chances, but Wonder Woman does...because ultimately, Hawkgirl was still Justice League when push came to shove...she knew Wally was right...even if he's a bit impulsive...but not nearly to the extent his cousin is. Interestingly one could say that the whole JL/U series sub-theme? Wally's most likely right.

I really do get their idea on why they're trying so hard with how much she sells but I just can't dig it man. For decades we've had so many iconic stories and fun adaptations of heroes like the Flashes, Green Lanterns, Aquaman even, and Hawkgirl's popularity was skyrocketed thanks to the DCAU. They have so many options if they were to ever want to focus on a fourth pillar, with so many choices for the first 2 as well, but there's so much harley nowadays, it's crazy. I like her, she's great, but ain't no way, not a singular way do I ever want her to be a choice above Barry or Hal or Wally or John or even J'onn. The problem with the trinity is; one is over-exploited and milked to the extreme; the other is adequately used, but also often either the butt of jokes, misinterpreted or written down as overrated, ironically; and the third isn't cared about at all, except for the brief moments when the adequate creator gives her a chance to shine, which sadly, doesn't last long.

I often find it frustrating that Guy Gardner is depicted as the "Jerk" lantern. Yeah he is rough that's for sure but he has solid pathos coming from a broken home, dealing with physical abuse, becoming a social worker that wants to help criminals rehabilitate and fit back into society. Yet, 9 times outta 10 some writer comes in and is like "nah he the dumb angry one though". It really sucks when certain characters get attached to certain aspects. - Batman being overly paranoid instead of just cautious. Or the idea he is a loner when he has more supporting sidekicks then any hero ever. - Plastic Man is a buffoon despite him being former CIA and was actually more straight lace in the creation of Jack Cole's era, the man who created him. - Lobo is a dumb meathead even though Lobo is not only a genius in multiple fields of science but his character works great as a commentary on real life events, but then any writer who comes on bored is illiterate when it comes to satire. Again, it sucks that certain writers get saddles with certain attributes. Ya notice no one brings up Hal being a pedo. But anytime Deathstroke shows up how do ya not compare him to Sgt. Hatred, haha.

Netherrealm Studios aimed for the laziest possible story: Superpowered Superman becomes the bad guy, Batman stays the hero, and for some reason Wonder Woman is Lady Macbeth. REALLY not helping is DC keeps changing pretty much everything about her and yet to say what of her mythos is rock solid and unchangeable: Two different origins (formed from clay on Paradise Island than given life and blessed by the Olympians or daughter of Zeus), Amazons flip flopping between being peacekeepers to straight up vile misandrists, her relationship with Steve changing between lovers to friends to a sorta father-daughter bond, what powers she has, etc.

I thought Rise of the Olympian was Wonder Woman’s version of Knightfall and Death of Superman. She goes up against a twisted and evil version of herself called Genocide and she beats her nearly to death and wreaks havoc everywhere while Zeus is creating a new warrior race called The Olympians which he killed a fellow god in order to create them in Wonder Woman’s name and then she denounces Zeus and is forced to leave the Amazons because of that.

The problem is that Wonder Woman has never sold. As much as people complain that she doesn’t get enough opportunities on videos like these, even her best runs have never sold well. Batman and to a lesser extent Superman are so far above her in popularity and comic interest that I think it’s hard to justify her getting animated movies / TV shows.

I think a part of the reason Batman gets so much more adaptations compared to Superman and Wonder Woman is this idea that Batman is the more realistic and grounded superhero to a lot of people, he's the ultimate power fantasy, he's a "normal" dude that became a superhero through hard work and dedication. Superman is typically viewed as the superhero for children, the dude with all the powers that allow him to do practically anything, compared to that Batman is the "mature" hero, the "grown up" hero compared to Superman. It's stupid but that's probably the reason. And then there's Wonder Woman, created to be a feminist icon but due to feminism being a fairly complex topic it leads to writers having different interpretations on how Wonder Woman should be in order to best represent female empowerment. Almost every time a new writer writes a Wonder Woman comic it feels like you're reading a different comic featuring a different characrer despite it supposedly still being Wonder Woman. Out of the trinity, she's probably the one that has changed the most drastically over the years. Also, I shall accept the challenge of naming 8 Wonder Woman villains that aren't Ares or Cheetah: 1: Circe 2: Giganta 3: Silver Swan 4: Doctor Psycho 5: Doctor Cyber 6: Doctor Poison 7: Queen Clea 8: Red Panzer If we're talking about Wonder Woman stories similar to Death of Superman and Knightfall, the closest is The Contest which happened in that era where Hippolyta heard a prophecy that Wonder Woman would die, so she created a new contest to choose a new Wonder Woman to prevent her daughter's death (she told no one this btw) and rigged it so Artemis would win, leading to her becoming Wonder Woman for a short time before dying as prophesized. Wonder Woman has some great stories but none of them are really "iconic". Most of the time when people talk about Wonder Woman's stories they'll typically be talking about the overall run instead of individual stories, like you'll hear people talk aboutthe George Perez run, the Greg Rucka run, the Gail Simone run, etc, but the actual stories, not really.

WW being underrated by DC itself is a freaking CRIME. Part of the Trinity having sense is that the three are important: Batman: More terrenal and "realistic" (Crime mafias, Police and detectives, Simply dangerous criminals and thugs) but with kind of some weird cases like Poison Ivy or Clayface. Mr Freeze and Ra's Al Ghul are more "fantastical" but arr not too...they still are on the "science" side. Superman: More science fiction (robots, Aliens, Evil Corporations, galactic and even dimensional things). And Wonder Woman: More magical and even political (Gods, Godesses, Monsters, Sorcerers, Creatures, and some historical wars). The three are PILLARS of what the DC Universe is...even with others being in between or expansions...like Green Lantern being a more deeper space adventure...or Flash litterally being a middle point of Sups and Bats, with more police-like crime but with more sci-fi villains...more metahuman ones rather than just weird ones. Is part of balance.

Wonder Woman is precisely the balance between the morals of Batman and Superman, a heroine who is practically always showing her power not only by fighting, but with her kindness, that is sometimes as great as Superman's. DC in recent years has been sucking everything it can out of Batman, and he is an incredible character, but they are consequently relegating characters like the Martian Manhunter who has been pushed aside and doesn't even have the importance he once had in the comics, even cyborg who was put in his place is on the side lines and many others who could show their greatness. Hey bros before hoes. (joke/sarcasm) I mean it's makes sense some people get along with other people more than others. The only similarly superman and wonder woman have is that they have somewhat of the same morals and they are both godly powerful. While as batman and superman is such a dynamic between them. They have so many similarities and differences that makes you understand why they are the best of friends. They are both highly driven for the greater good, they are both essentially the leaders of the justice league with superman being the moral conpass while batman is the brains, and they are both dudes. But they also contrast each other really well with the both of they often covering for each other's weaknesses. Now while superman might not be dumb he is definitely dummer than batman. So batman is often the brains while superman is the brawn. Superman has more optimism while batman tends to be more cynical. Batman is rich while superman has reporter salary and whatever he gets from the justice league. They also just keep each other in check. Either batman is too cynical or superman is too optimistic and then they check one another. Additionally they believe if something goes wrong and if one of them went rogue for whatever reason, for the other person to take them down. Additionally they had so many adventures together where they have just built that trust and have that dynamic between them.

Movie idea for Wonder Woman: Basically a bunch of men are going missing both criminals and civilians while simultaneously an influx of pigs or some other animal have been reported as well. The movie is basically Circe hates men and is turning them into animals while under the guise of a feminist politician and WW has to both stop the men from disappearing and catch Circe without getting into legal trouble/public scrutiny. The ending has Circe getting exposed for her crimes then goes on a state wide rampage on all males(Children too). At the climax of the fight she sees the good in mankind after a boy/young man takes a hit for WW after she gets knocked unconscious to give her a fighting chance, starts seeing first responders/regular people(Both men and women) aiding those hurt by the collateral damage, and military(Mixed genders) helping WW as calvary while she recovers from her injuries(Circe is technically a demigod and witch so she's really powerful). In the final clash WW extends mercy but Circe declines and takes her life out of spite, thus reversing her magic but not the collateral damage. We have an epilogue with both genders working together to rebuild and we have a volunteer group under the name of the dead boy who saved WW dedicated to helping those in danger(It could be a cameo name or something, Steve Trevor maybe?). Roll credits.

The trinity always bogs down Wonder Woman. Superman actually benefits meaningfully with his bond to Batman. Wonder Woman always gets reduced to a love interest or has her lore turned to tatters for Batman or Superman. Look at Snyder trying to make amazons be reduced to kryptonians. Even current wonder woman comic been misogynistic AF in having it be more about Superman & Batman’s kids.

DC has a Duo: Batman and Superman. Wonder Woman had been big in the 70s and maybe 80s, but she'd already fallen far behind Batman and Superman long before DC decided to formally push her as part of the Trinity. If you ignore sex, equally strong arguments could be made for a number of characters other than her to take that third spot. Even if the Trinity has to have a female member, Wonder Woman hasn't been the "biggest" DC female character for a while.

Not sure I can name 8. Circe, Devastation, Professor Poison, Genocide, I could chest and just say the Pantheon but I won’t count that, Eris, Giganta, Doctor Psycho, Silver Swan….eh think that’s all I got. But that could also be a problem with Wonder Woman books too. While she’s in the trinity, she also just flat out doesn’t sell well.

DC's pillars shouldn't have anything to do with The Trinity IF the Trinity can't sell. The trinity were the three super hero books DC continuously published throughout their starts in the "golden age" of comic books into the "silver age". They kept the company alive, moreover they kept the company in super heroes, which gave National/Detective/DC a leg up when the comics code came along and made it hard to write anything that wasn't superheroes. The "Trinity" is a historical designation. It's not changing. If the current pillars wind up being someone other than the Trinity, the Trinity won't lose their status as such. Historically speaking, yes, The Flash should hold a similar designation to the Trinity. The Flash spawned the DCU as we know it. If he gets his own title, his own historical designation, that's all well and good. If there are better characters to base the DC brand around TODAY though, then so be it. I get it, I don't care for Harley Quinn and her push. I don't even care for Batman, really so I'd certainly be open to seeing more of someone else. If there's an argument that DC's leaving money off the table not doing whatever, fine. But Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman aren't going to stop being DC's Trinity regardless of what is done today or tomorrow. That status has been all but etched in stone.
