There are a lot of problems, some smaller ones really like the weird autotuning over her voice and the disappointing costumes. But the biggest for me was Belle. Belle in the animated version felt like a small town girl who dreamed of bigger things even though her neighbors don't understand why. Live action Belle felt like the big city girl who has to move to a small town and is super judgmental and feels like she is better than the other girls in town, because she's "not like other girls because she reads". Which I think affected the chemistry. Animated Belle found a kindred spirit after basically being rejected and misunderstood by her town. Live action Belle was the one who seemed to be keeping people at a distance and judging them. Like right in the first song, animated Belle is positively ecstatic when someone talks to her and basically runs after him to tell him about her book only to get brushed off. Live action Belle is approached by someone and basically is the one to brush him off and walks away even though he is actually listening to her and still asking her questions after she has walked away. Animated Belle wanted to find a kindred spirit. She wanted the fairy tale adventure. Live action Belle just wanted out. (Also live action Belle didn't feel like a romantic at all to me, she felt like the type that would watch the Titanic and be like, "that was dumb, he could have fit on the door too. Also, why toss the necklace. Couldn't she have gotten closure from selling it or donating it?") Like animated Belle was a daydreamer, head in the clouds type who was misunderstood because she wanted more but would have spent her whole life in that small town daydreaming about it rather than acting on it if fate hadn't intervened in the form of a storm and a rose. Live action was basically Hermione, practical and pragmatic, judging the town because they didn't want more, and she absolutely would have left as soon as she could after coming up with an invention to sell or plan to support herself. Plus animated Belle bonding with Beast by teaching him to read (after first reading him Romeo and Juliet while he watches dreamily before asking her to read it to him again) was a much cuter bonding scene than him scoffing at her liking Romeo and Julie in the live action.

Interesting fact: apparently it’s not actually autotuned at all. They were going for live singing rather than recording it in the studio to lip-sync to (Les Mis had just come out and made this popular), but they didn’t plan well and had to mash up clips as well as audio, which in turn made it sound awful (as if it were autotuned)

and also the fact that in the animated film, beast showed belle his library because he knew that she loved reading, but in the live action he only showed her his library so that he could brag about how many things he owned.
@kaya119
@kaya119 Жыл бұрын
@@carlmclaggne Exactly. It wasn't him trying to make her happy/do something nice. It was kind of snobby and pretentious. And part of why it was sweet in the animated version is because he went in with the intention of wanting to make her happy, so even though he literally couldn't gift her a place she already would have had full access to it if she had wandered the castle and found it herself (or asking someone), him showing her to make her happy and trying to connect with her was part of the gift. Taking that away and having it be a weird flex that he's a snob who judges what limited access she has had to books, and then kind of casually allowing her to use the library, which she technically had access to, she just didn't know it was there, takes away from the gift.

Lol when Belle was singing and you said “She sounds not so bad, but there’s something weird there” it’s the dang autotune. I’m no musical genius and I can still hear it 😭 No offense to Emma, can’t they just find an actress who can sing well if they’re making a musical.

Same, it really took me out of the experience that they used autotune for Emma's singing (nothing wrong with her acting and I love her, just don't like the producers decisions). Why didn't they use a singer that has a similar sounding (singing) voice for Emma's singing parts? They do it for animated movies/series, why not live action?
@camelliabell9046
@camelliabell9046 2 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't think Emma singing would have been bad enough to require all the auto-tune that they use. Had they left it fairly natural, it would have sounded much better. And then when it came out the producer tried to say that they hadn't used any auto-tune at all, and I remember making a comment about it under one of the soundtrack music videos when it first came out, and I had people actually trying to fight me over It, saying that I was insulting an amazing producer by questioning what he had said 😂 like literally it's so obvious that there was auto-tuned use, I don't even know how it was an argument

@@camelliabell9046 Yeah I think you're right. Maybe Emma just couldn't hit the high notes of the songs and the producer just "helped" her out or something. Some people really don't have good hearing. Or they just don't want their favorite actress being "attacked" by a stranger on the internet. Like hello? What will forever irk me about this movie are the horrible choices Emma Watson made that shouldn’t even been hers. Refusing to wear historical undergarments in a historical movie because „cORseTs aREn‘T feMiNIsT“ when a) she actually would’ve worn stays and not a corset anyway b) the corset was a normal, comfortable and necessary clothing item (and were usually NOT used to thighten the waist excessivly - yes, history documentaries lied to you) c) sewing and design was pretty much the only female dominated trade during the time, helping women make an independent living for themselves without men‘s help - peak feminism She refused to learn anything about the historical fashion and instead decided to command the costume department to make Belles dress without the necessary structure. Therefore, it’s floppy and doesn’t move the way it’s supposed to during the dance scenes. All because a popular actress was on an ignorant power trip. Other changes included scenes and dialogue to „make it more empowering and more comfortable to play“. Which I find ridiculous, because Emma was hired to act, not character design or scriptwrite. If you don’t like the character, let someone else play it. (Also the fact that her voice was so heavily autotuned for all the songs makes it a bit uncanny for me, but well, not a lot of popular actors can sing so well I guess. It did really stand out against all the natural performers in the movie overall though.)

I will agree with you on that. While I DO prefer the original over this version of Beauty and the Beast, I WILL SAY that this version is one of the better live action remakes that Disney has come up with. The casting, overall, is excellent....especially for Gaston and Maurice. I DO like the songs they added (especially Celine Dion's How Can A Moment Last Forever. Its beautiful. The ending legit made me CRY in the theater when my friend and I saw it. The only complaints I have for the movie is they didn't give Belle's mother a name (I have always wondered about that. It was a beautiful moment and they should have given her a name and the way they gave the Beast's MOST IMPORTANT LINE (confessing that he loves Belle) to Mrs. Potts. Yes, the Evermore song was beautiful. It was a heartfelt scene. But he should have said the line. Its a crucial moment in the story and the Beast's character arc. He has to learn to love another and earn her love in return or he'll be doomed to remain a Beast forever. HE MAKES THAT SACRIFICE....choosing to let Belle go to save her father, KNOWING that this was the price he would pay. He says he loves her and that's why he let her go. That's why he was willing to change for her. Which makes the ending all the more perfect when she loves him too.

When first saw this movie I thought it was good, but when I saw it for a second time a lot of things really bothered me: 1. Emma Watson can't sing, there's a lot of notes that is clearly auto tune and comparing with the other ones is a big difference, also has no chemistry with beast so the end doesn't feel natural. 2. The banana yellow babydoll dress with no structure IS SO BAD in this context, basically because all of the others characters are in period costumes except her. 3.They clearly tried to replicate the original movie even in dialoge but in a completely different context so the lines seem really odd, also bullying belle because she teaches a girl to read is extremely weird when the story takes place in one of the few eras when almost every one was encouraging reading 🤔 Maybe I'm a little biased because beauty and the beast is one of my favorites disney animated movies. So a lot of things were brought up already, but I just wanted to add some. 1. In the original, the Beast gives his enormous coolest library as a gift to Belle, bc he wants to do smth for her. In the remake, he 's just being mean and bragging to Belle (perfect way to a woman's heart - criticize her hobbies and the things she likes, tell her you have better ones!) 2. They completely changed Belle's character. In the original, Belle was sweet, soft and caring, while she liked reading the stories about adventures, fights and magic. In the remake she HITS LUMIERE and likes ROMEO AND JULIET. WTF? P.S. Glad to see, that a year later, he's still Edward to you :))

tbf Romeo and Juliet has a lot of fighting in it, and her liking Romeo and Juliet could be a hint in general to her liking Shakespeare's work, which happens to include a lot of adventures, fights and magic. and in the remaster of the animated version they have a scene where Belle and the Beast are bonding over reading Romeo and Juliet together, so it's probably a nod to that

I think the problem with this is they got everything that made the original good and just completely twisted it. Belle fell in love with the beast naturally, not even knowing he was a man that got transformed. In this she knows about the curse. The townspeople were weirded out by Belle, but never were mean to her. In this they publicly shame her, which made their redemption at the end even weirder. Gaston was a popular, mean guy. At the end, he got the mob by his side because everyone looked up to him. In this the townspeople don't really respect him (LeFou pays them to sing in the Gaston song) and even give Maurice the benefit of the doubt when he accuses Gaston. That just makes him less compelling as a villain. And as a whole there were just little bad details that made the whole thing miserable. The awful dress, the half assed "feminist" improvements on Belle's character, the poorly explained power of the magic book, the shameless queer baiting with LeFou, the absence of chemistry between the actors and many other things. They tried to make the original "better", but made it worse by not deeply understanding what made the original so good: it was a love story. Not a story about Belle's mom, about LeFou being in the closet, about the Enchantress or the furniture's families. Belle and the Beast didn't get enough time to develop organically as a couple. Also the Beast is a total asshole in this even by the end of the movie lol

But with those, they aren't remaking the same movie, it's different script and settings and such. With Disney, it's the exact same story and concept and characters, yet they still fail to capture the original concept such as story beats, character motivations, why certain scenes were put into the story and when and why that matters. No hate on her behalf, I respect her for trying, but genuinely they could have done a much better job with casting Belle. They casted multiple Broadway actors that have sung and have experience. I remember seeing the film in theaters when I was younger and finding it quite boring. Even with everything being all glitter and glam it did not appeal. I myself have a natural sense when it comes to music. I am also trained in music, and listing to her sing was awful. The robotic sound to her voice hurts so much. No vibrato at all. The reason this Beauty and the Beast fails is, in my eyes, they said "well we've already got the story, we just convert it to live action" and went and breezed through filming the important stuff. Then they realized "oh shoot, we still need like thirty minutes of footage to fill out the timestamp." So they added some subplots that don't really go anywhere to pad the timer. This results in the important bits of the movie feeling rushed, while other parts feel stretched out, and the pacing whiplash throws you for a loop. That's my interpretation anyway.

My blood boils like lava throughout this entire movie because you can just hear the autotune with Emma Watson. The best singers by far were Dame Emma Thompson and Audra McDonald. They saved the movie. Emma has the sweetest most beautiful voice for singing lullabies. I could fall asleep to her voice. And Audra.....she is a powerhouse. Not only can she hit high notes but her voice is just so powerful that she could break windows. Her vibrato is so incredible. I hated the way they made the wardrobe look, they made the wardrobe super super scary looking. If I were Belle I would have just passed out on the spot. Which is such a bummer because Audra did an amazing job. Dan Stevens did a good job with his singing but I just hate everything about the Beast especially the way the animators chose to make him look. And the Beast is way less sympathetic in this version. Take for example the scene where Belle takes her father's place as a prisoner and the Beast sends him away. When we come back to Belle in her little cell in the animated version, it's the BEAST who chooses on his own to let Belle out of the tower and give her a nice bedroom to stay in. And when he walks into the cell and sees her crying you can see the look on his face that he already feels bad for Belle and deep down knows what he's doing is wrong. The Beast is so emotional in the animated version and you can see his emotions on his face whether it's sadness, guilt, happiness or anger. In this version the Beast is just nothing but a jerk and shows absolutely no guilt or remorse for what he's doing to Belle. And the animators were super lazy because you can't even see the Beast's feelings on his face. Even towards the middle of the story when he's happier he barely even smiles. And going back to that scene, in this version it's Lumiere and Cogsworth who offer Belle a bedroom instead of the Beast. It makes a huge difference because in the animated version with the Beast making that offer, it's the first time he shows us that there is in fact goodness in him. And in the animated version the Beast actually speaks his feelings even in the beginning before he becomes a better person. He admits that he thinks Belle is beautiful and that she could never wants someone like him, He voices his sadness that Belle will always see him as a monster, and before the library scene we don't just get him doing this for Belle out of freaking nowhere like this new version. We see him admitting what's in his heart, that he's never felt this way about anyone (a line that still warms my heart to this day) and says blatantly that he wants to do something nice for her. I can't criticize Dan's acting because he is a great actor and did the best he could with such a terrible script and such a terrible role to play. And after the Beast saves Belle from the wolves we get to see them argue and see Belle really showing the Beast who's boss but we also get to see Belle actually thanking the Beast for saving her while tending to his wounds. The Beast being surprised at someone showing him kindness and something he did actually being appreciated because all he ever does is hurt people. There is so much to love about the animated version and so much to hate about this one. Mostly because they took away everything we loved about the original.

I absolutely hated the remake and I think the original animated movie was great. My problems are 1. This movie has a lot of scenes and dialogue copied and pasted from the original movie, and the stuff it does add makes no sense or unneeded. Like do we care about happened to Belle’s mom. 2. A lot of the acting and singing isn’t all that great. Especially from Waston she can’t sing well and her acting is okay in this movie.Speaking of 3. Beast and Belle have no chemistry like every scene they have together they just yell and bicker at each other. 4. They made the sorceress lady look like a villain. And don’t get me the original she wasn’t all that great but a least she didn’t break into the castle and get upset for being asked to leave. And there were people gonna be like “just forget about the original and judge it for what it is” No! The original was special it was part of the Disney renaissance and it was the first animated movie to be nominated for best picture. You’re just be “forget about the original” I can’t you’re reminding me of it right now! Do I hate all remakes, no. I like 101 Dalmatians remake. Yeah I know I’m weird.

As someone who grew up loving the animation beauty and the beast and I watched the live action when it first came out and yeah I did like it because it was nostalgic. But watching it in 2020 again I notice how it isn't like the animation and how they did belle dirty by making her more "girl boss" and not a strong girly girl which she is. I didn't like how Emma changed most things about belle. I also didn't like that they made the villagers hate belle becsuse she read , that's not why they don't like her. They didn't like her because she was odd, she's in her own world, not talking to others and she is smart for a girl back in the day, that's why she was odd. Because they were intimated by her intelligence. But I did like their new songs, they were bops mostly "evermore". It's fine if you like this movie, this is only my opinion, I'm happy if you enjoy this movie 💛💙 Edit - I will the think I did like about this movie is seeing the furniture dying because that was emotional as fuck, and at the end when the beas who is human now growls because belle saod something about missing him being a beast. That was the best scene 10/10 foe that scene. 2/10 overall for the movie

And looking back now just before I start watching this video, there were only TWO things about this movie I loved, and that was "Evermore," and my striking realization when the credits hit that Ewan McGregor played Lumiere, because despite my love of him, and knowing his singing from Moulin Rouge, I did not realize it was him. Everything else in this film I actually like, except how horrendously they autotuned Emma Watson to the point where she sounds the same with no emotion no matter what she sings. The autotuned on Beast I get for the beastly growl. But Luke Evans is noticeably the best singer simply because he's no autotuned...but he's also just a good singer all around and kills the role.

The library in town is pretty accurate because books in those times took time to make and not mass produced as they are nowadays. Beast and Gaston both needed better actors, the ones playing them are great actors just not meant for Gaston and Beast. Gaston’s actor should’ve been someone beefy like Henry Cavill, a wrestler body because in the animation Gaston was jacked up. He could lift three girls on a bench up with one arm. Beast okay the prince could be a little thinner because as a beast his muscles and appearance would be bigger and once he transformed he may lose some of that muscle but not like Hulk vs Banner muscle difference. Overall I don’t hate this version of B&B but it is not my favorite. I have read at least ten books versions seen a variety of film adaptations of B&B so I treated this film as not an adaptation of an animated but instead as a new adaptation. My favorite B&B continues to be a book version of tale which I really wish there was a movie adaptation of Robin McKinley’s Beauty.

Disclaimer: I think the animated Disney classic is leagues beyond the live action, however there are a few things the live action did well compared to the rest of the live action remakes. One being the Beast himself Many people who are just in love with the animated HATED the changes they made to the Beast in the live action, not taking into consideration a few factors. Here's why the animated Beast works: In this version, Adam (I don't care if his name isn't technically canon, that's what I call him) was cursed as an 11 year old. He was young, perhaps parentless, wasn't taught how to properly engage with people or how to treat women. Therefore, the way the romance works when he meets Belle is that she is able to help him become a man (both in terms of his humanity and his adulthood). She shows him the love and guidance he never had. Now here's why the live action Beast works: In this one, Adam is cursed as an adult. He was sophisticated, always surrounded by women, and he ran his kingdom however he wanted. He knew what treating people with decency looks like, he just didn't care. With the maturing factor out of the equation, what exactly could Belle and the Beast bond over? On the surface, there's not much difference between him and Gaston. That's where the sophistication comes into play. Since this Beast grew up in luxury as a prince with a father, he was educated and well-spoken. What is Belle's only passion? Books! In the animated, the books come into play because Beast gifted her a library as a thank you and he liked listening to her read, she even helped him read. This more intelligent Beast can actually have conversations with her about the books. He liked listening to her read too, not because he's never had someone read to him before but because he hasn't heard someone read in a LONG time. Of the two, the live action Beast is actually probably the most faithful to the source material. Both romances were convincing. Each film utilized Adam's backstory differently and arranged the romances to reflect that. Again, as a movie I think the animated blows the live action out of the water, but I do give it credit for taking a different route.

Something sounds weird about her singing? THAT WILL BE THE EXCESSIVE AUTOTUNE!! They overused it so much that it removes all feeling & emotion from her voice. It ruined the film… that and the crappy & inaccurate costuming…

They missed HARD with the personality and character relationships, VERY BAD. There's no bonding, no chemistry, not much emotion to be honest.. at least most of the times and theres many yt vids that explain it better than me but bleeh

Im am such a big disney Fan. Always have been. And beauty and the beast was my absolute fav growing up. But still i prefer the newer one, it just feels more thought out and just as magical. And evermore IS SO GOOD. i also like lefou being more than just the mindless follower and his line "whos really the beast" is just mesmerizing!

"Evermore" was a better addition to this movie than "Speechless" was to Aladdin. My opinion but at least Evermore matched the tone of the rest of the soundtrack musically.

You have good instincts. They autotuned the hell out of Emma's voice which would be why it feels off. They honestly could've just let her sing it normally and it would've been fine. Good instincts about Agatha too. She is indeed the enchantress disguised as a spinster

The original was nominated for best picture (as in from all movies of the year) in oscars and pretty much single handedly caused them to add best animated picture to the list. It also won two oscars for music and score... Yeah let's remake this shit. We surely do a better job now...

They just tried really hard to please everyone instead of just making art for the sake of making art. I think that’s the difference

I don't like emma watson as belle, something just feels off. She's not made for roles like that.

This movie is horrendous. I don’t get the love for Evermore. It literally makes no sense and the auto tune is awful.
