Little fact about her discovering the wings are gone: Angelina Jolie said the scene was one giant metaphor for being violated. The drugging, the pain, realizing what happened, it's all right there. P.S. I'm only wording it as such to get past the censors.
@shinobu36172 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I hate that analogy. If you want to make a metaphor for being violated, in my opinion, what you see at face value should not be worse than what it's trying to be a metaphor of. As horrific and traumatizing as being violated in your sleep is, I'd find it way more horrific to be drugged and then wake up with TWO OF MY LIMBS AMPUTATED. And, besides the point, I also despise how SA or DV is constantly used over and over to justify a female villain. It's almost like saying "the only way for a female character to be a morally grey villain/anti-hero is if she's been through some sort of s3xual abvse". It's gross. So I am just going to completely ignore that BS they said about the wings, and just take it at face value.
@hana37032 жыл бұрын
@@shinobu3617 As far as I know, no one’s taking DV and SA to justify Maleficent’s action here even though it’s a metaphor for that, people still took it literally. I still took it literally (like Stefan cut her wings) but I can see what you’re saying. If you know “Teeth” that’s like the visual presentation of “She’s been through SA and she became a villain” that you were talking about. I’m actually tired of that type of reason for a female villain like we don’t need to feel bad about them, they could’ve just born to be an asshle and decided to fck with everyone like Regina George in “Mean girls”
@mischr132 жыл бұрын
@@shinobu3617 I don't know if you know this but, humans don't have wings, so no it's not like getting amputated. it'd be more like having a vestigial tail removed. also, if you didn't notice, she wasn't SA'd in the movie, she had her wings cut off. she wasn't morally gray cuz she's been through sexual abuse, she's morally gray cuz she had her wings cut off. seems like you have a hard time following basic concepts in kids movies, but it's ok, you don't HAVE to pick up on a theme. It is weird you're upset other people are talking about a particularly theme, especially since it means a lot to people who have been through what we're talking about and they were greatly moved by the analogy of assault feeling like having your wings cut off. But then, you'd need to have empathy to realize that sort of thing, which brings me to my last thing... I'd greatly appreciate it if you didn't say what SA does or doesn't feel like. you can't compare different kinds of pain like that, mental and physical, but if you HAD to, being SA'd is WAY worse than losing two limbs you don't need to get around or function in the slightest. Now go cry somewhere else

What I love about this is movie is that Maleficent's plan so perfectly unravels itself. The rules of magic are implied that the spell will work 100% by it's wording, as shown by the whispering of "no power on earth can change it" when she tries to revoke the curse. Maleficent plays herself by specifically stating in the wording of her spell that Aurora will be "Beloved by ALL who meet her." That's why she continues to care for and save Aurora as she grows up, and can't help but feel fond towards her. Anyone who meets Aurora, including Maleficent herself, will love her. The single inclusion of that phrase in the spell determined the course of the entire film and it was played off as a throwaway.

One character I feel absolutely terrible for was Aurora's actual mother. She only had at most a few months with Aurora when she was a baby and literally never saw her again. Her husband went completely mad and she didn't get to raise or even see her daughter before she died.

True, except the movie also quietly paints Aurora's actual mother as bad. She knew baby Aurora for "a few months" yet Aurora's own birth mother didn't have "true love" for her own daughter? Worse, after Maleficent attacks the baby with the curse and leaves you can see the scene ending with Aurora's actual mother fleeing the room instead of going to her own child who just attacked (unlike in Sleeping Beauty). The movie paints all the characters in the movie as severely flawed (evil and/or stupid and/or weak, etc) except Diaval just to make Maleficent and all her evil actions not look as bad.

@@alexandrasmith4226 True, Aurora's mother did die, but Maleficent did not know Aurora's mother would die or that "Aurora wouldn't remember her mother" so Maleficent was only lucky her curse wasn't just a 20second fainting spell. Also nothing in her curse said "both people have to love each other". Second, even if Maleficent knew the future of Aurora's mother the whole curse is still a silly paradox. If Stefan truly loves Aurora then his kiss would cure her (just a 20second fainting spell again) and if Stefan didn't truly love Aurora then Maleficent's curse doesn't truly hurt him. Maleficent couldn't grow other wings because they are part of her magic. Fairies biggest magic is their wigs, they can't be replaced. And it would be too risky sending some magic string to find her wings, especially when she doesn't know if they were destroyed or held in a glass box. Another thing, the reason she couldn't remove her curse is because she said "No power on Earth can change it." when she first cursed Aurora. No power, not even hers. I worked at Epcot in the France theater, and the theater pre-show lobby had cases of on-loan costumes from French plays, operas, and movies (Hunchback, Three Musketeers, Cinderella, Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis, La Boheme, La Trivata, Beauty and the Beast, and Maleficent). I always liked to joke about how thin she was, considering she had a child (who is the actual baby Aurora in the film btw) a few months before! She is VERY thin, like most guests probably wouldn’t have gotten her dress pass their thighs! She’s a true master of her craft and is a phenomenal actress!

@chronosclaimsall2 жыл бұрын
@@millieboon Really? I don't see it that way. I think the film portrays them both as wrong, and both knowing that they are wrong. Stefan knows that stealing her wings is wrong, but he's blinded by power. Maleficent knows that cursing the innocent child is wrong, and she still does it because she wants revenge (which to be fair, makes her actions a lot easier to justify for lots of people). Now I personally see all of Stefan's actions after that as responses under stress/trauma. He knows he's done something unforgivable to this all powerful woman, and he thinks it's only a matter of time before she takes something from him too. And perhaps he's thinking more along human lines of thought here, because he probably thinks she won't stop until she takes *everything* from him as another human probably would have done. So he continues to pile on the offenses, hoping to get rid of her before she can hurt him. However, all she ever did was curse his daughter because she deemed it an equivalent exchange: taking something he loved and cherished for years and making it inaccessible to him. After that, all she did was defend her own land. Him living under that much stress and paranoia is definitely going to take a toll on someone's mental state, so I think his decline made sense. Not to show him becoming "more evil", but to show that he was becoming more and more desperate to escape the threat of her ruining his life and kingdom. (Also in the narration they started the movie off by saying the story was slightly different that the one we know, which means they intentionally made him seem different than the caring well-adjusted hopeful king in Sleeping Beauty. In this universe that story was probably written by bards of the kingdom, so it would make sense that the two stories are kind of different since the bards a) wouldn't know the full story and b) would twist the truth in favour of their king regardless.) Anyways that's just my opinion, thank you for reading if you got this far and have a nice day/night/time wherever you are!

6:54 I *just* realised that the actor of Diaval also plays Mr Darcy in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies lol. I'd love to see a reaction to that film up on the channel as well sometime.

You know I remember watching this and absolutely loving it because they break the villain and love stereotypes. I must have had media amnesia because I haven’t watched it since it came out, but this video has made me remember why I fucking stanned this film😂😂

This is bay far one of my favorite live action movies Disney has made. Would love to see you react to the second maleficent movie. Love the reaction and your videos! You do such a great job.

It’s Maleficent’s fault she started to care about Aurora she put a spell on her that anyone who meets her will love her. 😂

17:22 How can you blame her? If someone who had taken care of me turned out to having cursed me, I'd also get hurt and leave that person. Plus Maleficent maybe never told her her name.
@PyroDrew Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Maleficent deliberately deceived Aurora into thinking she was not the "evil fairy" who cursed her, but instead her "fairy godmother" and deliberately waited until the last day of the curse to tell her the truth believing that she would never see Aurora awake again after that anyways. Throughout the film Maleficent was a jerk.
@stellaberndtson3406 Жыл бұрын
@@PyroDrew I mean I don't blame Maleficent. She was so hurt she didn't know what she did, but I don't blame Aurora either. I think they both had a sane reason to act like they did.
@PyroDrew Жыл бұрын
@@stellaberndtson3406 It's sane to want revenge. It's insane and/or evil to deliberately attack and put an innocent child into a coma. Maleficent quietly left Stefan alone for 9+ months after he betrayed her. She only invaded his castle after she learned Aurora was born and then attacked baby Aurora. That's not sane.
@stellaberndtson3406 Жыл бұрын
@@PyroDrew I guess she thought death was too good for him, that he needed to suffer and the best way to do it was taking the thing he loves the most.
@PyroDrew Жыл бұрын
@@stellaberndtson3406 Agreed. Except, if Stefan truly loved Aurora then his kiss would break the curse. If Stefan didn't truly love Aurora then the curse doesn't really hurt him. The movie indirectly implies that both Aurora's own birth mother and father (as well as the 3 pixie fairies) never had "true love" for Aurora. Also at the end Maleficent could have saved Stefan from death with her vast magic (telekinesis, shapeshifting, etc) and/or wings after he "accidentally" fell off the tower since Aurora never wanted her father dead, but Maleficent preferred him dead over anything Aurora may have wanted.
@raintowne-eo7lr Жыл бұрын
The reason she still got so invested in aroura is because she is subject to her own curse. Not only is she cursed to die. But she also cursed her to be beloved by everyone who meet her. Including well. Maleficent. As she has met the child-

Maleficent was always my favourite villain. I was so scared of what a live-action/origin story might be... But I was pleasantly surprised. Maleficent is still my favourite villain.

regarding her being unable to take back her curse, hatred and jealously is a very strong feeling which i think then translated into the intensity of her powers during the curse, the feeling of betrayal and jealously can be quite powerful

I am really glad to see you enjoyed it. It is my favorite Disney live action adaptations next to 101D. Yeah, I can never really figure why many didn't like it, probably they didn't find Maleficent to be as mean or villainous as she originally was in SB. There is a sequel to this one.

I'm actually happy that my magnificent didn't harbor any anger really towards the child because during affairs and everything the children are always innocent. They didn't ask to be made or born, but I also always thought that it was extremely stupid that they sent the kid away. I mean she would be less likely to prick her finger on a spinning wheel if she was constantly surrounded by knights and guards watching her and if it was only going to happen when she was 16 you could have spent her whole childhood together
