The balance of living in the moment/ documenting so you can ground yourself in past experiences it’s so nuanced and tricky!!!!

It really is~

It is one of the reason why I like to shoot film too. I don't get stuck on composition, if it was well exposed or anything else. I just take the photo and move on. Extra points if you are shooting with a point and shoot. Extra points if you let the memories sit on the roll for a bit too before developing.

I use my point & shoot for hangouts and chill times and don’t finish a roll for a while 😂 although when I travel, I get a bit more trigger happy because I’m stimulated by the new environment 😆 the less Canadian/US city it looks, the more stimulating 🤩

Thank you for your interesting thoughts. I am not documenting everything. Instead, my way of preserving memories is to create something how I want to remember a specific moment. A little piece of art, captured as photograph or video. But that is more a compression. I try to compress everything, the visual experience, the mood and my own feelings rather than just trying not to miss anything and recording everything ( like many people do ). As for an example, I went to a big concert recently. I just recorded glimpses of it, a few small highlights, how I want to keep that event in my memory. In the end, it became a beautiful 5 minutes video from a 2 hours concert and I could experience the most of the time just by enjoying the music. This kind of balance is the key to happiness, I think.

Yes! It’s all about balance, little snippets here and there and the crafting at the end. I like it 😄

Important discussion on the difficulties on staying present whilst still engaging with the creative process. For me, I've already found difficulty in vlogging and I will start to try and direct my self more, to avoid the wild, unprocessed, documentation that you touch upon. Thanks for this!

Sometimes the full auto mode is the way to go. On other occasions I also use manual. You should know if you are traveling for the experience or if you want to enjoy your hobby photography. Both is ok.

Yeah! I bring a point & shoot to my hangouts now so I can just snap photos. I also bring one when I travel, but I mostly play by ear what I wanna use that day 😅 it’s good that film and fujifilm cameras aren’t big haha

I have been watching a bunch of your videos because I was researching the Kodak half frame and I love all your videos about it. This a great subject....I also need therapy lol....I am going to watch this a few more times....(I watch them a bunch if times to take in the pics and ideas ,etc.) I cannot stop taking pictures of everyhring. I ha e 70,000 photos on my Samsung s10 512 with a 512 card....a terrabite on my phone....I have several digital cameras and have been shooting films. Since I was 7 and I am now 57. My biggest problem is keeping all of the data and photos sorted. I currently wantnto spend the summer digitizing all my (lol OK a bunch of) film photos for safe keeping and being able to share....I did do photography as a living a long time ago...weddings, seniorportraiture, family photos, location for real estate, studio work, etc. Anyway, let me go watch and listen again. I just wanted you to know I love your videos and thank you for this one. ❤

Aww thank you so much! I don’t have as much as your photos (yet? 😂) but I’m starting to think about long term storage too (my 4TB Dropbox account is full 🙃) especially since I also started taking videos for KZbin 😂

Once I read a psychology article that shared similar findings. The article was mentioning that those who choose to document (for example through photography) a certain experience (like a trip) tend to have better visual recollections and memories of the experience while those that don't document tend to have a more emotional association and connection with the experience when they recall it. I guess both behaviors have their own benefits, it is all about finding balance and making the right choice for each experience. But I have to agree that nowadays with the ever growing presence of social media and the ease of having a camera constantly in our hands most of us (including me) suffer from an unsatisfied need to overdocument everything :(

Interesting! I should find that article 😄 there’s definitely benefit for both, it’s striking a balance that’s important

This is a major problem in general that I have with social media today. Everyone is taking a photo of everything or taking a video as if they will never remember it as long as they live. It's one thing if it's a really special occasion and you have family and friends around and you're taking photos like the way we did in the 90s when we had just a regular film camera. Those moments are special and worth documenting. The documenting every single day today thing, like those losers you see on Instagram who document what they eat what they are wearing that day what they are doing where they are going, like who cares! These are things that don't need to be documented or filmed and no one really cares what you're eating or where you're going or what you're doing that particular day. Unless you're running for office or something amazing happened to you or you got that job or something positive, or you have something inspiring to say to other people, I don't see the point in documenting every stupid thing. Especially making it public which is just cringe and no one cares.. live in the moment! Be your own person and don't have to validate yourself for other people.

Document, document and document your life, your partner's life, your kid's life, your friends, so on and so forth. Memories is what it's all about. Don't let anyone tell you what to do in the world of photography. NEVER. I'm telling you 'bonsees.' This is a terrible video. You have no idea what photography is about. BTW, try documenting using a film camera and get prints of everything you document. It's amazing, years on, when you pull out all those pictures, memories come rushing back. There is no problem documenting. It's a shame more people don't. My dad did with an archaic camera that even I would have trouble figuring out. Funny how he estimated the exposure, adjusted for distance and yet documented much of our lives. And for that I am grateful. Document and be glad you did.

I didn’t say stop. It’s a balance between being present and making memories
