Great video as always. Just one honourable mention for the Seiko Alpinist SARB017 as a classic before the trend😁. As a bloke with a brown/red tinge in the hair and beard, I’m all for the green, however the flood of green dial watches onto the market has made even I grow slightly tired of the colour. Then Omega released the Constellation Globemaster Annual Calendar in green, and I’m in love again. It’s all in the shade, as you suggest. Oily green/black does it for me every time. I have olive skin and black hair so the green contrasts well with that. This gives the green variation a competitive advantage for those in the same boat. Therefore, watch brands looking to expand their collection should be incorporating green dials if (economically feasible). So it makes sense that we are seeing more green dials

I dont see the market as rotating colour trends, I think black white blue green is the mainstream and we will go back to black white blue when the green is over. but I could imagine that the popularity of bronze cases pushes brownish red tones to a more common position.

When I was a kid, my mother had a Gucci watch with screw in replaceable bezels. This way, she could coordinate one watch with any number of outfits she wore. That Gucci was a women's fashion watch, and pretty much the opposite of what most of us in the watch community value in watches. Yes, we value our watches for aesthetics, and think along the lines of our use, casual, sporty, or dressy etc... But in general we don't think about coordinating the color of our watch with the rest of our outfit. We expect that whatever watch we have will coordinate well with whatever color we are wearing. The reason why white, black and blue work so well as dial colors is, they pretty much match everything in most men's wardrobes. Green does not, and for that reason, I think it is a poor choice of dial color, especially in an expensive watch which could be someone's primary watch.

Thanks for this Martin. It's an interesting one because I think for women the colour green will have a far greater appeal. BUT Blues, Blacks, Whites are so much more versatile. Crazy to think how a simple colour can change the way we view a watch

The swappable bezel is an excellent concept. I already do this with my Vostok. A bezel change takes about a minute. It's a conservative (for a Vostok, at least) black dial, so most colors will go well with it. I change bezels on it more often than I change straps on most of my other watches.

It's personal preference for me. I love green dials on watches, always have done (having just bought one finally). I've not once ever had anyone say to me 'your watch doesn't match the rest of your clothing', so for me I don't see a problem with the green. Everybody has their own experiences/opinions, but for me, if I like a watch, same as with anything else, I will wear it.

Visiting IWC's Manhattan boutique recently, I assumed I'd be leaving with the seed planted for a green Pilots Chronograph 41. But the blue on bracelet was stunning. No comparison for me. The real surprise was the Red, somewhat of a Burgundy, Portuguese. So, I agree with you. That and the new Pilot 43 blue on blue leather stole the show. The greens in all their offerings were beautiful. They're amazing watches but green was feeling too trendy in person even though I'd went to see them specifically. Love the Glashutte 60's and 70's in green but did you see the yellow?! Cool.....

Another great VLOG and I said something very similar a couple of months ago in a VLOG. I think green is in currently in vogue, but will date in years to come. In the 1970's brown was the in colour, brown suits, brown interiors and brown cars! I don't see anyone driving a brown car today! Stick with the classic dial colours, namely black and white, obviously blue and silver are an extension of those colours and will not date too.

As a interior designer I can see the trend of green in every fields. Couple of years ago nobody wants to have green details in interior - now everybody wants it (and also gold accents). It has something to do with "art deco" retro wave in clothing, interior design, industrial design etc. Nothing suprising but also nothing special - everything goes there and back in a waves. As we all know - simple adding or changing colour doesnt make any design better :-)

You forgot one, about a year and and a half ago Rado came out with a re edition of their Captain Cook in Bronze at 42mm one of the three colors released was Green. I brought one at $2,800 USD. Nice price to get into both Green and Bronze.

Once again, what a wonderful and thought provoking video. Colors are so personal and for myself affected with red/green colorblindness, it’s blue dials all the way. They just look incredible to me and why I am so in love with my VC Overseas. It’s not just the color but the way it dynamically changes shades in light, angles, views etc. Prob also why Moser is so popular right now with its Fumé dials.

My Seiko szsb018 looks great,jdm raised crystal looks like a baby gs,bought if bc it was on sale and the green dial leather combo looked the best,it's both black and emerald green that is the dial looks almost black until the light hits it. So by that standard it 's very versatile. Little did i know I would be enrolled in the iron guard secret society :)) Now the kicker in a year or so might be this..there were always green dialed watches both the outdoorsy types and the ultra dressy (it goes well with white diamonds) so I wonder if we will see a price surges for models that were released BEFORE the green "craze".

Got a rado captain cook in green, probably one of the nicest green watches I've seen, apart from the hulk. But my latest acquisition is a seiko sla043 with a blue face . As much as it's nice to have a change I think I'm a black blue type of guy. I wasn't sure if a blue face watch with black bezel really works, but it does somehow. Yellow could be a good shout , as it's always a stunning colour and works well with black bezels . If rolex do a yellow sub it will be known as the submarine, lol.

I bought a green Aqua Terra not because of any trend, but because of a few other reasons. One, I have a few blue watches already and wanted something different. But the the main reason is that it is an absolutely stunning color, especially in the sunlight. I buy watches for me, not because of a trend, because trends come and go. My last name is not Rockefeller so buying a watch like the AT for me is a significant investment. Not like buying a trendy shirt or pair of shoes.

Interesting thoughts IDGuy. I think its the manufactures being directed by the marketing departments to grab a quick buck riding the green fashion wave before it crashes but I think in the watch community fashion moves much slower than in other consumer markets. Clothes can go out of date in a season or two and be worth little when the trend has passed by. While I do see the green dial as a trend I do not see it dying out anytime soon but see it as another colour option that is good for for the consumer unless the availability is restricted. There is also a fashion for bright colour dials that really pop but this seems to be targeted at the younger consumer. Over time it's worth looking back to the, excuse the pun the evergreen dial colours that never seem to be the to but never go out of fashion, the classic black, white, silver or champagne as examples, these colours (or lack of) excuse another pun, are timeless. As a personal favourite I do like the red dials with different characteristics from a lacquered flat oxblood dial of say an Oris pointer date to the sunburst cherry of the Aquis again from Oris.

It is an interesting paradigm seeing this shift of colours. A watch like the Oris Aquis green was one of the first that beat the herd if I remember and damn, they make some beautiful dials today. I have recently bought a green Seiko Alpinist simple because I did have a green watch in my collection and It was available on a leather strap. Green is often paired with bronze and gold which suits it well. It also looks good against cream and beige/brown clothing. Interestingly, it is regarded as an unlucky colour and green cars have never sold well in the UK.

When I purchased my Grail watch earlier this year (Oris Aquis cal 400, and yes. I am a lightweight when it comes to watch collecting), I did opt for the blue dial. But I will be to first to admit. Trend, or no trend. The green dials are POPPING!!!

I made the mistake of not getting a Hulk back when I was offered one for 7k in 2017, but I think the green dial watch fad is starting to become too much, and I think this will make the special feeling of green watches less and less in the future. I feel like new colors like purple, pink, and red are more unique and will definitely have also a place in the watch world. Thanks, IDGuy for the great video.

I think it's entirely down to the hue / saturation of the color whether a model will stand the test of time and not be a fad, regardless of what color we are talking about. As one's tastes evolves over time, they might get tired of a very bright and saturated color. If I take my personal example, I have always found the green hue used in the Rolex Submariner models since 2003 garish. The one used in the Oyster Perpetual 36 or 41 is a bit more subdued, but I'm pretty sure I would tire of it over time. I just went for a GO SeaQ Reed Green over the blue version precisely because of how restrained the hue is. Whereas the blue dial is quite magnificent, but also very bright due to the sunburst finish, the matte green dial goes from emerald green under intense light to a very discrete charcoal under most lighting conditions. It is very subtle, and very discrete, which gives me confidence I'll enjoy wearing it in both casual a more formal settings.

Probably the best exponents of the green dial is Grand Seiko. One look at the GS "Matrix" and you are enthralled. It is breathtaking. With a green dial a lot depends on the shade - a green dial can either pop or look bland. Blue dials generally look good in every shade. My tip for the next colour trend is brown. Works exceptionally well with the integrated sports watch craze.

If one manufacturer offers green, all of the others must offer green, or risk losing the "customer who wants green". They completely ignored that customer in the past, but now they can't afford to. And once green happened, it wasn't long before reds, yellows, and "Tiffany blue" were rolled out. Thanks to modern manufacturing methods (logistics in particular), all of these options are probably here to stay, and manufacturers won't find it difficult to track trends in fashion. If green is "out" next year, production will adjust accordingly. (My field watch is olive green, and I appreciated having the option!)

I do like my green OP34 with the olive dial (discontinued). Missed it in the line up. It is a wonderful watch and very wearable in different settings. Blue is still the go to color. Sadly the last year; we have a new release, the dial is now green. That pretty much sucks. Think of something new, a new color. I do like the turquoise and coral red which Rolex is now using. Prices are dumb so i will not even look at one .

@@ID-Guy where i will go next i don’t know yet. This year i was luckily enough i could add two watches to my collection. A JLC Reverso Tribute Small Seconds in blue (monoface) and a Rolex Pepsi (at retail). The Pepsi was the watch I wanted nice about 25 years, when i first saw it in. National Geographic. I do like the Patek World Time in rose gold. But i am not willing to spend those amounts yet. Had it on my wrist in Shanghai to see if i like it, and i do. But a 40k watch is just too much as this point in time. I still want to use my watches all the time. With this amount of 40k i still need to worry, which goes against the purchase of a watch. Watches are made to be used.

A few years ago blue was the “it” color, now it’s green, next will probably be red and I predict purple after that-just follow the Rainbow 🌈😎. I think in time green watches will be as popular as a harvest gold colored fridge.

I'll always have a 10:1 ratio of black to white dials. I'v never liked green or blue dials. And feel all my watches could be worn in any scenario. Almost any accents and attire works with black (few with white). As the seiko wilard and glashutte diver look good in green or blue stand alone i'd only get them in black happily. AND if Tudor make the new pelagos FXD in black i'll get it in a heart-beat and send it to you first for a few weeks to review and do all the sticker-porn/unboxing i don't get :) Seeing you in person upgraded your already stellar videos! thank you for your time and hard work!

Personally I find green more versatile than blue, tho currently I own one blue dialed watch ( king Turtle Manta Ray) but not a green, tho will probably pick up a green Willard soon. Green is an after thought. You need neutral colours for versatility and seriousness. "Coming back in vogue": you need perennial colours that are above fashion as stated in a Rolex advert.

Great video as always. I know it’s a popular model but I really don’t like the Rolex Hulk - I find the shade of green very bright and off-putting. It is not a versatile colour at all. The Tudor Black Bay Harrods edition is much more attractive. The green OPs are beautiful as well.

I have seen some burgundy watches in the last year. One IWC which was stunning and some others. I find the colour burgundy pretty nice for people with taint not so much for myself, but I see a need for a red one which drags for attention at a lot of wrists.

It’s fashion(able) along with, possibly, bronze cases? Have a look at AnOrdain and their range of enamelled dial watches, including Fumé. May think differently about the ‘in’ colour?

Bronze is definitely getting a lot of attention (as we've been seeing) and the mix with purple / burgundy dials looks like it's also getting popular. Great call about AnOrdain! When it comes to being able to choose a colour for a watch dial (that other makers aren't allowing) a maker like AnOrdain with their custom finishes are a world apart. Thanks for this Jim!

I honestly believe this green 5711 would be a distinctly so-so watch in a hypothetical scenario where supply and demand were in equilibrium. It's the über-rarity, the not-even-VIPs-have-a hope-in-hell factor, which makes it special. Objectively speaking, I think most people would prefer the blue (and indeed white) variant to the green.

I have the Seiko Alpinist and Orient Kamasu, both in green. I love them both, but don't seek out green watches. I just thought the particular shades of green worked with these two. I do love the look of the JLC Reverso in green, but it's always about the shade of any color.

Great video. I prefer a black dial, so much so back in 2010 i turned down a hulk from my A.D because i thought a green watch looked stupid and brought and black sub. I wouldn't swap it even now for a hulk because i still think it looks stupid.

You and I might be distant relatives - I’ve been thinking burgundy will be the next hot color (Oris already there with the Big Crown). I’m one of those who really has no interest in green (or brown, college color). I do give PP and others a little credit for going with an off green instead of a very basic down the middle version so many rolled out.

Green is fine with gold/bronze accents. Green on steel, apart some special green (that H. Moser... I'm drooling on it since its presentation... And also the emerald green of some IWC...) doesn't pop-out like blue. Personally I'd love to see more variety around. More champagne dials, more red dials (check out the Grand Seiko SBGH269, it is GORGEOUS), for instance.

Well I have to disagree with you when it comes to subtle. For example the new DJ 36 Palm Dial looks very extravagant on the press photos but on the wrist it has a dark green tone, which reminds of a darker dial. The palm motif just shines when hit by the right lighting. Same applies even more (apparently, I do not own one) on the 5711 in green. It just appears as green with the light hitting it. Blue on the other hand usually is really bright when used as a dial colour.

I guess I would disagree that green should be held back to only a few limited "special" models. It makes green a "special" color and just feeds into the hype and FOMO of it all; like salmon dials. But I do agree that with all the brands rushing in to make green watches, it feels like a fad, might make the market react cynically to it all (like we are now?) and potentially poorer than expected sales might dial it back to when green watches were a rarity, and I don't like that. I would like green to be widely available, so long as they are always thoughtfully shaded/textured and not just added for variety sake.

I don’t care what’s in vogue. Blue is my favorite color. My dream watch has always been the Rolex two toned Bluesy Sub. I got the call from my AD 3 weeks ago I’m now wearing it. With green, it definitely depends on the green. I can’t stand the olive shades. I just buy what I love.

I find green to be a difficult color to match with my wardrobe, which is a mix of darker colors. And for some reason I associate the color with christmas, which to me is a little bit silly. Where the trend goes from here doesnt really matter to me, but I hope we go from everything being silvery metal back to gilded fonts, gold/redder golds hand sets and indices on non rubber quality straps (canvas/wool/leather).

I'm aware of the green trend but it's not a colour that really speaks to me, it probably has appeal to those who see a watch more as a fashion accessory. I collect mainly vintage watches & you don't see many with green dials, I wonder if there's a reason for that!

And let's not forget your Delta Integrale! Even back then green wasn't a thing by the sounds of it. There must be a reason. Maybe the colour was harder to produce or people just weren't into it? Maybe it gave off "Lead Paint" vibes that scared people away ;)

@@ID-Guy Ha well absolutely! I guess with watches made 30+ years ago when you needed a decent watch as a tool, had to be more versatile as it was likely to be your only watch . I don't know if green dials were more difficult to make & there were funky coloured watches in the 1970s in particular, but most watches before that decade seem to have versatile coloured dials like black, white, cream, gold & silver. Green could have scared people away, imagine an all Radium painted dial!

Because green isn't a great color for a watch dial. Or even a watch band, for that matter. I tried it once and after a couple of months, I switched back to brown. Green looks ok with tan, khaki some shades of blue, and some shades of brown. And not very well with other colors. Green with yellow looks like you are on your way to a Green Bay Packers tailgate. And Green with Red looks like you are one of Santa's Elves. Most men don't wear a lot of green shirts, jackets, or pants so It isn't a color a lot of men wear a lot, So in a nutshell, wearing a green watch requires men to pay a lot more attention to colors then they like to do.

Strange how a simple colour change can make or break something, right? Think a lot of us feel this way. Some watches looks terrific in green, others better in blue, and many more deserve to stay black. Madness I tell you! ;)

The human eye is most sensitive in the green part of the spectrum and can distinguish more shades of green than any other colour - conferring an evolutionary advantage in being able to identify which green things can be eaten safely and which probably will kill you. So I think that green taps probably into a subconscious part of the brain on this basis, and that's also why we may love one shade of green and not another, whereas blues are all pretty much of a muchness. Red is also considered attractive but many shades remind one of the colour of blood and entrails, and yellow and orange are universal colours of caution even if they may be signal delicious fruit. Personally I like tobacco brown and salmon dials, but I think you could be on to something with burgundy.

I just bought a GO SeaQ Pano with the blue dial and bezel. I had to think long and hard to get that over the black, so no, green is not for me. Maybe it's this seasons tulip.

It is indeed odd, just look at the Rolex OP - a basic, time only watch. Considered an entry level Rolex, however the "Tiffany" coloured dial is significantly more expensive and harder to find. I felt like Blue was a colour much too over done, and never liked having a Blue Dial. The only exception would be the Pelagos, for its matt-finish dial. As a fan of Art Deco, I always find deep maroon and green quite interesting, especially when paired with Rose Gold. The Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso, the maroon and rosegold tribute is absolutely fantastic. The green on the H. Moser Streamliner is magnificent and draws me in. Interestingly enough, people who own a Rolex OP can always have the dial replaced with a different colour when they send it back for servicing. Much like in Architecture where design language fluctuated from Le Corbusier to Zaha Hadid - it's personal flavour. However, looking at Instagram and how "Modern" Bauhaus Minimalist designs tend to be easy on the eye and bound to get more clicks; maybe that is the same phenomenon with this new obsession of Green Dials.

I'm not a fan of green dials per se and I really don't like Huks, or military olive drab, although I did go through an uban-camo phase 15 years back or so, but I've come to really like my SEIKO Jade Monster, but not the normal kind of green but has that aqua thing going on and I love the turquoise spectrum. Sometime it looks quite blueish and sometimes it's more emerald like and I've been wearing if for a couple weeks so I guess I've come to love it.

I really like some of the green watches but it depends on the design and colour. I dislike a lot of them including the hulk, it’s gets boring when so many makers try to get on the bandwagon. I think my money would be on a Tiffany esk blue being the next must have colour.

Next colour to become popular is Tiffany Blue. Basically the entire watch industry is just following 2 brands in terms of dial colour to go for : Rolex and Patek.

I like green watches, but not all obviously. The green Omega AT, awesome. The Pistachio Breitling, awesome. The green palm montif DJ36 Rolex, hideous. Blue dialed watches have always, and will always, be my favorite.

Not sure I'd call the Batman a blue watch. It has a black dial and half the bezel is black. Of course, the half black and half blue bezel is what makes it special (LOVE MINE) but I'd still say it's a black watch.
