There is only one KZbin Channel I am hooked on that explains watch design in a compelling manner, and that channel is yours! You continue to teach me more in 15 minutes through audio and visual than I learn from any other venue. I do not own a Lyre case watch yet, and to me it is exquisite. Maybe it is the linkage to the musical instrument. Second for me would be rectangular cased watches. Again, you are a master at your craft!

Always a blast bringing these forward Reed. The fact that these subjects resonates with someone out there means the world to me. Very soon I'll be going back to try and redesign (neaten up) watches, which is going to be exciting! Thank you for sitting through me and my verbal diarrhoea for 15 minutes ;)

Hi IDGuy, thanks for your subject presentation. I appreciate the detailed organized coverage you have done for this subject discussion. This was well covered by focusing on watch cases designs history as basis and guidelines. The design elements and qualities in wristwatches are some of the appealing and attraction factors to me in this watch hobby. Thanks with best regards. 😎⌚👍

My pleasure Thomason and thank you for taking the time to watch it all! Designs do really manage to tell stories and it's so great being able to link the history with them and their development (also how these styles went in and out of fashion) I also find it pretty amazing how so many of these styles have returned in different ways and still manage to be relevant! Thanks again!

I enjoyed this commentary. Case design has been a big driver in my collection recently. I just added a Linde Werdelin Oktopus to my collection this week and the geometric integrated case adds a texture that I never expected to enjoy.

Isn't it also great that price doesn't factor in when we consider case designs? Such an interesting idea to look at your collection that way. I hope you're well and still thriving, sir! And thank you for the comment

I didn't even know there are so many case specifications, that quite surprised me. While watching your 'lecture' I even came to an interesting thought, that might be a video inspiration. My bucket list for watches is way too big to fulfill. It is like I see a must-have for every watch brand. This kind of prevents me from pulling the trigger on buying my first watch. As always, exceptional video. It's always a good day, when IDGuy uploads something.

Brilliant subject for a video that I'd love to address! Wow. If you'd like to further elaborate on this point, I'd happily read your email / reply as a part of the video too (for more context) - such an interesting conundrum that I (and I'm sure many others who are new) can definitely relate to. Thank you for this brother

@@ID-Guy Sure, I was thinking further on this topic. I have the feeling, that a big taste for watches could ruin a collection. For example, I could imagine having 5 different integrated bracelet watches, but that would not be a wise decision in my opinion. On the other hand, there are some watches I would love to have, but would fit due to lifestyle, exclusiveness or simply the size, but I would refuse to let go off the Idea of owning this piece. It's pretty much the idea of a farmer being together with a Victoria's Secret model. Another taunting thought would be, that the grass is greener on the other side. Something like owning a Cartier tank, but regretting the purchase, because the JLC reverso might have been the better choice, resulting in not enjoying the actual experience of owning a good watch. Developing an own unique taste and stick to it with discipline is what it boils down.

Such a superb video and I learned a lot watching it. I did not know my Glycine Combat Sub 42 has a skin diver case but I do now.
@ID-Guy3 жыл бұрын
My pleasure Daniel! I'd say your Glycine does fall into that "Skin Diver" category. I think it was a style that was reintroduced again around the 80's (the whole integrated slab between the lugs) Thank you for taking the time to watch the clip, brother!
@anthonystevens86833 жыл бұрын
Many thanks IDGuy for this educational video. For aesthetics the lyre lug is the most conservative channeling the eye towards the dial but the Oyster case is arguably the most recognizable, originally a tool watch design drifting unmistakably over the years towards that of luxury and exclusivity. The cushion cases for me define the classic modern watch case with the tank design preceding that. It's an interesting discussion for integrated bracelets as there are many different designs out there today and this may be a sub-subject discussion for this video. Anyway this is a great thought provoking and necessary video devoid of complications but without the chassis there is no watch as you say. For sure it will be interesting what the designers come up with next.

Watch cases are sometime unsung heroes, like Moser, all the attention goes to the dials but they have awesome cases too. Reminds me of the hunter's caseback Pateks but for half the price. And I love a tonneau oh do I... FPJ, Cartier...
@ID-Guy3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely brother. It's criminal that cases don't get as much attention. Think there should also be a time when we judge how the cases and dials actually work together (in harmony) - such great history behind these designs and I love seeing how they resurface a few decades later with a new spin!

Having grown up wearing a slew of digital Casio watches, I'll always have a soft spot for square-ish/cushion cases. Fastforward to present day, I tend to geek out when seeing models like the Glashütte Original Seventies Panorama or a Patek Nautilus (it's hip to be square...or something like that, I dunno 😁). Also, there's a model by Zodiac called Olympos that resembles a shield (at least to me) with the crown fixed at the 2 o'clock position; it's a funky design but I really dig it 👍. Cheers on another great video topic 🍻.

Great options you've mentioned here Han. Also it's amazing how much the case can influence our purchasing decisions! Subliminally they're not often looked at but make the biggest impact on our choices in the end. As for Cartier... ah, timeless.

Would the early G-Shocks the Octagons (5000 series) referred to as "Squares" and the Horseshoes (6000 and 7000 series) be classified as "Integrated"? I love that watch case. There's something bracelet-like about having the lugs flow into the strap with a defined curvature and lower flexibility. It gives the watch the visual bulk that defines the brand while also adding additional shock-protection.
