Me too. Jump scares are for Halloween Haunted Houses. Growing unease and that creeping feeling that characters are either losing it or pulling the mask of sanity off are more effective.

When I first saw the following, it was creepy but, parts are now cut out ( @ least 1 part) & it kind of has an unintentionally funny moment. The movie was "The Legend of Hellhouse:" Yes. it had some jump scares but it works instead of annoys. As far as the unintentionally funny moment, all I'll say is watch the cat segment in it.

Chris, you hit the nail on the head when you said that audiences have forgotten what real horror is People need to realize that if a person jumps after a jumpscare happens that doesn't automatically mean it scared them, it was because of the loud noise that it made, it's not genuine fear, it's a bodily reaction that we can't help, similar to how, even if you see it coming, if you hear nails scratching on a chalkboard it's gonna hurt your ears and cause you to clench up, people need to stop confusing real fear with natural human reactions

One movie that scared the hell out of me was "The Ghost and the Darkness". I would call it a horror movie, because man eating lions that hunt purely for sport ARE FUCKING HORRIFYING!!! The jumpscares are built up by the lions constantly evading the traps placed by the engineer and the hunter for hire. No zombies, no mythological lore bullcrap, no vampires, just pure, unadulterated reality.

Ben McDonald jump scares are also a form of psychological release. you can't help but relax after a jump scare. Thats why psychological horror is so good, it slowly increases the fear and mental preassure without letting up.

*Anirudh Viswanathan* along those same lines, many episodes of that crime show "Criminal Minds" scare the hell out of me, because they are actually reiterations of the things that really happen in a world populated with the most terrifying monster of all -the anonymous human predator! Very few horror movies genuinely scare me -but that show often does (or did)! :)

A jump scare isn't a scare it's a startle. You can have a documentary of animals and suddenly a picture of an ass taking a massive dump with earrape audio. It gives the same reaction. It's startling. Horror movies need to make you paranoid and scared even after the movie is over

I dont think its even startle. Because you expect it. When someone walks in corridor and everything is dark and music is low you know 100% its coming. So its not even surprising. I dont even move or give a damn about it. I just feel violated (mostly ear rape due to sudden change of volume). So instead of jump scare I would say "sudden ear rape". Its simply disgusting, disturbing whatever you wanna call BUT scary. Personally I find the horrors that show dark sides of reality with killers being natural things (like insanity etc.) the most scary. Because only children will believe that there is some Freddy Krueger or Jason Voorhees but if something can actually happen even to me then THATS what I find scary.

I was pretty spooked the first few times I played it. Now i do think the whole franchise was milked too long. It should have just been fnaf 1 because it was a really good idea. Those animatronics are pretty frightening because it reminds us of those creepy animatronics from chuck e cheese.

i dislike horror in general, 9/10 are incredibly disappointing and laughably stupid plus i wanna avoid the nightmares but i plucked up the courage to watch the babadook and did not regret, yea it was tricky to get to sleep that night but the film was well worth it and that's the point i think, whatever jonra you stick on a film at the end of the day, did you enjoy it was it a good film, that's what matters, my point is yea i don't like horror movies because i don't understand why people want to be scared but its good to understand the necessity of the feel of the movie to portray the idea, i think a big problem with movie makers is they seem to choose the jonra and the age before the film is made when it should be the opposite the jonra should be determined by the movie. if you pic the jonra first then you will aim it towards that which will take away from the movie.

The greatest issue with jump scares, is that you can anticipate when they're about to happen. That's not how jump scares should work. They should be random and un-calculated, other wise you defeat the purpose of a jump scare. Jump scares are supposed to be used in-between the real scares.
@colefisher6751

Jesse Bond Anticipation is the key tho

You misunderstand me. A jump scare is devised to catch you off guard, because you're not supposed to know when a jump scare is going to happen, hence why it makes you "jump". Anticipation and suspense are great tools to use in the horror movie tool kit, but what's the point of trying to jump on the audience if they know it's coming?

No, jump scares are suppose to be used to cause an unease as you watch and they should be NATURAL, not some random 'out-of-the-blue noise that makes no sense to the story, let alone the scene. Perfect example of what I'm talking about is a creaking door somewhere in a dark house, or someone walking through a dark, empty hallway on a cold night and suddenly the heater clangs on breaking the silence. You don't need unnecessary, random noises. You need organic sound that fits the mood of the scene....of course, you need to set the scene properly first.

Misery by Stephen King is one of my favorites horror movies, because it is pure horror. Imagine being injured and kinapped and held hostage by a psychopath that claims to love you or at least care for you. The way the movie builds up tension is like no other movie. I've found an effective gauge for a horror movie i like to apply on the second viewing (if a film was good enough to watch a second time). Watch the film a second time with no sound. If a moment in the film still has a stinger effect, then you can generally tell a scene was shot well enough to build tension where the soundtrack only enhances the moment, rather than the moment depending on the soundtrack.

There's nothing wrong with horror that isn't shy about showing the monster, if done well (The Thing). There's nothing wrong with explicit horror, if done well (The Exorcist). There's nothing wrong with slasher horror if done well (Psycho). There's nothing wrong with non-scary horror, if done well (The Shining).

Most "modern horrors" I've seen with the jump scares I've forgotten about. The original terminator still unnerves me. Imagine being chased by something that resembles a human but isn't human, that nothing stop them, not knives, not bullets, not fire. But fire burns the darkness away, which makes it even more unnerving that it doesn't work. That it won't stop until it "gets you". You run so hard that your legs don't work and you have to crawl, putting buildings, cars and people between it and you and it still comes for *YOU*.

The Shining was as mediocre a movie as there is. It’s not scary; it’s not interesting; it’s not creepy; it’s not suspenseful. Instead of making a movie about a mans slow decent into insanity, we have a movie with Jack Nicholson being Jack Nicholson in a hotel with a couple of ghosts. Unfortunately the Kubrick fanboys jizz over this movie because they love to look for the hidden meanings. Hidden meanings that aren’t even there. But, hey, at least it was a little better than the made for tv version.

i recently tried to explain why jump scares arent actually scary to my kids while discussing some of the latest horror movies. if your friend hides in the bushes then jumps out and shouts BOO when you arent expecting it, you will likely jump and for a split second you might feel scared. is your friend scary? of course not. its closer to being surprised than it is to being scary. i told them the easiest way to tell whether its a cheap jump scare is this: if you jump and feel scared...then 2 seconds later everyone is kinda chuckling looking at each other as if to say "that one got me" then clearly in less than 2 seconds you arent scared any more. another clue is that most people can sense the jump scare coming even if they arent consciously looking for it. my wife will literally hide her face before every jump scare and when i ask why she says she knows something scary is about to happen. so.. she can close her eyes a couple times for 5 seconds and avoid the "scary" parts of the movie? so...remove 20 seconds of this movie and it wont even be scary. i prefer the "scary" to be unavoidable. i prefer it to be woven into to the story so well that you cant watch the movie while skipping the few scary parts

You've nailed it. Jumpscares are so overused that they telegraph themselves now. Half the time nowadays when I'm watching a new film I sit with the remote in my hand so I can turn the volume down when I sense they're coming. One of my roommates noticed this and asked me "if you're scared why do you keep watching the movie?", to which I said "I'm not scared, I just don't like being shouted at".

I was shocked reading that Unknown User is okay for 12 year-olds (I'm 25 and was disgusted and horrified by that movie) and checked online - the wikipedia page says that it was initially published with a FSK 12 (June 2015) but revisited in October 2015. Now it's FSK 16 which is way more appropriate (still too young imo but better).

MaschaDraws I Think 16+ is ok but still, I know some older people who were scared of this movie, and I think every horror movie should be 18+. Sounds a little bit too much and people under 18 will probably be against it, but I personally think that's justified. You can't define (is that a word lol) someones fear by their age. But if someone's 18+ they might be more ok with being scared.

Thats Exactly why "The Shining" wasnt well recived in theaters and reviewers (apart from being unfaithfull to the book), Its an amazing Psychological horror thriller that doesnt tell you half of whats actually going on and thanks to that, it creates a stunning atmosphere, creppy performances and disturbing thiller that doesnt go beyond fantasy or reality AND THATS THE THING THAT MAKES IT A CLASSIC Did you actually know that back then Stanley Kubrick and Shelley Duvall were nominated for razzies? A razzie is an insult (movies like catwoman and jack and jill), and the shining is very far away from being one or one of those movies, Now its acttualy one of the best Psychological horror thriller of all time

The Shining is one of the best horror movies of all time. Like real -life horror, it seems quite normal in the beginning. Then, there’s a creeping sense of something not quite right. Watching Johnny slip into insanity is the most horrifying thing. Unfortunately, the word “horror” has been corrupted by the offenses listed in this video. A really good psychological movie has the audience feeling acutely uncomfortable. Tension, anxiety, maybe disgust or revulsion-feeling this in a fictional, somewhat controlled setting is what makes these thrillers so cathartic. I felt all that watching the 2018 iteration of the movie IT; oddly enough, I felt really good after. It was like a reset.

@@Ray_TheRebel If the book was something original in concepts and basic structure that was in the 80' when it was wrote, not now, so it doesn't count beyond nostalgia 😑 I dont need to take classes of any kind (besides, how old are YOU to call me kid?, and even with that, you think you're superior or something 'cuz you're older? That's lame ) because a movie is based in something that old that appearently "invented" the "child group vs monster" cliché. Besides The movie works because of jumpscares and the fact that Skarsgard's Pennywise is ugly as fuck on purpose so it can be superficially scary, and that is cheap for "the best horror film of the year". I didnt complain that the movie has the clichés that Stephen King kinda invented for his novels, i complained about the ACTUAL HORROR MOVIES CLICHÉS, wich someone with half brains can notice, and the fact that the tone of the movie is a dissaster, and the fact that Bev is bullied because "she's a girl" is stupid even for the 80's, she could be bullied because she's a redhair, something that still happens today!!

I agree with a lot of what you said. You are right to look at box office numbers because the people with money that back the movies are interested in the profits and not the art, which is why we have so many cheaply produced jump scare movies, because the motive is the cash grab. One point i think you missed is that its easy to focus on the crappy movies, and compare them to the classics. Being a big fan of horror I've seen some great movies in recent years, as well as the classics, but what we forget is in the era of the classics there were plenty of crappy movies that have been forgotten about. Movies like Annabell & Ouija will be forgotten, and in 10 years we may be praising this era for Oculus & Babadook. Fantastic video Chris! To me jump-scare is the cheapest way to put a scare on a viewer watching the movie. True horror is to make the viewer feel scared by the atmosphere of the movie itself, not rely on scare by having something lunge at the screen accompanied by a loud music sting/sound effect.

@Black lodge ~ 'Rec.' is a Spanish movie, found footage, infected zombie, very good. There is the Swedish 'Let the right one in' about a vampire girl, simple and brutal. 'Last Train to Bushan' a Korean zombie movie, pretty good. 'As Above So Below' very creepy, set in Paris not sure who made it though. 'Brain Dead' is a New Zealand movie, zombie again, funny. 'Audition' is Japanese, it's brutal, about a man than dates a terrifying young woman. There are more but those are good.

In my opinion, Jopanese horror movies are very good at setting the unsettling mood (the most well known ones being movies like The Ring, or The Grudge [the original ones of-course]). "Audition" was a pretty scary movie and it was highly praised too. Another film I personally enjoyed was "Cold Fish", though it has so much violence and gore (it's based on a true event). For a foreign film other than Japanese, I think "Goodnight Mommy" was very well made. But those are just some of my personal opinions and I'm not sure if they fit to your taste.

For me, a true horror movie makes you feel paranoid and sleepless. Here's a cliched horror film: Opening scene shows origin of spirit/demon/monster, dumb teenagers check out house/forest with said creature, jumpscare by friend, another teenager stupidly unleashes something without caution, friend disappears/dies, friends argue about what happened, another person dies, friends suddenly become unstoppable and join forces, blood spurts out, jumpscares, jumpscare, spirit/demon/monster is now gone, friends move out, final jumpscare. Here's how to fix that: don't use jumpscares too much, don't rely heavily on gore, use more suspense and darkness and silence, but NO JUMPSCARES, don't use teenagers as main characters.

I had always thought I had no spine when it comes to horror films because I hate haunted houses (in amusement parks), hate being jumped and/or scared and quite literally just the thought of a clown under my bed is enough to cost me my sleep, so I avoided them altogether. When I went to see "Sinister" with a friend in the cinema, the creature (?)'s image haunted my mind so bad that I couldn't sleep until 7 am the next day, so I was even more convinced that horrors just weren't for me. Then last week I went to see "The Conjuring 2" in cinema after hearing numerous praises from Chris and Jeremy Jahns, other critics and fans alike, hoping and exciting for a good scare (I was in the mood to be scared), and... I was gravely disappointed. Of course there's that one scene (which I won't spoil) that is the definite highlight, it was really scary that made me peaked at the screen through my fingers, but in the end I felt nothing, I was even so distracted by the end of the film that I started my habitual nitpicking, the demon didn't make a heavy impact on me like the creature in "Sinister", in fact no impact was made at all. Then I realized that I'm not a spineless little shit, it's just that for my virginal horror experience, I had a well-made horror film in the best setting possible (the cinema). Thinking about the state of horrors nowadays, that revelation is quite sad actually.

The industry used to rely on slow building tension. Sure, stuff would happen to make you feel insecure or tense (a side character dying or a ramp up in antagonist activity) but it was softer. Not about being scared but building to something more. Atmosphere and subtly are the keys to being actually decent (not the best, but they're the bedrock of the genre).

Interesting idea. Movie pitch: Parents are born-again Bobs. Only child is a shy vulnerable home-schooled tweenie. Her parents make her go to sleep listening to sermons on her laptop. Then one night a voice emits from her laptop, it's a Richard Dawkins' video. This awakens questions in her mind. She brings them up with her parents, which starts a cycle of emotional abuse, which ultimately causes her a mental breakdown and she is sent to live with her grim pastor grandfather, who is a secret paedophile.

Plot is largely irrelevant for horror. The point of horror is to get the audience involved with characters that are in a state of dread because they most likely will be killed. It's a basic natural feeling not something complicated to achieve requiring a grand plot. It's also why some of the best horror movies revolve around single locations because the audience doesn't have to follow unnecessary locations and additional distractions for filler.

+ConDom While I agree with you, I think dominant media is very, very, *very* selective and careful about what they'll show in certain public places, specifically movie theaters. Especially when the source is from an "anyone-can-put-their-opinion-in" community like KZbin. See, the public is *sooo* freakin PC that everyone's too concerned about not hurting anyone's feelings and putting up "safe zones" where no bitch and a half will get all triggered and offended. If they played this surprisingly educational segment at a theater, a lot of people would probably get butt hurt because it would reflect on their movie-going choices and it would actually be bad for the big-screen business. It's because of this reason that the movies won't show the audience something logical or educational. Both fields have *some* sort of bias trailing behind them, and a lot of businesses today don't *like* bias.

@@Unknown-ug9cf Cause they don't know the difference between being scared and being creeped out. Jumpscares are scary only because you don't expect them, so you're taken aback (although you can usually expect a jumpscare). Being creeped out is something that goes deeper than a momentary, intense fright. It is a very cheap way of scaring people, especially when there's a scarce character and plot structure and development. What really creep me out, for example, are slow shots with very subtle details, but still quite detectable. Something hidden from a naive and distracted mind, but if you look closely, the danger is right behind you, or just in front of you. But you don't see it at first. You keep doing your things, while someone follows each one of your steps and moves. Sinister, strident music plays a vital role, as the protagonist is consumed by angst and fear, and you feel those same emotions. By the way, I loved Babadook, and The Witch too. I wouldn't consider them masterpieces though, but they are definitely better than cheap, ghost films.

Chris, I agree with you. I am SO SICK of cliche horror, such as dumb teenagers, creature features, and constant jump scares. I think madness movies should be the new horror. From The Shining to Oculus, insanity creates REAL fear in people. And Blair With and Paranormal Activity were also madness films. Even Jaws did well, for it was not just the monster shark, but how the movie got inside our heads, that made it so scary. Take Lifetime movies, which are designed to install complete fear of men into naive women; these TV movies are cheesy, but are able to manipulate those who let them. Horror that truly gets inside your head is what people should expect in cinema, not those "scare Betty Lou in the 57 T-Bird" cliches.

My favorite tactic to replace the jumpscare is to use dramatic irony. Let the audience see something spooky or dangerous that the character can't. The Haunting of Hill House makes great use of this. It also uses the reverse strategy of showing the ghost's eye view, where you see the look of fear long before you see the cause of it, but then the camera tracks back and pivots to a side view of the character and the ghost. I find it clever when either the audience or the character - but not both - can see the threat. The former generates a sense of "get out of there, it's right behind you!", the latter more of a "oh god, what terrifying thing are you seeing that I'm not?".

As a fan of gory movies like Saw and Texas chainsaw massacre myself I can agree that gore itself is not scary, some of my favorite horror flicks have little to no blood spill. The best horror movies are the ones that make you question your own beliefs, because in life that's what's scary, or the fear of having to change beliefs, like when you figure out about that how a hot dog is made, or how blood was spilt in Congo to get that new IPhone on the market, horror is the best way to do this life changing feeling.

+Raw-Dog Randy Its hard if youre an incapable writer. The title should be what's wrong with American horror movies, because other countries, most notably) France with their ANGELIC and soul raping masterpieces of the New French Extremity cannon, Japan with their Gonzo avante garde excercises in excess that are able to seamlessly evoke the most unpleasant of emotions, and Mexico which seems to have a knack for religious subversion and the relentless perversion of societal norms, usually parent child relationships. I could name tons of brilliant examples from each of those god forsaken countries, but what of American? It seems that any good horror movie made here is an Exception to the rule of throwing shit at a wall until something sticks that is american horror encapsulated. The writing and directing just isnt capable of adequate portrayal of actual emotions.Even in non-horror movies this seems to be the case. The recent Canadian true-crime horror(fying) movie The Snowtown Murders is a great recent example of effective Violence that sticks with you. Its incredibly emotional and powerful. The majority of movies by Gaspar Noe (most known for the triumph that is Irreversible) are near flawless examples of this also. I cant think of a modern American director who is capable of this. I'm not originally from here, but Ive lived here all of my adult life. I love American literature, I love the American people, there are alot of wonderful and insightful messages that could be used regarding American society and culture that would work amazing in horror (classism, liberal PC culture, celebrity culture, the acceptance and advocation of ideologies that fundamentally go against the beliefs most Americans hold dear to their heart even when those ideologies at bringing about their demise, the undercurrent of racial guilt present here, the limitations of the common american family dynamic, consumerism, etc) and some of my favorite recent american horror movies indeed use said themes. May and Funny Games jumped in my mind immediatley. Also, Im talking about MODERN horror in the U.S. not in general. 70s exploitation and the sub genere of body horror in particular which was mastered by american directors long ago should never be ignored when talking about the history and brilliant contributions made by the U.S. In a country where horror is so mainstream and that has, in the past, made some of the most definitive examples of effective horror, what the fuck happened? Since Ive been alive, its been saturated by Shit. Sure they're are some exceptions, but seriously. A work of art comes around once in a blue moon. And Ive met more dedicated horror fans with actual knowledge and insight here then in any other country Ive visited or stayed at for awhile. It's disheartening, I know there are some brilliant writers out there waiting for an opportunity, but the way that the system is set up, any studio will most likely fuck up something great in post production or audience testing or audience expectations will ruin it for the majority or It might be considered to "bleak" or "taboo" for "american audience" (Good God, look at what that idea did to the ending of The Descent!) Also, has anyone seen antiviral? It was made by David Croneburgs son and I personally enjoyed it but thought it was a little ham-fisted. Still, one of my most recent favorites. Did anyone else enjoy it? I dont remember if it good bad or good reviews, but most people I know hated it. My love and fear and hate for needles might have made it more effective than it really is. But there is a fetishization (is that a word?) of needles that I as a former junkie can identify with, I suppose. I haven't used for two years almost three since right before I turned 20, but still felt uncomfortable as fuck from some scenes, so that's something, I guess.

I am so sick of jump scares, and it's gotten so bad that KZbin even has entire channels now devoted to supposedly "real" scary events that only result in - guess what? Jump scares. Jump scares can be done right, but not when the genre is completely inundated with them. I personally thought Insidious was great, although I did have some serious issues with it that most people would have gone "okay, whatever" at. But one of the things I really liked about the movie was something I didn't even discover until I saw a KZbin video about it. There's a scene where the girl in the movie (sorry, I can't recall her name off-hand) is taking out the trash and Tiptoe Through the Tulips is playing on the radio (and frankly, the song is kind of creepy even without this video...I dunno why, it's just eerie to me). Apparently, there's a little boy hiding in the room she goes through after cleaning up a plate on the bed; I never noticed this when I first watched the movie, but it's a great little tidbit. Then, when the song starts as she's taking out the trash, she sees someone dancing in her house who isn't there when she goes back in. Granted, this isn't the most frightening part of the movie, but it really kind of is terrifying if you think about it. She literally walked right past that little boy and never saw him, and even a significant number of audience members (including me) didn't notice him in the split-second that he was shown. He couldn't have been more than a foot away from her, and he wasn't some monster or anything - hell, you could even just argue that it was a mannequin or some such upon which the clothes had been placed. But it's there nevertheless, and it gives the dancing guy in the next part of the scene some relevance. And of course, you still have jump scares like when she sees the bloody-looking face behind her husband in the kitchen that no one else can see. There are some good moments for different people who watch the film. One of the movies that honestly scared the shit out of me as a kid was The Shining. I had read the book, but I had also read Bram Stoker's Dracula at that point, and The Shining was the only book that ever gave me nightmares. Then, when I saw the movie, it was terrifying. The music was just right, and you kept expecting something to happen to the family - only it didn't. And then Jack Nicholson started going crazy, small things at first, and then it got progressively worse. And one of the scenes that scared me the worst wasn't even the scene with the twins and the blood (although that was very well-done, in my opinion); it was the scene where Jack's in the room you're not supposed to go into because it's an "evil fucking room" (yes, I'm quoting another movie here; sue me) and he ends up kissing a beautiful young woman - who he then slowly realizes is actually a hag. The scene was one of the scariest in the film, at least for me, at the time. The Shining is an example of psychological horror done right, in my opinion, especially when the black dude (I'm not racist, I'm just horrible with names) is trying desperately to get back to the Overlook Hotel; the tension of those moments in the film is amazing.

This is how I feel about many films across varying genres that are hated or misunderstood by mass audiences, what about storytelling? That's not a thing people value any more in cinema. Horror doesn't have to scare you to death to be a good movie. Sometimes it's about the story more than the jump scares.

The first Blair Witch was a good movie. A lot of tension building up, and you never see the titular Witch at all. Horror is best as the the less you see the better. Friday the 13th isn't scary, because it's just some guy (well woman. Or was that the second one?) who is unstoppable killing people you don't care about, where a movie like Session 9 keeps you on edge, because not only does the whole atmosphere just seem wrong, but it could happen IRL.

I've lost hope in horror movies a pretty long time ago and that's a shame. I think that if you really want to be frightened in a psychological way nowadays, you have to look at the videogame industry. There are the usual bad suspects like F.E.A.R. 3 or Dead Space 3, but ever since i played Amnesia: The dark descent or Outlast i have grown huge respect for this videogame-genre. You are completely defenseless in those games, facing tremendous horror and especially in Amnesia you will start to feel like you are in this situation yourself, fearing the light because something evil could see you, but also fearing the darkness because it slowly drives you insane and you can't know if you are walking towards a monster. The most terrible moment's aren't when you can clearly see a monster, it's when you DONT see one and you start to hear some subtle, weird noises.....

There's 2 types of person (in MY OPINION) Poe's and a Lovecraft's Poe's short story about the cat isn't about a feline...is about a man going nuts (psycological horror) the monster wasn't a cat was the man losing his sanity realizing the monster he was. Lovecrafts monster are goshts or a gigantic weird animal, is a tale of good man vs the monster outside. While Lovecraft reflects a "metaforical" reflection of some human "monster like" traits, Poe actually show the monster human CAN be and is inside all of us. For me, PERSONALLY, that's more scary (obviusly there will be creeps that won't see these tales as warnings or just entertaining but will turn them into role models -and then you have pyromaniacs and other BAD guys who DECIDE that) But coming back to average normal people wich type of horror story they like reflects what they believe about human nature. There's a saying that people concern that others are pshycos is because themselves are insane. I think goes the same with internal moster vs external monster (heck even when "hero" does questionable things -moster would do- to save the day is more interesting that a girl in panties running from a dude with an ax...) I personally don't really loved those films cuz those few that I've seen are a girl cutting troats half naked. Pass. Personally prefer reading like I mentioned, but the only show I liked for long and may be good to analize (I'm not sure wich genre is) Criminal mind's. The protagonist are not flawless or just running in circles. They actually fight with monsters everyday and not only external but they refer to themselves as monsters and that's why they are able to understand and catch them. The "fight" I think is what makes it relatable because it feels real. They're monster but they decide to be good beside all, that's a hero for me (not the punk teen who likes gore cuz his parents dissaprobe that and blames the world for his nasty behavior...sometimes those teens are 30 and go to see Anabelle) My point, everything goes back at your perception of human (born evil vs gone evil) the first reconize that even if he/she is a good person can turn into a monster cuz has innate bad nature and must be mature enough to not be a spoiled kid (is everyone's fault but mine, everyone is bad but me) and those who think the evil is only outside themselves like a shark or a creppy toy and don't see the potential of darkness in them In any case I think is not good obssesed over it. We already see the result of a generation over obssesed in themselves and is terrible. At the end any story, horror, romance, action, etc is merely to entertain us. I only hope that if not all but some can stay merely entertaining and not PC propo, for now I'm happy for still find good films in general in 2019.

The Main Problem With Todays Horror movies are the audiance themselves, They Think jumpscares are scary, studios listen, give it to them, they watch it and make it rain at the box office. it is really hard to convince todays audiance since unfortunatley they'd rather watch The Cell because its "oh so creepy looking and gory" rather than Rosemary's Baby because "its dissapointing because they didn't show the baby". i hope there will be a horror film in the future that will somehow revolutionize the genre and bring back psychological mindfuck horror.

Rose or maybe your problem is that you want to be entertained. And comparing a product selling to a movie is plain ridiculous. It's not some fucking product that has to appeal to the masses. It won't matter if a film fails to entertain. If a film fails to entertain YOU, then it's also on YOU! If filmmakers as a whole listen to you or our audiences, we would get endless Transformers and more stupid so called "horror" films like Ouija or Chenobyl diaries. Those hacks and big induatries that only make films for gaining money, should only care whether their target audiences should be entertained or else how would they pay their bills right? But those those filmmakers who make films because they love films and see them as more than just your "entertainment", there will be audiences who will recognise it and appreciate it. When people say that modern audiences are stupid, no matter how it deeply offends you, to a point where you think that the person is being some sort of elitist or whatever insults you can throw at them, take a look at the shitty films that make money and the scores audiences give to bad movies. Call me pretentious all you want babes, you are the part of the problem. And nothing will change that.

Completely agree. It seems that NO ONE knows how to make a good horror film anymore these days. The only one who truly seems to understand the genre these days is James Wan. Not only does his jump scares work, but the psychological terror combined with that is so powerful he leaves images in your head that you won't get out for a few days. Mike Flanagan did an excellent job with Oculus. Again it was something psychological disturbing rather than just you jumping out of your seat due to a false alarm or some scare that just doesn't work. What some people don't understand is that imagination can be absolutely terrifying. The fear of the unknown is what should be driving horror movies these days. Sadly it seems that more than half of film makers have forgotten that. Though thank heavens we have someone great like James Wan making great horror films!

I personally feel a huge problem with the horror genre that was maybe left out in this video is what's referred to as "torture porn". We as viewers have become so easily let down by the constant over exposure of creatures, murder and gore that in order to feel anything at all the audience has to be disgusted or disturbed. While I enjoyed "Saw" (the first film) and perhaps some of it's other sequels for their unbelievability I didn't leave the theater terrified. Just grossed out, at best. Horror mixed with imagination generates the best results. What we think and what we fear is far worse than what any special effects artist could come up with usually. So there's my two cents!

+Aaron Hartje I saw the movie "Martyrs" recently, don't know if you've heard of it but that film went beyond any torture porn movie I'd ever seen and just left me wondering why it needed to be made. Is brutality an art form? "Saw" took me about as close to the edge as I want to get with violence in my horror movies. Otherwise it distracts from the plot or becomes the plot....
@cobbler88
@cobbler88 9 жыл бұрын
Agreed. That's why I put forth that "Saw" shows us the edge, and I don't think that edge has been successfully moved even by the torture porn films that followed. And "Saw" might even be the only one from that genre that had a franchise that more or less successfully sustained itself. The others had basically zero audience by their second sequels. It's proven time and again that the harder-core the product, the less appealing it is to viewers. I think the key is how cheaply produced these things are. You can almost guarantee a profit in a foreign market with a targeted mode of non-theatrical release, I'm guessing.

What I have a problem with in horror movies - and this is strictly my own personal opinion, not a critique! - is when they get too supernatural or when the supernatural gets too powerful. When a ghost gets so powerful that it can do whatever it wants basically, lock every door and window, prevent all phone signals and physically manhandle a person, I lose interest. I just can't buy it. If we on the other hand look a movie like Child's Play, it's still basically a ghost that's killing people, but he still has limitations and has to use physical means to kill those people and they have a chance to defend themselves. It makes it a lot more interesting to me. Also, if a ghost couldn't do things physically, but could influence a person's mind or their emotions, make them angry and those around had to figure out what's going on, that's okay too, but movies like the Conjuring? I just laughed at it. Too over the top for me. As for the Babadook, I didn't mind that we never got to see it, I was satisfied with what we saw in the book, but the family was so annoying that I rooted for the Babadook the entire movie.

Non USA citizen here, this issue is well discussed in other countries and mainly concerns US distributed horror movies. The problem with current USA horror movies and foreign horror movies thinking of US market as their main target is their target audience. ==> Group of teen/college boys and girls, going to the cinema together to have fun. Now what kind of audience are they ? Usually loud, looking for fun, with short attention span, focused on the image they project rather than what they are, and full of hormones (therefore horror movies are good to stimulate "fear/sexual tension" receptors ~ Us distributed horror movie had to adapt to fill up their expectation: 1) Jumscares: They are here to remind them they are watching a movie and they should stop make-out in the cinema. Therefore you should put jumpscare. Preferably duuring the low intensity periods (this fucking cat, always jumping through the room for no reason ~) 2) Horror movie shoud be fun, ridiculously gruesome rather than really impacting psychologically speaking. The immediate WOW effect should be prioritized to make them talk about your movie on insta or whatever they are using. Good horror movies usually work on you for few days. You can't afford that time, you need to have immediate impact. 3) A distorted "show don't tell": They are paying for a show, you should give it to them. Bigger monster, more ridiculous death, simpler stories. They are not here to think. They are here to laugh and make out. 4) Harmless message. You don't want to traumatize them as any message or graphic hurting their feeling will be categorized as "bad". 5) "Who do you think I am ? A retarded kid ? No I am a college boy, playing football and I bang the hot cheerleader !" ==> Cliche but you get why they think "imagination is for kid" My USA citizen friends said Hereditary was a bad movie. They reason ? It's scary .... Yea, right .... What were they expecting ?
