Totally disagree about Thiago here. He has been the best midfielder in our team this season - both offensively and defensively. His defensive work is highly underrated, just rewatch the match against Leicester! Granted he doesn't have recovery pace but he is our best tackler and presser in that midfield this season. It's the other two in midfield who are underperforming.

Personally I agree with Ade. Thiago and Keita were brought in to help us break down teams when the parked the bus. Thiago to provide the perfect pass and Keita to run at defences. Thiago was not brought in to play every game at high intensity or chase back. With two/three quality additions it would bring out the best of Thiago, Hendo and Fabinho and prolong their careers. Spot on from Ade. I personally would like Liverpool to shift to a technically stronger midfield, than replace with another energetic trio alone. But the midfield is the biggest and main issue. They need 3 top midfielders. I'm worried about top 4 as well. Unless we start putting great form together, which seems unlikely, there are too many teams up there this year. It's crazy how we've had 2 massive breaks (WC and Queen) and Klopp hasn't sorted out anything.

Everyone knows the main issue is the midfield. We haven’t replaced Wijnaldum who left in 2020 and he was never injured. Keita and Ox are so injury prone and should have been let go in the summer. I mean Thiago might catch up to Keita in apps and he arrived 2 yrs after him. This is a problem that’s been neglected because FSG haven’t given Klopp the funds to keep the squad going and it’s now catching up with us.

But it’s not necessarily about needing all world class midfielders. We don’t even have midfielders except Thiago and Fabinho who can play on a high level with high intensity and can stay fit. It also doesn’t help that we have a lot of injuries.

The stats dont lie. Look at Liverpool's results with and without Henderson. When they lost 3-0 to Watford no Henderson. When they lost 7-2 against Villa no Henderson. When they lost 3-1 to Brentford no Henderson. No Henderson in the starting 11 when they lost at home to Leeds. Fabinho has been so poor this season. Harvey Elliot is not a CM. Milner is too old now. Keita is always injured every season. Their midfield is a mess.

Something else that wasn’t really mentioned is how poor our defence has been this season. Van Dijk has been a shadow of himself so far. Trent has been in and out as mentioned and yet we have no backup RB, playing Milner there instead. Only consistent player has been Alisson who has had to make some good saved this season due to how poor we’ve been defensively. Shambles this season. Bring back the World Cup asap.

Good analysis and in agreement with Danny Murphy. The EPL is about fine margins and if there are little drops it exacerbates little problems. Klopp definitely was wrong about moving on Ox and Naby in summer. But what is huge is Mo only has 7 goals and obviously Darwin isn’t scoring yet which are two huge problems. We have to score 20-30% more than we have, and if we did we wouldn’t be talking about this. Throw in Harvey and we lose a little pace for defensive duties. And then just overall we have been getting older and it is very evident by the metric of being out run each match usually. This was totally avoidable if we just brought in a couple of midfielders the past couple of years to refresh the squad. Not much just 2 for say a total of 70-80 mil max. Now we are caught in a horrible position again. Klopp gets too attached to players that have brought him success and is unable to move them on for the good of the team financially and otherwise.

I think in midfield, Fabinho has gone off the boil because he doesn't have hard pressing engines like Gini or a younger Henderson with him anymore, as a result his limitations are being exposed. Klopp also needs to be ruthless and trim the fat, sell Ox and Keita, hasn't really worked for either of them, injuries have played a big part, but Keita has never really shown anything in a Liverpool shirt. Ox has had his moments but has also been below par and is finished at the top level, as an Arsenal fan I was upset when we sold him to Liverpool but looking back I think we actually got his best years.

This Naby Keita narrative that people push is BS. Keita was our best player when he came on as a sub in the last few games. He was the only player shouting, pointing & looking for the ball and giving instructions whilst everyone else stood around and played sideways passes. It's been shockingly low the entire time under Klopp which is why it was so impressive what he did, however your exactly right it is unsustainable and eventually we were bound to fall off it looks like it came sooner then I thought. The "engine room" midfield of 2018-2020 may not have been dazzling to watch but they were fit and did their job. Liverpool's incredible scouting network can surely set their sights on pressures applied and availability and come up with some names that fit our system and, at that point, I trust Klopp to do the rest.

The best comment here. That engine was not pretty, but it worked. Winjaldum was an absolute workhorse. Really good in tight spaces, never lost the ball and occasionally scored an important goal. Henderson was also brilliant and Fabhino was a monster. We didn't replace Gini, now Hendo and Fabinhos legs are both gone.

Recruitment is both our biggest strength and our biggest weakness. A few years ago Liverpool fans were crying for a new cb after Lovern left, we didn't sign one and then VVD got injured and we had a terrible season. We've needed a box to box for a few years now with Hendo getting old and Wijnaldum leaving and we still havent signed one. But then we sign players like diaz, Jota, Salah and Gakpo who are amazing.

Honestly, I think a lot of Klopp's comments about the squad being fine is to provide a united front to the media. Saying 'we need players' could be seen as complaining publicly about FSG who Klopp has nothing but respect, whilst his employer refuses to invest in problem areas until it gets to breaking point, making Klopp's job harder; to get results on the pitch. FSG seem to be resting on their laurels, not Klopp. And also, Klopp always uses the opportunity to big up his players, and for young lads like Jones, Elliot, and for Origi and Minamino in the past, being backed in public as a big player does wonders for the confidence than for being left out of the 'top player' bracket of Salah, Thiago, Virgil etc

Massively because of negligence in the Midfield. Ox, Keïta, Milner, Jones are straight up not good enough anymore. Elliott, Carvalho and Bajcetic need time to develop. Henderson and Fabinho are well into their declines. Thiago is a great attacking midfielder with no defensive prowess. And then they never replaced Wijnaldum. This is all fucked because they will not buy a midfielder. I think Klopp needs to find a new tactic ontop of that because we are so predictable.

The algorithm of Mane's play-style is the missing link at most, here at Liverpool this season; his skills, assist- & scoring ability, spacewinning, speed, sometimes chaotic but functional and always imminent threat to the opponent's defence. BTW, we already knew that Liverpool's defence has been vulnerable in the past 4/5 years. Yet, what made the difference was their capability of producing much more goals than conceded, I guess. And that is why they won a number of trophies in the recent past years; CL, PL, WC-clubs, super - and FA-cup, EFL and CoSh.

Our biggest problem is that we have loads of runners but not enough technical players. Which means when they’re jaded we don’t have another way of playing. Thiago is the only technically world class player in our team

Totally agree with everything said. Thiago is probably my favourite player in the world to watch. However we have to face facts that he just doesn't fit in with a Klopp team, high press, quick one touch counter attacks. He slows our attack right down and can't track back or tackle. We are lucky that both Robertson and Tsimikas are such athletes on the left that they can get up amd down the flank, without too much help from Thiago

Great points however I note you do not mention FSG and their sell to buy policy. Do you really think Klopp is not aware of the issues in midfield. He has stated numerous times that LFC are unable to spend like other clubs. The main issue here is FSG and their lack of spending which Im surprised that you don't mention. Review LFCs net spend over the past 5 years and compare to other clubs. It pretty obvious where the issues stem from, FSG!

Midfield is an issue but not the only one this obsession with the suicidal highline and offside trap is also killing us. Klopp has alot to blame aswell for sticking with a defensive system which barely worked well when we won the league even that season we conceded bare chances.

liverpool have great attacking midfielders, none of which work in klopps system, the midfield are there to cover the fullbacks, which limits the freedom and creativity of the likes of jones, carvalho and elliott and to some extent thiago.

when you don't freshen up a key part of the team in about 4 years don't be surprised when it starts to look a bit jaded. Players aren't robots and this group has played an insane number of games over the past 4 years at a high intensity at some point that catches up to you as players age. It's negligence on Klopp and his team not to identify this issue sooner and act to make it better before it became a major issue.

The amount of injury prone players, that were already established as injury prone, that we've signed under Klopp is laughable. Oxlade, Keita, Virgil, Konate, Matip, Diaz and Thiago the ones currently in our squad. The loanees over the years from Caulker to Arthur. Previous players like shaqiri or pre klopp era signings like Gomez. You could almost make a starting 11 there bar a goalkeeper. It's almost as if the crucial report stat for us signing a player is being injury prone. Even though I like most of those players, a couple years into Klopps reign I noticed it as a trending issue and now look at us. How many times will Klopp and FSG let us have "forgettable seasons" when we should be punching with City with the players, coaches and manager we have. On top of all that, the work horse players we had were let go FOR FREE, Can and Gini, and then virtually free Mane. Honestly, our owners and manager deserve where we are. Absolutely ZERO foresight. This season is an exact replica of one we had recently, where we could only forget it because of heroic performances from nat phillips and a goal scored by our goalkeeper from a corner, helping secure top 4.

Liverpool ran out of energy before the end of last season, the quadruple was just a few performances too far with the intensity they played. Should have done a lot more strengthening last winter. If they’d got the quadruple done, they’d be immortalised now and any failure or beginning of a slow rebuild this season would have been a lot easier to accept
