It isn't that Trent is the issue, is the fact he plays on the right side of midfield with nobody to hit long range balls to. We have 0 width on the Left side, Foden comes inside, Tripper comes inside, Kane comes short. Whats the point in having a playmaker in midfield with nobody to switch the play to? Thats his best quality and we aren't utilising it. Either dont play Trent, or play him with better options to hit like Watkins over the top or Gordon in behind.

Trent made 1 mistake which resulted in a big chance for Serbia, he also made 3 passes which should've resulted in a goal for england if Kane Rice and Trippier were concentrating. He also had 3 shots on target and made the defensive interception which would've resulted in a goal for Walker could finish or cross better.

The easiest way to fix the Trent problem is to start Gordon on the left wing. His best attribute is his range of passing and Gordon’s for this England side is pace. Having that constant supply from Trent to Gordon running in behind will win the euros

@@mikem9309 easiest way is to keep attacking. germany proved similar profiles can exist on one team with the right tactics. southgate will have them press and go after a goal for 30 minutes, then switch them off once they score or the opposition gets too many counters. he’s so afraid of the risky football all of his best players play in the prem. guys like foden and trent have been alienated by him by him the last couple years cause pep and klopp taught them the opposite of his football

I’ve rewatched the game and I think everyone is going why too over the top over Trent’s “bad” performance. This was the first time Trent played that specific role. Southgate spoke about it afterwards, how he was more disciplined to allow Jude to go forward and do his thing (as he should) 2 misplaced passes, one of which he recovered, and lost possession a few times (less than some other players on the pitch) but overall it wasn’t that bad. I think everyone was watching him with magnifying glasses to see if he could handle it and that one mistake then led to everyone freaking out and overanalysing. Multiple players caused chances for Serbia, including Saka, kane, walker and rice. But for someone who has never played in that specific role before, I think he did quite well and will likely be much better on Thursday. Mainoo probably would have performed roughly the same cause he also doesn’t play that role in a double pivot. It’s why Gallagher didn’t have a great time after he came on. I’m not sure what Wharton’s specific position is at palace so I’m unsure. Southgate needs to work out how to play a midfield 3 that allows Jude to do this thing without exposing the 3rd midfielder because all of the options alongside rice are inexperienced or young in that double pivot role. The times Trent was able to be more free, he almost scored and created 2 chances in the space of a handful of minutes. It’s not a Trent issue, it’s a Southgate issue.

Trent had a better match rating than 7 of the other players. His mistake came from the ball being lethered at him and he took a slight heavy touch. The heavy touch was because of the pass. Simple as that.

During hte game I noticed often Saka was free on the right side but we dragged the ball down to the left and then would lose the ball. I know Saka was being marked but he was also waiting in position for passes. Unfortunately the few passes he was given was when we were dragging the ball down the right giving Serbia plenty of time to have two men on him.

Southgate’s big gamble is that Luke shaw comes back and plays well straight away and doesn’t get injured. Declan Rice is a huge issue that no one talks about, he is great at tackling and doing the dirty work, but on the ball he doesn't start a single attack, he needs to link play between the defence and attack or control the tempo of the game MUCH BETTER than he does. It causes us to lose so much possession no matter who we play. Im not a United fan, but i see so many similarities in the way Man United play this season, and Southgates England, and that is NOT a compliment.

Southgate didn’t plan on playing a left winger, it’s the only reason Rashford and Jack were left out, he is trying to play Jude and Foden like the way mancity did with debruyne and Foden towards end of the season, trouble is Trippier ain’t Josko, without Shaw I don’t see that working. Solution will be to play Foden Rice Jude in midfield to accommodate a proper left winger or drop Foden entirely, I still think Foden is the most intelligent footballer though, hopefully he can back it up with some grit and physicality over time.

first 35 mins we were fine but we disintegrated after that. Serbia were better for the second half and I’d love to know what on earth Safegates talks to those players at half time dressing room. We are so cautious and negative. Look Safegates is not a bad coach he just isn’t world class and inspirational coach. I don't know why Southgate thinks playing Bellingham as a 10 actually works out. He doesn't have the arsenal to be conducting the attack from the midfield. This guy is an 8. Foden should be the 10. Yes, he did have a horrible game, but if you set the team up in a way that uses his best abilities he will shine. A 3-4-3 or 3-1-4-2 is required for this side. AND PLEASE GET TRENT ON RWB OR RB. HE CANT PLAY ON THE HALF TURN, HE CANT PLAY THROUGH THE CHANNELS. HE AINT AN 8. IF HE WAS klopp wouldve played him there a WHILE BACK.

Did we really watch the same game? Aside of Jude and Guehi, nobody should get a 6 or higher. England was crap, mostly because of the system and most likely bad instructions, but... Trent was spraying balls to wingers with no pace. Jude instead of staying up front was doing the box to box thing to compensate for lack of Trent's spacial awareness in the midfield, and then died in the second half. Kane dropped the biggest stinker so far in his England shirt. Foden was getting bullied. Saka had 3 runs in the first half at the defence, a deflected assist, and died in the second half. Trippier was crap, he is not a left back and it showed. Aside of that 1 run in the first half, Walker was pretty much invisible. Oh yeah, Pickford was alright for the most part. Other than that there was no real cohesion in the team. No link ups. People were making runs inside the channels and no balls were being passed to them. Other times, no communication, two English players jumping for the same header in the midfield. No, Rory, it wasn't too harsh. It was balancing on the delusional.

You all hating on England yet Belgium and France have both struggle against lesser teams. Both didn’t look half as good as we did defending hence serbia only having one shot on target. Serbia may have had the ball abit more in second half but hardly done anything with it. Let’s take a look at spains World Cup win 2010, first game they lost 1-0 to Switzerland, second game they won 2-0 against Honduras and then the rest of the tournament they won every have only by 1 goal. Let’s not pretend England didn’t do well. We defended brilliantly and attacked well. We may have lacked being more clinical but Kane had an off night and foden wasn’t doing too well either but I guarantee we will win against Denmark with ease and Slovenia.

Saka had Walker (right footed) in support, Foden had Trippier (also right footed) on the left in support. How many passes did Walker give Saka? How many passes did Trippier give Foden? You mentioned how weak the left side was, the left is more than Foden. I think Foden had a poor game but it wasn't all his fault. Also when England were on top everyone including Foden were top class. The team dipped, trying to defend the 1-0 only Bellingham was fighting up front in the second half. No need to change a thing for next game except for perhaps the tactics, assuming we have more than one option that is 🙄🙄. I would give Kane 5 btw.
