I completely disagree with Marques here. All of my phones have been saved from drops by having cases. The key is the case protects the glass from taking the direct shock from a fall. You want that extra protection in case the phone slips out of your pocket or hand.

I used cases on my phones for years. Finally saw the light and started using my phone without a case. It makes using my phone a thousand times more enjoyable (and I say this as someone who was using a relatively thin case). My phone doesn't have a visible scratch on it despite the fact that I have dropped it a few times. Phones are pretty damn sturdy these days. You don't even realize how much you're compromising your user experience with a case until you try using your phone without one.

A pocket height drop will crack any screen if it lands face down. Most drops happen at pocket height I would assume, or off of a counter or table. Any cheap case at that height will have enough of a lip above the screen to protect it from that drop. Of course if you hit a rock or something your still fucked, but don't say cases are useless, that's just not true.

Phones are made to be quite resistant, what with all the gorilla glass etc. Even if you didn't have the case it probably would not have broken. I remember my old iPhone 4 was dropped down a flight of ~50 concrete stairs at a train station. As it tumbled down i didn't even run after it cause i knew it was a goner; no way could it survive. The only damage it had was a chip on the corner, the power button was stiffer, and it had turned off. If you do need to protect it, get a case that will do exactly that. Like the one he mentioned in the video. The standard cheap plastic cases do nothing.
@AdamOutler

*****, You are giving bad advice. You don't use cases because you have the luxury of getting free phones all the time, man. The only time a rubber case doesn't work is on gravel. They work great on hard surfaces. side impact gets spread out to an exponentially large size relative to the material and thickness of the case.

"Drop tests prove that cases don't protect your phone when you drop it." So that's why I've NEVER ONCE broken a phone despite countless drops onto concrete and asphalt when my phone was in a case and I see thousands of people out in public with shattered phone screens or see friends posting about how they dropped and broke their phone? I'd rather have a non-broken phone that I'm not concerned with on the rare occasion that I drop it (even screen down) than to have to buy a new one every 8 months when pieces of the glass start falling off like most other people. I can't even tell you how many friends I have that have broken their phones within a month of getting them.

+TheRealConcertKing I totally agree with you! Most people I know have shattered screens within the first 2 months of purchase, while my phone is scratch free & screen intact for over 2 1/2 yrs. I use the Otter box defender & current phone HTC1 M8. I'm a mechanic by trade and can't tell you how many times my phone has been dropped. Accidents happen at any given moment. Even getting out of a vehicle. Being a girl, my pockets aren't as big as men's, so protecting the phone that way is out. Purses aren't my thing either. lol
@iEmbraceU
@iEmbraceU 9 жыл бұрын
I don't think you guys understand what I'm trying to say. People with shattered phones are careless (for the most part; I understand accidents do happen). But like MKBHD said, cases cover up everything nice about the phone. So, I've had my iPhone 5 (the original throwback one) for 3 years with no case and haven't cracked the screen. I'm using myself as an example, but I know there are many people who feel confident enough to not have a case and are able to enjoy the fine edges/design. Also, you can get a skin to give yourself a better grip on the phone. This is my opinion but I respect yours have a good one

Actually a lot of phone cases absorb shock to protect the internals of the phone from taking the shock and rattling something loose, not just the Otterbox Defender. To only consider the aesthetics of your phone is ridiculous. Even smaller cases whether they be plastic or rubber stop the shock from travelling as far into the phone therefore potentially protecting your phone from internal damage that could be caused if no case is present.

A well built phone (specifically HTC and Apple) won't ever take internal damage from a normal drop. A cracked screen still works, so personally I think it's odd to ruin the aesthetics of a phone with a case, only in hopes of preventing aesthetic damage to the screen. However, i do like to put a case on if I am going in be in a particularly damage-prone situation. My point is also invalid for a waterproof case.

No you can't, dude. There is no possibly way that you can appreciate the phone's aesthetic qualities while it is in a case. The case covers all of it up. It might as well not exist. That being said, I appreciate the quality fo durability that my phone acquires while in a case that other people who use their phones naked cannot appreciate. All of my friends have phones with cracked screens. My phone, which has remained in an otterbox for 2 years, is just as beautiful as the day I bought it. I appreciate the time otterbox put into making the most durable case on the market, which is something that Marques cannot comment on. That being said, the guy making this video has been gifted all of the phones on the market for review, so if one phone goes down, he can just swap it out for another great phone. He doesn't know the struggle.
@MrPiikkipallo

ThoseWhoStayUofM I do think that phones look a lot better without a case. I mean when they release a new phone, most people will be impressed by the looks of it, and then later on just cover it with a cheap rubber/plastic case. That just makes no sense. These cheap cases will mostly only help against scratches, but at the cost of the looks, it seems like too much of a price. Then again I do use a case on my phone, even though I think it looks better without it, but at least it's a clear plastic case. I think skins are the way to go, they don't really ruin the aesthetics and you can also make it look your own, and still preserve the general factory looks of the phone.
@ThoseWhoStayUofM
@ThoseWhoStayUofM 10 жыл бұрын
MrPiikkipallo I've already addressed the idea that the peace of mind a good protective case provides is prioritized in most consumer's minds over something as shallow as aesthetic appeal. Visual stimulation is fleeting. A sunset eventually stops being so beautiful once you've been staring at it for 18 hours... ya know? (in a photograph or something)
@MrPiikkipallo
@MrPiikkipallo 10 жыл бұрын
ThoseWhoStayUofM I wouldn't be so sure about that, the only way something beautiful would stop being beautiful ( provided that it doesn't get worn or ruined ) by it being commonplace. Also, why would anyone stare at their phone for 18 hours? It's the same as buying an aesthetically pleasing car, it won't stop being pleasing to you, unless something better comes along. It just seems quite dumb to me, that people buy these nice looking phones and then cover them up with cases. The only reason I'm using a case on my phone is to try and avoid getting the back and the lense of the camera scratched. The design of the product goes to waste if just covered with a case ( depending on the case and the user ofc. ) This just how I feel about it. Anyhow, I do understand that people would like to increase the durability of their fancy phone even at the cost of its aesthetics, although I've seen some leather cases that seem quite classy. What I do not understand, are the people who buy the newest iPhone and cover it up with a cheap 5 dollar awful rubber case. I guess cases are good, as long as they look good and are of quality material, otherwise it's just off the experience of an luxurious product.

MrPiikkipallo When you first buy a new piece of expensive tech, you take ultra good care of it. You keep it shiny. You handle it gently. You're overly precautious. After a month, you're putting it in a backpack, sliding it across a table, throwing it on the couch or the bed, etc. Why? In this exact same way, you stop seeing it as beautiful. You just see it as a piece of plastic/metal that has a great deal of utility. If you don't, then you're the exception. However, if you're willing to be honest about it and stop bullshitting yourself, then you'll see that there is absolutely nothing wrong with putting your phone in a protective case, and that you're just being a pretentious, hipster, asshole.

My best advice is to put a case. The phone with time will get damage just by being in your pocket or by placing it on rough surfaces. A skin just protects it from light scratches not dents. The side of the phone will not be protected at all. Just as long as you buy a good case it will be in perfect condition and keep its value.

You should invest for the Moto G, I got that smart phone for $60 it runs with Boost Mobile, the plan I picked was $50 depends what plan you pick, in total for me was $110, the good thing I don't have a contract with any company I pay monthly $50 with a card, if you are a smart consumer like me you will go to a retail store pick a phone with a big enough saving from your wallet to $500 to $600 which is substantial for the consumer, Boost Mobile runs like that expensive AT&T company but free with contracts.

+Marques Brownlee I'm still hesitant to leave cases behind, specifically raised edge cases, like Speck. I have dropped my phone on its face multiple times without damage, and I do believe it is due to the raised edges. Along with that, the topic of dropping it on the corner with a rubber padding seems to save it more than bare impact. I believe your video should really just be about the plain rubber cases without raised edges or corner protection, and not cases like Speck that I have in personal experience seen save my phone. If there was a mix of somehow having a thin skin along with a raised edge and corner protected case, I would take that over anything.

I WISH I could go case-less. I mean, I'm an artist and I'd love to appreciate the design and texture... But I'm also going to drop it, multiple times, guaranteed. So the "just don't drop it" solution that some people suggest doesn't really work for me... And it's not like I'm a klutz or careless with my phone -- I'm the type of person who never creases the covers or pages of my books, always organizes the bills in my wallet and the folders in my bag, has never broken any carton of eggs, etc. But somehow, and some point, I know my phone will slip out of my hand, off my bed, or be knocked off a table... And I don't have the cash for a new phone every few months. And that beautiful design doesn't really count for much when the screen is cracked or the phone doesn't work.

I keep my phones for at least 2 years or more, too. I need them to last -- if I break the screen in the first 6 months I have it, I'm probably going to be using a phone with a broken screen for the next 18 months. Maybe a case won't stop my phone from breaking if I get it run over by a car or drop it from more that 5 feet up, but I've never done that -- it's the everyday small drops over 2 years that I need protection from.

okashi10 Agreed. A good example of how useful cases are - I had the Note 2 for 1 year. A pretty durable phone, being mostly plastic. I had to wait 1 week to get my case, and in that time I dropped it twice. The drops literally dented in a corner, removed paint, and another corner/edge was deeply scratched. After I got my case, I dropped the phone about 6-7 more times over a year... It had absolutely no damage from those drops, and most of them were from higher than pre owning a case.

tcw Same. The only time I've ever scratched a screen or damaged a phone was in the time before my screen protector/case was delivered. I have always used a case -- and screen protector -- on my phones. Sometimes my new phone arrived before my case did. Those were scary days of paranoia! Cases have saved me a few times, such as when standing up while forgetting that my phone was in my lap. I have a tip to share regarding case installation. Use that little lens cloth or microfiber cloth that came with the screen protector and lay that inside the back half of your case before putting it on your phone. It'll act as a gasket to snug up the fit a little bit, and prevent some scratches from slowly happening to the back of the phone touching the case or whatever contaminants find their way into your pocket and behind your phone.✅

Case user here. With all the manufacturers aiming to make phones thinner (how much thinner does a phone need to be right?), ironically most phones seem too thin to me now. For me this makes them harder to hold and handle. The case I use now honestly doesn't offer much protection if it were dropped (none really), but the extra grip keeps me from dropping it in the first place. Had this phone for 1.5 years and never been dropped. I can't tell you how many people I've seen with a nice 'naked' phone that is sporting a huge spider web crack on the screen from been dropped. They seem to just 'deal with it.' Couldn't do that. Manufacturers aim to make a phone look sleek and expensive but don't seem to do much to make it easy to hold on to. +1 for a case.

I feel like people who don't use cases are generally tech enthusiasts. I've never kept a case on my phone. To me it's just not worth it. I love how my nexus 5 looks naked, and I hate how a thick phone case feels in my pocket. Many people who love tech want to enjoy the phone as it was designed. It's more about the aesthetic feeling of the phone, not the utility. I can see why people want cases. They care about the utility and convenience, and don't want to deal with the hassle of getting it fixed if they break it. Of course, I'm just generalizing here. If I broke the screen I would just fix it myself, which would be a bit cheaper than buying a new one. Plus I enjoy opening phones up and working on them. So win/win, right?

Yeah I can agree with all your points here, I appreciate the look and feel of a phone naked, but I've always been much more focused on utility. I do enjoy the look and feel of the phone; though, until I stick it in a Defender before my butterfingers lose their grip. Sadly I can't afford to replace the screen every other week. Skins don't do shit. This video wasn't very good, sorry Marques. There are a lot of good ways out there to protect your phone without adding bulk to it, or making it appear ugly. You've managed to make the HTC M8 even uglier by putting that skin on the back, which just looks out of place and awkward, and won't do anything to protect your phone. I have a Spigen glass screen protector on my Nexus 5, along with an aluminum bumper, so it's still pretty well protected and thin. Chances are if you drop it, it will land on one of the sides, and the bumper will do the job just fine for that. Drop it on it's face, and any phone will just shatter. But most drops are on the corners.

Conner Neal Phone cases aren't a multi million dollar industry for nothing. To say that a case doesn't protect a phone is fucking absurd, and you're delusional if you believe that shit. My Spigen has saved my phone more times than I can care to remember, as well as my Otterbox. Phones usually fall on the corners, and any bumper will suffice to protect it. Decals look good to some and not to others. So they provide grip. So what? So do cases, and they actually help protect the phone, too. This is just an ad for the skins he uses, who are pushing them to market it more so they can get more sales. DaemoniumCC look man I don't really care about your success with your preferred phone case. If it's protecting your phone that is awesome. I was pointing out that the video wasn't saying that skins protect your phone other than for minor abrasions. I have known many people who have had cases on their phones only to drop them and have the screen shatter. Many cases are made for looks more than function. It is clear that you buy your cases in order to seriously protect your phone but many people buy them because they think they look good but they don't actually do much as far as protecting the phone. Many people also are pressured in to buying a case that they don't necessarily need from the retailer at which they bought their phone. You failed to see the point of the video- it was that cases mess with the aesthetic of beautifully designed phones. Which is true.

I like the way it feels in the hand, not to mention it's size is already ungodly enough without the addition of a bulky case. In my 7 months of ownership, I am proud to say there is not a single scratch on the phone, and that is coming from a heavy user. As long as users are careful enough with their devices, not dropping them every 3 seconds with greasy fingers like I see some people on the street do, their phones will be fine. Anyway, what point is there in preserving the phone and its resale value if it's never going to get used the way it's meant to? You may as well be renting the phone.

Michael why does it have to be a cheap plastic case? You can be as careful as you want, all it takes is one drop & that could be it... you should atleast have some type of screen protection

AAron Phones today are designed to absorb shock in specific areas. Phones in some cases are better off caseless than with the case, since the extra rigidity causes impact shock to be distributed through the entire body (especially the glass) instead of absorbed in a specific area. If my phone is damaged in an area that is not my screen, I can buy a new frame and back panel for $10 off eBay.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who prefers the actual practical functionality of the device and really doesn't care about the look... First thing I did when I got my S4 was put it in an OtterBox defender case, and I've never used it outside of that. I would also much rather have a slightly thicker phone with much better battery life...
@NedTheDread

Even double the thickness of the S4, to put a battery twice as large, in addition to the extra thickness of the OtterBox wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Yes, as you can probably tell, I use my phone a whole hell of a lot.
@blastingoff
@blastingoff 10 жыл бұрын
"slightly thicker" and Ottorbox defender case should never be in the same sentence. I have used most iphones and a fair few androids, I dropped a lot of them without cases and with cases, with the exception of the 50$+ heavy duty cases that make the phone feel like a brick they all took about the same amount of damage.

(yes, i'm over protective over my gears). I understand what mkbhd is saying here but accidents do happen when you least expect it. I have a friend who went skinless in his Nexus 5 and it fell out of his pocket as he was getting out of his car and the glass for his back camera ended up getting cracked. A case would have prevented that from happening. I know people can be very careful with their devices, and yes the design of a device is great to maintain by not having a case but I for one rather the piece of mind of a case. Just my two cents.

zach burke what was said above by yoooooooooooitsme is right. It had nothing to do with a rock. The camera comes out past the back of the phone and a case like the one I'm using would have protected it. I also have to say MKBHD has more phones than any normal person should so he obviously has no quams about dropping any phone. Build quality is somewhat important.

I also have to say there are decent cases out there. Tech21 makes a great line of premium cases that feel and look good but also very durable. I get the whole desire to skinless, but for me the build quality of a phone disappears after a week. Software experience is what is most important to me and a case protects that experience.
