social media isnt what most people expect and it can drain your entire day and get nothing done. My family didnt choose to have a channel I did and thats why I dont share them. They help so much and I do want to share special things but nowadays I want to protect their privacy. I love the phone idea. Im trying hard not to be on the phone for work stuff so its a challenge but You get your time and quality of life back when your not on your phone. Its amazing when you leave it behind how you feel better!

I love how you present your channel. I love to watch your journey in restoring your farmhouse, adding to your homestead and “simple”child rearing. I love that you don’t have the camera I your children’s face when they are having a meltdown. I know this is your job. Maybe it’s bc I’m 61 and have that many years of experience but I know without being told that before you showed us your bathroom reveal that you probably had to pick up the towels off the floor and clean the fixtures and film while babies were napping ( I have 8 grandchildren). When we try to take family pics it’s like herding flies. I don’t understand why people think you need to show us the behind the scenes. That’s not why I’m here anyway. I love to see your home as you present it. I’m not interested in seeing the bedrooms in a mess bc I’m smart enough to know that when you let your children explore their passions as you do, there is a disaster that comes along with that. You have such a lovely way of photographing what you give us as content but I know it’s staged. When people don’t understand that it blows my mind. You don’t owe anyone an explanation of why it looks perfect. When someone goes into a department store to buy an outfit they know the mannequin was prepared by placing the perfect handbag and shoes with the outfit. This is your job to earn a living to give your family the simple life they have. I know your husband works super hard on your homestead and helps with the children. I grew up on 40 acres. It’s a lot of work. Keep doing what you are doing bc it’s working for you.

EXACTLY, Rita! I have my own dirty bathroom and chaotic laundry, etc,..why in the world would I want to stare at a screen at other people’s messes? I come here for the simple, serene, pragmatic, calm, delivery of advice and commentary. I enjoy the simple, edited, classic look of a farmhouse with beautiful antiques being used every day. That is inspiring. I don’t want a housewife’s version of Jerry Springer…complaining about messes and life’s stresses. I think Lisa has a great way of balancing real life with inspiring organization.

I took a TERRIBLE trip with a friend. Snot, tears, kids, family, such a hard trip. Facebook told the story of our amazing, sunny, shiny trip. Half of the participants seem to have made that version their reality. So interesting.

I think it would be hard to be on social media especially with a family. People just expect they can know about your private life. The line has to be drawn somewhere. Boundaries are key. If I had a channel, I would be protective of my children's privacy.

I did this!! The dumb phone, that is. I was a baby Christian and struggliinngg. I had gone through abusive situations as a young child and habits were formed. This is as vulnerable as it gets I suppose, but I was struggling with pornography. The dumb phone was my answer. I can thankfully say, I have an iPhone again and no longer struggle!!! Praise God! I felt like the odd duck, people did give me strange looks, and oh my word, navigating without google maps was so hard. But I wouldn’t trade that time for anything! I am no longer a slave to that sin! I would do it again if I needed to and I’m proud of you for being a doer of the word, not just a hearer of it. I look forward to hearing about your success with it!

It's incredible how attached we are to our phones. I have trouble not checking mine any time I have a spare moment and I am so concious that my kids are watching me do it. When we go camping and our phones don't work because of poor service I actually feel relief that we can just be together without all the distractions. Great idea and thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much. It was funny but I saw myself answering in advance your comments on social media, achieving things and when you said you only needed to care for... I did answer God 😊 . I really relate. You are so inspireing. I Thank God that I found you. Eventhough my nest is already empty I relate. I had a brown swiss cow I loved. I did butter and share it with my coworkers. I worked as a programmer in a high tech computer company. Kind of two different world. When I got home I took care of the house chores, kids, dinner, kids:(3 boys and a girl) homework and the cows , calf, and other farm animals. My husband work night shift , me day shift. Now I look back and think how was I able to do all that. On the weekend I played and sang in 2 different church services and had a youth choir, for the one we had practice on saturdays. I loved and still do to cook from scratch, sew for all of us, do crafts with my children and and the church kids too. Life changes, the nest gets empty. Now I cook just for me, but is the same eating healthy, cooking from scratch, being enviromental concience, reusing, living with less. This past year I started to lower all my inventories and letting go of things. It's Life cycle. 😊 I do want to be able to fence the farm and benchmark from your experiences with the farm. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for opening your door to us. For being so kind and shareful. Your channel is a delight. May God bless you and your family in every endeavor and grant you with beautiful experiences throughout this 2022.

Wow, all that you do! As an older mom of a big family who had a busy life, I think it is important to put space around events in our lives. To have a little quiet. Social Media removes that space and quiet. I hope this works for you and your family. I think you will feel more peace and balance.

The phenomenon you are referring to is Being Phoney. That’s a term no one ever uses anymore. Most people probably think it has something to do with an iPhone! Anyway, people being phoney, meaning presenting a rosy, unreal view of themselves, is an age-old phenomenon. The medium for it has changed, but not the underlying human need to feel like we are better than others. Better dressed. Better relationships. Better children. Better homes. There’s nothing new about this.

Such a great video! I'm one of those people who didn't not know about this channel. I watch your other channel and one day your podcast showed up on my suggested videos. So what I have gotten from all of this is that OMG You're human! I know that sometimes social media can really depress people because they wonder why everyone else's life is just so perfect. I know this video will help someone and I certainly thank you for that It's been a long time since my children were home and you have even made me look back and feel better. Thank You.

You could consider getting a Garmin or TomTom for directions in the car if you don’t have a navigation system. That’s the one thing I’m worried about “missing” upon switching to a dumb phone, which I am also heavily considering.

Congratulations on #100! Assumptions are never good. None of us really know what goes on behind closed doors. I would have never thought your husband doesn't help out enough. He's always building so much around your farm. Homeschooling the kids etc etc. Not my business either! You have a nice family and all of you work very hard. I wish I had your energy! I very much enjoy your cooking videos, renovations antiquing (wish there were more but I get how busy you are) gardening - projects - all of your animals. Because of you I found out about blue/green eggs. And I found a farm near me that actually sells them. The yolks are a dark orange and super delicious 😋. Also the raw milk and goats milk..here in New York I don't have a lot of farmers or information. Now I have water keifer, raw milk keifer, smoothies fermented foods and sour dough starter all actually work well! Thank you 😊

One of the things I like best about your channel is that you are real. You may not show the mess beyond the camera frame or show the kids misbehaving or whatever, but you do talk about it and remind us that you are a real person with a real life and life is messy. I post mostly on IG and most of my "followers" (I don't care for that terminology in the social media sense...) are homesteaders, gardeners, farmers, herbalists, etc. I post pics of delicious foods that I make, herbal remedies all bottled up for the shelf, and lush garden pics. I started to get comments about how good I am at these things~~so when I spent time cooking, I took a shot of the dishes piled in the sink and along the counter tops. I captioned it saying something like, "I am forever posting all of my successes in the kitchen, garden, and apothecary. Here's what's happening beyond the camera frame. I'm real." Recently I was talking to my daughter in the kitchen and not paying attention and I stepped into a basket of eggs that were sitting on the floor waiting to be washed. My foot got caught in the handle and I hopped around the kitchen with eggs slinging everywhere. I took a shot of the aftermath and poked a little fun at myself. Eggs everywhere~~sometimes it be like that. ;) I've heard it said that when we view social media, we compare "their" best again our worst. "Their" clean, cute home against our scratch 'n ding furniture and threadbare rug. "Their" perfect Pinterest cake/casserole/whatever against our boxed mac 'n cheese. "Their" lush garden against our "I have no clue what I'm doing yet." attempts to grow something. I wish we could all just be real. I would love to have a YT channel or some other outlet for my own creativity, but I don't feel photographic enough to be on film. I mean, I shouldn't care. If my channel were to be about growing food, herbal remedies, etc.~~who gives a rip what I look like?! Who cares that I have an Appalachian accent?! Who cares that I'm not a pro at filming or photography?! I guess I do because "they" make it look so good and I feel like I couldn't cut it. Thank you for shedding some light on this issue. Great video. God bless!

I myself don’t have a large amount of self control when it comes to my smart phone and I have considered doing exactly what you are talking about. Getting a flip phone type deal. I love that you've talked about this, Lisa - it is so true! A photo/video can be very deceptive - I hope people can use this wonderful and truthful explanation about social media and apply it to their minds when it comes to mainstream media, celebrities etc... question everything you see and hear -is that really what's going on? - or is it a 'story' being applied to an image(s)? The only thing I can say is everyone has problems but really each person is entitled to what is called privacy. All the people who watch you guys like you for sharing the special things and the looks. Me personally I don’t care about what things you would like to keep to yourself and are entitled to do because last time I looked ,this for the moment is a free country. We are all not stupid to realize you guys ups and downs as all humans have. We love the information and the way you deliver it and how sweet you are and your so energetic. You are a great motivator and give great inspiration. We love your ideas. We just like you. We don’t need to every time you do something that’s all. So don’t go crazy with the explanations we all understand.

Thank you for sharing This! Also I laughed out loud when you said the assumption thing lol, people can be so mean. I also 100% agree with people filling in the blanks in videos, I have had people tell me my family doesn't help clean or they can't believe I didn't help my husband carry something 😂, when they have no idea what just happened 10 minutes before or after that video clip. Great conversation!

We have to wonder why we care so much about what other people we don't know think of us. Twitter is the worst.

I cannot wait to see how this “dumb phone” route goes for you! Social media is such an issue for me. It sounds like a great idea and I look forward to your update.

I have wanted to get rid of my cell phone! I get so mad at myself. It is literally a comfort to me though sometimes. Like when I am scrolling I fall into this zone where I’m just content and it feels like stress is just dissipating. Why is that?? I don’t want it; I want to be productive, and when I sit down in my favorite chair and scroll, I can forget accomplishing anything. It’s truly a thief. Anyway, this video resonated with me. How did you order your “dumb” phone? I have seen where some Jews call it a kosher phone. Just an observation I made.

Yes! I have tried to buy a Candy bar phone but cell phone providers don't want to provide services to it. Please share, I want to do this... Thanks!

Also, a podcast idea I thought of recently. Did you and Luke have many discussions/plans/ideas about how you would like your life to be before you were married ? Or did all of the farm/kids/way of life come to be slowly over time? We’re you both always on the same page financially, and do you ever disagree on things to do with the farm, like, getting a cow or goats? If so how do you work thru that 💙

Tonight I had several projects to get done. What did the majority of my time go to? Scrolling Facebook. 😪 Now I feel behind. I need to sign off Facebook on my phone and iPad.

And about suggestions for the podcast or others- I saw one or two videos about giving up the smartphone for a month and how did it work- so this can be something interesting (I admit that I also thought about getting a regular cellphone).

I feel bad that you need to buy a dump phone to not have to deal with negative comments from the different media you are on. I love to watch you and your sister. Love you both. In my opinion we should only lift each other up in the media world and give inspiration to each other

I'm an indie author, and I try to be transparent on my social media. I don't give away personal info, but I will say "It's a struggle today, but the sun is beautiful.." or something like that, and I've noticed I get a lot of interaction saying "I'm struggling too!" and people get to talking in my comments and it opens conversations. I also follow accounts that are more transparent and don't just only post highlight reels. I think, especially now, people want less of just the pretty photos and more relatability.
