When we only had 2 kids, my husband was pretty adamant that he was too tired, kids were expensive, he didn’t want more. I had to search my own heart, and prayed often that God would align our hearts; either that I would be content or he would want more. Lo and behold, we now have 4 kids, we have been in complete agreement in every season since then about having more babies/putting a pause on/feeling full. I always encourage people to pray not for their will to be imposed on their spouse, but that God would align you both under *His* perfect will for our lives.

Praise God! That was with us as well. My kids started praying and my husband went hunting. He told us " I didn't see a deer but I heard from God!! " not audibly but in his spirit. He said "God impressed in his heart , who are you to decide how many kids you will have??" I had 5 miscarriages but ended up having 4 more kids. 9 living. My last was at 44. And was a 1.7 oz micro preemie. She is now 12. My oldest is almost 36. I homeschooled 35 years.

I'm 38 and unmarried. Coming from a family of 13 (2nd oldest), I always imagined I would be living my life much like you, Lisa. Ironically, I'm living my plan B life as a nurse (an occupation I truly love and allows me to be a caregiver), but also preparing myself for marriage and children if God has that in mind for me. It's really easy to get discouraged, but focusing on the Lord, learning new skills, doing things for others, and having a thankful heart for what I DO have is such a huge help to shift my perspective. Thanks so much for sharing in your podcast!

I didn't meet my husband until I was age 37 and he was 41, both of us never married and no kids... not by choice of delaying those things but it was just how God orchestrated our journeys. Then we met while being 2000 miles apart doing ministry and now we just turned 40 and 44 expecting our first child to be born in two days! God's timing is perfect. Not our will but His. Fix your eyes on Jesus, put your desires on the altar and into His sovereign hands, trust that if you desire marriage, a good and godly desire, it will happen when He sees fit.

Regarding pain during nursing: I read somewhere that during your last month of pregnancy you should rough up your nipples with a towel every time you dry off from your shower and they will be used to the wear and tear of nursing. That same pain lasted 5 weeks with my second, 2 weeks with my third, and no pain at all by the time I latched my fourth. I never supplemented or pumped because I just didn’t consider any backup options. I just powered through. It made the first year of feeding my babies much easier because after the initial pain, there was no cost to me and no prep involved. We can do more than we think mamas

I have so much less stress and anxiety and my babies are chunky and healthy. It's easy once you figure it out. I agree with the advice to just keep going. Obviously, watch for any signs of malnourishment or issues( they would be really obvious) and address those if they come up. Schedule feeding was the best thing that happened to me. If you're one of those people that needs your sleep to function, babies will naturally sleep through at about 6 weeks once you give them a schedule and their circadian rhythm gets set, ie their body clock. Katie Voetberg's mom had 11 babies that all slept through at approx 6 weeks. My 5 did as well. The stress that Lisa describes is something all new mothers feel, whether demand or schedule feeding. Here's the deal. I got stressed out at first, too. For the first week, while your milk is getting established and your learning to latch, just focus on that. Then, start to work gently toward a 2.5 to 3 hour space between feedings. Eat. Have a bit of wake time while you burp, cuddle, bath, or diaper change. Play. Swaddle or pacifier and put baby down for nap. Sleep. I try to watch for over stim signs during the wake/play time: hiccuping, sneezing, eye rubbing, fussing. Put them down while still content from feeding, but not crying from over stim. Then repeat eat, play, sleep during the day. At night, do not wake for feeding. Let them wake you up. There is no set schedule. But keep things dark and chill to send the signal that nightime is different than day. Feed and put them directly to bed (diaper if needed). Little by little, they get in a groove. They start to drop night feeds without CIO or force. Then, around 6 weeks, they just miraculously sleep through. The stress I created was trying to stretch my newborn to 3 hours right away. If they wake up from their sleep at 2 hours (from beginning of last feeding), go ahead and nurse them. Once they're awake and feel their hungry tummy, they will scream till you nurse them. Don't let that happen. At night, hesitate when they are stirring to determine if they are in an active skeep cycle. This means they might be noisy but not fully awake. Often, if you don't pick them up immediately, they'll go back to sleep. Of course, if you love attachment parenting and demand feeding, do what works for you. If you need sleep, don't feel guilty!!

My mom didn't have a strict schedule with my older brother and sister, but once I was born and later my little sister, we were on a schedule pretty much from day 1 because my older siblings were in school. So we had to get up and be fed at the same time every day. While the older two took several months to sleep through the night, my little sister and I both slept through the night at 6 weeks just like you experienced. My mom also didn't turn on lights and didn't talk to us at night. She wanted us to learn the difference between day and night. So nighttime she fed us/burped us/changed us quietly and in the dark and put us back to bed. She always swore that that also helped along with the daily schedule.

Im not sure I understand your advice. I've never fed my baby at night unless he was actually awake and wanting to eat. He is 5 mo and will wake 2-3 times per night. I also never turn on any sort of light (unless he has a poopy diaper, I want to make sure he is completely clean), and I do not usually talk to him either.

@@Mt4evr Do you stick to the same daily routine? As in getting up at the same time every day, having feedings and naps at the same time, etc? Because my mom had older kids who had to go to school, my little sister and I were on a daily schedule from the day we were born. We got up at the same time and nursed, then were put in the car to drive the kids to school. And my mom fed us on a schedule. The hind milk has the most calories, so she made sure we would completely drain one boob before switching sides, and at the next feeding would start with the side that didn't get drained. And both of us slept through the night at 6 weeks while our older siblings didn't. But they weren't on a strict schedule like we were because my mom didn't have to get us up at a certain time.

I agree about the nursing dilemmas. My brain never could wrap around the idea of pumping and supplementing to fix “bad” milk supply and latch. That doesn’t make sense! It’s supply-and-demand and baby is learning so supply will naturally drop low low and will go high high at the start and that’s NORMAL. The doctor always advised pumping and supplementing after asking about supply, and I’d politely set that idea aside and side with common sense. Stick with it and trust the process (as long as baby is getting milk and gaining the weight) you will figure it out. He’ll clutter feed more when he is hungry and the supply will shoot up naturally. So best advice is to trust the process and relax. ✨also I shocked the mamas at the library baby-time sharing that I’d like, God-willing, to make our family of 4 a family of 7 (or 9) one day. I shared that I’ve heard many people, like you mentioned, regret not having MORE children and thinking about what could have been. They agreed to hearing the same! I’m open to all the children! This is coming from someone living in a small 2-bedroom condo. We will stack the bunk beds if needed. Children are WORTH it! 💗✨

It's so weird that hospitals are pushing supplementation now. When I had my first two babies in 2002 and 2004, bottles and pacifiers were strictly forbidden for fear of "nipple confusion." No one ever suggested supplementation. My babies were not jaundiced and did not lose too much weight, so maybe that is why. Even when I had my fifth and final baby in 2014, the only intervention that was suggested was vitamin D drops. Maybe the hospital was more hands-off because I was an experienced mother. My friend's daughter had her first baby last year and everything was going perfectly with breastfeeding and they STILL wanted her to supplement with formula. I have my suspicions why that is being pushed now, but that is a topic for a different time.

I was breasfeeding my first but my milk was too runny, lacked enough nutrition for her to grow properly so I had to supplement. For my second I did more research and continued to take my prenatals after birth and my milk was so different, thicker, stickier and my second girl got nice and chubby with my milk alone. I have a feeling that because food is no longer as nutritious as it used to be due to soil depletion a lot more women can't produce rich enough milk to feed their babies on their milk alone. Just a thought.

For fitting a lot of kids in a smaller vehicle safely the ride safer travel vest can be a game changer. If they are of age to safely sit forward facing the vest is safety rated comparable to a 5 point hotness car seat. In fact it is more safe than trying to cram car seats in too tight of a space and not following correct installation for the seats. They also are wonderful for travel where you might need to rent a car or use Uber.

Regarding breastfeeding pain: I had pain the first week or so after having all four of my children. It always goes away without me even noticing and I’ve been breastfeeding for over six years straight at this point. I think it may be a hormonal thing. Breastfeeding during pregnancy has been really painful as well. I don’t think breastfeeding pain is always associated with a bad latch. Thanks for addressing this!

Lisa, know you heard the saying health is wealth, it's a sad reality, but it happens often when getting older: metabolisms get sluggish, and you have to find a new normal routine to stay at a normal weight. Being overweight leads to illness. It's just easier to stay at a normal weight finding which new routine will work can be annoying, but once you find it worth so much because the results are worth it!😀

Metabolism gets sluggish because we start to lose muscle mass after 30 or so. Actively contend for it!!! Purposefully lift heavy things every day. With all the muscle groups. Game changer!

Had pain for about 2 weeks breast feeding all 4 of mine. I used the shields (because I am NOT tough with pain). After two weeks the latch was figured out and the shields came off and it was prettysmooth sailing. I did pump a lot for my first (because they told me I needed too) and had an oversupply that led to clogs pretty often. Easiest experience so far was the fourth…I just decided to do all the feeding myself (poor hubby), but no clogs, no issues at all.

Thank you Lisa. I love this podcast, so many wisdoms and tips. As a mother to only one child, i constantly need the reminder to not worry about making the child happy every seconds. And your brief story about your miscarriage, hope to hear more about it. I went thru 2 miscarriage and I also feel every passing months i feel defeated because of the hormone imbalance and failure to get pregnant again. During the miscarriage it can feel hopeless and scary and because it rarely talk about, it makes me feel lonely and confused.

This is my first video I’ve seen from you but thank you so much. I love your perspective and on the last point, I think it’s something we have lost in society to teach young women, future homemakers to be just that because now most of society focuses on school and career for everyone.

Thank you for mentioning that for some mommas pain is just part of the breastfeeding journey. I’ve breastfed 3 kids so far, ranging from 2-3 years. With each baby I experienced so much pain the beginning, including bleeding, scabbed nipples. I was told that this was not normal, but I’ve learned that for my body, it is. I know if I push through the first 3-4 weeks of excruciating pain, and once my nipple skin “toughens up”, that it will mostly be smooth sailing from there. For some moms, that’s just how it is!

I have 3 stepsons and 3 children by birth. I always wanted more by birth, atleast double but that wasn't the case. We talked about children and I have 2 more children that my husband wanted. It came at a price and that price was costly. BOTH parents must be in agreement. A warning about the bible. Using God's word to manipulate YOUR will never works. Instead, we must stand on His word for HIS will in our family. At 52, I still struggle with that principle. To the mama who wants more kiddies and the husband doesn't seem to feel the same, Lisa is spot on. She has such wisdom to be a young mama. I have learned so much from her though my youngest has just graduated at everyone is grown and gone (the knee baby is in/out of the house). This is one of my favorite channels because of her calm, wisdom and recipes!

For breastfeeding, I would highly encourage others who need help to talk to a lactation consultant. I wish I did because my nursing journey with my son ended at just 5 weeks. I ended up exclusively pumping until 5 months and I absolutely hated it.

I wish someone had given me the advice you gave the young homemaker when I was in that stage of life. But it's never too late, so I enrolled in a class and I'm trying to start a garden. The only thing I realized held me back was my fear of failure, but I failed none the less because I did not try.

I hear this a good deal with sourdough bread...so many fear failure and therefore don't try. The best is to hear from those that tried and worked through their failures and now make sourdough effortlessly! You will learn from your gardening experience each season.

I'm seeing an epidemic of tongue ties. I read somewhere it's because our nutrition and multivitamins are causing a central line something or other strength in ligaments etc (I need to Google this). So, babies have these excessively sinewy strong tie on their tongues now. Have you heard this at all?

I only had pain with my first. It was due to engorgment. Just the first few times she latched on. I didn't get engorged with my second as I didn't get as full, or my body understood like oh this is happening again. Either way, I only hurt for the first few times with my first. 😊❤
