This problem has affected the indie space for a while now. Nothing kills my desire to play a game faster than hearing the level design isn't handcrafted. I know algorithmic generation doesn't necessarily mean "lazy," but it does make me feel like I'm fighting a computer, not an environment.

The problem always is if you give a game the same title and make a game that looks so similar to the original game it’s almost impossible not to have the same expectations if not far higher. I think the fact there was such a long period of time between when they talked about it six years ago and it finally coming out didn’t help at all. It’s no cyberpunk 2077 but I do think they did themselves no favors at all.
@domskillet57444 жыл бұрын
I actually really prefer the art style in the first game as well. The shapes in this game are excessively pronounced with bold outlines, and are awkwardly separated, and thus look and feel very static and artificial. It looks like an IOS game like Angry Birds, and has a more kid-friendly look about it. The original had a subtle naturalism and grittiness to its art design that seems completely lost here.

I gave it a shot but its just such a departure from the original I can't bare myself to even enjoy it, when it comes to the presentation and the humor its everything I wanted. The Auto run aspect just kills it for me which is a shame since it turns a precision platformer into an RNG type of hitting your head into a wall. Especially during the boss fights, this mainly occurred during the brain that throws shards of glass at you yet on several occasions in that fight the game placed me into a position where I had no other alternative but to die. It didn't matter how fast I reacted at some points the Auto run and lack of control placed me into positions where the game only could kill me with no way to mediate that. It turns what was a fantastic yet fair challenge into a game of mere trial and error, when the game kills you through no fault of your own because of a gimmick that is where I draw the line personally because it doesn't make it fun, it makes it a chore and a grind to play till the game puts you into a position where you can succeed. Compare this to the original in which every death was a mistake you made because of how precise the controls were, it motivates you to overcome every challenge as you can see where you went wrong and overtime you improve your skill and proficiency in controlling Meat Boy.

"Every playthrough is procedurally generated" You can't look at a speedrun community for this game and say with a straight face that's a good decision
@xwtek35054 жыл бұрын
It's bad only because Super Meat Boy is a precision platformer. Gamers do love procedurally generated playthrough for some genre like casual puzzle and roguelike. What they have in common is that you are supposed to face the unfamiliar. Playing the same puzzle multiple times is boring and playing the exact same playthrough of roguelike game is missing the point of roguelike. On the other hand, you are supposed to replay SMB level multiple times to learn how not to die and later optimize your run.

You hit the nail on the head about why I don't care for Rouge-lites and auto-generated levels: rarely do they have tightly-crafted sequences whose layouts all feel purposeful, more often challenges feel unbalanced and other elements are lacking or overcompensating.

There’s definitely a spectrum when it comes to the level of thought that goes into various rogue lite level chunks. These certainly felt a lot more intentional than many I’ve played.

theres only a couple good rougelikes. and thats ones that actively take advantage of the fact they are easily replayable. They are often designed to be short pick up and play games, Usually averaging around 30 minutes - 1 hour for a run. Designed to be balls hard but easy to start new runs and improve your knowledge of the game. While adding new things to the mix to make sure you never get bored while learning it. Stuff like Gungeon and Isaac (Ironically). Doing full games that are randomly generated like this don't work well.

@@ceej5690 most of these critiques are general and in a general sense make s lot of sense, but when it comes down to the actual game SMB Forever I feel like they fall kinda flat. These don’t feel like boring generic procedurally generated levels, they feel just like a ton of levels in a game that normally would have a lot fewer, resulting in a really interesting play and replay experience to me. I do love Gungeon, though. Still haven’t picked up Isaac yet, but hopefully it’ll go on sale evebtually
@steel58974 жыл бұрын
I like rogue-lites and procedural generation, but NOT for platformers. Obstacle platforming is essentially made up of tightly constructed sets of elements for you to navigate and master. Platforming is very similar to playing music, at its best it's rhythmic and cathartic. Procedural generation is basically the antithesis to that, it's wholly incompatible. Procedural generation shines in games with more emergent and free-form gameplay, not tight obstacle platformers.
@steel58974 жыл бұрын
@@garrettvandenberg2031 I think it actually hurts replayability. In platformers, the joy of replayability comes from mastering the courses, and this is done by optimizing the levels until you can do perfect runs from muscle memory, which is not possible when levels are randomized.

After beating the game, I definitely can say I had a lot of fun with the game. Like, I unironically think it's in my top 5 games of the year. The game improves so much as you go on, because solutions become more well thought out and complex. I think levels feel more well crafted as you go forward, although I do think the random generation can lead to weird difficulty spikes. I feel like a lot of people will discount the game for being an auto runner, but I think it was a really good and unique decision given how cool some of the later mechanics are, especially those from world 4.

2 things that they need to fix to make the game even better is 1. At least make the auto runner optional 2. Make it to where we can play every level in one world instead of 6 randomized levels. Those are the two changes I want outta this game. Then we’ll talk
@etienvincent54884 жыл бұрын
I played hundreds of hours speedrunning the original super meat boy and only played 3 on the end is nigh, because of the mechanics. I feel like SMBF is a way better successor to the original game because it keeps the same tense and fast pace gameplay. It even exacerbates it with the auto runner principle that forces people to have perfect timing and no time to breathe. About what you say about the random generation making the game and levels feel like there wasn't really a real intention behind them. I would disagree, i followed the devellopement process from a distance on their discord server and what came out of it is that, despite the sections of levels being randomly picked. These sections all belong to one specific level, having one main goal/feel/mechanic. We can mostly see that in the last part of the 3h long preview live on the Team Meat youtube channel. In this tommy shows the level editor and we can clearly see that behind each level are many examples of the same mechanic and idea, that will be indeed "randomly" put together. TLDR: i feel like the sense of togetherness of a level is more of a personal feeling that you get when playing than a real downside to the game.

The endless runner thing definitely put me off this game very fast admittedly but at the same time, I can see why the team wanted to do something different with this game since it would've been very easy for them to just make Meat Boy again but with different levels. I also hate that people will see this game and automatically assume its a bad game and will destroy others who think this game is good. It feels like the reviewers and people like I’m talking about are spiting at a game that they worked on for almost seven years plus a game that they scraped in 2017. They worked super hard on this game. Sure you only get three buttons but the way they mapped the controls is that you can have something like 20 different commands. Also, most chunks have a skip of some sort. It’s not as linear and simple as you think it is. This game is a sequel sure but its trying to be different and it works. You have to actually try the game and get through it in order to give a proper review. If you say its shit by that point, fine, at least you played through the game. Also, the cutscenes are amazing. I had my fun during my initial playthrough however I did unfortunately skip 2 levels in the 5th world because there was two chunks I could not figure out how to get through. Normally, I would play the section at a slower pace in order to figure out what I’m doing wrong, but due to the auto run mechanic I’m not given that option thus I skipped. Beyond that the only other thing that bothered me was dying due to being unable to switch directions after a bad timed jump. In the original I could stop myself and adjust my momentum to land somewhere safe and think. I kind of did that a lot before I started to go for A + rank. Overall, I found forever to be a good meat boy experience. Presentation was beautiful and gameplay was still engaging and addictive when you start to achieve rhythm and flow. I still see the game as a spin-off though that still holds its own in the Super Meat Boy series.

Although your opinion is fair and understandable, I can't help but disagree slightly. Each chunk that composes a level has been handcrafted, and the game took so much time to be made because they crafted thousands of chunks to make sure the game would be replayable. The chunk might seem not very well designed in the first chapter, I guess it's because they had very few mechanic to build hundred of chunks with. But in the later chapters, I think the level design really shines. I'm just a bit sad to see so many people not even trying the game out because it's an auto-runner or because the levels are procedurally generated, while it's one of the first big platformers trying to change the formula since years now. Of course, the game isn't perfect, but I'm really glad they didn't stick to a classic platformer, because we just have so many of them in 2020.

I felt the same way about SMBF as with this video. It's a game that can stand on it's own and stuff, but don't jump into the game expecting the same thing. As for a Super Meat Boy 2, you can always check out Super Meat World, which came back up in 2018 and has thousands of user generated levels and chapters.

Sorry, but Super Meat Boy just isn't the same without Edmund McMillen and Danny Baranowsky. It's a shame we won't see them together again.

we could’ve at least got Edmund back, but he did have a massive Isaac-related hole to fix between the games trailers and release, so now we got this.

Auto runs sucks, they probably did it to get some of that android iphone money... It removed an entire element of jumps, going around obstacles differently and the ability to do proper boss combat... In SMB 1, you had to move up down back and forth to evade missiles and turrets... it was more challenging.. you could pick up some speed and reach unreachable platforms... Now its pretty much temple run for mrns..

the only thing that triggers me is that I requiere MORE difficult in bosses AND more bosses if there was a thing that loved the most in SMB was the bosses, and the fact that i can now punch them is precious, but i wish there was a lot more of them :c just my personal thought

This seems like the Zelda 2 of the franchise. Maybe we’ll get a return to form with Super Meatboy 3.
@Frilleon4 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Zelda 2 didn’t promise to be the same type of game and it was a masterpiece. It was one of the most influential games of the generation and its concepts live on in RPGs and action RPGs today. Super Meat Boy Forever is just an ok game. I put in over 100 hours of Super Meat Boy and this game just didn’t do it for me.

Hoo boy. I love me some Super Meat Boy and Binding of Isaac. In fact I love most of Edmunds stuff barring maybe his more experemental earlier stuff or the weird Dead Baby newgrounds stuff, heck I remember being really hyped seeing Super Meat Boy's trailer back for when it was shown off for Xbox 360. I have so many hours spent on both Meatboy and Isaac. So when I saw that Super Meat Boy Forever was going to be a randomly generated endless runner. I wasn't really optimistic since from what I saw, it didn't really look like Super Meat Boy, it looked like Cloudberry Kingdom with Meat Boy as the protagonist. Plus, (and this isn't to speak bad of Isaac- but,) Isaac has highlighted ALOT of faults of relying on a randomly generated world. A bad seed can make a playthrough utterly unbearable. The reason why some people enjoy Super Meat Boy is the same reason some people enjoy Kaizo Mario, I want to be the Guy and other ballbustingly hard Platformers. Because someone has made them and played through them, It becomes a mark of pride having learnt how to beat them yourself knowing you've done what the original creator has done, when it comes to randomly generated content. It will always feel a bit off, It just doesn't feel personal. This holds true for alot of Romhacks and user made levels, (the more better made ones) you can tell what sort of a creator is making the levels for you based on how they set up the levels. You saw this all the time in Meat Boy. I think I should play The End is Nigh. I remember looking at it and thinking "its a bit too like Meat Boy," but i'm craving some...

for someone who has not played super meat boy or heard of it is a great experience in the second game. I haven't played the beta version of super meat boy or super meat boy itself and I find the 2nd game a really fun and great experience more so than someone who has been around. (im not stating that nobody that has played the games have better enjoyment than people who have been around, but, in this video, I get the points, but its really not all that bad and the game doesn't have anything bad about it. Anyways, this comment is not a punch at the video or anyone, really cause you did say that the game isnt that bad, just wanted to put this here.

So that would be 240 "unique" levels which let's be honest probably aren't entirely different from eachother. Some segments will surely be reused. Now what about the original SMB? Every level in that game was handmade beginning to end. Guess how many levels it had? Over 300 and you didn't have to play NG+ 10 fucking times for that either.

The character roster screen is objectively the worst aspect of this game. Why are so many of the unlockable characters just copy pasted from the previous game its like they couldn't use any of the copyright characters from the previous game so they had to make original characters but were creatively bankrupt throughout the whole process Meatsona is literally the only new character I like in this sequel because he's both hilarious and broken at the same time.
