Definitely. In the comics of the past, he referred to all his victims as "zombies," implying that they were not truly human and thus permissible to kill. But like almost all serial killers, he could be very manipulative, so it was clear he was lying.

@@SeasideDetective2that’s the thing most of Batman’s villains flat out wouldn’t be deemed legally insane. Even if Victor thinks his victims as zombies it still wouldn’t be enough to be too mentally ill to stand trial, even if
@randallflagg37009 ай бұрын
@@JohnWilliams-wl9px - Indeed. Lots of people have mental health issues. That doesn't make them immune from prosecution.... in the US, a huge chunk of the prison & jail populations; in 2022, an estimated 44% of those in jail and 37% of those in prison in the US have a mental illness, going from psychotic disorder to depression, anxiety and addiction issues. Just being mentally ill doesn't protect you from prison, you have to prove that you didn't know what you were doing when you committed the crime, that you didn't know right from wrong at the time. And even then, it's not like lots of people believe, that "you just get a slap on the wrist and they let you go"... Being locked up in an asylum is arguably worse that being in prison. The upside is that you probably won't need to join a gang for you safety; the downside is that if you weren't crazy before, after a few years of force-feeding you neuroleptics and locking you in isolation "so you don't hurt yourself or others", you might just become nuts. And once you're in the system, good luck getting out; it's not like after a few years you can change you mind and ask to be moved to a regular prison, you're there for the long run...
@BigJonB369 ай бұрын
He's not insane in a way he'd be considered non-culpable for his crimes. Of all of Batman's rogues, only a couple (The Ventriloquist, Humpty Dumpty, maybe Maxi Zeus and King Tut) would actually clear that hurdle
@jayb89348 ай бұрын
Which is why the "legally insane" defense that is used to explain why they don't just execute the Joker or other Batman villains isn't actually realistic. They are psychotic in that they have no remorse or empathy for their victims, but they are aware that their actions are wrong. The Joker absolutely knows that he is causing pain and suffering, and takes delight in it. If I understand correctly, this proves that he can be held legally responsible for his actions.

I remember the fan discussions about _John Barsad_ possibly being Deadshot because of his outfit, which turned out to be false, but on the bright side Josh Stewart ended up playing Garth Ennis' Mennonite aka _John Pilgrim_ in *The Punisher* season 2 (he likes his Johns, eh?) Then of course, fans wondered if Mr Reese would turn out to be the Riddler in TDKRises... but he wasn't. Long story short, those 2 kinda made sense, but Tiny Lister as Killer Croc... why? The only real problem with Zsaz in that show is the fact they introduce his iconic tally marking gimmick during his first appearance but never actually do anything with it. We never see him build the marks up overtime or see a full body shot of him so we can see all the scars he has given himself. Like imagine having a mini arc throughout one of the seasons where we see him give himself the forehead tally’s over the course of a few episodes, that could have been cool
@randallflagg37009 ай бұрын
@@juiceekay7428 - Anthony Carrigan being cast as Rex Mason/Metamorpho for *Superman: Legacy* is already a big win for us *Gotham* fans! Between him and David Dastmalchian that's 2 of my favorite actors that this show gave a bit push to.
@randallflagg37009 ай бұрын
@@mrcritical6751 - Well they don't show the scars after that but they did do something with the concept in season 5. Remember when Poison Ivy manipulate Zsasz? When Gordon & Bullock later interrogates him he argues that that had he really killed all those people, his body would be covered in fresh new scars. Sadly we would have to wait the terrible show *Batwoman* (seasons 2&3 in 2021/2022) for a Mr Zsasz that we see give himself the forehead tally on screen. That show sucked, but the 2 episodes in which Victor appeared were pretty entertaining. Alex Morf, who also had a small role in *Gotham* season 5, does a great job emulating Carrigan's Zsasz. Like him (and Tim Booth & Chris Messina's version) he's an assassin for hire rather than a serial killer, and he uses all kinds of weapons instead of just relying on knives. And like the one from *Gotham* , Zsasz from *Batwoman* also has a sense of humor, which can be a bit jarring for comic book readers but hey, it's a pretty fun result so I'm not complaining.

My introduction to Zsasz was what was arguably his most famous comic book appearance: Batman Comics' "Red Slash," in 1993. At the time, I was shocked that such a violent and sadistic character would be included in a comic that children would read (although DC did show restraint in not showing Zsasz killing any women, which he threatened to do throughout the story). At the time I disdained him as one of Batman's "nouveau" villains: one who lacked a circus-like gimmick and leaned heavily into realism. All these years later, I've come to recognize that such villains have their place. But I still think there should be fewer serial killers in the Rogues Gallery. These men (and, in at least one case, a woman) are intelligent, certainly, but in an "animal" sort of way.

I dunno if the video game takes place after the movie or they are supposed to be the same story like so many other tie in video games for movies, lol. But otherwise it might as well had been an original character in the movie that could just have a visual nod to Zsasz without being him.

No Zsasz even in the comics does not fit the legal definition of Insanity, no Batman Villain does not even The Joker, the legal dentition required literally not understanding the consequences of your actions. To be fair, Victor Zsasz isn't that important in the comics either, I don't see the problem using him this way. To me the best uses minor villain in the trilogy's gotta be Maroni, as he basically acts as that universe's version of the Penguin
@Shift_Salt9 ай бұрын
It's a problem because it's a use in name only, whether a character is minor or not doesn't matter. Like imagine if Joker never became a "iconic" batman villain but still stuck around only for films to not really embody how he is as a character accurately. Hell, that already happens even. A lot of these takes on characters are not accurate or try to rework the characters to fit an idea for how the creatives want to do them not in a way that's mostly in line with how they're usually depicted. Characters shouldn't just be a face or name you slap onto anyone, if they're labeled as such they should be recognizable. But using Zsaz in this? It's not only not that recognizable it's entirely forgettable and throw away. Characters who actually have noteworthy qualities and a stronger presence than some random goons or crooks shouldn't be handled the same. Otherwise what's the point in even calling them anything besides "Criminal #42" or something, it just diminishes those characters further and makes people think "Oh okay they're just a whatever character without anything noteworthy about them."
