It honestly all just feels like tokenism. Pandering. I would love to read a good story about these topics, one where they come up organically and are integral to the plot. Sanderson's tokenism just feels like a corporation shoehorning these subjects in, as you said, to tick boxes.

Sanderson is definitely easy to read, in a literal sense. But reading what has essentially become the epic fantasy version of the MCU just becomes mind numbing. Diving into Malazan, Steven Erikson gets a bit more "flowery" with his prose but you trust him to bring everything together and he does. Joe Abercrombie feels very straightforward as well but god damn dude can write, especially characters. With Sanderson the "growth" or change were seeing is shower sex scenes, adolins spren calling him a slut and syl talking about her vagina.

I am just relieved to see what I have been witnessing since Oathbringer. I was labelled crazy, and a hater and just plain wrong for having all of these opinions years ago. Finally some vindication for readers seeing how sloppy Sanderson has become with his story telling over the last few years. His new editor has let him get away with his bloated prose for too long. A large part of what initially turned me off from the SLA anyway was the Marvelification of the series well before his writing tanked.

It's the Lucas effect. George Lucas was held back by a bunch of people while making the og trilogy. They kept his creativity in check and rescued the og movies from being as shit as the prequels. Once he started to work on the prequels, he had amazed such an status, that nobody could tell him no. This has kind of always been my problem with Sanderson even all the way back in Mistborn era 1 and I think it all comes back to his obsession with hard magic systems and strict rules. It makes all of his worlds and stories feel so arbitrary and constructed that it strains the suspension of disbelief. His books almost feel unintentionally meta-textual at times. Obviously every fictional world and story is arbitrary and constructed and in some way but other authors manage to hide the artificiality much better and their stories and worlds feel real and believable as a result. When you read something like LotR or ASoIaF it's like a window into a different world. The those places, people and events feel real. With Sanderson it's not so much looking through a window as much as looking at a corkboard. You see the individual pieces of a world and story and the strings connecting them but you're one layer removed, it's not the real thing and it never really becomes a cohesive whole.

When I was in high-school, I used to love books by Dean Koontz. Then once I figured out the formula, where each beat would hit, what and each character archetype was, with NO deviation, I stopped reading them. I think this is what is happening with Sanderson. I'm pretty sure I could write out a beat sheet and write my own Mistborn era.

At the end of the day. Sanderson threw away his audience that consisted of people that actually enjoy epic fantasy, and hes replaced them with mainstream Sanderson glazers. Its the same type of people that see a new Marvel movie and trip over themselves to slop it up. This book will age terribly and serves as the gravestone of Sanderson as a writer. He cares more about pandering to mainstream than to being an artisan of his craft, and that is unforgivable to me. This is all before even stepping into the topic of him betraying his faith, doubling back on his word, and enabling child abuse.

When he started using a lot of modern American terminology and verbiage in the early chapters, it really took me out of the experience. How were these things not caught by the beta readers? If they were caught, why didn’t Sanderson fix it? I’m still not all the way through part one, but so far it hasn’t been as bad as those early chapters. Also, on a purely lore related note, the characters using those are Yolish in origin, or heard it from Yolish people, which serves as an indicator of how Yolish society could be (closer to our own modern world, which is something that has been speculated for a while) I get finding it grating, but I think the criticism here is unfair overall.

I feel the writing has been downhill starting with Rhythm of War. And that goes for all of Sanderson's work, not just Stormlight. Not a steep decline, but a decline nonetheless. Yumi was good, Tress was decent, but I was a little shocked at just how little I cared about Sunlit Man, especially considering who the main character is. I chalked it up to Sanderson being better at longform writing. I'm over halfway through Wind and Truth, and I started looking online at reviews to see if I was being too critical or if this book was another step down. You hit the nail on the head with this book. I think the biggest issue is that everything feels foregone, predictable. Did I want to know exactly what happened with Honor's death? Sure, but it felt obvious from the early chapters that he was not quite as great as people made him out to be. Saw Shalan's big twist coming from a mile away, too. The sense of mystery and mind-blowing conclusions from the first three books and Mistborn is gone. It becomes a little more frustrating when, instead of building on new mysteries or giving satisfying answers, Brandon wants to talk about everyone's mental state in excruciating detail. Let's take Jasnah for example. She has basically done nothing since Oathbringer. It feels like Brandon doesn't know what to do with her. Yet we are being given all of her inner thoughts, strategies, and insecurities for pages and pages, all leading up to her having one strategic breakthrough that ultimately makes no difference for her side. lol Now, I'm up to a part where it looks like she'll have a confrontation with Odium, but is that really going to be a defining moment? Especially when her uncle is going to face him like a day later anyway? This is just one example of how the story is being bogged down by things we don't need to know. And the reason Renarin's romantic subplot feels forced is because he comes from an extremely strict culture where women have to wear a glove on their hand or it's as bad as being nude and each gender has extremely strict guidelines to follow or you're seen as a freak by the general public. Yet, everyone Renarin comes into contact with encourages him, pushes him toward it, and is happy for him. He faces zero pushback from a society that cares about whether women wear a freakin' glove. Where's Sadeas to be a jerk when you need him? lmao This, and the general real-world language that some characters use, are great at taking me out of the story. There was one point when Syl said, "That's kinda racist," and I think my eyes rolled into the back of my head. Brandon has said that he's just translating Roshar phrases into English, but coming from the closest thing to Robert Jordan, coming from the guy who made up a thousand swear-words and phrases for his worlds, I think that's BS. It's lazy writing but thankfully balanced out by much better writing for different characters. Maybe the second half of the book will be better, and it's not like it's bad or anything. It just hasn't felt as strong as previous Sanderson books.
@nikosbookreviews
@nikosbookreviews Ай бұрын
@@Cableguy15 Yeah RoW definitely started down the path of the writing changes, but they became so much more prevalent here. I also 100% agree that the "translating to English" thing is an excuse for lazy writing. It really is a huge thing that just takes me out of a story, especially when it's coming from the guy who has been known for creating immersive high fantasy worlds with their own religion, cultures, languages, etc.

I’m in your exact same boat. I haven’t finished it and I’m probably not even half way through, but I don’t remember his writing being this terrible. I genuinely enjoyed Sunlit man and every one liner it had, RoW was a dip in writing but never a disappointment, it still had plenty of amazing moments. This book is just marvel tier Reddit slop and it’s heartbreaking. As soon as Renarin mentioned his internal feelings for Rlain I knew that the book would be a massive disappointment. For many of the reasons you touched on. I really hate the whole woke vs anti-woke culture war crap going on but I do need to mention that Sanderson’s pandering is getting out of hand. If Alethkar has such a strict social order, the idea of an openly gay relationship is unheard of. Even from Oathbringer, realistically there would have been far more pushback against female Windrunners on a government level, not just the common soldiers complaining about it. He built up such a society with traditions so ingrained it would be abhorrent to break, but casually degrades them overtime with little pushback. If he wants to have the breaking of social norms in the story that’s fine, but it should be an actual struggle, not just a conversation and a “coming out” moment that’s begrudgingly accepted. It took decades of efforts in history for women to get the right to vote, and even longer for gay marriage, why is the social foundation of Alethkar, one built up over millennia, toppled like a house of cards?

I’m really glad I’m not the only one who’s been thinking this. The scene from finding Nemo when the Dad’s faces slowly degrade from excitement to confused disappointment is a good visual of how it feels to read this book. I’m not even halfway through and I’m not sure if I even want to finish it. After the first few chapters I thought I had just outgrown Sanderson. I’ve read a lot of other books since RoW including blood meridian and Thus Spoke Zarathustra, so I thought my tastes had just evolved to want a higher level of prose. Then I realized that Sunlit man isn’t that old, and it had barely any pitfalls present in WaT. Yumi and Tress had wonky dialogue, but they still had a decent hook, a sense of adventure, and a genuine feeling of satisfaction after finishing them. There is very little of that in WaT if any! What sucks for me is I was really hyped about Shinovar. It was the Japan but with white people of Roshar for me and I was excited to see how it functioned. It blows my mind how Sanderson was able to make both Shinovar and the backstory of my favorite character dull and boring! I am about half way through the book and I don't think it's forced but it is more direct. I think the real issue with the book is that 1200 pages is just too many pages for a narrative that canonically happens over just 10 days. There is more than enough room for the story Sanderson is telling with Renarin and Rlain in 1200 pages but it doesn't feel appropriate for 10 days of narrative time. Combine that with the fact that those are two characters that have orbited around the edges of the story and have never really been given the spotlight until now and you end up with a lot of screen time being dedicated to them which they both deserve but Wind and Truth was probably not the best time to do that given the narrative constraints on the story.

I enjoyed some of the plot resolutions in WaT but not the book overall. The writing was just so jarring. I understand that Sanderson has a fantasy world where the characters aren’t speaking English, and so the casual language he uses would be similarly casual to the Alethi, Azish etc. words the characters would use. But it’s just so unpleasant to read. It completely takes me out of the world he’s clearly put so much effort into making. I’ve read wheel of time, I’ve read mistborn, I’ve read way of kings. Sanderson can do better than this. I liked Kaladins conflict with Nale and some of the Szeth stuff. But his constant condescending “do you want to talk about it?” “I’m his therapist” crap was unbearable. I just wanted Nale to kill him.

Way of Kings and Words of Radiance are stellar. Oathbringer and Rhythm of War are flawed but full of great moments and ideas. This one... Yeah, I think others have nailed it when it comes to a severe drop in prose, particularly its marvelification. The writing has always been relatively simple, but this allowed scenes to speak for themselves and it never felt like a means for sacrificing the tone or style of epic fantasy. Now, characters sound like caricatures of themselves, like people who know they're in an action movie intended for a modern audience, making the writing seriously dip into YA if not outright fanfiction at times. Some moments just come off as juvenile in such an extreme way it totally breaks the tone that has been built up over the past four books.

So much introspection, overanalyzing/over explaining of feelings and thoughts, and way way way too heavy-handed when it comes to anything mental health related. I'll definitely continue reading Sanderson, but I don't think ever I'll do a reread again. I reread all of Stormlight before Wind and Truth, and by the end, his weaknesses as a writer were so apparent and exhausting. Also, your point about characters is spot on. Sanderson's characters now just feel like a checklist of personality traits, quirks, and mental health issues, rather than an actual living person.

I gave up on the Stormlight Archive when the characters/magic started to feel more like superheroes/superpowers rather than characters-in-a-fantasy-setting/a magic system they are using. I think writers need to get away from these thousand-plus-page tomes - I think it's very difficult to maintain the same spirit of what you started with, when you've got a story that never ends. You want to show magic, you want it to feel special, but when you've got 5k+ pages, you don't want to have to write the same details when characters are using magic, so you revert to shorthand: which amounts to characters flying anime-style all over the place. I've said this before, but there are so many classics of fantasy - the books that did it first - that were not thousands of pages long. Moorcock's Elric of Melnibone stories, Howard's Conan stories, among others - even Tolkien's LOTR was shorter than many first books in a modern series. They are far too long/bloated, and I just don't have the energy to slog through these doorstoppers anymore unless I'm REALLY into it. I also think, despite what Sanderson says, that he is 100% pushing a quota. He thinks it's the right thing to do, and that's fine, but really this is just the icing on the cake for me. Maybe he knows who his audience is, idk - or maybe he doesn't. But a writer should always, always write with a specific audience in mind. To go against that is not only risky, it's just not that smart.

I agree with your criticism. I've just finished Wind and Truth and am left with an odd mix of satisfaction and disappointment. The lessons seems to be that everybody is just a person, including our heroes and our villains and the author Brandon Sanderson himself. Understanding the villains as just people takes away from their scary villain character and it does feel that some characters who were built up to be scary villains fell short in this book. And there was a character who could have been a great villain reveal but it turns out I was wrong about that. We've had 4 years of theory crafting which has been fun but I've noticed that the longer the break time went on the crazier and more elaborate the theories got. I might have enjoyed the book more if I had gone in straight from RoW. Oh well, I still enjoyed the ride and it is unfair to have too high expectations of the author / any one book. Too high expectations ruin your experience. Also I need to say something about it: There are a couple of scenes that trigger me because they feel like they are not necessary for the plot but only there to appeal to the Woke Zeitgeist. I love the intricate world building and the story overall but did you really need a transgender soldier? Did you really need a conversation about how it feels to be neither male nor female? There is a gay love story and I didn't mind it too much because it takes its time to explore it without being too in your face. But the other stuff was just not meaningful in any way to the story.

The answer couldn’t possibly be that, Brandon is tired of answering questions about the lack of representation in Stormlight? You may not like using the word Woke. It almost feels like Stormlight was bought by Disney, and they have got to work destroying it like they did the McU and Star Wars. Just for the record I liked most of book 5. Wind and Truth is one of the worst books by a successful author that I have ever read. I like most of his work but it seems to be going down hill since book 4. Boo hoo, lets gaze at our shoes and feel sort for ourselves. That's one of the big problems. Page after page of pseudo psychology. It's utterly boring. Just beat you over the head with this junk over and over. I'm not religious, I'm an atheist. In fantasy, it can be fun. Here, well honestly, who cares. Adds zero to the story. The whole book should have been 1/5 it's length as it all filler. I thought it was perhaps me, maybe I'm not enjoying reading right now. So, I grabbed something else and nope, definitely not me, enjoying reading just like normal. It's the book, Wind and Truth is just boring. You get a lot of info about characters and the world but really, it doesn't help the plot move along. It's set over 9 days, where's the pace? If you're going to save the world, you're not going to do it with a bit of self reflection or therapy. Just terrible really. Agree. Tell it. He used to be more subtle, less preachy. Now he has entire chapters which are just dialogue to show his political viewpoints. His agenda is prevalent in Wind and Truth. No longer is he open ended. This book had little plot, lots of meaningless meandering and side characters, and a ridiculously overpowered enemy. His cosmere connections are killing the coherence of individual books. His lack of a developmental editor with the balls to say no really shows. Wind and Truth could have been 600 pages. Tight narrative moving the plot for Dalinar/Navani, Kaladin/Szeth, Shallan. Rlain/Renarin could have been an interlude. Sigzil is a minor character and should have been cut. Instead we get 1000 pages of flashback and dialogue standing around, and only a few hundred pages with anything happening. Further, it seems ridiculous to have basically god, demigods, 80% of the worlds nations, and the immortal indigenous against like less than a stadium full of Alethis and Azish who are out of gas. And we have to make sure we over explain in 5th grade prose every thought and action. I almost wish everyone just died, Moash took the Dawnshards and shards of Adonalsium and wins. As a postscript: go read chapter 114, Jasnah debate with Taravangian. Then go read a few chapters of Malazan. Notice the difference.

Wait why is Kal becoming the support-role a bad thing? Any mortal need rest after what Kaladin had gone through. I'm happy reading this book knowing all Kaladin does is learn to make soup and play flute. The lad needs rest. The fighting-hard part is taken over by the other guys (Adolin finally get to taste what it feels as a lowly soldier in war) And it's not like he didn't fight at all. Saying shit isn’t the issue, Syl explaining in detail how she made a Chull head in place of her genitals, joke or not, is vulger, stupid, and exists only for shock value. Also the cosmere has featured extremely creative cursing relevant to each world that works perfectly. Why erase that in favor of real world hazbin hotel style writing? Vulgarity is acceptable when used in moderation, not when Jasnah essentially says “donkey Bollocks” 3 times in a row because she’s angry. That’s millennial level garbage that you’d find in a Netflix original. All it does is remove any impact the words had as if a middle schooler wrote them.

Great point about the overall focus of the books shifting towards character introspection and self-discovery journeys. I disagree about the representation aspects feeling inorganic to the story, but unfortunately there with you on the other points. There’s just way too much clunky introspection and too many 21st century modernisms with the word choices for me to easily stay immersed like I had been in the previous books. And the humor is hitting less often for me too which isn’t great (or just seeming more forced). Considering how much I still enjoyed the Cosmere secret projects and the Lost Metal I’m hopeful it’s not an issue that’s going to extend too far into his other books.

I agree with most of what you're saying. I managed to get through about 30% of the book before I decided to DNF it and only read the rest of Kaladin's chapters because at that point I just wanted to know how his (and Syl's) arc ended and didn't give a shit about anything else anymore. I'm still kind of in disbelief that half a year of looking forward to the release of this book lead up to this: massive disappointment. Every character has become a shell of their former self, the book reads as fanfiction at times due to the modern/YA language use, and the attempts at humor are just so painfully cringy. Don't get me wrong, The Way of Kings will always hold a special place in my heart and I still respect Sandersson for having created this captivating world and intriguing story, but I'm so glad I only started reading Stormlight Archive in February so I didn't waste years of my life being invested in this series. I read Way of Kings and jumped off once I saw he was going to start releasing novellas in between books and tying things into the broader cosmere too much. Out of curiosity when each book is released I check out the reddit and try to keep up with the main events. This has become absolutely impossible. People are basically speaking a different language. All the terminology is just exhausting. Sanderson may have simple language in his books but they are the opposite of newcomer friendly. People just getting into fantasy will be turned away by the bloated complexity of it all. He's a fantasy author for fantasy fans. You can speculate about how every tiny bit of his worldbuilding relates to each other in new and interesting ways. But if you don't keep up with all of it, then it's just impenetrable. I need to make notes, charts and do do homework to read his books. They are no longer for me, and unfortunately, many other fantasy authors have taken Sanderson's success as a licence to also write their own books this way. I read less and less fantasy every year.

Great perspectives! This has been the most conflicting book I’ve read in a while. Not sure if I’m reading a story or a spur of the moment idea that an author wrote in a napkin and decided to publish it without any formal editing process. The language and prose is a major step down from TWOK, which was a superior book in terms of presenting ideas with a clear yet sophisticated use of the language. The prose in WaT is suffused with modern vernacular, which strangely affects the story’s quality. Rather than enjoying the story by completely immersing in it, I find myself constantly asking why good prose decided to go goodbye.

Increasing use of "COSMERE" references in books that require knowledge of other books unrelated to the stormlight archives. Before, it used to be little easter eggs that were rewarding to find as a Sanderson fan, but now its very in your face and just.. too much. 2. Prose has never been a strong point for Sanderson, but the extensive use of modernisms in wind and truth is crazy to me, like adolin saying troubleshoot?? and other examples that I can't exactly remember because I cringed inside and tried to skim past as fast as possible. 3. I just dislike sanderson's comedy. It's like everyone in the Cosmere has the same definition of "comedy" and its just stuff that Wit would say, but said by other characters. I think Stormlight has always been more about the characters than the worldbuilding, it’s literally filled with flashbacks that aim to provide context for our characters while also advancing their journeys simultaneously. I agree that it’s less subtle now, but I’m around 40% into WaT and I’m not seeing any big difference so far. The prose is worse, it seems even more accessible than before which is probably too accessible, but I think that’s fine, Sanderson’s always aimed at making it easy for anyone to understand. The words like “Therapy” and other words from real life are fine for me, I just imagine it has an in-world translation, or even a string of words to explain, but because the story is being read to Earthlings, we see the word as we know it. The LGBT thing is (so far in the story) a complete non-issue for me. There’s 2 minor characters that are flirting, in a series with 100s of named characters. It’s barely mentioned and pretty subtle so far, I don’t even think about it. The humor is not interesting to me, but it’s never been the reason why I love Sanderson’s works. All in all, you give fair criticisms but I think they kind of melt away when you stray away from the assumption that Sanderson is supposed to be the greatest writer of our time. He has weaknesses like any other writer, and his strengths are still impressive. I guess the early stormlight books introduced his formula to a lot of people, and it gets less impressive the more we have of it, I just try to appreciate it in spite of this, and there’s still twists and turns that I find still enjoy. There’s some stuff I didn’t necessarily liked (Kaladin’s 4th ideal felt obvious and I just knew what would happen) but like I read 30 cosmere books and I’m bound to be able to understand the direction some plot lines are going towards, otherwise I’m just an idiot. I’m also someone who does not read a lot or fast, I’m fine with the book taking me 3 months to finish, which makes me the ideal target for Sanderson. I want accessible writing, I like information to be repeated as I likely read only one chapter per day, and I’m invested in the characters’ journeys. Maybe someone like you, who reads a lot, started to get bored with this, and that’s fine, but I think it comes more from you than from him. It’s like me with music that I used to love 5 years ago that’s become less interesting as I listened to more records. Did the music change or did I? Not to say Stormlight’s writing didn’t change, but perhaps your preferences also did.

I think the length and not pulling back for quality over quantity was a major issue with this book. Many parts were dragged out and tons of characters. I read all of Wind and Truth and I don't regret it, but I think you're right about the turn into mass appeal. Could be partly becaue he's getting bored with it or doesn't know what else he could do with it, but its so popular he has to keep up the project. The prose and writing has never been amazing. Although, its not often a book with really solid prose and writing becomes incredibly popular. The accessibility is more important. I had to push through the writing style pet peeves I had to get into these books, but I think it was worth it for an interesting fantasy world. I'm glad to have finished Wind and Truth to know what happened to the characters I like and see some plotlines tie up.

Yeah Sanderson has always been very clear that accessibility is very important to him and that his prose is intentionally accessible, but I just felt this was a huge step down even from the not great prose to begin with. It definitely has seemed to have the desired effect of appealing to the masses, but it's just become way less appealing to me. I will absolutely admit that a lot of my favorites are less popular because of being less accessible, so totally get that!

This was a pretty fair review. My take: 1. The plot stagnated badly 2. The ending undermined the entire story 3. Entire story arcs were unimportant. The first two days were interesting from a plot perspective. Decisions were made and the story progressed. The middle chapters did nothing to further the story. Szeth battled more honor bearers. Dalinar saw more visions. Adolin and sigzil were slowly ground down in battles of attrition. It was all rote and predictable. Most of the chapters were exposition on the cosmere and roshar. The ending was terrible. Gav as champion was not set up well and the entire contest of champions was pointless in the end. Radiants were built up the entire series and are now useless. Kaladin undermined every part if his journey and defaulted to, his baseline of "I will save everyone". Worst off, Dalinar's choice just seemed arbitrary and Sanderson had to tell the readers why he made it and what the consequences were. There was no reason for Mraize or Iyatil to get so much attention. Have shallan defeat them in her raid. The end. Mishram and Sja Anat were unimportant. Thaylen City only served to neuter Jasnah. The underlying singer-human dynamic thay asked the question about whether Mishram can have peace between humans and singers got a ton of words, especially renarin-Rlain, but I think you can take the entire arc out without changing anything. The sigzil arc was very intriguing, but every gain he made was subverted after the drive-by cameo by Moash.

I haven’t read this one yet. And haven’t read any of the secret project books either. Not sure if I will. His non-Cosmere books have always rubbed me the wrong way, and struck me as being a bit lazy. Then I started to see the same sort of thing creep into the second era of Mistborn, which I abandoned after the second book. Rhythm of War was a pretty large step down from Oathbringer, which was already slipping a little from the first too books. Sanderson is in the enviable position of being able to do anything he likes with his writing. It’s disappointing to me that what he likes is to become a factory, churning out superhero books that masquerade as high fantasy (but superhero books have always been his niche). On the other hand, for his fans I suppose that’s better than what George Martin has decided to do (or not to do) with his freedom.

I finished it a couple of days ago and I agree with almost all of your points. Plus the ending was probably the weakest among all of cosmere books, especially for a book with a 10 years break before the sequel. Compared to this the other recent cosmere books by BS were a lot more enjoyable with very good endings.

Yeah I've heard that from some others as well, and with it starting so poorly and having a weaker end....just didn't seem worth it

100% agree with everything in this video, wind and truth was such a terrible book in my eyes, filled with the authors mental vomit. and thats not to mention how terrible the plot is.
