I really hope this video blows up enough to get TsuPro's, Mill Creek's, or Starlight Runner's attention. I have hope they will listen given that recent years have proven they are willing to communicate and listen to the community in a way most entertainment brands don't. Thank you for covering this

I'm surprised to hear they're this bad, considering that the other Mill Creek Ultra series releases I've seen have had quality subtitles. Mill Creek's Ultraseven BDs, in particular, were a massive improvement over the mistimed mess Shout made of their earlier DVD release.

I've watched like half of the mill creek releases and almost every season has had subtitle issues but gridman was the only one that kept me from finishing the season.

At least where Ultraman is concerned The Ultraman is the only modern official release to get butchered subtitles but one borderline unwatchable release is still one too many especially considering the Ultra series is the gold standard for western Tokusatsu releases atm

The Ultraman: The Adventure Begins that's coming out next year on Blu-Ray isn't a rerelease, it's the first time it's ever gotten a western release in the modern age. Considering there also doing Blazar (and hopefully Z, Trigger and Decker) idk if Mill Creek would have the time to redo The Ultraman, 80 and Gridman as well.

I was wondering why The Ultraman had really bad subtitles compared to literally every other Ultraman thing put out by Mill Creek (as I've been collecting as much of it as I can) and while the show itself is quite good the poor translation and formatting of the subs creates a massive barrier to enjoying it. Makes sense now that I know the subs are from a different platform but I do hope in the future we get releases that are at least more consistent.

That's not really a solution given that those uploads of Showa era Ultraman on KZbin are region locked in the U.S. forcing us to use the subs Shout Factory and Mill Creek have released. It also doesn't absolve the problem that Tsuburaya and Mill Creek sold a version of Jonias with very subpar subs leading us to ask them to give us a release with proper subs

If they did that they would still be using the same subtitles. Did you even watch the video? A poor translation is a poor translation. This unique chapter in the franchise’s history deserves far more love and than what it got.

The Ultraman was part of a big wave of tokusatsu That was part of a nostalgia boom (This anime, the original live action particularly the entry Ultraseven or Kamen Rider), or part of that Toei Marvel deal (basically Spider-Man, Battle Fever J well their batch of Super Sentai) third called the third toku boom. Gundam was initially a flop, the vinyl sale records interested in Teenagers and of course the model kids eventually led to the franchise Getting a second wind. Bandai under their Popy label did make toys for the Jonias anime And the live action follow-up Ultraman 80. As for GSD (as much as I hate the CE) I don't see it as retaliation as much as a bad business decision on the part of the JNN/TBS corporate office part as they wanted to capitalize on the anniversary of MSG, They didn't have the Saturday time slot open by the way there is a lot of factors on why Nexus had failed but Gundam seed destiny is one of the contributing factors so it gets most of the blame. In other words, no this was not retaliation from Sunrise there's a good amount of people, there are a lot of people who are fans of that franchise over there, But however just plain incompetence from Network corporate.

I was afraid that the subtitles completely changed the dialogue, like replacing "American football" with "rugby", or inserting political statements. Compared to a lot of modern anime subtitles, this doesn't seem so bad.

There's a bit where the characters say "dry ice" literally in English but the subs say "frozen gas". The subs also say stuff like "Jesus christ!" sometimes when the characters express surprise or whatever about something and I'm like 99% sure that's not what they're actually saying. The translation has to have been deliberately altered because I don't see a way you could get anything like what I mentioned without changing it.
