The Problem with Timeless Fashion

"Timeless Fashion" seems to always be perceived as something to strive for, while constantly following trends is becoming increasingly criticized. Timeless fashion is described with words like, "elegant," "sophisticated," and "classy." While trendy pieces have been referred to as "basic," "mainstream," and "void of taste." In this video, I play devil's advocate and explore some of the flaws in "Timeless Fashion" and prop up trendiness with some hidden benefits of an ever-changing style.

In pursuit of timelessness, I find that people still end up looking "outdated" and it robs them of their own self-expression. I agree that people should be more open to dressing for the present self instead of dressing in hindsight. I also think it's sort of a way to "stay young." You can't say you've aged if you've looked the exact same for years.

I think most people don’t understand how to mix the two. My “timeless” pieces make up the bulk of my closet and I mix these pieces with things that are trending or from other “aesthetics” (I loathe that word lol).

I think everything you mentioned are all great points, but to add on to the jeans thing, jeans even predate the 1920s! they were invented nearly fifty years prior in the 1870s, but were really only worn by working class people in the American West--even in the 20s jeans were still primarily for working men. So when they became a trend in the 50s and 60s due to movies like Rebel Without A Cause, it was already a "timeless" working class staple for decades. Just goes to show how even "timeless" pieces had to be a trend to someone at some point or another!!

Nothing was invented by Chanel, another designer a few years back put a little black dress into high fashion. Also it’s pretty much always been fashionable, even if it was inappropriate for an entire outfit

Wow this was really a refreshing take! I never thought about it that way but it’s so true. I wonder if we will get anymore “timeless” pieces with future trends, it’s hard to see it happening because everything is so fast/evolving. Really liked this video :D

As someone that casually likes fashion history, i really agree with you. Fashion reflecting what's going on at the time in the world is part of the appeal to me, and I think even "timeless" fashion can't avoid that.
