Had a “pre” private lesson before I start puppy class with a young kid, 19, at a training facility here in Salt Lake, Kash, at B-Hyve, and let me tell you, you might think you know what you’re doing, but..when you see how a pro (no matter how young) handle your puppy and things go like your pup is suddenly a high test race car running the track, you realize that you as the owner have a lot, a LOT to learn and practice. Thanks Kash..you really opened my eyes! KZbin is great, a fantastic resource, but, you have to get some (great) hands on training!

@pittymama4500

I have one that is hyperactive even in his sleep! Literally! His dreaming is wild unlike the other dogs. Not just flinching and twitching feet. He is everywhere. But there is no turning him off. He was obviously a hard pup when he was small so I held onto him after his littermates were all gone to train before finding a home. At 6wks when families first started coming around to choose the puppy they would get at 8-10wks when they were ready, we noticed Bear showed no fear toward strangers but saw the threat and let them know they were on his terf and did not back down even to assertive confident men! He still doesn't like strangers and only trusts you if you have been around since he was young. He doesn't give warnings other than a low grumble and the he will launch himself at their face! No bark, no show. We manage him very effectively and therefore he has never been able to bite anyone but not because he didn't want to. We have chosen to just respect that he doesn't really care about people outside of us and we don't make him meet people. It soon became obvious that no normal owner would be capable of handling this dog. So he is 3 and is here for all his days. He has learned to be calm when we are relaxing but if I'm not making sure his exercise needs are met then that wouldn't happen. When outside, he is stimulated. We don't walk him much because it's too much for HIM! He learned leash manners but the whining that results in holding himself back is super loud. I take him to dog parks after hours so he can experience the smells and get some good space to run and play. He never enjoyed meeting other dogs unlike his brother who is a social butterfly whom we also kept on purpose from that breeding. He can fly over any barrier so you have to have eyes on him at all times with remote in hand to prevent him from fleeing as soon as his ears perk! It's so insane. I consider myself well educated in the training and behavior world and he is tough for me and I feel unprepared still yet. I'm a trainer that could use a more experienced trainer! I own his mother and because she is my head female she helps me to keep him in check. If she knows I missed something she will take it up on herself to put him down. It's not a one person gig keeping up with Bear Bear. But with me, that boy is the most sensitive dog ever! I call him Casanova because he's ever so gentle with me and all in my face if I even act like something is wrong. Even my husband has to watch his energy toward me if upset cause my boy isn't playing. I try not to encourage it but finding a balance of allowing who he is to be his job in being my protector has proven to be a lacking area exposed for me. He has good obedience and we've done some mild bite work only as an activity for us to do to add to wearing his energy down to a manageable level. I never will feel like we are done working towards balance but at the same Time I know how much progress we have made and I have no doubt he would had been put down if I had chosen to find him a family.

The difference is this you can break a dogs spirit and crush their drive or you can build trust- teach them and the owners how to learn - and then add positive corrections that mean something, and don’t break the dog down.

My dog is a ~2 yo rescue --- and goes to the barn every day with horses and other dogs. Need an e-collar --- but dedicated to doing that right -- your cell phone metaphor is brilliant! Anyway, bought your book and we are on our way.

This was interesting and yes you train how you train and stand by your principals and what has value for you. People are a rule to themselves and you don't have to explain yourself to them because they will never change. Social media dog trainers are creating so many issues and they are getting so popular and misslead people, like I have seen but I have learn and become wise form all these conflicting and unprofessional show men who have created issues for dog owners. Shocking really.

Hi Larry! You are a great trainer and do not need to explain or defend yourself to Jeff Gelman fans. Jeff Gelman is so cruel and abusive, he belongs in prison.

Forgive me for being ignorant; what exactly does Jeff do that is so wrong? I don't disagree with the bonker towel training if that's what you're referring to. Thanks if you answer. 😊
@suefleming1023
@suefleming1023 2 жыл бұрын
@@solomonstello Through my own ignorance, I attended one of his seminars. I saw him in person and actually watched him "train dogs" for 2 days. Jeff uses an ecollar on high levels in the most cruel way. He was unable to train a single dog to do anything. Most dogs were screaming in pain and quivering on the floor, too scared to move when he was done "training" them. For instance, someone brought a little black pitbull, hoping Jeff could train him to enter a crate on command. Jeff Gelman's answer to everything is "dial up". The poor dog didn't understand the ecollar, didn't understand the command, he was terrified and Jeff just kept on dialing up. Jeff Gelman has no idea how to train a dog. He seems to just shock them into fear and submission. That's not dog training. He is very unprofessional and spent much of the two days speaking poorly of his step daughter, and making sexually based jokes toward a girl and her Wheaten Terrier. I felt very sorry for the girl being sexually harassed in front of the crowd. I felt very sorry for the dogs. I have trained dogs for many decades and I personally believe in reward based training. I DO know that pure positive training can NOT stop bad behavior. For instance, you cannot use treats to stop a dog that kills cats. Punishment is the only way to stop unwanted behavior. However, I saw Jeff Gelman use way too much severe punishment on dogs that did not deserve severe punishment. Dogs can be trained with rewards, and dogs can be trained with punishment. Watch a dog when he is confused and doesn't understand what you want him to do, the dogs trained with punishment will freeze, afraid to make a mistake. The dogs trained with rewards, will try several different things, trying to get it right, they enjoy working with you. The way Gelman uses severe punishment, right from the start will ruin a dog forever. The little black pit bull will now have a negative association with a crate. Probably forever. Jeff Gelman did that. I want to say...I have never owned or handled the type of mean, nasty dogs that Gelman claims to cure. There were no dogs of that type at the seminar I attended. Maybe he is good at working with those types of dogs. I don't know. But from what I saw, I doubt it. Gary Wilkes is the trainer that "invented" the "bonker". Jeff Gelman likes the bonker.

@@suefleming1023 Well dang, I had just typed a long response thanking you for sharing your experience and asking some questions, but I accidentally closed the tab...sigh. I've heard a lot of polarising views about Jeff Gellman and this is the first comment I've seen by someone who has watched him in person, so I'm very curious. What was he working on with those dogs at the seminar? They were really "screaming in pain and quivering on the floor, too scared to move"? That seems so sickening I wondered whether you were exaggerating...

I am for whatever method works as long as it doesn't harm the dog either physically or psychologically. I made a lot of mistakes when I started training and it resulted in some unhappy walks. Now I use a lot of positive training, and have a shock collar on for emergencies, such as my dog taking off after a deer or chasing a rabbit onto a busy highway.

As soon as you said the customer wanted someone not just in Nashville, but in their neighborhood, I KNEW where you were going with the ‘non-committed owner’ title. Myself, I live in Japan and I have seriously considered talking to you about training my dog. It’s just likely that the expenses would be out of my reach and it may be logistically unreasonable. But if I am wrong, and you think maybe we should talk, my 5 m.o. Golden is interested.

This causes a conflict in me. I can’t give up on the idea of at least contacting you. But my wife? PPP…Pretty Purely Positive and I don’t think she will change. My Golden will mouth me IF I let him. But he doesn’t nip me or my clothes. Or at least doesn’t get away with it. And my wife thinks I’m a monster for clapping and giving a harsh vocalization. So perhaps regardless what I do I’m always going to have a struggle.

I wish all people were like you because I literally will do ANYTHING needed of me too I am that committed to my dogs but I haven't found and can't wait to find someone with the skill level that could even be near me to even care about how committed I am to help me! If all trainers cared about that we would have way more dogs that were well-behaved in society because the non-committed owners are going to let training Fall by the waist side anyway, so train the people that are going to keep it up first! I want my dogs to be the best version that they are possibly capable of being and I want them to reach the things that they're unable to dream about! I'm far from wealthy and all I have is my will to be the best trainer in the future and the best handler right now that I'm capable of being. My kids are grown and I've got nothing but time and dogs!

I adopted my now 3 year old Aussie mix in April last year. She was very fear aggressive. She barked at everything, including the owls. She was super aggressive against bikers. She fought with my old dog twice (my old dog passed away in November last year). She was never potty trained, so she peed and pooed in my house (even on my carpets) many times. She refused to potty and kept smelling around outside of the house. She was even aggressive against me a couple of times, like when I tried to take back her toy bone, ... It was a very very extremely hard and stressful time. BUT she has improved a lot over the past year. I taught her some basic commands. I play with her outside right next to the highway almost everyday. She is now a little less aggressive when she sees strangers walking near my property. At least I can control her. She is not afraid of the highway traffic and does not bark at the highway traffic (except very occasionally). The last time she peed on my carpet was like two months ago (she would pee all a sudden when I pet her in the past, but not any more). She still barks at the door like crazy. But she is not and will never be aggressive against me any more. All bad dogs will improve over time. The process is painful. I don't think she will be as good as my old dog. But it is ok. Cause I think I have achieved something and I did not abandon her and she knows it.

I’m SO DISAPPOINTED!!! I live in Florida & had no idea you were here! I’ve only been a sub for about 9 mo but obviously I’m not in the loop! How do I find out about your seminars? I was so fortunate (& desperate) to find a trainer that recommended your book & after meeting my sweet pup & I, said she would not waste my time & take my$ unless I was willing to learn how to use a e-collar (sound familiar?). I am a disabled vet & never have extra $ but after wasting $ on 3 previous trainers that were strictly positive training only (which works on lots of dogs but not mine!) I took out a loan & have not regretted it! Although my pup (SDIT) is doing fantastic now (has passed her AKC CGC reg & urban), I know that OUR training is never done & one of your seminars would be so beneficial! So I’m saving my pennies & hopefully will see you in the future (if I can find out when & where!). Thx so much for what you do… GOD bless u & your family- stay safe! ❤️🐾

I am desperate, I just lost my dog to a FedEx truck. I need to learn how to train my dog so I won't lose another dog because he starts a dangerous behavior such as chasing large trucks. I had put a tie down in the yard to stop the behavior. This is not correcting the behavior. I am willing to do whatever it takes to learn to teach my dog that I don't even have yet because I am to afraid to get another dog. I failed my last dog, he was great and loved training, he was 5 when he started chasing trucks and within 3 weeks he had gotten killed and I had to watch as my best friend was killed because I failed him. I sent you an email but I will call and keep trying. I realize your busy but I have a lifetime of time to fit into your schedule.

Im so sorry to hear this Mystic. Take it easy on yourself and learn from your mistakes, like we all do. You are doing the right thing. Research Larry and others and dont put your dog in a position to fail until you do it intentionally for teaching once the dog truly knows the rules. Failure creates growth. As soon as a problem arises, nip it in the bud fairly and firmly....dogs dont need freedom, people and dog friends....they need us!! Give the dog the outlets it needs to thrive and have fun. Things will arise and you as the captain of the team teach the dog what is acceptable and what is not....every time, fairly!! Hang in there and get you another dog!!! God bless!!

I know this is a year after this video. It's unreal how few good trainers there really are, at least anywhere near me. The one facility I looked at, would not allow me to watch them with other dogs before I committed to dropping off mine. Red flag. I'm in Ky and I just need a trainer that I know won't be positive only or fry my dog into the next life. Balanced, prong, ecollar, slip lead, treats. Any idea how hard it is to find a trainer like that, that can be trusted around here?? Almost impossible. I've been leaning on KZbin to teach me to teach my dog. Robert Cabral, Joel Beckman, Tom Davis and you are at the top of my list. Thank you for helping me to train my dog. I have a 100lb GSD by the way. 😎 Ps...I take notes when I watch everyone, so I AM committed. I have teenagers involved in sports, and other things so I just don't have the time and most importantly the money to drive to far, so I do what I can with KZbin.
