For eminem i feel like he wasn't really accepted by the existing community but was able to get widespread success commercially due to the fact that he was more marketable to white people who is the vast majority of the US. The thing is with Eminem though is that he is actually talented which lead to the existing community start to slowly accept him over time. It is hard for white rappers especially in the early 2000s to get credit for how good they are from the existing hiphop community but was a lot easier to get credit from casually listeners and is why em has always done really well commercially
@nox2sweet Жыл бұрын
No disrespect, but I don't think I agree with the not accepted by the hip hop community as Em earned his stripes and respect in battle rap and had the backing of Dr. Dre early in his career, which could only come from people respecting him. @Thomas Buchovecky I disagree. Connecting with an audience requires a lot of nuance. Additionally, a huge part of being good is in the lyrics. That’s the difference between a one hit wonder and rapper that makes it big time. Now just because white rappers and black rappers might have different messages or experiences does not mean that the their is a problem with white rappers. The video tries to make the case that white rappers do not represent the culture that was established through rap, as if that is all there is to rap. However, that is simply not true. Rap is about cadence, rhythms, and sharing experiences through lyrical twist and turns. Meaning rap is about connecting a beat to some lyrics and telling a story and sharing lyrics. It’s about expressing oneself for varying reasons or crying out for a group of people. Now all of this is not exclusive to black rappers. The video specifically cites Eminem as being a problem white rapper but according to your position do you still think that’s true? Do you think that Eminem lacks depth and nuance?

Eminem put a lot of work and time and positioned himself in ways throughout the years to achieve the success he gets now. I understand why children don't get that, because y'all weren't alive, but that it absolutely not the historical context. Eminem has also inspired an entire generation of rappers, other artists and many, many people from all walks of life across the entire planet. It goes deeper than just "he's white." Most of the world isn't White. P.S. DOOM also really only exploded in the underground after Em's prime.

@@simonbright2975 No one is saying Eminem is only popular due to him being white, but him being white is a huge and undeniable factor in his colossal commercial success, it gave him access to an entire untapped demographic that would otherwise not listen to hip hop music, especially during the early 2000s due to gangsta rap being the dominant form in the mainstream, I agree that artists like DOOM or Freddie Gibbs aren't the best pick to compare since their works were never radio friendly to begin with, but even if we look at artists like Kanye or Kendrick, both people who made some of the best records in mainstream hip hop, we can still see them overshadowed by Eminem's extremely average later works in the 2010s, hell Macklemore won the grammy over those two, if that isn't indicative of white privilege I don't know what is. It's not so much about Eminem himself, it's more about the audience that listens to him and why they do so, I guarantee you a majority of people who listen to Eminem are completely ignorant about the history of hip hop or the classics of the genre, Eminem is all but musically a pop artist, he is treated like one by the mainstream, and even he admits so in his own words, the quote is right there in the video.

They won't accept that those people exist. And if they do, and they accept that they do have an inherent advantage on startup, some still won't handle it well. The reason Em is still respected is because he acknowledged it but didn't feed it. unlike Tom McDonald and all the other shitheads who DO feed into it today. It's about the art, and the sooner someone stays true to that as a white guy, the sooner people will be cool with them. Otherwise they only get white fans who are too afraid to listen to people like Vince Staples or some of the older shit because It makes them uncomfortable based on their skin.

The big seperation in rap is not black vs white, it's genuine vs wack. There's a lot of wack black rappers out there too, and to me they're no better than frat boy rappers. If you're spoiled and narcissistic, have no soul or connection, then it just isn't worth listening to. These horrible frat boy rappers you mentioned, they're not horrible because they're white. They're horrible because they're spoiled little brats. Doesn't matter if it's Mike Stud or Rick Ross, it's still wack and makes you feel you lost brain cells. Yet no-one would make big points about narcissistic black rappers being black, the way you made a big point of these frat rappers being white. You would never have the guts to make a video like that. So, it doesn't seem genuine if you don't have the balls to do criticism honestly. Trying to be woke just for the sake of it, is something you do because you want people to think something about you. Not because you want to be genuine or express something that is real. The points about privilege though, is spot on. You could have made this video more about that, there's more to be said here. It really does suck that weather you're black or white, you will most likely come across some form of race-based struggle based on the color of your skin. If you're black, you won't grow as quickly in your prime as a white rapper, but if you're white, it's harder to get an initial takeoff due to people generally looking down on unpopular white rappers. The Hip-hop scene would be so much better without a racial devide imo.

Eminem's popularity isn't just because hes white(yes it played a part in his success after his acceptance in rap), but he stayed true to hip hop and has respect by every top rapper. The problem with eminem has nothing to do with with with how he treats hip hop as a white person. He is at the same time the most overhated and overated rapper by hip hop fans because he has a couple of corny lines, and some bad songs but at the same time he is still technically good at rapping and can make lyrical songs. Eminem doesn't really do the lyrical miracle thing(that was just a free style) but he is made fun of for "yelling into the microphone" and he is an old head. The dislike of eminem comes from the fact that people dont like his newer music specifically.
@SongSteel4 жыл бұрын
I'd say partially it is due to him being white, but as you said, it is also because he is a **good rapper overall**. There's no way a rapper is going to be successful just because he is white. He has (at least in his prime) good flow, good bars, deep topics, and a new and interesting take on hip hop. And the OG's respected him for that. Every single respected MC respects Eminem, since he revolutionized the rap game.

Look at it now , so my skin color is the source of my benefit now? Means It was an obstacle to get past when he was trying to get discovered but became a reason for large main stream success once he hit radio. Idc what any ones skin color is or what you think mine is if you gonna respond . If I don’t look like you I don’t know your life if you don’t look like me you don’t know my shit either

@@jaykluesy bro Eminem had in a predominantly black genre of music. People of color have to overcome everything in a predominantly Western white world..... I'm sure he struggled and grind to make it where. I struggle and grind to get half as far as my white counterparts. Just to meet the basic needs of my living

Imo he should just shut up and listen to the music. Listen to what’s good and not what isn’t. You don’t need to ‘scope out’ anything. He’s talking about posers like it’s this rap specific issue and doesn’t also plague literally every other genre just as much

I think your being unfair to Eminem. Saying he isn’t himself and has no respect in the hip hop community is crazy when he still pulls good features on his albums.
@DragonsYuh3 жыл бұрын
Just because he pulls good features doesn't mean anything. Eminem is and probably will be for a while the best selling hip hop artist for a while. Getting an Eminem feature is just a smart business decision.

Awesome video. Honestly an awesome viewpoint of the subject, that while it's easy to notice the artistry of any race or genre its difficult to appreciate or notice the privilege of those groups as well. I will say a big part of this is also what people call mainstream or not. I think many of the names you mentioned enjoyed the current mainstream sound of their time and therefore played into it, meanwhile rappers like eminem make their sales off of the nostalgia points gained by "Em's classic sound". All of it just kinda culminates into people who rap for the fame and not for the game. All in all, great message, and yes, I think the rap scene is and will continue to level out especially after the 2016-19 era of rap. Influential rappers that brought rap to the mainstay genre it is today, rapping off the shoulders of giants from the 90's and 2000's. As a final note I'd like to throw one more rapper in the mix. Mike Shinoda of both Linkin Park and Fort Minor isn't readily considered a rapper, and considering the eventual genre position of Linkin Park, it makes sense, but I felt he really brought an artistry to rap and lyricsm, and grinded as much as any other to prove his place, and eventually found a sound that brought rap to an even further and wider audience without disrespecting the artistry of others. JayZ, who ended up doing the Encore remix of Numb with the group, has commented on Mike and his work before, commending it. And while a little corny to some, Mike's group Fort Minor made Remember The Name and other songs and albums that brought up many underground rappers but still became quite popular by way of just being good songs. Just a notable mention.
