As soon as I saw the crack in the epoxy, I was reminded of the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery known as Kintsugi - using a special lacquer that's been dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum to glue the pieces back together. And I think this idea perfectly fits your idea of rebranding epoxy tables as a form of rescuing the wood or reusing it, because the purpose behind Kintsugi isn't to fix a teapot or a bowl, but to take something that was an every day object and give it new life as a piece of art that's unique because of its flaws.

At 26:40 whilst you're curing the UV coat, the epoxy fluoresces a bright blue at the edges of the wood. Wonder if you could recreate that effect in normal light and make a "atoll table" where the dark epoxy transitions to a bright blue at the edge of the wood. Would be awesome, but probably very VERY difficult.
@Steamrick
@Steamrick 5 ай бұрын
I think the only way to do that is to make multiple extremely thin layers and let them cure long enough to apply the next one - and then you have to start progressively mixing in black epoxy so that it's a gradual darkening rather than immediate. The amount of effort would be immense - though possibly less so than the jeans table was.

I didn’t even notice that at first but that is definitely a cool effect. Maybe it’s possible to brush on a thin layer of blue and then pour in the black? Once you sand it smooth, you would see the thin blue outline. Depending on how “wet” the epoxy is, it may blend slightly into the black or it may just look like a border. Would be cool to experiment with though. 👍

As you stated at the end of this video Rescue... 🙃I have just been introduced to your channel earlier today... as a an artist who also trained as a cabinetmaker. I appreciate all the effort you went into resurrecting that amazingly beautiful piece of timber. 20 years ago I found myself in a timber merchants with all these fabulously striking unique pieces of all different kinds of timber. I ended up bringing a 18 inch x 13 inch x 3 inch deep piece back on the plane with me... It is some sort of burl.. its been so long since then, I don't remember what it is exactly. it has like your piece, beautiful medullary rays. My initial idea was to use a book-leaf design as part of a table top inlay. I took it to a timber specialist back where I live as there is many small areas that need to be filled... Over the years I look at it longingly, where little bits fall out when I pick it up. It seems sacrilegious, not to utilise its beauty in all its glory. I was put off by what the timber guy said at that time. And now, having watched many artists do amazing things with epoxy resin and timber an with all of the potentially inherent problems that can happen. I realise I don't have the skills needed to pull off reshaping it into something beautiful, especially given its actual size. Watching your video has inspired me to do or at least, get something done with it.

Rescue: A beautiful job, Cam -- and Scott! -- I love how you show all of the flaws in the materials and processes, and then show how you recovered from those flaws to yield a breathtaking piece of furniture art. Well done gents!

Honestly I have got to say that the way you two create and edit these video's is actually pretty impressing. The way you tell a story during the video is quite creative, include lots of thought's and not only conclusion and bring in lot's of mistakes and fixes for those ideas. I pretty much never comment on any video unless I deem necessary, but seriously you got some serious talent and I was hooked on this video due to a great story, not because I was that interested in this exact project, but I kept on watching without knowing why sooo, This is me giving you guys some good vibes and keep creating these very entertaining video's 💪

Re Scotts car burning: I also had this happen many years ago. I was driving my car and flames started shooting out from under the dash. I ran to the nearest house to call fire dept. By the time they got there it was nothing but a burned out frame. It was speculated that while the car had sat in a wooded area for a couple of months not being driven, squirrels or mice may have nested under the hood. Great video! Very informative and enjoyable to watch! Beautiful table! 👍✌️

I really appreciate your sense of humor. Too many people would pull the punches to seem likable. You just told everyone to cram their stupid big clock down their throats. I'm going to go remove ours from the wall now in shame, thanks for the life advice.

People are insane if they get upset about legitimate sponsor's and suggestions from such a talented woodworker. You wouldn't take any sponsorships you don't believe in, and I'll take all the product suggestions I can from you. Please continue suggesting things that you believe in!

Rescue: Scott thank you for all the discussion in the process. Years ago a comment in a magazine (maybe Fine Woodworking) said that in addition to all the How-To articles they ought to have a How-To-Fix the mistakes. Your open admission to the issues we all run into and the approach to fixing them is inspiring and very informative.

Rescue. That was an amazing “recovery” of the table. I agree that it is some of the prettiest wood that you have used for a build and am so pleased you were able to “recover” the table. I am constantly impressed with your abilities and builds. Thanks for keeping the interest in your builds and videos.

Hello Cam, Greetings from India. I love all your videos and truly enjoy the process you narrate. Most importantly I love how you share the tips, tricks, and knowledge you have gained through several years of your experience. I learn a lot from you about critical thinking and how to bounce back from negative situations (about issues or disasters while working on projects) and turn them into a flawless masterpiece. I would love to have one of the projects in my house in case if there are any giveaways. I am not into woodworking but would like to start as a hobby and turn it into a profession. Its always a pleasure to watch and god bless you and your family.

Cam enjoyed the video(s) immensely. Love your ability to jump in and try new things. Also liked the metal table legs/stands you used in several previous builds. Inspired me to try make a contemporary metal tube stand with 3” rounded steel tube and a 54”x168”x3” white concrete table top to put on it. (I know it’s not wood but my wife wanted a concrete top). I couldn’t find anyone to make the top due to its size so I made it myself. Turned out good for my first time. Definitely some lessons learned along the way but a great experience overall, similar to the many experimental table tops you tried that turned out beautiful. Thanks again for the inspiration. PS your latest video of the “rescue” of the round table turned out great. Keep up the great work and look forward to your next project.

I really like this channel and I like how honest you are. You seem to take everything in stride and you seem pretty fearless to me, I am somehow in my 60's now and have begun to learn some woodworking and when I need a boost of courage I just come here and get some! I will never be a maker in your class but I will understand what it takes to be. Thank you, Cam!

RESCUE.... Although it's not "repossessed", "repo table" would be a cool name. Also a name that wouldn't technically depreciate with the name itself. Just an idea, but I love the videos. I usually keep them on whilst working from home, so thank you for helping me get through hours of online work!! Much love and keep up the beautiful craftsmanship!

I've been binge watching your videos. They are just great. A starter company I worked for purchased a $50,000 conference table. At the time I was like that is just insane. Watching your videos has enlightened me to understand why pieces can cost so much. I love seeing the giveaways and donating money. I also love watching the process, the mistakes, the end result. The amount of hate folks spew from their putrid fingers in the comments, your comebacks are just great! I find it hilarious 😂 😃 😄 Keep up the great work! 👍

We love Scott. I think adding the video guy is fine but not necessary. He’s so much more than a video guy. Also, my grandmother had a huge clock coffee table where the table top was a giant working clock (batteries and motor were on the underside) and it had a piece of glass overtop to protect the clock but make it visible. Hers was a wood frame wrapped with leather upholstery but it would look AMAZING as just wood, especially if you made the clock wood as well.

Rescue. My sister, my fiance, and I are moving into a new home next month and I just can't help thinking how much I would love to buy this but I just can't with everything else in my life right now. But I have to say that I have been watching so many of your videos in the last 12 hours and I am very thoroughly enjoying your channel. I cannot wait until I'm at a point where I can start taking this passion of mine seriously and begin my own wood working. Your work is inspiring and this table is absolutely gorgeous. Also I think Scott has absolutely earned his place as Scott. He is an incredible addition to your channel. Amazing work to you specifically and sorry about your car. I hope that gets sorted for you. One last time, this is an absolute work of art. Please never stop sharing your talent with the world.

I love that you revived this table!! How does that sound? I am actually glad because it was a beautiful piece of wood and the simple clean stand(not simple to make) looks amazing with it. I also don’t think anyone would have a problem figuring out who Scott is in a conversation. Maybe even do a quick shot of him when you talk about him. That will help people familiarize with him and put a face, which is easier, than just a name!!!keep up the great work and videos guys. Always impressed!!!
